The American Society of Civil Engineers Student Chapter at UC Davis is a community of over 100 students with interests in civil engineering. Members are active in ASCE project teams and attend weekly meetings to learn more about issues and innovations in the industry. This chapter also seeks to connect students with professionals to prepare students for working in the industry. Most importantly, this chapter connects students with each other, providing lifelong friendships and retaining students in the field of civil engineering.
2014-2015 Achievements 1. Successfully hosted the
2015 ASCE Mid-Pacific Student Conference, introducing the new construction competition.
2. Raised chapter membership to over 100 student members.
3. Hosted professional workshops with ASCE Sacramento Branch and ASCE YMF.
2015-2016 Goals 1. Host more community
socials to build a stronger civil engineering student community at UC Davis.
2. Host more professional skills and educational workshops.
3. Continue the construction competition by hosting it at UC Davis again, creating a student conference event with a construction emphasis.

The Construction Management Project is an annual competition with a design-bid-build structure. This project allows students within civil engineering to experience the complete process of planning, designing, and constructing a given project. Unlike other projects, the structure created through this project are permanent and provide lasting benefits to the hosting school.
2014-2015 Achievements 1. Successfully planned and
executed the first full-scale competition of this kind.
2. Won the first annual construction management competition at the 2015 ASCE Mid-Pacific Conference hosted at UC Davis.
3. Engaged in widespread interest in construction management as a career path as well as a project team at UC Davis.
2015-2016 Goals 1. Contribute to the 2nd
annual Construction Management Competition.
2. Recruit and educate more new members on the design-bid-build process.
3. Build and foster relationships with industry professionals.

UC Davis Steel Bridge is an inter-collegiate team that designs and fabricates a scaled down steel bridge. The bridge is constructed and judged in annual regional and national competitions. The team is a good experience for students to acquire design, fabrication, and construction skills.
2014-2015 Achievements 1. Placed 2nd at the 2015
ASCE Mid-Pacific Student Conference.
2. Increased membership by 44%.
3. Ranked top 10 at the Steel Bridge National Competition in Kansas City, Missouri.
2015-2016 Goals 1. Reclaim the national title
of first place at the Steel Bridge National Competition.
2. Connect students with industry professionals to provide internships, such as Meyers and Sons Construction and Buzz Oates Construction.
3. Increases students’ skill sets in design, fabrication of MIG and TIG welding, project management, construction, and team work.

The Concrete Canoe team participates in a multi-faceted competition steeped in tradition. Since the 1970s, students have taken up the challenge of designing and building a canoe made only of concrete and reinforcement, creating a professional grade design report, presenting and defending the design orally, and racing the canoe against competing schools. This all-around competition fosters collaboration across disciplines as well as practical application of engineering principles.
2014-2015 Achievements 1. Decreased overall
construction time by 50% through innovative process and planning.
2. By incorporating latex to our concrete mix, our canoe was lighter but more resilient than ever before.
3. Placed a top 3 finisher in the racing category.
2015-2016 Goals 1. Place top 3 in Overall
Product at the 2016 ASCE Mid-Pacific Student Conference.
2. Create an environmentally friendly reusable mold out of fiberglass and source more sustainable aggregates in our concrete mix.
3. Complete Pour Day before Winter Break.
CONCRETE CANOE 50 members | $10,000 annual budget | design tba
GEOCHALLENGE 4 members | $3,500 annual budget | geotechnical engineering

GeoChallenge is an annual national and regional competition focused on geotechnical engineering. This project consists of a miniature scale of a mechanically stabilized earth wall made of paper materials. In addition to competing with other schools, the project allows students to experience Geotechnical Engineering early on in their academic careers.
2014-2015 Achievements 1. Qualified for the 2015
GeoChallenge Nationals hosted by the Geo-Institute.
2. Placed 6th at the 2015 ASCE Mid-Pacific Student Conference.
3. Networked with geotechnical engineers and learned about employment opportunities in the field.
2015-2016 Goals 1. Compete at the 2016
GeoChallenge Nationals. 2. Recruit new
underclassmen and introduce them to Geotechnical Engineering.
3. Continue to build relationships with industry professionals and geotechnical graduate students.
ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECT 8 members | $2,500 annual budget | water treatment
Hayden Lee [email protected] (714) 887-3621
The Environmental Project is a project team that designs and constructs an on-site water treatment system at the annual ASCE Mid-Pacific Student Conference. Members gain exposure to the field of environmental engineering, practical engineering design experience, project management skills, and teamwork.
2014-2015 Achievements 1. Ranked 1st out of 13
teams in the Water Quality Category at the 2015 ASCE Mid-Pacific Student Conference.
2. Improved on oral presentation and communication skills, ranking 3rd in the oral presentation category.
3. Created an effective filtration system using mostly recycled materials from previous years.
2015-2016 Goals 1. Create a more hands-on
laboratory experience and opportunity for the team.
2. Develop communication and teamwork skills by expanding project tasks.
