Hope’s Spire

We’re Called to Look Forward Faithfully & Turn Together in Christ Our denomination’s Future Directions 2025: Goals & Priority Areas document was drafted in late

2015. The “five goals” below were crafted to serve as a touchstone identity and mission tool. The

goals express what this church has said is important to our shared future: as ELCA churches we are

called to become…

1. A thriving church spreading Christ’s gospel and deepening faith for everyone;

2. A church equipping people for their baptismal vocations in the world and this church;

3. An inviting and welcoming church that reflects and embraces the diversity of our

communities along with the gifts and opportunities that such diversity inherently brings with

it;

4. A visible church deeply committed to working ecumenically and with other people of all

faiths for justice, peace, and reconciliation within communities and around the globe; and

5. A well-governed, connected, and sustainable church.

Within these goals, we are invited to learn more, and to consider how our own communities might

move toward achieving many of these goals in our shared future. Together, our congregations,

synods, and national leadership, look to the future of God’s church—The Five Goals,

ELCA.org/future, nuanced.

Hi all. It’s not lent yet and we are well within the process of selecting our next

bishop—see the details below and your prayers are appreciated. I also only just found

out from a rediscovered letter that fell behind a bookcase in my office that since

2015 we’ve had something of a set of marching orders for getting us to 2025. Take a

moment and consider all this because as weird as it feels to say “lent of 2020” imagine

me learning that our churchwide office has been planning for 2025 since 2015… Again,

take a moment and then be glad that they did. The above 5 goals won’t solve

everything, but they do give us a place to start and some directions as a congregation

about what to shoot for so that we can best meet God as church in 2025 and even

2035. The goals set a tall order, but Christ’s kingdom isn’t easy to meet without God’s

grace and some faithful traveling. I believe, that I can confidently say that God’s

kingdom flexes to meet us more each day thanks, both, to Christ’s grace and the

Spirit’s perfecting of us in our own vocations as teachers and believers.

Yours along the God’s Way, Pastor Rich
