    Its cousin spinach may be more popular

    with foodies these days, but did you know

    silverbeet can be used in

    pretty much the same way adding

    goodness to soups, pies, lasagne, pizza and dips?

    In my book, its also much easier to grow and prepare than its leafy green relative.

    Packed full of vitamins, this long-stemmed beauty is a great companion plant too, easily filling empty or ti ght spots in your vege garden. In fact, Im often encouraging people to plant silverbeet in between rows of brassicas like broccoli or cauliflower because its ready to harvest earlier and it grows tall, rather than out.

    Keen to give it a go? Grab some Awapuni silverbeet seedlings at your local supermarket, Bunnings or The Warehouse. Or, jump online to www.awapuni.co.nz and have them sent direct to your door.

    The key to planting silverbeet is making sure your soil is well drained. If its a bit sluggish, try building it up

    into mounds. Or if youre using a pot, make sure you use a good potting mix.

    Speaking of pots, I find theyre perfect for playing host to rainbow beet. Thats right; silverbeet doesnt just come in bog-standard green and white. The rainbow variety boasts coloured stalks, and leaves in differing shades of green which can really make a statement on your deck or patio a healthy one at that. With coloured beet being a bit more sensitive than traditional silverbeet, pots also help keep the frost at bay, and allow you to position the plants for full sun.

    Whichever variety you decide to go with, planting beet is easy. Dig a little hole and place the seedling inside. Whether youre planting them in your garden or pots, simply space the seedlings around 20cm apart. From here they pretty much tend to look after themselves just make sure you keep snails at bay with our tried and true beer bait.

    Your silverbeet will be ready to harvest in around eight weeks if your soil is well-composted and free draining, or up to 12 weeks if its a bit sluggish. Try harvesting your coloured beet when its still young and add it to a spinach salad. Not

    only will it taste great, youll create a real family get- together for the two leafy cousins.

    Create a storage space for everything

    If your child knows exactly where to put something, its more likely to be put away

    be expensive. Shelves filled with ice cream containers, jars and cans can be made to look funky with a little brightening up. Spend a rainy day decorating containers and labelling them for purpose so every knickknack has a place.

    Pin it or peg itAfter the clothes and toys are

    taken care of, come up with a creative solution for all the bits of paper that come home from school. Create a clothes line where your children can peg their works of art, and have a pin board in the room where they can pin important notices from school.

    Variety Theatre of Ashburtons latest production Grease puts a modern twist on the original version. But it still promises to be a toe tapping experience for the audience with all the musicals popular songs, and more, included.

    It runs at the Ashburton Event Centre from May 15 to 23.

    Director Alice Sollis has teamed up again with musical director Jo Castelow. The pair have worked together in many different productions over the years, including Mid Canterbury Summer Singing School. In Grease, they are joined by choreographer Julia Bell.

    The 34-strong cast 17 lead parts - have met three times a week since February in their buildup to opening night. They include mostly seasoned performers from Mid Canterbury but there are some from just outside the district.

    The cast includes Nikita Hyde (Sandy), Luke Glendining (Danny), Greta Casey-Solly (Rizzo), Matt Williams (Kenicke) and Michaela George (Frenchy), T-Birds Chris

    Woods (Doody), Awa Timothy (Roger) and Luke Cossey (Sonny) and Pink Ladies Amanda Fleming (Marty) and Gabrielle Stringer (Jan).

    Tinwald School principal Peter Livingstone plays celebrity television dance judge Vince Fontaine.

    Grease is a classic love story of boy meets girl but with all the drama, and comedy, of senior high school students finding a place in their world. It is set in Rydell High School, a 1950s era high school with greasers and jocks maintaining their cool as they vie for social supremacy - and the girls.

    The production offers the audience everything they expect from the popular show but with a modern twist.

    The favourite songs such as Summer Loving, Youre the One that I Want, Hopelessly Devoted and Greased Lightning are still there to get the audiences feet tapping but Jo says the new version is better, has more harmony and more happening. There are also more group numbers.

    People want to come along and know they will hear the great songs they know, Alice says.

    And they will: however there will be a few additional songs not in the popular movie version featuring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John.

    Early rehearsals saw cast members focus on learning lines, before adding songs and now dance to their performances.

    The cast is working really hardeverything is on track, Alice says.

    The modernised show also features an eight-pieced-band, and high powered dance from a high calibre, really energetic cast.

    We have got a cast of really great singers, Jo says.

    Although the show is different to the original, it still has the best parts

    with a modern edge.I think the audience will really

    enjoy it. Theres something for everyone, Jo says.

    The cast have been absorbing their lines and routines, their choreography, and singing in four-part harmony all the while keeping the persona of their 1950s character, which they have been doing with great aplomb, Alice says.

    There are more than 20 crew involved in various aspects behind the scenes.

    Grease will be performed at the Event Centre from May 15 to 23.

    It starts at 7.30pm on show nights, with a matinee performance on May 17 at 2.30pm.
