Ashbee Home Learning – week beginning 27th April 2020 Below is suggested learning for the week. Please email to let me know which of the tasks have been completed and the level of support needed. Monday – English: Apostrophes for possession. Discuss the title of the book ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch’. Why is there an apostrophe between the r and the s? It tells us that the lighthouse belongs to Mr Grinling. Task: Copy out these sentences into your book, placing an apostrophe correctly in each sentence.

1. Mr Grinling s lighthouse was tall.

2. Mrs Grinling s kitchen smelt of lovely food.

3. Mr Grinling s boat was made of wood.

4. The seagulls didn’t like Mrs Grinling s mustard sandwiches!

5. Bert s voice was screechy!

6. Fred s voice was loud!

7. Because he was so high up, Hamish s basket ride was very scary.

Now make up 3 more sentences of your own which use apostrophes to show possession. Tuesday – English: Nouns and Adjectives. Remind your child that nouns name objects, animals and places. Adjectives describe nouns.

If possible, print off the first 2 pages of the book below. If not, children could draw it as accurately as possible into their books.

Children should then label as many things as possible on the picture with a noun and an adjective or two e.g. cool blue sea, small white cottage, noisy seagull. Spellings: last, past, father, class, grass, pass, plant, path, bath, hour. Maths: Complete one column on your Kung Fu Maths sheet. KS1 Maths The Question Book, pages 15 and 16, Numbers that add up to 100 and New sums from old.

Wednesday – English: Watch the story again online. Discuss other nouns and possible adjectives we could use in the story e.g. the chequered tablecloth, the bright yellow beam of light. Note that we can use these adjectives and nouns (noun phrases) to create some interesting sentences of our own using the book as a starting point e.g. Mr Grinling’s small rowing boat glided through the sparkling blue sea. The noisy, greedy seagulls spat out the disgusting mustard sandwiches. Task: Make up at least 5 good sentences of your own, using ideas from the story, which include noun phrases. Spellings: last, past, father, class, grass, pass, plant, path, bath, hour. Maths: Complete one column on your Kung Fu Maths sheet. KS1 Maths The Question Book, pages 17 and 18, Add, subtract and equals signs and Adding Thursday – English: Share this character map of Mrs Grinling. Is there anything they would add to it?

Discuss the character of Mr Grinling, returning to the online book to support ideas. Children create a character map for Mr Grinling, using the image below in their book or drawing a picture of Mr Grinling to label with sentences.

Computing – e-safety Continuing our work on E-safety, please remind your child of ‘Digiduck’s Big Decission’ and the key message of being kind to people online as you would in real life. Next share the story of Smartie the Penguin. Again, they may have shared this resource in the past, but it is certainly worth revisiting with your child to reinforce the messages. This story will be added to the school website. Music Visit and explore:
