THE TABTOUCH MASTERSSERIOUSLY GOOD TIMES

RAILWAY STAKES

WINTERBOTTOM STAKES

KINGSTON TOWN CLASSIC

Perth Racing invites you and your horses to enjoy seriously good times at The 2018 TABtouch Masters, the third edition of the world’s only single-track racing festival featuring a Group One race worth at least $1,000,000 on three consecutive Saturdays.

The Kirin-Railway Stakes, Perth’s oldest Group One race, will get The TABtouch Masters under starter’s orders on Saturday 24 November; it is Ascot Racecourse’s classiest day of the year featuring six black type contests, including the Sky Racing-WA Guineas at Group Two level. Rhys Radford-trained gelding Great Shot led all the way to secure the 2017 Railway Stakes.

The Crown Perth-Winterbottom Stakes, Australia’s last Group One sprint of the year, will be the second-up feature of The TABtouch Masters on Saturday 1 December. Mighty mare Viddora, the pride of South Australia, pulled off an interstate raid in 2017 for her Western Australia-born trainer, Lloyd Kennewell, and her large travelling band of owners who celebrated long into the night.

And the Magic Millions-Kingston Town Classic, the southern hemisphere’s richest Group One 1,800 metres event, will wrap up The TABtouch Masters on Saturday 8 December; it honours one of the sport’s all-time greats, which made his final appearance in 1982 when he took out what was then known as the Western Mail Classic in front of a massive crowd. Alan Mathews-prepared gelding Pounamu claimed the 2017 Kingston Town Classic.

Perth Racing’s invitation to The TABtouch Masters is a sincere one; its revised Equine All Stars Incentive Scheme continues to subsidise the travel costs of Railway Stakes, WA Guineas, Winterbottom Stakes and/or Kingston Town Classic runners from outside Western Australia and now assists visiting horses in other races. You can read all about the scheme on pages four and five.

The TABtouch Masters is part of Perth Racing’s commitment to iconic events that bring people together to share unique racing and non-racing experiences. Each day of The TABtouch Masters boasts a unique theme – racing purists on Railway Stakes Day, life of the country on Winterbottom Stakes Day – it also features the finals of the Regional Championship: The Road to Ascot and the WA Country Cups Fashions on the Field – and families and friends on Kingston Town Classic Day. Nearly 50,000 people enjoyed seriously good times during the first two editions of The TABtouch Masters so check out this year’s travel and hospitality packages on pages 10 and 11 because you do not have to be connected to a competing horse to experience extraordinary in Western Australia.

Nominations for the Railway Stakes, the WA Guineas, the Winterbottom Stakes and the Kingston Town Classic will close at 12:00 Australian Western Standard Time on Monday 15 October.

Perth Racing looks forward to seeing you at Ascot Racecourse for The TABtouch Masters in which the best of the west will take on the best of the rest across 27 races - 11 of them with black type status - worth a total exceeding $5,000,000 in prizemoney.

EQUINE ALL STARS INCENTIVE SCHEME

BLACK HEART BART

Perth Racing’s revised Equine All Stars Incentive Scheme continues to subsidise the travel costs of Group One and Group Two runners from outside Western Australia and now assists visiting horses in other races.

The new and improved scheme still provides connections of Kirin-Railway Stakes, Sky Racing-WA Guineas, Crown Perth-Winterbottom Stakes and/or Magic Millions-Kingston Town Classic runners with effectively risk-free shots at glory in those four highly prized contests and its 2018 version also slashes the expenses associated with travelling a horse to compete in one or more of the 14 other black type events - four of which are restricted to fillies and mares - during The TABtouch Masters and the final four Saturdays of the Ascot Racing Carnival.

Participation in the scheme is not compulsory but, to access its many benefits, a representative of the incentivised horse must enter into an agreement with Perth Racing and Racing and Wagering Western Australia. The agreement empowers RWWA to rebate agreed monies if the incentivised horse places first to 10th in the Railway Stakes, the WA Guineas, the Winterbottom Stakes and/or the Kingston Town Classic. Rebates do not apply to other races but the scheme delivers fewer benefits to incentivised horses which do not run in the Railway Stakes, the WA Guineas, the Winterbottom Stakes and/or the Kingston Town Classic.

Perth Racing’s innovative scheme has been operational since 2016 and it has been instrumental to The TABtouch Masters breaking nomination and participation records in each of its first two editions. For example, Australia’s four winningmost trainers this season - Chris Waller, Darren Weir, James Cummings and the Lindsay Park Racing team of David Hayes, Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig - sent horses to last term’s second staging of The TABtouch Masters, while New Zealand-based Allan Sharrock campaigned then five-time Group One winner Kawi in the Lee-Steere Stakes, the Railway Stakes and the Kingston Town Classic of two years ago.

Many of the biggest names in Australian and international racing have experienced seriously good times at The TABtouch Masters over the last couple of seasons. Do not hestitate to contact either Grant Burns or Mark Worwood (see the back page for their details) if you would like to know more about Perth Racing’s acclaimed scheme and how it works in practice.

KIRIN RAILWAY STAKES (1,600 METRES)

The Kirin-Railway Stakes is Perth’s oldest Group One race, an illustrious contest with a proud history dating back to Nimrod’s victory on New Year’s Eve in 1887 and a special place in the hearts of the city’s people.

Great Shot, trainer Rhys Radford and jockey Craig Staples upstaged some of the biggest names in Australian racing with a fairytale triumph in last year’s Railway Stakes. The gelding held off Darren Weir-conditioned, Brad Rawiller-ridden five-time Group One winner Black Heart Bart and Chris Waller-prepared, Damien Oliver-piloted cult hero Tom Melbourne to complete an all-the-way success, provide Radford with his first top-level trophy and reward Staples for not only introducing the connections to each other but also believing in his equine partner.

The Sky Racing-WA Guineas is Western Australia’s most valuable feature exclusively for three-year-olds and its winner frequently proceeds to the Magic Millions-Kingston Town Classic versus the older horses.

Perfect Jewel took an unconventional route to the WA Guineas but it paid off for her connections - owners Bob and Sandra Peters, trainers Grant and Alana Williams and jockey William Pike. Fourth in the Burgess Queen Stakes, the filly skipped the WA Champion Fillies Stakes to be as fresh as a daisy versus the best boys and girls of her generation, overcoming barrier 13 of 15 to run over the top of female foe Art Series and resist the challenge thrown down by Achernar Star, consequently joining her half brother, Star Exhibit, as a victor at Group Two level.

The Crown Perth-Winterbottom Stakes is Australia’s last Group One sprint of the year and its recent victors include Takeover Target, Ortensia and Buffering, all of which won at the highest level in foreign lands.

Viddora was the pride of South Australia following her brilliant success in last season’s Winterbottom Stakes, the end result of Lloyd Kennewell’s perfectly executed plan. Kennewell set Viddora, runner-up in May’s Ubet Classic and September’s AJ Moir Stakes, for December’s Winterbottom Stakes, resisting Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival opportunities and not only did the mare register her first Group One triumph but also she became the third interstate visitor in three consecutive years to parlay a $1m feature at Ascot Racecourse into a $1m Magic Millions clash at Gold Coast.

The Magic Millions-Kingston Town Classic is the southern hemisphere’s richest Group One event over its distance, a race worthy of the three-time WS Cox Plate champion, which won at Ascot Racecourse in 1982.

Pounamu was a Group-placed maiden when he left Allan Denham to join Alan Mathews in 2015 but, after frustrating Western Australian punters in his first three preparations, he came of age in his fourth WA campaign. The gelding flew home to claim the Asian Beau Stakes and secure his Railway Stakes berth. Responsible for the fastest final 400m, 600m, 800m, 1,000m and 1,200m sectionals in the Railway Stakes, Pounamu produced an even quicker burst to take out the Kingston Town Classic before adding the Ted van Heemst Stakes to his honours.
