1. Proposal Summary

Amar Seva Sangam (ASSA) is a premier organisation in the field of disability management focusing on rural areas, located in Ayikudy Village in Tirunelveli District in South Tamil Nadu, about 160 kms from Madurai. Sri S. Ramakrishnan, while in his 4th year engineering, injured his spine while attending the last round of Naval officers’ selection test and became a quadriplegic. He established ASSA in 1981, the year for the Disabled and named it after his Doctor and mentor Air Marshal Dr. Amarjit Singh Chahal of Defence hospital. Shri Ramakrishnan is the President of ASSA. Sri S. Sankara Raman, a Chartered Accountant and a wheel chair user, affected by muscular dystrophy joined ASSA in 1992. He is the Secretary of ASSA. Together they have built a Valley for the physically challenged in a 30 acre land at Aiykudy, as a Rehabilitation and Development Centre and developing models for self-help initiatives by integrating the disabled individuals with the society for improved living conditions. Several Institution based initiatives and Village based rehabilitation programmes are offered to provide rehabilitation, education, training and employment Generation to physically challenged people across 800 plus village and 14000+ people

SANGAMAM – School for Special children

Sangamam literally means integration / meeting. In this school meant for Special children in the age group of 6 to 16, we try to prepare them to get integrated gradually with the society at large to the extent possible in each case.

Children with special needs learn more slowly than a typical child. People with mild intellectual disability are capable of learning reading and get mathematics skills to approximately the level of a typical child aged nine to twelve. Moderate intellectual disability is nearly always apparent within the first few years. People with moderate intellectual disability need considerable support in school, at home, and in the community in order to participate fully. While their academic potential is limited, they can learn simple health and safety skills and participate in simple activities. Our special children are also provided training for behaviour modification through special education techniques. The kids are trained in daily living skills such as eating, dressing, grooming, and toileting so that they can attend to their daily needs with more confidence as the ordinary children of their age group. From 1997 to 2017 we had enrolled 221 children with special needs out of which 46 have been successfully mainstreamed. At present we have 8 special educators and 2 special educator assistants, 2 teaching assistants and 4 helpers besides attending to the needs of 95 children. In addition to that 25

children which consist of 21 boys and 4 girls have been mainstreamed in general schools along with normal peers. They are picked up from four different directions from their residences in the rural villages and dropped back at their doorsteps by our van free of cost. In some cases, escorts wherever needed for some children who also accompany them in the van. Sangamam School does not have vehicles of their own. Presently, the vans of Siva Saraswati Vidyalaya, our inclusive Higher Secondary School are pressed in to service to fetch these children as well. This causes heavy burden on the time management and thereby inconveniences the children in many respects viz., the special children are made to spend more time in the school. Some children miss out their timely food and medicines. This proposal is for seeking funds for purchase of two pick up vans exclusively for our Sangamam School children for a total cost of Rs.32,75,210.

We currently have 54 physically challenged employees in our rolls out of the total staff strength of 271, working out as 20% of our employees. potential is limited, they can learn simple health and safety skills and participate in simple activities. Our special children are also provided training for behaviour modification through special education techniques. The kids are trained in daily living skills such as eating, dressing, grooming, and toileting, so that they can attend to their daily needs with more confidence as the ordinary children of their age group. In 1997, a day care centre was started with just 9 children and 2 teachers. What was initially only a spastic center has now grown into a full-fledged preparatory school for special children. Some of them from far off places are now accommodated as Residential care students also while the majority is day care students. With your generous and kind support our school is expanding its activities. From 1997 to 2017 we had enrolled 221 children with special needs out of which 46 have been successfully mainstreamed. At present we have 8 special educators and 2 special educator assistants, 2 teaching assistants and 4 helpers besides attending to the needs of 95 children. In some cases, escorts wherever needed for some children who also accompany them in the van. The infrastructure so created includes 8 class rooms, a store room, an office room and a physiotherapy hall. Apart from these, we also have a play area with a slide, a pair of swings, a parallel bar, a merry go round and motor planning equipment to improve their gross motor activities involving more muscular movement.

Special children term covers broad categories of Mentally Retarded, Cerebral Palsy and Autism affected. Their “Special needs” is a broad umbrella under which a staggering array of diagnoses can be fitted. Children with special needs may have mild learning disabilities or profound cognitive impairment; food allergies or terminal illness; developmental delays that catch up quickly or remain entrenched; occasional panic attacks or serious psychiatric problems. The designation is useful for getting needed services, setting appropriate goals, and gaining understanding for a child and its stressed family. The children are brought to school by our own bus. They are provided free uniform, nutritious lunch, biscuits and milk. They are trained in daily living activities, behavioral science, self-care, basic reading, writing and vocational skills. Rehabilitation services like Special education, Physiotherapy, Speech therapy and Yoga are also part of the curriculum to improve their health and intellectual ability. We have divided the classes as Primary, Primary 1, Secondary and Pre-vocational stages. In the case of new admissions, the child is sent to a suitable class based on the age and ability assessed through Basic Mental Retardation check list. 9 At Primary level, focus is on developing their activities of daily living like grooming, bathing

and toileting. Then basic conceptual developments in cognition along with language development and basic reading and writing skills are imparted.

9 At Secondary level the focus is on training the children (10-14 yrs of age) in the area of reading, writing, language and arithmetic skills.

9 Once the children are ready to cope up with general curriculum, they are shifted to a suitable class in our High school where they continue studies with general students including physically challenged. The teachers are fully apprised of taking care of the needs of the Special children. Our resource teacher also helps them to carry on their basic academics so that there is a smooth transition.

9 At primary 1 level, children who have not achieved the par 80% or more will be transferred to

this class and more intensive training will be given as like primary class will be given to the children with different teaching strategies.

9 Pre vocational class consists of children of age group 14-18 where they will be given basic training for cutting, pasting and counting which will be helpful for their future vocational and income generated activities.

9 Our students are encouraged to take part in cultural and sports competitions and have won several cups and shields at district as well as state levels. The events include Singing, dancing, collage work, drawing, art and craft work, fancy dress, 100 / 50 meter running, musical chair, long jump, hurdles, cricket ball throw, long jump, shot put and potato gathering.

Sangamam School does not have vehicles of their own. Presently, the vans of Siva Saraswati Vidyalaya, our inclusive Higher Secondary School are pressed in to service to fetch these children as well. This causes heavy burden on the time management and thereby inconveniences the children in many respects viz., the special children are made to spend more time in the school waiting for their turn to return home. Some children miss out their timely food and medicines adding to their problems . SUCCESS STORY V.Thangasudali She was enrolled in July 2005 in Special School. She was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy (90%). Initially she had difficulties with toilet control and required more specialized attention in education. After two years of training in hygiene and education in special school, she felt confident to be integrated in regular school. She was integrated into Siva saraswathi vidyalaya school at 2007. Now she is even more confident as she studies 10th std in a regular school. She has secured 414 marks in the Public examination. She developed academic skills in all areas of curriculum and competent enough with their peers. Along with academic skills she also developed social and emotional skills in inclusive setup. She doesn’t need any special support from additional teacher as her class teacher is confident on her independent learning skills.

5. Need Statement

x Sangamam School does not have exclusive vans at its disposal x A minimum of two vehicles required to ferry Sangamam children from various villages

in and around our Campus. x Presently three vehicles from our Siva Saraswati Higher Secondary School are pressed

in to service to pick up these children in addition to the load of ferrying the regular school children

x The number of special children attending our Sangamam school is gradually increasing, necessitating a minimum of two pick up vehicles. The present strength of Sangamam School is 95 children. Out of this 66 children are getting basic training and therapy. 29 children who have shown improvement are attending our regular inclusive school. 25 more children, who are our past students, are attending Sangamam School for vocational training and other activities.

x Exclusive vans for the purposes of Sangamam School activities would ease the pressure of bringing the children to the Sangamam School on time and drop them back on time as well.

6. FUNDING REQUEST
