201516 CATALOGUE SUPPLEMENT: CALIFORNIACALIFORNIA CAMPUS
ADMISSION
The MAT Program is defined by forms of active
inquiry and mutual support that advance learning and
professional growth. Creating a collaborative educa-
tional community begins with the selection of a tal-
ented, energetic, and diverse cohort of students
during the admission process.
Program applicants must have received a bachelors
degree from an accredited institution in the liberal
arts with a major (or equivalent) in the discipline they
intend to study at Bard. Students are accepted into
the MAT Program on the basis of an assessment of
various components: records of academic achieve-
ment that show a minimum cumulative average of B
(3.0), evaluations in the letters of reference, and pro-
fessional goals. A complete listing of prerequisites by
discipline may be found on the MAT website,
www.bard.edu/mat.
The priority admission deadline is April 1, 2015. All
applications completed by April 1 are processed in an
initial priority cycle. Applicants are notified of
Admission Committee decisions and financial aid
awards within three weeks of this date.
If space is still available, applications submitted after
April 1, 2015, are reviewed weekly, on a rolling basis,
until the cohort is filled. Applicants are notified of
admission and financial aid decisions within two to
three weeks after the week in which the completed
application is received. Applications will be accepted
through May 20, 2015.
Enrollment in the program is confirmed upon receipt
of the signed financial aid letter and a nonrefundable
deposit of $500. With an emphasis on seminar-style
classes, the MAT Program limits the size of each dis-
ciplinary cohort in biology, literature, history, and
mathematics. Applications reviewed after the limit
has been reached will be considered for deferred
admission to the 201617 academic year.
The Bard MAT Program in California is a 12-month
program that runs from July 2015 through June 2016.
Music is offered only at the Los Angeles campus and
is coordinated through the Longy School of Music at
Bard College.

CALIFORNIA TEACHERRESIDENCY PROGRAM
The Bard MAT Program is located at the Heart of Los Angeles (HOLA)
campus, a community-based organization serving local youth for the past
25 years. MAT students complete the bulk of their graduate studies in Los
Angeles and gain important experiences working with students at HOLA.
In addition, MAT students have the option of completing the major portion
of their practicum in Los Angeles schools or Bard partner rural schools in
the Central Valley. The HOLA campus is shared with the Longy School of
Music of Bard College.
Teacher candidates will begin work in a sequence of classroom settings
throughout the year of graduate studies. These experiences are struc-
tured developmentally, moving candidates from classroom observers to
close work with students in individual or small group settings to teaching
assistant and, finally, to the position of coteacher, taking responsibility for
planning, instruction, and assessment. Candidates will pursue their resi-
dency in either urban or rural school settings, working to develop expert-
ise in teaching the populations of students where they will be hired as
teachers the following year.

Other FeesThe Bard MAT Program in California offers California single-subject
credentialing in English Language Arts, social science, mathematics, and
biology.
Fees related to requirements for California single-subject credentials are
set by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) and are
incurred by the MAT student. MAT faculty and program administrators
will shepherd students through the credentialing process, but it is the
responsibility of the student to fulfill these requirements, and the student
must supply the results to the MAT Program in order to graduate. Total
costs may vary depending on the subject area and current registration
fees, but should not exceed $900.
These requirements include:
1. CTC application for teaching credential:
www.ctc.ca.gov/credentials/leaflets/c1659.pdg
2. California Technology Assistance Project (CTAP)

at a local community college

RefundsNo refunds of any fees are made in the event that a student withdraws
from the program after registration, except as specified below. In no event
is the deposit refundable. In all cases, the student must submit to the
Graduate Committee an official notice of intention to withdraw. The date
of receipt of such a notice determines the amount of the refund. Students
who officially withdraw before the first day of classes (start of work-
shops) for the term in question are given a full refund, minus the nonre-
fundable deposit.
If official withdrawal from the program occurs in the first week of classes
or workshops, 75 percent of tuition is refunded; within the second week,
60 percent; within the third or fourth week, 30 percent. After four weeks,
no refunds are given. Fees for registration, student health insurance, and
facilities are nonrefundable.
If a student who is receiving financial aid withdraws from the program, the
award or loan is prorated. Institutional fellowships are reduced by the
same percentage as indicated in the tuition refund schedule above. Federal
Direct Loans are calculated according to the federal refund policy on the
amount of the loan to be returned to the lender. A student who is consid-
ering withdrawal may wish to confer with the Student Accounts Office and
Financial Aid Office concerning any anticipated refund and the amount of
the Federal Direct Loan that the College must return to the lender. This
amount has a direct bearing on the amount of the refund, if any, that the
College will provide the student.
No refund is made in cases of suspension or expulsion.
FINANCIAL AID
Bard offers several types of financial aid to help offset the costs of tuition and
fees. Aid is in the form of fellowships, scholarships, and federal loans. The
Master of Arts in Teaching Program does not offer teaching assistantships,
federal work-study opportunities, or tuition waivers. All students are eligible to
apply for scholarships; only U.S. citizens and permanent residents may apply for
fellowships and federal loans.
For general information on financial aid, including necessary forms,
resources, and information for international students, go to Bard Colleges
financial aid website at www.bard.edu/financialaid or call the Office of
Financial Aid at 845-752-4795. For information related specifically to
MAT fellowships and scholarships, please contact [email protected] or
call 1-800-460-3243.
SCHOLARSHIPS AND LOANS (need based)
ScholarshipsA student may qualify for financial assistance in the form of scholarships
or loans, depending on financial need. Financial need is assessed by a uni-
form method from financial data submitted by the student on the Free
Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form, available online at
www.fafsa.ed.gov.
Financial need is the difference between the students budget of expenses
and the assessed ability of the student to meet those expenses. No stu-
dent who is in default on a student loan or who owes a refund on a federal
grant is eligible for financial aid.
Those whose applications are received on or before the priority deadline
of April 1, 2015, receive first consideration for assistance funds.
Applications received after this deadline are considered in order of receipt
until all scholarship assistance funds are committed.
Federal Direct LoanStudents who are citizens or permanent residents of the United States
and who file a FAFSA are eligible to borrow through the Federal Direct
Loan program. Graduate students may borrow up to $20,500 annually
through an unsubsidized Federal Direct Loan, provided the total amount
of assistance does not exceed the graduate programs annual cost of
attendance.
An unsubsidized Federal Direct Loan does not require demonstration of
financial need. The student begins paying interest charges on the loan
while enrolled in school; repayment on the loan principal begins six
months after the student ceases to be enrolled at least half time.
Federal Grad PLUS LoanGraduate students can now access the Federal Grad PLUS Loan Program
to pay for the cost of education not covered by other financial aid. This
loan is guaranteed (contingent on credit check) by the federal govern-
ment and may be deferred while the student is enrolled at least half time.
A credit check is required. These loans are disbursed in the same way as
the Federal Direct Loan.
FELLOWSHIPS
Additional scholarship opportunities may become available after the publica-
tion of this catalogue, and fellowship options are subject to change. Please visit
our website for up-to-date information.
Teacher Residency Program FellowshipQualified applicants may be eligible for up to $30,000 through funding
made available by a Teacher Quality Partnership Grant, awarded to Bards
MAT Program in California by the U.S. Department of Education Office of
Innovation and Improvement. This award supports the Bard MAT
Programs unique approach to teacher education, in which graduate stud-
ies and classroom experiences are integrated during a year of study and
practice in public schools through extended field placements in urban
schools in Los Angeles or rural schools in Californias Central Valley.
Fellowship recipients must commit to teaching in a federally designated
high-needs public school in Los Angeles or the Central Valley for a mini-
mum of three years after degree completion. To apply for the Residency
Fellowship, applicants must meet all MAT Program acceptance criteria
and complete the additional steps listed below.
Additional application steps for the Residency Program Fellowship:
1. A personal statement of no more than 750 words that explains the
applicants commitment to teaching and interest in the unique educa-
tional needs of urban students in Los Angeles or rural students in the
Central Valley.
2. An additional letter of recommendation from an individual who can
describe the applicants interests, strengths, experiences, and/or
motivations as they apply to a teaching commitment in public educa-
tion in Los Angeles or the Central Valley.
3. An interview with the MAT faculty.
Peace Corps Coverdell Fellows ProgramThe Bard MAT Program is proud to announce its status as a Coverdell
Fellows program, offering additional support to MAT candidates who
have served as Peace Corps volunteers.
The Paul D. Coverdell Fellows Program (formerly known as Fellows/USA)
offers returned Peace Corps volunteers financial aid, such as scholarships
and stipends, to participate in graduate-level work at more than 70 part-
ner schools. Masters and doctoral degrees, combined with work in
underserved American communities, prepare Fellows for careers in a wide
range of disciplines. Volunteers who satisfactorily complete their Peace
Corps service gain lifetime eligibility for the Coverdell Fellows program.
Bard MAT is delighted to partner with the Peace Corps in supporting the
education of Coverdell Fellows to become excellent teachers in the
United States.

ACCOMMODATIONS AND MEALS
The Los Angeles campus of the Bard MAT Program is uniquely integrated
with the campus of Heart of Los Angeles (HOLA). Many of the standard
college facilities do not exist at the residency program site in Los Angeles.
There are no dormitories or dining halls. Graduate students are responsi-
ble for making their own housing and transportation arrangements.
MEDICAL RECORDS AND HEALTH INSURANCE
All students are required to complete a health packet prior to arrival at
Bard, which includes documentation of a recent physical examination and
complete immunization records. California law requires that all students
born after January 1, 1957, provide proof of immunization against
measles, mumps, and rubella. Additionally, students are provided infor-
mation from Bard about meningococcal meningitis; they must either doc-
ument having received the vaccine or sign a waiver declining it. Students
who decline Bards insurance are required to show proof of health insur-
ance coverage from another provider. For information about immuniza-
tion requirements and health insurance, contact the Student Health
Service at 845-758-7077 or [email protected].
