Overview What is C-ID?

What does C-ID do?

How does C-ID relate to SB 1440 and the development of AA-T/AS-T degrees?

What is the current status of C-ID?

What could C-ID do?

C-ID and You

The Future of C-ID

Page 10: ASCCC Fall Plenary Dennis Bailey-Fougnier, CCCIO Michelle Pilati, ASCCC Jeff Spano, CCCCO

What is C-ID?

Course Identification Numbering System

Products Course descriptors

Processes Convening of intersegmental faculty for descriptor

development Statewide vetting of draft descriptors Submission of course outlines for review Course outline review process

Page 11: ASCCC Fall Plenary Dennis Bailey-Fougnier, CCCIO Michelle Pilati, ASCCC Jeff Spano, CCCCO

What does C-ID do?

Provides a numerical “tag”, a C-ID designation, for courses that match an intersegmentally developed descriptor

Provides a means of identifying comparable courses and of ensuring course portability within the CCCs

Addresses the need for “common course numbers”When a college submits a course outline to obtain a

C-ID designation, they are agreeing to accept other courses with that C-ID designation in lieu of their native course

Page 12: ASCCC Fall Plenary Dennis Bailey-Fougnier, CCCIO Michelle Pilati, ASCCC Jeff Spano, CCCCO

What does C-ID do? Provides a mechanism for one to many

articulationAny university can opt to articulate C-ID descriptors,

effectively granting articulation to all colleges that have a course matching a given descriptor

“descriptor-based” articulation

Offers a quality control and model for required courses in the TMCs (transfer model curricula) that are the basis of the statewide response to SB 1440 (associate degrees for transfer; AA-T/AS-T degrees)

Page 13: ASCCC Fall Plenary Dennis Bailey-Fougnier, CCCIO Michelle Pilati, ASCCC Jeff Spano, CCCCO

How does C-ID relate to SB 1440?

C-ID’s products (descriptors) describe the courses that are required in a Transfer Model Curriculum (TMC).

C-ID descriptors simplify the degree approval process at the CCCCO.

C-ID facilitates the portability of courses taken as part of AA-T/AS-T degrees.

C-ID’s processes are used to develop and vet TMCs.

Page 14: ASCCC Fall Plenary Dennis Bailey-Fougnier, CCCIO Michelle Pilati, ASCCC Jeff Spano, CCCCO

What is the current status of C-ID?

Descriptors still being developed for some required courses in finalized TMCs

Future TMCs will be developed in parallel with or AFTER descriptor development

Course outlines being submitted and reviewed for receipt of a C-ID designation

Process is slow for some disciplines due to lack of university faculty participation

Full CCC participation has not yet been obtainedAdministrative support and encouragement is needed

Page 15: ASCCC Fall Plenary Dennis Bailey-Fougnier, CCCIO Michelle Pilati, ASCCC Jeff Spano, CCCCO

What is the current status of C-ID? (October 2012)

C-ID by the numbers:Finalized descriptors

Non-ag: 204 Ag: 140

Draft descriptors: 19Additional descriptors needed to support existing

TMCs: 24Colleges that have submitted at least one COR to C-

ID: 90Number of reviewed CORs: 1,910Number of C-ID designations awarded: 1,140

Page 16: ASCCC Fall Plenary Dennis Bailey-Fougnier, CCCIO Michelle Pilati, ASCCC Jeff Spano, CCCCO

CSUs have granted articulation for CSUs have granted articulation for over 900 courses in 30 disciplines…over 900 courses in 30 disciplines…

Page 17: ASCCC Fall Plenary Dennis Bailey-Fougnier, CCCIO Michelle Pilati, ASCCC Jeff Spano, CCCCO

What could C-ID do?

Descriptors could be developed for courses in CTE disciplines, transfer and non-transfer, where there is statewide consistency in curriculum.

Examples: Automotive Technology, California Association of Alcohol and Drug Educator (CAADE) approved programs

Where CTE programs are transfer programs, clear high school – community college – university pathways can be identified by linking the work of Statewide Career Pathways and C-ID.

Page 18: ASCCC Fall Plenary Dennis Bailey-Fougnier, CCCIO Michelle Pilati, ASCCC Jeff Spano, CCCCO

What could C-ID do?

C-ID could support the effort underway to work more effectively with high schools, convening faculty (CCC and HS) to discuss cut scores and to develop descriptors for basic skills courses.

As the CCCs attempt to employ the ACE guidelines to offer credit for military course work, existing and new C-ID descriptors could be used to describe the CCC courses for which credit might be awarded.

Page 19: ASCCC Fall Plenary Dennis Bailey-Fougnier, CCCIO Michelle Pilati, ASCCC Jeff Spano, CCCCO

What could C-ID do? If the CSU (and/or) UC were willing, C-ID could

offer a simplified mechanism for gaining GE status. Note: “pilot” agreed to by CSU.

Assist “swirling” students, regardless of transfer intent.

Example – pursuit of a CTE certificate that is not related to transfer.

C-ID and You Help/support/encourage faculty be ask that their

courses be submitted to C-ID

Help/support/encourage AOs to submit courses to C-ID

Educate all of campus community about the importance of and need to participate in C-ID

Foster the dialogue about the “big picture”:Benefits of TMCs for students and colleges (22 finalized!)C-ID provides “quality assurance “ within CCCs and for

universities

Students Requesting Petition to Graduate Verifications

Lists of students indicating transfer with AA-T/AS-T went to CSSOs per Bruce’s list

Why aren’t all of my college’s approved AA-T/AS-T degrees on CSU Mentor?

What should our students to do if they do not find their degree listed?

More to be done…

Remember, we are building and implementing the system at the same time so work is ongoing!

IOC meets November 19th in Sacramento

ICW meets October 30th in Sacramento

The Early Student Identification Workgroup’s next call will address process for Fall Quarter/Semester 2013

The ADegreeWithAGuarantee is being fine-tuned

C-ID is growing and is critical to our success!
