researchers said that the results of their analysis could also be inferred to G stars like the sun.

The researchers speculated that if the Kepler spacecraft hadn’t been crippled by technical malfunctions this past spring and was able to fully continue its research mission, it would have been able to gather enough data to directly detect some Earth-size planets in the habitable zones of G-type stars. This new, more thorough analysis of Kepler data made by the researchers, shows that "nature makes about as many planets in hospitable orbits as in close-in orbits," said Howard.

Study Finds Billions of Earth-like Planets

Edited from Voice of America

Astronomers from the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Hawaii, Manoa say that based on new analysis of Kepler spacecraft data, one in five stars similar to our own sun are orbited by planets about the size of Earth, with a surface temperature that would be favorable to support life.

"What this means is, when you look up at the thousands of stars in the night sky, the nearest sun-like star with an Earth-size planet in its habitable zone is probably only 12 light years away and can be seen with the naked eye," said UC Berkeley graduate student Erik Petigura, who led the analysis of the Kepler data. "That is amazing,"

The researchers point out that just because an exoplanet (a planet that orbits a star in a solar system other than that of Earth) is Earth sized or is in an Earth-sized orbit does not automatically mean that it can support life, even if their orbits are within a star’s habitable zone, where temperatures are not too hot or too cold.

"Some may have thick atmospheres, making it so hot at the surface that DNA-like molecules would not survive," Marcy said. "Others may have rocky surfaces that could harbor liquid water suitable for living organisms. We don't know what range of planet types and their environments are suitable for life."

The team focused on 42,000 stars that are like the sun or slightly cooler and smaller.

Among those stars, the researchers said they found 603 candidate planets orbiting them. Of these candidate exoplanets, only 10 were Earth-sized, meaning that they were about one to two times the diameter of Earth and orbiting their star at a distance that would provide life supporting temperatures.

To find how many other Earth-sized planets residing in habitable zones they missed in their search, the researchers put planet-finding algorithms devised by Petigura through a number of tests. In these tests, Petigura actually threw in some fake planets into the actual Kepler data to find out which planets his software could detect and which it couldn't.

"What we're doing is taking a census of extrasolar planets, but we can't knock on every door. Only after injecting these fake planets and measuring how many we actually found, could we really pin down the number of real planets that we missed," Petigura said.

Taking several factors into consideration, such as these missing planets, and that only a small number of Earth-like exoplanets are situated in such a way that they can be seen

transiting in front of their host stars from Earth, the team estimated that 22 percent of all sun-like stars in the galaxy have Earth-size planets in their habitable zones. "Until now, no one knew exactly how common potentially habitable planets were around Sun-like stars in the galaxy," said Marcy.

Although they found all of the possibly habitable planets circling around cooler K stars, or Orange Dwarfs, which are somewhat smaller than our sun, the

Kepler is a space observatory launched by NASA to discover Earth-like planets orbiting other stars. The spacecraft, named after the Renaissance astronomer Johannes Kepler, was launched on March 7, 2009.

to keep up to date with teen programs going on at the

Ascension Parish Library.

Oseibo is one of Japan’s two traditional gift-giving seasons. The tradition originated with the custom of placing offerings on ancestors’ graves. Like all celebrations, it has changed over time. Oseibo gifts are now given as an expression of thanks to someone who has shown you kindness during the year. These gifts are typically sent out by the 20th of December. As each year passes, this tradition more closely resembles the western holiday of Christmas. Learn about how our cultures intertwine while crafting a Kirigami Christmas tree and playing fun games on Wednesday, December 4, at 4 PM, in Gonzales. You may find yourself asking, “Tetsudatte kuremasuka?” But our answer will always be, “Yes!”

Kokusaika is Japanese for “internationalization,” and that’s what this club is all about! If you’re interested in learning about the culture and history of Japan . . . if you like cosplay, playing Gomoku, folding origami, or discussing anime and manga, this club is for you! This program is open to all teens ages 12 through 18. For more information, please contact Ascension Parish Library in Gonzales at 647-3955.

Did you know …

Rudolph, the most famous of Santa's reindeer, came to life as part of a commercial promotion for Montgomery Ward department store. His first

appearance was in a story book, written in 1939 by ad copywriter Robert L. May, that was given to children visiting Santa in the store.

Marley was dead, to begin with. There is no doubt whatever about that … There is also no doubt that great books can have a lasting impression upon us. At Ascension Parish Library’s Teen Book Club, you can discuss your favorite books with other teens. Whether you’re reading classics like A Christmas Carol or new books like The Theory of Everything, we want to know what you think! You’re not required to read a specific title; just come and discuss the book that’s sitting on the floor by your bed. There’s a good chance that someone else in the club has read it and wants to talk about it too.

The Teen Book Club is held on the third Thursday of every month. Our next monthly meeting is on Thursday, December 19, at 5:30 PM, in Galvez. This program is open to all teens in 6th grade and above.

Registration is not required. For further information, call Ascension Parish Library in Galvez at 622-3339.

It’s time to let those jingle bells rock! Grab a friend and your guitar (or whatever) and come show us what you've got. Whether you're a comedian, a musician, or just an attention hog, the mic is yours for ten minutes! Join us at 6:30 PM on Tuesday, December 17, at Ascension Parish Library in Dutchtown. Listen to others and perform all in a fun, supportive setting.

No registration is required, but time on stage is limited. Refreshments are provided. Call the library at 673-8699 for more information on this or other great teen programs.
