Brevard is coming off a record-setting game in Buena Vista, Va., as the Tornados defeated Southern Virginia, 69-7. Brevard gained 519 yards on the ground on the ground and nine touchdowns against the Knights, led by a pair of freshmen in Kelvin Jeter and Thadus Benton III. Jeter, the SAC’s leading rusher, gained 177 yards on 14 carries, while Benton set a BC record with four rushing touchdowns, five in the game overall on his way to 142 rushing yards on his way to garnering SAC Offensive Player of the Week honors.

Carson-Newman comes into the game with a 2-2 record, having dropped games against Winona State and UNC Pembroke, while defeating Bentley and Concordia-Selma. Last week, the Eagles fell to UNC Pembroke, turning the ball over four times and were shut out until the final minutes of the fourth quarter in a 30-7 loss in their first road trip on the season.

This will be the fourth meeting between the two teams, with Carson-Newman holding the 3-0 edge over the Tornados all-time. Last season, the Eagles returned four BC fumbles for touchdowns for a 77-7 victory over the Tornados at Burke-Tarr Stadium.

Entering conference play, the Tornados possess the NCAA Division II’s top-rated rushing attack, averaging 357.8 yards per game, gaining 1,431 yards on the season on 241 carries. Brevard averages 5.9 yards per rush and is led on the season by Jeter, as the freshman leads the SAC in rushing per game with 125.0 yards, averaging 10.9 yards per carry on the season and four touchdowns. Benton and senior fullback Neville Bryce have teamed up for another 527 yards on the ground and six touchdowns, while senior quarterback Michael Crumbaker has picked up five scores on the ground on the season.

Head Coach Paul Hamilton is in his fourth year at the helm of the Tornados, bringing with him 28 years of coaching experience at both the Division I and Division II levels, with eleven of those years as head coach.

Brevard rode victories in their first five games last season, finishing 7-4, while recording wins against SAC opponents Lenoir-Rhyne, Tusculum and Catawba. The team completed one of the greatest turnarounds in the nation, recognized as the 11th best turnaround by Somis Sports in Division II in 2009.

The Tornados made the full transition into the SAC in the 2008 season, finishing with a 1-9 record, which did not reflect the heart and determination the team showed as they made strides to competing in one of the toughest conferences in all Division II.

In his first year at Brevard, Coach Hamilton made huge strides in constructing the Brevard College Football program from the ground up. In only their second year of existence, the Tornados finished 2-9 on the year, playing a full South Atlantic Conference slate along the way. The Tornados improved on a regular basis throughout the season, as BC scored in every contest, a

huge upgrade from the 2006 season in which the Tornados were shut out four times.

Coach Hamilton’s squad, which only had a month of preparation under the head coach prior to the start of the season, scored wins over both Chowan University and LaGrange College both of which were home contests. In 2007, the Tornados improved in every statistical category as they competed as provisional members of both the NCAA Division II level and of the very strong South Atlantic Conference which had four different teams ranked throughout the season.

Hamilton began his collegiate football coaching career at the Citadel in 1981 where he coached the receivers. He then moved on to East Tennessee State University where he coached the receivers in 1983 before coaching the quarterbacks in 1984-1985 and 1986-1987. Hamilton coached the quarterbacks and served as the offensive coordinator at Wofford College in 1988-1989. Coach Hamilton served his first coaching stint with the U.S. Air Force Academy from 1990-1996. During his last three seasons, he called the offensive plays for the Falcons in addition to serving as the quarterbacks coach. Air Force competed in four bowl games during Hamilton’s time there and ranked second nationally in rushing and in the top-25 total offense four times. While at Air Force, Hamilton coached quarterback Beau Morgan, who finished in the top-10 in the Heisman Trophy voting and was named a third-team Associated Press All-American in 1996. Under Hamilton’s guidance, Morgan became the first player in NCAA history to rush and pass for over 1,000 yards in a season two times. He also broke the NCAA single season rushing record for a quarterback, along with being only the second player in NCAA history to run and pass for 3,000 yards in a career.

Hamilton’s first break as a head coach came at East Tennessee State, where he coached from 1997-2003 and where he amassed a record of 38-41.

During his first season at ETSU, Hamilton’s team led the Southern Conference in total offense, total defense and boasted the league’s Male Athlete of the Year, Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year. The team’s 7-4 record in 1997 tied as the second highest win total ever by a Buccaneer squad and gave Hamilton the best record ever by a first-year head coach at ETSU. The Buccaneers set three single-season team records in 1997, including the marks for points per game and total offense per game. ETSU was ranked in the top-25 throughout much of the season, as two of Hamilton’s players were named first-team All-Americans by the Associated Press and the Sports Network.

Hamilton then moved on to be the head coach at Elon in 2004 and 2005. In his first season as head coach he guided the Phoenix to two Southern Conference victories, a first in the school’s young history as a conference member. He posted a 6-16 record at Elon over the two year span where he coached seven All-Southern Conference players, five Southern Conference Athletes of the Month, two Academic All-Conference players and one Academic All-American.

In 2006, Hamilton returned to the Air Force Academy to coach the fullbacks for his former college coach, Fisher DeBerry.

Hamilton graduated in 1981 from Appalachian State University where he lettered for three years as quarterback under DeBerry and was a team captain as a junior. Hamilton earned his master’s degree in secondary education from The Citadel in 1986.

Hamilton and his wife, Jane, a native of Spruce Pine, NC, have three children – a son, Kye and two daughters, Jenna and Alanna.

what’s new For bC in 2010? Brevard College has moved their games to Asheville HS Memorial Stadium. The stadium has been voted the most beautiful high school stadium in North Carolina on several occasions. It originally contained a Bermuda grass playing field surrounded by a rubberized track, the first such track in the area and recently resurfaced. Due to the stadium’s size, for many events such as soccer, field hockey, and J.V. sports, o nly the visitor’s side is open to the public. The stadium recently received a new lighting system designed for television broadcast, and is fully wired with video and audio for event broadcasts with several camera positions, including o n the sideline and o n a platform in the endzone.

Turnovers and Tackles for lossesBrevard has recorded sacks in 15 of their last 17 games, behind the coaching of defensive coordinator Scott Brumett, while they have recorded interceptions in 10 of their last 15 games. With returners Salonik Amos and Michael Gist, the Tornados look to continue this string of defensive success and help continue the winning tradition being built by the BC Coaching staff.

winning in the saCOne year after recording their best finish in conference play, including their first road and home victories against Lenoir-Rhyne, Tusculum and Catawba, the Tornados continue to realize that winning in the South Atlantic Conference is a key to football success, as last year’s SAC Champion Carson-Newman went all the way to the NCAA Division II Semifinals. This season, with their schedule set for three home conference games and four on the road, Brevard will look to overcome being picked eighth in the SAC Coaches Preseason poll and continue their improvements which led to the program being recognized as the 11th-best turnaround in DII football last season.

Breaking 100When the Tornados broke the 100 yard rushing mark last season as a team, Brevard went 5-3, winning their first five games of the season and setting a new BC rushing record with 412 yards picked up on the ground against Southern Virginia last season in the Tornados 42-7 victory. This season, 100 yards rushing is still the mark as Brevard is 3-1 when they achieve the century mark on the ground, and Brevard has had two individuals reach the 100 yard mark in a multiple games this season.

records in sight...Prince Simunyu is the Tornados leading returning tackler this season and is also the reigning SAC leader in tackles for loss with 14.5. Playing outside linebacker for Coach Brumett’s attacking 3-4 defense, Prince will have plenty of opportunities to again terrorize the opposition behind the offensive line on his way to breaking the All-Time BC tackles for loss, needing only five more tackles behind the line of scrimmage to break Stanley Jones’ record of 23.5. Meanwhile, Chase Henry became the Tornados all-time leading scorer in the modern era of the BC football program when he converted his second extra point attempt against Edward Waters, breaking the mark set by John Taylor in 2008.

nCaa rankings/offenseThe Toranados come into Saturday’s game leading the NCAA Division II in averaging 357.75 rushing yards per game on the ground after three games. The Tornados are ranked 148th overall in passing offense, 19th overall in total offense and 10th overall in scoring offense.

Individually, Kelvin Jeter is 13th overall in the NCAA rankings with 125.0 yards per game on the ground, while Thadus Benton is 72nd overall with 72.75 yards per game. while Michael Crumbaker and Benton are both tied for 64th overall with 7.50 points scored per game.

NCAA Rankings/DefenseDefensively, Brevard ranks 26th overall in rushing defense, allowing 92.0 yards per game and is 34th overall in passing defense at 164.25 yars per contest. In total defense, the Tornados are 13th overall with 256.25 yards per game, while sitting 50th overall in scoring defense, allowing 20.75 points per game. Brevard is also tied for 101st overall in turnover margin at -0.75.

NCAA Rankings/Special TeamsIn Special Teams play, Brevard leads NCAA DII in net punting, averaging 44.08 yards per punt attempt. The Tornados are 113th in punt returns, averaging 5.63 yards per return and 71st overall in kickoff returns overall, averaging 20.27 yards per return.

Dakota Arrowood is tied for 66th overall in punt return yards, averaging 7.33 per game, while Justin Fleming is among the leaders in kickoff returns, tied for 99th with 21.67 yards per return, while Jeter is tied for 25th in all-purpose yards with 153.0.

Page 20: Asheville, N.C. - bctornados.athleticsite.netbctornados.athleticsite.net/Football/2010/Carson-NewmanGN.pdf · N.C. Brevard is coming off a record-setting game in Buena Vista,

In 1933 the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church authorized the merger of Weaver and Rutherford Colleges onto the grounds of the Brevard Institute in Brevard, NC. On September 17, 1934, Brevard College opened its doors to 385 students. Both Weaver College, whose athletic teams were known as the Golden Tornadoes, and Rutherford, whose teams were called the Ramblers, had strong football traditions. When the two colleges merged, the athletic teams were known as the Brevard College Tornadoes (now Tornados).

Less than two weeks after the opening of Brevard College, the “Tornadoes” squared off against the Western Carolina Teacher’s College (WCTC) junior varsity team on the new college field (located where the college’s administration building now stands). Walter Clayton caught a seven-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Woody Griffin for the first touchdown in Brevard College history. Clayton rushed for 165 yards and scored four touchdowns on the day as Brevard totaled 470 yards in total offense en route to a 62-0 victory. Joining Walter Clayton in the inaugural BC starting lineup were his two brothers Harry and Edward, who both scored touchdowns as the offensive line opened gaping holes on the left side of the WCTC defense.

The October 4, 1934 issue of the Transylvania Times offers the following description of the game:

“Harry was always ahead of the ball carrier, taking out his men, not his man, and on almost every play he took care of two defensive players. On at least one play Harry blocked three men out of the zone of play. Right along with Harry was the entire right side of the line, beginning with big John Pickelsimer, starting center; Neal, guard; Kilpatrick, tackle; and Gaston, end.”

The Tornadoes finished their inaugural football season with a 5-2-2 record, with wins over Wingate, Boiling Springs (now Gardner-Webb), Smokemount CCC, Presbyterian and Lees-McRae. A 0-0 tie with Mars Hill in their final game of the season enabled BC to be named Co-Champions of the ten-team North Carolina Junior College Conference. Bud Gaston, Walter Clayton and Leroy Lail were named to the all-state junior college football team by the Charlotte Observer.

The following year, the team had its best record of 8-1-1 which included wins over teams such as Wingate and Lees McRae. Unfortunately, a loss to Mars Hill in the last game of the season cost them the conference title. Brevard College continued competing in the North Carolina Junior College Conference finishing second in 1939 and in 1948. The post-war years saw a period of growth in college attendance and athletics participation. Several members of the conference became four-year institutions, while most of the remaining jucos dropped their football programs in light of increasing transportation costs. 1950 is the last recorded year of the Brevard College Tornadoes competing in intercollegiate football.

In 2006, the Brevard College Tornados Football team was reborn, taking the field for the first time on August 26, 2006 against the University of Virginia-Wise. Shortly after, the Tornados won their first game back on the field against Chowan University in a 10-5 game.

Coach Paul Hamilton joined the BC Football staff in Fall of 2008 and led the Tornados through their first season as full members of both the NCAA Division II and the South Atlantic Conference and in 2010, the BC program completed one of the greatest turnarounds in the nation, recognized as the 11th best turnaround by Somis Sports in Division II in 2009.

Brevard, N.C. - The Tornados overcame turnovers in their first two possessions, before rallying behind seniors Michael Crumbaker and Derek Church on their way to 39-13 halftime lead, defeating the visiting Edward Waters College Tigers in Brevard’s 2010 home opener at Asheville High School, 53-27.

The Tornados won the opening coin toss and elected to receive, but after a three-yard loss by Jeter, Brevard took to the air, where Crumbaker’s first pass of the season was tipped and picked off by Balfour, giving the visitors their first possession of the game. The Tornados defense held the Tigers to a three-and-out on defense and Jerry Martin’s punt landed inside the Tornados 10-yard line, where it was fumbled by Jeter and the Tigers pounced, with Balfour landing on the ball in the end zone to put Edward Waters up early, 7-0.

The ensuing kickoff was a short one collected by Church at the Brevard 29, and the senior fullback rumbled his way up field, shedding several tacklers before finally being brought down on the Edward Waters 35 yard-line. Four straight runs by the Tornados, including an 18-yard scamper down the left sideline by Jeter led to Crumbaker’s first touchdown of the game, a five-yard quarterback keeper as Brevard evened the score with 10:44 to play in the first quarter.

A second three-and-out by the Brevard starting defense led to great field position for the BC offense as the Tornados were awarded the ball on the EWC 35-yard line following a personal foul after Martin’s punt. The Tornados again capitalized, striking quickly as Church found a hole in the defense and carried the ball all the way into the end zone for a 32-yard score, putting Brevard up by seven.

Edward Waters put together their first drive of the game in their next possession, marching down the field in 10 plays, covering 56 yards capped off by Turman’s one-yard sneak to bring the score back within one, but a failed two-point conversion kept the Tornados ahead with 3:12 left in the quarter, 14-13.

Brevard’s next drive also found pay-dirt as the Tornados took their drive down the field, pounding away at the defense with 10 straight running plays before capitalizing on Bryce’s three-yard plunge, but Henry’s extra-point attempt was pushed wide, keeping the score at 20-13.

Turman took to the air in the next Tigers’ possession, marching Edward Waters down the field to the Brevard 18-yard line with a series of swing passes and drop-offs to his tailback as the Tigers converted two third-downs, however a miscommunication between Turman and his tailback led to a fumble which was recovered by Curcio at the Brevard 27 to end the drive.

On this next possession, the Tornados overcame a long gain negated by a holding penalty as Jeter took the ball and went 63 yards down the right sideline for the first touchdown of his collegiate career and put the Tornados up 26-13 with 7:05 remaining in the opening half.

Brevard would score twice more in the first half as Church again found the end zone with a six-yard carry and Crumbaker and Watts connected with a three-yard fade in the right corner of the end zone as the teams went into the locker room with the score 39-13 in favor of Brevard.

In the second half, Crumbaker led the Tornados on a 10-play drive in their opening possession, before scoring on a one-yard keeper to put the score at 46-13, but Edward Waters responded in the first play their next possession as Turman found Bellamy on a crossing pattern and the senior broke several tackles on his way to a 64-yard score to put the score at 46-19.

Xavier Johnson found the end zone for the final Tornados score with 5:01 left in the third quarter, rushing for three yards off the left tackle and Nabors carried the ball in from 10 yards out for the final score of the game for the Tigers as Brevard opened the 2010 season with a 53-27 victory.

Gardner-Webb Game Stats/Story

The Tornados won the opening coin toss and chose to receive. On the first play of the game from scrimmage, Crumbaker run up the middle, but the ball was forced out Nelson Rushing and scooped up by Jordan Woods on the Brevard 28-yard line, changing possession to Gardner-Webb.

The Runnin’ Bulldogs capitalized as Little carried the ball three times with the last being a nine-yard carry into the end zone, putting the hosts up 7-0 with 13:55 to play in the first quarter.

The Tornados put together a drive on their second offensive possession, starting with a 20-yard kickoff return by Justin Fleming to the BC 37-yard line. Fleming added a 14-yard carry on the 10-play drive and Jeter and Crumbaker combined for 35 yards on the ground as Brevard moved the ball down to the GWU 9-yard line. A pass in the left flat to Xavier Johnson picked up seven giving the Tornados fourth and goal, but the GWU defense dropped Crumbaker behind the line on the next play, ending the Tornados drive.

On the change of possession, following a first down to the GWU 24-yard line, Juanne Blount broke through the right side of the BC defense, moving 58 yards down to the BC 18 before Prince Simunyu and C.J. Wilson chased him down. Three plays later, GWU moved into the end zone as Rock scored on a quarterback keeper and following the extra point by Ryan Gates, the Runnin Bulldogs went up 14-0 with 6:09 left in the first quarter.

The remainder of the first half was a battle of field position between punters Eric Watts and Graham Purvis. BC had one final drive in the second quarter, moving the ball to the GWU 29-yard line, but the Tornados’ drive stalled as Crumbaker was intercepted by Jeffrey Williams.

After each sides swapped possession in the second half, the Runnin’ Bulldogs took to the ground as Blount carried the ball eight times on the 11-play drive, moving GWU down to the BC seven-yard line before the Rock connected with Patmon in the back of the left end zone on a fade, putting the score at 21-0 in favor of the home team with 7:15 left to play in the third quarter.

After a Brevard punt, Gardner-Webb moved the ball out to midfield before Browning was stripped of the ball, with Christian Lumbu falling on top to give the Tornados great field position. A GWU personal foul two plays later moved the ball to the GWU 30-yard line, where the Tornados went to work, pounding the ball behind Benton, Crumbaker and Jeter before Crumbaker took the snap and found a gap in the line, rushing into the end zone from three yards out to put BC on the board. Chase Henry’s extra point made the score 21-7 with 12:57 left in the game.

A personal foul and a defensive pass interference led to Gardner-Webb’s touchdown in the next possession as Blount carried it in from two yards out to put the score at 28-7 with 9:45 left on the clock.

The Tornados took a long drive on their next possession, moving the ball 68 yards on 12 plays, consuming 7:03 before Crumbaker again found pay dirt, this time squeezing through the right side of the line for the score to cut the game back to 28-14.

A final possession by Gardner-Webb ran out the clock as the Tornados suffered their first loss of the season, 28-14.

Neville Bryce and Kelvin Jeter each eclipsed 120 yards on the ground and the Tornados picked up 354 yards on the ground as a team as Brevard defeated host Johnson C. Smith on Saturday afternoon, 25-21.

The Tornados struck first on the second play of the game as Jeter took the pitch from Crumbaker and went down the right sideline, before cutting back across the grain for a 63 yard score to put Brevard up 7-0.

Johnson C. Smith came right back on their first possession of the game, as a missed tackle on a screen pass led to a 41 yard gain to Dedrick Anderson for the Golden Bulls, setting up JCSU with a first down at the BC 9 yard line. The Golden Bulls converted three plays later as Carter took the snap and followed the center into the end zone to tie the game up at 7.

The Tornados retook the lead halfway through the second quarter as Neville Bryce took the handoff from Crumbaker and broke two tackles at the line of scrimmage before outracing two defenders to the goal-line from 35 yards out. Chase Henry’s extra point clanged off the right goalpost to put the score at 13-7 with 9:58 remaining in the first half.

Johnson C. Smith responded to the BC score with a drive of their own as James took the ball into the end zone from 3 yards out to put the Golden Bulls up 14-13.

The Tornados were stopped on their next possession, giving Johnson C. Smith the ball back with 1:13 remaining on the clock in the first half, but penalties offset the Golden Bulls drive, giving the Tornados the ball back for one final play in the first half at the JSCU 45 yard line. Crumbaker’s Hail Mary was intercepted by Darius Johnson at the 5 yard line to send both teams to the locker room with JCSU up 14-13.

Opening the second half, Johnson C. Smith marched down the field as James carried the ball 25 yards on four carries, before Carter found Rhyne in the front right corner of the end zone to put the Golden Bulls up 21-13 with 12:02 to play in the third quarter.

Facing a third and 12 on their next drive, the Tornados went to the air as Crumbaker threaded a pass to a wide-open Jeter on the left sideline, and the freshman weaved his way through defenders down to the JCSU 30 yard line. Four plays later, Crumbaker found a gap off the right tackle and squeezed into the end zone. Brevard went for the two-point conversion, but Jeter’s carry came short as the score sat at 21-19 with eight minutes remaining in the third quarter.

The Golden Bulls began their next drive on the JCSU 36 yard line as Carter targeted Franklin twice to set up a third-and-two situation. Carter rolled out to his left on the following play, but his attempt for the conversion was picked off by Amos as the junior came back to the ball and he was able to return it to the JCSU 25 yard line before going out-of-bound.

Brevard capitalized off the turnover, four plays later as Jeter took the option pitch around the left end and scampered untouched for 15 yards and the go-ahead score. The two-point conversion was intercepted in the end zone to put the score at 25-21 with 5:37 remaining in the third quarter.

After a defensive stop by the Tornados, JCSU punter Tyler Rabb pinned his kick at the BC 4 yard line. Bryce took the first handoff up to the 20 yard line as the Tornados began a 13 play, 71 yard drive that lasted 7:46 before turning the ball over on downs at the Golden Bulls 25 yard line.

A 35 yard completion from Carter to Franklin was the highlight of Johnson C. Smith’s next drive as the Golden Bulls moved the ball to Brevard’s 25 yard line, before Amos dove to breakup a pass targeted for Franklin in the left flat, forcing a fourth down. Going for it, Carter’s pass was overthrown, heading for Anderson, giving Brevard possession.

The Tornados were forced to punt again, giving Johnson C. Smith one last possession in the game, but a pass targeted for Franklin on fourth and nine was broken up by Gist and the Tornados ran out the clock to end the game.

Southern Virginia Game Stats/Story

Brevard opened the game with possession and march down the field on the first drive of the game, using a third down conversion by Benton on third and seven at the SVU 27-yard line. Three plays later, Xavier Johnson found pay dirt, going in from 14 yards out to put the score at 7-0, with 11:04 left on the clock in the first quarter.

Southern Virginia moved the ball into BC territory on their first possession of the game before an incompletion forced a punt, which was downed at the Brevard 15-yard line. The Tornados fumbled the first snap, but it was recovered by Crumbaker, however, a miscommunication on the next play put the ball on the ground again and this time it was recovered by Williams and the sophomore defensive back carried it into the end zone to even the score at 7-7.

Brevard came storming back on their next possession as Jeter carried the ball around the end for a nine-yard carry, before Benton broke through a hole up the middle, rumbling 54 yards all the way to the SVU 13-yard line, before punching it into the end zone on the next play. The BC extra point attempt was blocked, to put the score at 13-7.

Southern Virginia drove the ball to their own 45 yard line on their next drive, before turning the ball over on downs, and Brevard again turned to the running game, running seven times before Benton again found a gap up the middle and carried it in from 18 yards out to put the score at 20-7 with 52 seconds remaining in the opening quarter.

Two possessions later, Brevard again found the end zone after starting off with excellent field position courtesy of a strong wind gusting through Bobby Williams Field as Matt Mellor’s punt was downed at the SVU 45 yard line. Jeter carried the ball three times for 23 yards and Benton made up the remainder of the yards, finding the end zone for the third time in the afternoon, this time from 10 yards out to go up 27-7.

A 51 yard pass from Crumbaker to Fleming set up Benton’s fourth rushing touchdown of the game, as the freshman from Stanley, N.C. carried it in from six yards out and on the next possession, Crumbaker rolled out in the flat and found Benton and the fullback went in from seven yards out for his fifth touchdown of the game to put the score at 41-7 going into halftime.

Derek Church found the end zone from one yard out in Brevard’s first possession of the second half to put the score at 48-7.

Southern Virginia was forced to punt in the next possession and the ball was downed at the BC five yard line, bringing the Tornados offense onto the field. A handoff to Jeter around the left end and some great blocks upfield by the BC offensive line led to the longest play in BC history as the freshman from Gastonia, N.C. went 95 yards for the score to put Brevard up 55-7 at the end of the third quarter.

Reese and Devon Holmes each recorded their first collegiate rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter as the Tornados closed out the game with the 69-7 victory.
