Asha School
Annual Report (2010-2011)
Collaboration: Asha-Silicon Valley, US
Organization: VARUN, Naugarh, Chandauli, UP
The foremost objective of running educational institutions in Naugarh block of Chandauli
Dist. is that there should be no illiterate boy or a girl for the reason that there are no
institutions and resources. VARUN will operate in a particular community or a village
until the time Govt. establishes and functions. Once a sustainable arrangement has been
made, VARUN has to work to such a level that the people in the community should be
aware and come to realize the importance of having a school so that they can take care of
its functioning for an uninterrupted and continual education to be given to their children.
Once established, VARUN creates a plan and starts to withdraw slowly from that village.
In this respect, VARUN’s role is very clear that it reaches out to educate such people who
do not have any means of education even till this day. There are quite a few examples for
these kind of schools: Amritpur, Horila, Lerha, Shahpur and Jharia.
Similar to what has been done the previous years, during last year of 2010-2011, in
Chandauli Dist. of Naugarh block that is in the middle of jungles and hills and affected
by naxalism, we are running schools in 6 villages (5 in UP, 1 in Bihar) and trying to
provide primary education to the children of destitute dalit communities. On behalf of all
the villagers, we would want to extend heartfelt thanks for supporting us for a good
cause.
Following is the progress report for the term of 2010-11, presented for your reference.

Total 298 Students were enrolled in the 4 education centre.
This year, 14 children who cleared 5th
grade will take admission in villages near to them
like Shahpur, Saraigarh, Kaliyari, Vaini and Naugarh. Similarly children attending
classes from 1 through 4 have been promoted to higher classes.
In Jharia, Bihar, where there was a school opened last year, Bihar Govt. has opened a
school. Teachers have been appointed and Shiksha Mitra has been implemented. Hence,
with the permission of villagers VARUN will not be running school for this academic
year.
But similar to this school there is a village called Danavgarh in Naugarh block where
people belong to Musahar caste. There is no school nor any awareness about education
but the parents want their children to be educated and attend the school. The most
interesting part is, no one in the village is educated. Upon their request, VARUN went
and talked to them after that the decision has been taken to start a school over there.

In the previous session, there were 86 children out of which 25 children have enrolled in
class 8. All these children have been registered and all these children have cleared the UP
board examination. Out of these 25, majority are getting ready to enroll in class 9.
Education related various activities
Teachers meeting
Last year in 2010-11, there were 13 teacher meetings organized. Every month there are 3
meetings conducted specifically over education related activities. In this, Dr.S.P Singh,
education coordinator Shri Jay Prakash and teachers of all the centers participate and
discuss about the progress report of that month along with the challenges. Along with this
other issues related to villages are also discussed.
Student assessment
In every center, every month there is a monthly test, a quarterly test every quarter and
half-yearly exam every 6 months and an annual exam every year.
Teacher Training
Twice a year, there is a teacher training organized so that teachers can use the modern
methods along with traditional methods while teaching students.
Festivals celebrated at schools
In every center, Independence day, Gandhi Jayanti, Teacher’s day, children’s day as well
as Republic day are celebrated so that our national pride and tradition can be seeded in
our children’s minds.
Health Camps
In Shahpur, Pathraur and Sukhdeopur there was health camp organized on 25th
, 26th
February and 8th
March respectively. Dr. Asif Jamal and Dr. Omkar examined the
patients.
Various activities related to education
People from Dobahi, Sukhdeopur and Shahpur and people from other villages
also out of encouragement are building a wall.
On a particular Sunday, teachers voluntarily visit homes of children to update
their parents about the progress of their children.
Every month medicines are distributed at each center and this is supported by
local health bodies.
From 7th
to 11th
June 2010 to spread the awareness of education there was a rally
in 15 villages. All these villages are geographically situated in remote places
because of which they are cut off from the awareness about the Govt schemes,
etc. Through these campaigns, activities like wall paintings, posters, pamphlets
distribution and during the nights and afternoons alike more information about
these things are exchanged.

ministry stipulates that before the birth of the first and the second child, if the pregnant
lady registers at A.N.M/ Asha facility and the babies delivery happens in a govt hospital,
then she is entitled to Rs 1400 check.
As part of this program 60 women were registered and their delivery happened in govt
hospital and they received 1400 Rs with the aid of varun. This way 68 women got a total
of Rs 95,200.
In the same way as part of the “tying the tube program” each woman is entitled to Rs
1000 from the government. In the appropriate villages the women were educated about
the benefits of small families and they were encouraged to tie their tube which resulted in
Rs 41000 given out by govt.

Women Empowerment Program
As part of the women empowerment program Varun has implemented at a block level a
women federation which has around 2000 members. These members have been divided
into small units across the society. Every month they have a meeting in which they
discuss the current issues as well as their personal issues. This way when there is a
vacancy in any government program or scheme then Varun identifies the appropriate
members and associates them with these programs. This why they get associated with the
societal program and this also improves their family’s financial situation. Varun has done
such programs during 2010/2011 and below are the details of such programs.

Since the Naugad block does not have irrigation facility it is dependent on rain water. The
farmers have small part of land and the sand is red leterite. So in hand the land is less the
other had the soil is not fertile. For the farmers, farming is the source of income for 6
months. Understanding this need Varun has implemented 37 farmers club constantly
updates them with modern techniques for farming.

Seed and Grain Bank
Initially due to poor financial condition they could not buy high yielding seeds from the
market. When they formed self help groups and were able to save some money and the
bank was also able to give them loads. Slowly they were encouraged to buy high yielding
seeds from the market.
In the beginning to encourage the seed bank, Varun also supplied them with high yielding
seeds. After some time the seed bank becomes grain bank. This way they are able to sell
the grains and buy from the market new varieties of seeds which are deposited in the seed
bank.
Below are the details of the seed and the grain bank.

Activities as part of the Panchayat Raj
In Sept 2010 the elections for UP Panchayat’s were complete. During the elections in all
villages Varun encouraged people to elect good candidates. In this endeavor its worth
mentioning the role of the women and their groups. In some villages the women groups
had put up their own candidates for the election. The results of the elections were
unexpected. The details of the elected candidates are below.
