ASHRAE is always looking for new and better ways tospread the importance of being a member especially if youwork in the HVAC & R industry. For those of you readingthis article, I do not need to tell you why it is important (andnecessary) for you to be members of ASHRAE.
But you can help us recruit new members and spread theword of ASHRAE!
Since our member-get-a-member was such a success at ourNovember meeting, the Board of Governors has decided tomake it a standing membership drive program. In otherwords, any member bringing a non-member to a regularmonthly meeting OR tour and this non-member joinsASHRAE Society and the SD Chapter at the meeting, he orshe and you will have the meal on us…FREE. It’s our way ofsaying thank you for helping the San Diego Chapter grow.
In order to get your free meal(s), come find me, Eric Glatzl –Membership Chair, at the sign in desk (I’ll be “damn glad tomeet you”) and I’ll take care of you!
Remember, in order to get your free meal(s), you must signup for ASHRAE and give me your check at the meeting. Thecheck shall be made out to “ASHRAE” and shall be in theamount of $215.00. Filling out the application and sending inyour check at a later date will not get you a free meal I’mafraid.
Please note, no cash or credit cards will be accepted whennew members sign up. Checks only.
To help you recruit new members, below is a short list of whyit is awesome being a member of ASHRAE:
1. Discount on ASHRAE products (books, standards, conferences, etc.)

George (Gene) Maxwell Reid, Jr. (10/06/50 – 11/17/11)
Born George Maxwell Reid, Jr. in Omaha, Nebraska on October 6, 1950, Gene spent his early lifein Nebraska and Wyoming. After his parents’ divorce in the early 1960’s, he and his youngersister lived with their mother in Alexandria, Virginia, and spent summers in Omaha with theirfather, stepmother and half-brothers.
Gene excelled in sports at Groveton High School in Virginia where he was a track star and captainof his wrestling and football teams. He received a full athletic scholarship to Hofstra University inNew York where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering.
Upon graduating from Hofstra, Gene accepted a sales engineering position with Trane specializingin heat transfer theory, systems design and technical sales. He moved to San Diego in 1973where he worked in the local Trane office and called on mechanical contractors and engineers.Gene had a very successful career with Trane resulting in being named to the Trane Top Ten Clubhonoring his professional management, leadership and cooperative support of industry colleagues. He held the position of Sales Manager for several years and in 1992 was promoted to Trane WestRegion National Accounts Manager. Gene also worked several years for Brian Cox Mechanical inbusiness development and was employed by Claris Energy Group, Inc. at the time of his passing.Gene’s love affair with jazz was central to his life. Over the years he attended many jazz concertson Catalina Island. Several weeks ago he was attending a jazz festival on the island when heseverely injured his foot which required him being flown to the Los Angeles area for additionalmedical attention. Gene had been doing well in his recovery from various foot surgeries over thepast 6 weeks or so. While the exact cause of death is still being determined, it is believed that hemay have experienced blot clots in the recovery process that could have resulted in a pulmonaryembolism.
Gene is survived by his father, stepmother, sister, two half-brothers, former wife, his son (age 10)and his daughter (age 13).

CTTC Update (Continued from page 1)
From our previous CTTC meeting, Jerry presented briefly the discussion about setting-up an industry forum/paneldiscussion regarding the current state of design-build deliverables in our market, and how oppressive it is for teams tocompete for such projects. Jerry noted that members of Syska who attended the recent DBIA national conferencereported that the DBIA is equally concerned with this issue and has now decided to make it one of their key actionitems going forward.
Jerry challenged the CTTC with the idea of hosting our own, independent (of national CTTC), 3-hour technicalsessions. For each we can garner 300 PAOE points (up to a maximum of 600). This is an important issue and Jerrywould like to see it happen. The action item going forward was to begin to develop ideas of appropriate technicalsessions, who the speakers/presenters might be, etc. This type of session would be above and beyond our regularmonthly meetings. It’s possible there might even be a nominal charge to attend (between $100-$200 per attendee). However, the subject matter must be relevant and intriguing.
We discussed the need to lock-in on a DL (Distinguished Lecturer) before the end of the month (November) as there afew assignments remaining. After that, if any are left, they become first-come/first-serve opportunities. Rebeccaintends to lock-up Mr. Kishor Khankari (from Syska) for our April 2012 monthly meeting. He is a specialist and PhD inCFD modeling. We had further discussion about the balance of speakers/presentations scheduled for all future meetings (2011-2012year). Rebecca has everything but the June meeting locked-up. She fill find that one and present it at our next CTTCmeeting.
Jerry stated that of the 35 students he is teaching at SDSU, 34 submitted applications (and checks) to becomeASHRAE student members. Unfortunately, all applications (and checks) were returned to ASHRAE on 10/03/11, onlyto be apparently lost. Jerry actually contacted ASHRAE early this morning asking why the student membershipapplications (submitted 2 months ago) had not yet been processed, only to be told neither the books (on consignment)or the applications had ever been received. Jerry then produced and submitted the FedEx tracking paperwork, signedby an ASHRAE representative. Fortunately, ASHRAE found the books and the checks misplaced in their warehouse(today). They are processing the student membership applications today.
We discussed the status of finding a person to serve as the sub-committee Refrigerant chair. The two (2) candidatesthat had been previously identified are not able to commit to the level members of the CTTC would like, therefore, thesearch continues. Allen and Jerry are going to put their heads together and pursue this further.
We also discussed whether we could sponsor (as ASHRAE) Jerry’s students in attending our ASHRAE Christmasparty. Jerry wanted candidates to spend only $15-$20 per person. The party committee decided that if studentswanted to attend, the cost would simply have to be $95 per person, since this is a fund-raising effort and we wouldlose ground in our pursuit of ASHRAE Research Promotion dollars. So both Allen and Jerry stepped-up and offered tosponsor 2-students each, depending on how many (from Jerry’s class) actually indicate a desire to attend. Jerry willverify the head-count tonight at class.
We also discussed (again) sending ASHRAE student members to the 2012 ASHRAE Winter Conference in Chicago,in January 2012. We have no candidates who have indicated any interest at this time. Students from Jerry’s HVACclass are simply either graduating in December and moving on, or if not, they will be engaged in classes in the springsemester that precludes them being gone for 3-4 days.
We had further discussion about maximizing PAOE points and some of the things we need to do/record to make thishappen. Many ideas... Now it’s just a matter of implementation.
Heather pointed-out the upcoming ASHRAE/USGBC conference coming to San Diego in March 2012. This close tohome, everyone should find a way to attend.
Meeting adjourned promptly at 1:00 PM.
There will be no CTTC meeting in December 2011. The next CTTC meeting will be in January, date to-be-determined,in light of the pending attendance at the ASHRAE Winter meeting in Chicago (Jerry will be attending). To all CTTCmembers, look for an announcement of a meeting date sometime in December 2011.
Thank you.
