OVERVIEW

My Hebrew Phrase Book is an introductory conversationalHebrew text for students who have already spent one term or yearlearning to read Hebrew phonetically.

Most Hebrew texts are story based. My Hebrew PhraseBook is phrase based. Each chapter introduces one newvocabulary word and one new phrase that uses that word. Thephrases build upon each other, so the new word is the only one ina phrase students will not have encountered already, and eachnew word is used at least two or three phrases in a row for betterassimilation. Virtually all the phrases are useful, and can bespoken at home, with each other, and certainly in Israel.

Each chapter in this book is two pages long, designed to becompleted in one Hebrew period. A chapter consists of one newword (or two related words), one new phrase, a short readingtask, and two games, puzzles, or activities that exercise the wordsand phrases students have learned up to that point.

Hebrew roots are introduced later in the book, for wordsstudents have used for a while. Roots are presented as a tool forunderstanding the general meaning of Hebrew words, bothnouns and verbs. The roots introductions coincide with thereading sections of the later chapters.

While students are expected to have learned to readphonetically before starting this book, the reading exercises in thefirst ten chapters are designed as a transitional text, reintroducingthe Hebrew letters three or four at a time, with the assumptionthat many students may have forgotten them over the summerand will need to have their memories jarred. Vowel sounds

would need to be reviewed prior to beginning, for knowledge ofthese is assumed.

This is a secular text; the vocabulary is not specificallyprayer based. Appropriate prayer work should be included as aseparate component of the curriculum, providing variety inmaterials and activities.

HOW TO TEACH My Hebrew Phrase Book

My Hebrew Phrase Book is easy to teach. Each session withthe text consists of the following steps:

1) Flash card review of all words encountered so far.2) Whole class review of phrases encountered so far,

using the check list in the back of the book. 3) Introduction of new chapter's word and phrase,

checking off new phrase in the back of the book and addingdefinition of new word to the dictionary. 4) Reading exercise, begun as whole class and thencontinued as class or more often with partners. 5) Continuing in partners or individually with the rest ofthe activities and puzzles in the chapter.

While students are working individually or in partners, theteacher should circulate, answering questions and listening tostudents read the reading exercise.

SUPPLEMENTARY WORKSHEETS

This teacher's guide contains supplementary worksheets forphotocopying as needed. There is one worksheet for every twobook chapters. The worksheets include additional readingpractice and vocabulary and phrase exercises, games and drills. They can be used in class or assigned as homework.

The reading exercises in the first five worksheets coincidewith the book's letter introductions, and provide a significantadditional amount of practice. As with the text itself, they can bedone in groups, in partners, or as a class.

The next six worksheets each begin with two or three versesfrom chapter 37 of Genesis (The start of the Joseph story) forreading practice. The verse numbers are given; the teacher canprovide an oral or written translation for all of Genesis Chapter37 when the first of these worksheets is encountered, or canprovide a translation of the verses as they are read. These versescan also be used in any other way the teacher wishes, includingadditional vocabulary, searches for key words, etc. The text tothe rest of chapter 37 of Genesis (verses 17 - 33) is contained ona handout which you will find immediately after the worksheetfor Phrase Book chapters 35 & 36. This is followed by anEnglish translation of the whole Genesis chapter.

[1] Jacob dwelt in the land of his father's sojournings, in the land ofCanaan. [2] This is the history of the family of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was shepherding the flock withhis brothers; he was a lad with the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, hisfather's wives; and Joseph brought an ill report of them to theirfather. [3] Now Israel loved Joseph more than any other of hischildren, because he was the son of his old age; and he made him along robe with sleeves. [4] But when his brothers saw that theirfather loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him, andcould not speak peaceably to him.

[5] Now Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothersthey only hated him the more. [6] He said to them, "Hear thisdream which I have dreamed: [7] behold, we were binding sheavesin the field, and lo, my sheaf arose and stood upright; and behold, your sheaves gathered round it, and bowed down to my sheaf." [8]His brothers said to him, "Are you indeed to reign over us? Or areyou indeed to have dominion over us?" So they hated him yet morefor his dreams and for hiswords.

[9] Then he dreamed another dream, and told it to his brothers, andsaid, "Behold, I have dreamed another dream; and behold, the sun,the moon, and eleven stars were bowing down to me." [10] But when he told it to his father and to his brothers, his fatherrebuked him, and said to him, "What is this dream that you havedreamed? Shall I and your mother and your brothers indeed cometo bow ourselves to the ground before you?" [11] And his brotherswere jealous of him, but his father kept the saying in mind.

[12] Now his brothers went to pasture their father's flock nearShechem. [13] And Israel said to Joseph, "Are not your brotherspasturing the flock at Shechem? Come, I will send you to them."And he said to him, "Here I am." [14] So he said to him, "Go now,see if it is well with your brothers, and with the flock; and bring meword again." So he sent him from the valley of Hebron, and hecame to Shechem. [15] And a man found him wandering in thefields; and the man asked him, "What are you seeking?" [16] "I amseeking my brothers," he said, "tell me, I pray you, where they arepasturing the flock." [17] And the man said, "They have gone away, for I heard them say, `Let us go to Dothan.'" So Joseph went afterhis brothers, and found them at Dothan.

[18] They saw him afar off, and before he came near to them theyconspired against him to kill him. [19] They said to one another,"Here comes this dreamer. [20] Come now, let us kill him andthrow him into one of the pits; then we shall say that a wild beasthas devoured him, and we shall see what will become of hisdreams." [21] But when Reuben heard it, he delivered him out oftheir hands, saying, "Let us not take his life." [22] And Reuben saidto them, "Shed no blood; cast him into this pit here in thewilderness, but lay no hand upon him" -- that he might rescue himout of their hand, to restore him to his father. [23] So when Josephcame to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe, the long robewith sleeves that he wore; [24] and they took him and cast him intoa pit. The pit was empty, there was no water in it.

[25] Then they sat down to eat; and looking up they saw a caravanof Ish'maelites coming from Gilead, with their camels bearing gum, balm, and myrrh, on their way to carry it down to Egypt. [26] ThenJudah said to his brothers, "What profit is it if we slay our brotherand conceal his blood? [27] Come, let us sell him to the

Ish'maelites, and let not our hand be upon him, for he is ourbrother, our own flesh." And his brothers heeded him. [28] Then Mid'ianite traders passed by; and they drew Joseph upand lifted him out of the pit, and sold him to the Ish'maelites fortwenty shekels of silver; and they took Joseph to Egypt.

29] When Reuben returned to the pit and saw that Joseph was notin the pit, he rent his clothes [30] and returned to his brothers, andsaid, "The lad is gone; and I, where shall I go?" [31] Then they tookJoseph's robe, and killed a goat, and dipped the robe in the blood;[32] and they sent the long robe with sleeves and brought it to theirfather, and said, "This we have found; see now whether it is yourson's robe or not." [33] And he recognized it, and said, "It is myson's robe; a wild beast has devoured him; Joseph is without doubttorn to pieces."

[34] Then Jacob rent his garments, and put sackcloth upon hisloins, and mourned for his son many days. [35] All his sons and allhis daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to becomforted, and said, "No, I shall go down to Sheol to my son, mourning." Thus his father wept for him. [36] Meanwhile theMid'ianites had sold him in Egypt to Pot'i-phar, an officer ofPharaoh, the captain of the guard.
