Parenting is hard work, and let’s face it, sometimes at the end of a long day mom and dad just don’t feel like cooking. But despite the wealth of top-notch eateries in Asheville, the simple act of taking kids to a restaurant can present unique, stress-inducing challenges. Thankfully, plenty of local dining destinations warmly embrace their littlest customers, whether via a laid-back setting, baskets of toys delivered to the table, child-friendly food items, kids-eat-free specials or a designated play area to keep little ones busy during a wait. Here in Beer City, even many of the local craft brewer-ies welcome children and host family-friendly events throughout the year.
Here are a few of the many area establishments that go the extra mile to make families with children feel right at home:
• There’s a good reason Asheville Pizza and Brewing Co. won the 2014 Mountain Xpress Best of WNC award in the Kid-Friendly Restau-rant category: The Merrimon Avenue eatery’s huge game room; funky, fun décor; brew-and-view movie house and kid-friendly menu make it a one-stop food and entertainment center for families. And the fact that the beer is brewed right on the premises makes it a win-win for parents.
• The Bywater, third-place winner in the 2014 Best of WNC Kid-Friendly Bar category, boasts a rotating array of local food trucks at its waterside site in the River Arts District, making it an ideal place for picnics and outdoor fun.
• Highland Brewing Co. is a well-known East Asheville hangout for many local families. The brewery’s roomy indoor bar area, patio and grassy outdoor music venue provide plenty of safe space for roaming, socializing

and impromptu games of Frisbee for adults, kids and canines alike. At least one or two food trucks are always on hand to provide a quick bite. The brewery is also in the process of adding a rooftop beer garden.
• Also on the east side of town, Haw Creek’s Creekside Taphouse offers a big outdoor play area, indoor games, cornhole and, of course, the epony-mous stream to keep little ones busy while the adults sip a local brew or order from a menu full of fun munchies, burgers, sandwiches and barbecue.
Among the Asheville restaurants featuring kids-eat-free specials are: • Vinnie’s Neighborhood Italian — One free kid’s meal per adult entree all day Sundays
• Mamacita’s — One free kids meal with adult meal and drink Sundays
• Mela Indian Restaurant — One free kid’s meal per adult entree 5:30-9:30 p.m. Mondays
• The Cantina — Kids eat free all day Tuesdays
• Urban Burrito — One free kid’s meal per adult burrito or salad purchase 4 p.m.-close Tuesdays
• Mojo Kitchen and Lounge — One free kid’s meal per adult entree 5-8 p.m. Wednesdays
• Chai Pani — Two free kids meals per adult entree Wednesdays
• Earth Fare — Kids eat free with $5 purchase from the food ser-vice department, 4-8 p.m. Thursdays
• Dough — Kids eat free with purchase of an adult meal Fridays
• Lucky Otter — Kids younger than 4 eat free from the kid’s menu, and older kids can order from the kid’s menu for $1.50, every day

Despite Asheville’s compact size, its neighborhoods are as distinct and varied as can be — from downtown’s eclectic, urban vibe to West Asheville’s reinvented charm. And naturally, those areas’ neighborhood favorites also run the gamut:
15 2 0 1 5 / 2 0 1 6E AT S & D R I N K S
• The Brew Pump, Asheville’s only gas-station taproom, offers lo-cal brews, a patio and a rotating cast of featured food trucks.
• Down the street, The Double Crown, which looks like something straight out of New Orleans’ Tremé district, offers everything from a $5 bourbon list to Pappy Van Winkle.
EaS T
• Hidden in the former diner section of a gas station, The Local Joint in Fairview focuses on comfort foods like Reubens and Cubans and breakfast goodies like huevos ran-cheros and biscuits and gravy.
• The Root Bar may look pretty funky from the street, but its back-yard features a giant sandbox for adults where folks play Root Ball, a game invented by the bar’s founder that’s a mix of horseshoe and bocce.
• In Black Mountain, Foothills Deli & Butchery — identified by its massive neon sign proclaiming, sim-ply, “MEAT” — offers sandwiches and specialty flesh, including house-made hot dogs, sausages and pâtés.

• Gan Shan Station, opened by chef Patrick O’Cain from Charleston’s esteemed Xiao Bao Biscuit, offers a culinary tour of often-overlooked regional cuisines from Thailand, Vietnam, China, Korea and Japan.
• Taqueria Fast on Weaver-ville Road in Woodfin serves great tacos that are both authen-tic and cheap.
• Neighborhood favorite Ambrozia, near Beaver Lake, offers a farm-to-table, modern American edge: Think duck confit with duck breast meatloaf, or lamb sausage ragout with dumplings, or a lobster-and-chorizo potpie.

• Biltmore Village’s Fig Bistro focuses primarily on new American and French cuisine, serving up Sun-day brunch, lunch and dinner with a stellar wine list.
• Near the airport, Koreana’s South Korean-focused menu offers classic entrees and banchan — that tasty small-plate array.
• Rocky’s Hot Chicken Shack fries up some of Asheville’s best Nashville-style hot chicken, plus cold local beers. Options range from plain to an unusually spicy mild to the absolutely nucle-ar-hot “Mt. Saint Hell No!”

• Clingman Café, a popular coffee shop and informal eatery, dishes out casual favorites in an art-infused environment.
• All Souls Pizza, a wood-fired pizzeria from the minds behind the oft-praised Farm & Sparrow Bread, slices up artisan Neapolitan-style pies.
• After a beer at The Wedge, slip next door for dinner at The Bull and Beggar, where the Star Chef-award-winning Matt Dawes offers classic French preparations featuring local, Southern ingredients. There are about 20 craft breweries in Asheville and environs, rang-ing from Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.’s sprawling beer paradise in Mills River to Oyster House’s cozy Haywood Road brewpub. But in terms of growth, 2015 has definitely been the year of South Slope.
The boundaries of the South Slope neighborhood, an easy walk south of downtown, are still fuzzy, and sure, maybe Asheville Brewing, Hi-Wire and Wicked Weed aren’t right in the same few blocks as the rest. Still, when you have eight breweries to choose from within a walk-able radius, it’s something special.
Here’s a rundown of what the up-and-coming area has to offer. Mix and match to design your own South Slope brewery crawl:
• Asheville Brewing Co.: There are two locations, but you’ll want to start at the one on Coxe Avenue if you’re planning to hit the Slope. Try one of the brewery’s stellar new specialty beers — from session IPA to spiced porter — or order a Shiva for a taste of one of Asheville’s original IPAs.
• Burial Beer Co.: With a new, larger brewing system, Burial is now officially battling Wicked Weed (see below) for the title of most creative brewery in town. Don’t expect any sours, but do expect just about every-thing else. Thresher, for example, turns the idea of a coffee beer on its head by infusing a light saison with fruity Counter Culture coffee.
• Catawba Brewing Co.: After 15 years in Morganton and a couple more here after adding a temporary tasting room in town, Catawba finally has a bona fide Asheville brewery. Enjoy a beer in the sprawling open-air great hall or head back to the Rickhouse for wood-aged beers and sours.

• Green Man Brewery: What locals lovingly call Dirty Jack’s will soon sit in the shadow of Green Man’s massive new building on Buxton Avenue. Still, the beers will remain the draw. Expect classic British-inspired styles, like the flagship ESB and an ever-rotating stable of creative specialty beers.
• Hi-Wire Brewing Co.: Asheville’s circus-themed brewery is worth a stop any day of the week. While the company made a name for itself with one of the city’s first craft-brewed lagers, its other offerings — like a crisp brown ale and a wine-barrel-aged IPA — prove that it has range.
• Twin Leaf Brewery: This is one of Asheville’s newest breweries, but you’d never know it from the taproom. From beer yoga to “mutt mingle” pet adoption events, there’s almost always something interesting to pair with a well-made IPA, wit, stout or tripel.
• Wicked Weed Brewing Co. and The Funkatorium: Both the orig-inal Wicked Weed and the new Funkatorium are must-sees on any beer geek itinerary. They’re also some of the best places in town to convert your non-beer-loving friends. Order a sour or two and watch as confusion changes to bliss: Yes, beer can be this interesting.
In 1978, there were only 45 independent brew-eries in the United States. Today, there are more than 2,700, with over 100 in North Carolina—more than two dozen of those in Western North Carolina.

A substandard (or merely ordinary) cup of coffee or tea just isn’t go-ing to cut it in Western North Carolina. Infusion-savvy residents know where to find pu-er tea from Yunnan, “Dereje” heirloom coffee from Ethiopia, a pour-over iced coffee from Sumatra and the best coffee- or teahouse for hunkering down with a book. In part, that’s because nearly every town and neighborhood — and even bicycle-powered pushcarts — give residents and visitors alike their choice of high-grade coffees, teas and tisanes, Asheville also boasts several locally owned and oper-ated roasting companies that bring us the best beans.
Here are a few highlights from the Asheville area:
• Business is buzzing: High Five Coffee Bar will be opening a sec-ond location on Rankin Avenue near the back door of Tops for Shoes in downtown Asheville. Dobra Tea will open its third regional tea shop in West Asheville off Haywood Road. (That’s right, its third: We do love our teas.) And one of the area’s newest shops, The Beehive Coffee Bar, has opened in Arden on Sweeten Creek Road.
• Waking Life Espresso’s flash-brewed iced coffee is being distribut-ed far and wide; look for it in local grocery stores or buy it by the growler at the coffeehouse’s West Asheville location.
• A sampling of our Best of WNC winners for Best All-Around Coffeehouse includes the BattleCat Coffee Bar, Green Sage Café and Izzy’s Coffee Den.

• Our readers note these establishments as the best coffee/teahouses in which to savor a good read: Dobra Tea, Battery Park Book Exchange and Champagne Bar and Malaprop’s Bookstore/Cafe.
• If you like your beans freshly roasted, try these Best of WNC win-ners and nominees: Dynamite Roasting Co., Bean Werks Coffee and Tea, Mountain City Coffee Roasters, Asheville Coffee Roasters and Mountain Air Roasting.
• ExploreAsheville.com mentions these fan favorites too: The Dripo-lator Coffeehouse, Clingman Café, World Coffee Cafe and Old Europe.
WNC supports its local farmers! Direct farm sales increased nearly 70 percent in Western North Carolina between 2007 and 2012, according to the most recent USDA Census of Agriculture, while there was only
a national increase of only 8 percent during the same period.

The slow food movement is alive and thriving in Western North Carolina, but sometimes we all find ourselves in need of a quick, afford-able bite on the run. An informal poll of Mountain Xpress staffers (a busy and budget-conscious bunch) revealed that, in Asheville, the need for speedy eats doesn’t have to mean a stop at the nearest fast-food joint.
Here are a few recommendations:
• Whether you want to build your own plate of goodness from the $7.99 lunchtime pizza, salad (and dessert!) bar at Asheville Pizza Co.’s Coxe Avenue and Merrimon Avenue locations or grab a gigantic, sat-isfying slice on the go for around $2 from neighborhood favorites like Favilla’s New York Pizza, Standard Pizza or Frank’s Roman Pizza, lo-cal pizzerias get the thumbs up for good eats in a hurry.
• Tacos and burritos are made for eating en route, and Xpress staff gave Urban Burrito, White Duck Taco, Mamacita’s and the Grey Eagle Taqueria high marks for delivering good food quickly and on the cheap. All also received bonus points for atmosphere, and Urban Burrito and Mamacita’s scored extra for featuring impressive choose-your-own salsa bars.
• For fast flavors that are a bit more exotic, the lunch buffets at both Mela Indian Restaurant and Kathmandu Cafe let you get your fill of spicy curries, dal and tandoori lightning-fast for around $10.

• For those looking for more of a sit-down place, Homegrown received numerous votes for its affordable, order-at-the-counter, farm-to-table fare (its motto is “Slow food right quick”), while West Asheville Lounge and Kitchen garnered praise for its quick, budget-sensitive daily specials and family-friendly atmosphere. Apollo Flame also won multiple votes for lightning-fast service and for delivering gyros, pizza, pasta and subs at prices that between hover between $6 and $9 per entree. Rise ’n Shine Café got tapped as a breakfast option serving up tasty, inexpensive meals without a wait.
• Vegetarian and vegan staff members recommend the West Village Market for its well-stocked cooler of ready-made items to suit all diets, healthy premade snack packs and fresh-squeezed juices. Although Twisted Crepe serves plenty of meaty options, vegetarian staff members love it for its selection of veg-friendly savory and sweet crepes — a meal for under $10 in less than 10 minutes.
• For burgers and sandwiches, Nick’s Grill in Woodfin is usually busy, but it serves up burgers and gyros with a tasty tzatziki sauce with only about a five-minute wait. Downtown, Roman’s Deli is the place to go for a late lunch — after 2 p.m., half a sandwich (made with lo-cal Hickory Nut Gap Farms meat) and a side will set you back just $5. If you’d prefer not to get out of the car, Bratburger, a drive-thru on Merrimon Avenue, offers affordable bratwursts, Hickory Nut Gap Farms hot dogs and burgers made with Apple Brandy Farms beef — and you can order locally made Whit’s Frozen Custard for dessert.

Asheville takes breakfast and brunch pretty seriously. Simple or el-egant, urban or rustic, Asheville and its environs offer options ranging from a heaping stack of pancakes with eggs and bacon to a breakfast salad — and just about everything in between.
A walk through downtown on a weekend morning reveals a stagger-ing number of choices. Eateries both casual and upscale display sandwich boards touting tempting edible and drinkable specials. Craving some-thing light and vegan? No problem. Seeking a build-your-own bloody Mary bar? You’ll find more than one in Asheville. And farther afield, places like the Blue Ridge Parkway’s Pisgah Inn and Leicester’s Turkey Creek Cafe can be counted on to dish up hearty, satisfying fare.
Here are just a few of the many local breakfast and brunch spots worth checking out:
• Kosta’s Kitchen is a cozy, unassuming little diner in Fletcher that serves a large menu of family-friendly, homestyle breakfasts at affordable prices.
• Mama’s Fast Food in West Asheville is great for those with a han-kering for down-home, Southern food served with some kitsch. Old license plates, Mickey Mouse memorabilia and drive-thru speakers complement the not-necessarily-healthy but definitely delicious diner breakfasts.

• At Mayfel’s on College Street downtown, diners can use the build-your-own bloody Mary bar to add a creative tipple to any of the eatery’s numerous Louisiana-inspired breakfast and brunch items.
• The Blue Ridge, a farm-to-table artisanal buffet at the Omni Grove Park Inn is the place to take your mother on her birthday, complete with bubbly, expansive mountain views and even a dough-nut buffet to top it all off.
• Leicester’s Turkey Creek Cafe is great if you’re heading out into the country for a hike and want to stoke up with a solid Southern breakfast. A cast-iron wall display anchors the decor.
• Perched at 5,000 feet on the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Pisgah Inn is another contender for best breakfast with a view, at least dur-ing the milder months (it’s open April through October).
• A longtime Tunnel Road fix-ture, the Corner Stone restaurant is a good place to go when you’re really hungry — the menu offers huge portions of everything from pork chops to waffles.
• A much newer addition to the Tunnel Road food scene, Happy Jack’s small but thorough menu features things like hotecakes, biscuits and gravy, and more, with many items made from local ingre-dients and all at affordable prices.
• Long a local favorite, West Asheville’s Sunny Point Café is also a national hit: Its huevos rancheros were a finalist in the “Good Morn-ing America” show’s 2010 Best Breakfast in America competition.

Despite having so many great breweries in Asheville, sometimes you just need a hiatus from the hops. Those finding themselves in need of something a little stronger should consider trying a tipple from one of the city’s many creative craft cocktail lounges and savvy wine bars. Even though it was illegal to sell alcohol by the glass in Asheville until 1979, locals have since brought the city up to speed, creating a lively and diverse bar scene that runs the gamut from the upscale, farm-to-bar Sovereign Remedies downtown to the old-school funk of West Asheville’s Double Crown (voted Best Dive Bar in last year’s Best of WNC readers poll).
Here are a few potential starting points for a cocktail and wine tour of Asheville:
• With its plush couches and candlelit tables, it’s easy to disappear into your drink for an hour or two at MG Road, the India-centric cock-tail lounge that won Best Cocktails and Best Specialty Liquor Selection in the 2014 readers poll.
• If you’re craving wine, music and a great crowd, try poking your head into 5 Walnut. The unpretentious downtown bar sports a massive by-the-glass menu, multiple $5 specials and free live music by quality local bands.

• Seeking a calmer atmosphere for enjoying a Chianti or cocktail? Slide over to Cucina 24, where Donnie Pratt, winner of the 2015 Bar Wars Asheville title, curates an impeccable cocktail list and an Italian-centric wine list.
• Oh, and if the weather’s fine, the World Coffee Café’s Skybar of-fers cocktails outdoors paired with a panoramic view of Asheville from the rooftop of downtown’s Flat Iron Building.

When your sweet tooth starts making noise, it’s good to know that Asheville has myriad options offering swift and complete satisfaction. Consider these choice venues:
• The French Broad Chocolate Lounge downtown is one of Ashe-ville’s standard-bearers for quality chocolates. When you visit, be sure to sample its sipping chocolates.
• Also notable is The Chocolate Fetish: About to celebrate its 30th anniversary, this downtown favorite recently received six stars and the Grand Master Chocolatier designation in a national competition spon-sored by the International Chocolate Salon and TasteTV, placing it among the 17 Best Chocolatiers and Confectioners in America for 2015.
• For something a little more intimate, just up the street sits Chocolate Gems, which offers a more homespun, low-key experience. Truffles, ge-lato and caramels are musts, but you might also want to take the plunge and try a firecracker — an explosive little dark chocolate cone packed with dark chocolate, pop rocks and cayenne pepper.
• Karen Donatelli Cake Designs downtown garners rave reviews for its delicious (and beautiful) European pastries, tarts, cookies, minidesserts and, of course, cakes — including tiramisu, raspberry Chambord, pine-apple mandarin and more.

• If you scream for ice cream, consider The Hop, a reboot of what’s been a classic Asheville staple since the ’50s, churning up excellent hand-made ice cream. Whether you favor the standard flavors or something crazy like blueberry-kale, The Hop provides a wide range of options, now available at three locations.
• Ultimate Ice Cream crafts small batches in mouthwatering flavors like Verry Cherry, Brown Sugar Maple and Bacon, and even Black Mo-cha Stout. The shop sources its ingredients from local producers such as Imladris Farms and Hickory Nut Gap Farms; the goods can be found at Ultimate’s two shops and at various eateries around town.
• West End Bakery and Café helped launch West Asheville’s revival, and the eatery’s enormous, pitch-perfect cinnamon rolls and changing cast of scones, cookies and pastries keep customers coming back to its family-friendly digs.
The buskers you see on the street with a hat or jar out for tips might look at fi rst like a random collection of stray souls, but as you begin torealize the talent represented, also know that our buskers are organized:
The Asheville Buskers Collective advocates for street performers, holds regular meetings, has its own Facebook page and has even been featured in The New York Times.

When in the South, eat Southern. And fortunately, whether it’s fine dining or homegrown barbecue, a number of Asheville-area chefs and res-taurants are as rooted in the region as the local foods they source and serve.
• James Beard-nominated chef Elliott Moss is a Southern boy through and through. Born and bred in Florence, South Carolina, Moss has a keen appreciation for the art of wood-fired barbecue. His restau-rant, Buxton Hall, set to open in late summer or early fall 2015, will be just the 14th restaurant in the Carolinas to smoke whole hogs over a wood fire, the last vestige of a dying industry. His menu will likely reflect his passion for Southern dishes — think cheese grits, root beer baked beans and veggiecentric side dishes.
• At Southern-flavored venue Rhubarb, James Beard Award winner and former Blackberry Farm chef John Fleer slings the classics with an uptown twist, such as sorghum-glazed sweet potatoes, seared pork belly and fried green tomatoes paired with pickled shrimp. He also offers weekly Sunday Supper events whose menus play on Southern themes, such as shrimp beignets with preserved lemon remoulade or gumbo z’herbes.
• For something a bit more homespun, try North Asheville’s Home-Grown, which offers Southern comfort food served a la carte and made with local ingredients. From the pimento cheese appetizer to the butter-milk chicken (fried or grilled), Homegrown’s specialties are priced so low they’re nearly impossible to pass up.

• What would a quest for Southern cuisine be without barbecue — accompanied by Southern cornbread, collard greens and mac-and-cheese? President Barack Obama has visited Asheville several times, and at least twice, he found his way to the lunch-only, River Arts District restaurant 12 Bones, home of the “hogzilla” sandwich and baby back ribs in three to four flavors each day. North of downtown, Luella’s regularly features live music to accompany its spread of sauces and specialties, from barbecued local tempeh to Brunswick stew to fried okra.

The Buncombe County Tourism Development Authority trade-marked the term Foodtopia, and for good reason. Asheville, the farm-to-table-friendly county seat, hosts a pantheon of award-winning chefs and their renowned restaurants. The James Beard Awards are the Oscars of the food world, and several Asheville chefs keep making the grade.
• Katie Button cut her teeth at El Bulli, Spain’s acclaimed house of molecular gastronomy. She and husband Felix Meana moved to Asheville to open Cúrate and later Nightbell, the former offering riffs on tradi-tional Spanish tapas, while the latter spins homey dishes such as deviled eggs into signature works of showmanship.
• William Dissen, meanwhile, has been invited to cook at several Beard events. In 2009, he bought The Market Place, one of Asheville’s first fine-dining establishments, where you’ll savor local ingredients like Sunburst Farms trout, wood-grilled specialties and Dissen’s fine spin on mac-and-cheese.

• Over at Table, Jacob Sessoms curates curious wine lists and com-plex charcuteries. His intricate, well-thought-out dishes blend local in-gredients with international styles — think Sunburst trout croquettes with ramps salsa or Hickory Nut Gap pork with crawfish cornbread.
• And at Chai Pani, 2015 James Beard semifinalist Meherwan Irani has received much acclaim for his version of classic Indian street food that’s often given a Southern spin. He’s partnering with Elliott Moss to open Buxton Hall, a pit-fired, whole-hog barbecue outfit, later this year. And in the meantime, the pair are offering a dirty-Southern-cuisine, pop-up kitchen called The Thunderbird out of MG Road, Chai Pani’s classy downstairs cocktail lounge.

A. At least some of the odd characters that visitors encounter on the streets of Asheville are paid actors waiting for their cue when the purple bus (LaZoom Comedy Tours) comes rolling by. The rest of the oddities on the street are likely to be just us folks. “Let Your Freak Flag Fly” has been a favorite Asheville slogan for decades.

Every city has its hidden gems — eating and drinking establish-ments that locals treasure but that may not command the same attention as their higher-profile brethren.
Asheville boasts an array of those unsung heroes in just about every cor-ner of the city. Many are tucked away amid the bustling downtown, but there are also good choices to be found to the north, the west and elsewhere.
Some, such as the Buchi Bar, are connected with another, better-known local restaurant. Others, like Loretta’s Cafe, have been in more than one location during their lengthy tenure.
Still others, like Cecilia’s Kitchen, are part of a broader “culinary tour” that also includes a food truck and catering. And many, if not most, offer some form of specialized fare, whether it’s Mexican, Italian or vegan.
The best way to unearth these hidden gems may be to pick the brains of longtime neighborhood residents. But to help get you started, here’s a quick look at a number of such standout establishments:
• The Buchi Bar, downstairs from Rosetta’s Kitchen, boasts curiously creative, extremely affordable, kombucha-centric cocktails as well as Rosetta’s vegan and vegetarian soul food — and a seahorse tank to boot.
• Right next door, Loretta’s Cafe, a downtown fixture for more than 15 years, features inventive sandwich specials, homemade soups and sides, and huge salads at pocket-friendly prices.
• Tucked away in a West Asheville strip mall, Tacos Jalisco offers

some of the city’s best and most traditional Mexican food. Cold beer, hot salsas and massive tortas or tamales: How can you go wrong?
• Favilla’s New York Pizza serves up massive slices of pie in the clas-sic New York style, so big their corners curl off the plate.
• Just north of downtown, Cecilia’s Kitchen offers excellent scratch-made empanadas and tamales, both comforting and impressive, that are cooked up in its humble, one-room kitchen.

Food limitations, whether taken by choice or of necessity, can make eating out feel more like a chore than a treat. Skimming those delicious-looking menu items only to settle for the blandest dish that’s devoid of all the good stuff can beg the question, “Why go out at all?”
Thankfully, Asheville boasts a number of restaurants consistently of-fering delectable dishes and desserts for diners following an alternative diet. In fact, it’s rare to find a locally owned restaurant that isn’t ready and willing to cater to special diets. Consider these choices:
• For more than 20 years, the Laughing Seed Café has been serving up vegetarian delights with international flair. The menu also includes vegan, raw and gluten-free options.
• Posana, on Pack Square in the heart of downtown, features an en-tirely gluten-free menu of contemporary American cuisine, emphasizing local, seasonal and sustainable fare. Chef Peter Pollay spearheaded efforts to secure Asheville’s title as the nation’s first Green Dining Destination.

• North Asheville vegan restaurant Plant, which prides itself on “flavor-sophisticated, scratch-made food” recently made The Culture Trip’s list of the 10 Best Vegan Restaurants in the U.S.
• Since 2002, Rosetta’s Kitchen has been serving up reasonably priced “creative vegetarian and vegan soul foods” downtown with a lively atmosphere and late-night hours.
• Originally a food truck called Roaming in the Raw, Elements Real Food is now a brick-and-mortar storefront just north of downtown, spe-cializing in fresh-made juices and nut milks as well as vegan raw salads, sandwiches and desserts.
In addition, the following establishments were among those local eateries highly rated as “vegetarian-friendly” or “vegan-friendly” on VegGuide.org:
• The Over Easy Café downtown offers breakfast, brunch and lunch with gluten-free, vegetarian, vegan and dairy-free options.
• Mela Indian Restaurant downtown features a number of vegetar-ian and vegan entrees and has repeatedly claimed Best Indian Restaurant honors in Mountain Xpress’ Best Of WNC readers poll.
• Tupelo Honey Café, the Asheville-based regional chain, focuses on Southern comfort food; its recently overhauled menu includes both meat-free and gluten-free items.

FOOD TRUCKS AT:
Brick-and-mortar restaurants aren't the only places in Asheville to get a bite to eat. Plenty of local chefs like to stay on the move, serving their wares from food trucks, carts and other types of mobile kitchens.
FOOD TRUCKS GATHER AT: • The parking lot of
New Mountain at 38 N. French Broad Ave.
• The Lot, a food truck court on 51 Coxe ave
• Asheville Food Park on Amboy Rd., starting in June 2015
One vendor, The Coffee Pedlar, serves up his pour-over java from a custom-built trike, which he pedals all over town.

Although many people think of Asheville as Beer City due to its vibrant craft-brewing culture, the area also boasts a robust wine industry. The WNC Wine Trail currently lists nearly 30 wineries, cideries and meaderies in the region, up from 17 when the website launched in 2011.
