Most project specifications, including ACI301-99, “Specifications for Structural

Concrete,” reference ACI 117-90, “StandardSpecifications for Tolerances for ConcreteConstruction and Materials.” This documentallows the same thickness tolerance — +3/8 in.(+10 mm) and -1/4 in. (-6 mm) — for both slabson ground and elevated slabs 12 in. (300 mm)thick or less. These tolerances give owners,engineers, and architects false expectationsbecause no measured and reported slabs haveever met these criteria.

An article by Armand Gustaferro (“AreThickness Tolerances for Concrete Floors onGrade Realistic?” Concrete Construction, April1989) gives slab thickness data from seven proj-ects representing more than 2000 cores. Onthese projects, the standard deviation for meas-ured slab-on-ground thickness varied from 0.47to 0.90 in. (11.9 to 22.8 mm). In a later inter-view, Eldon Tipping, a floor consultant forStructural Services, Inc., and ArmandGustaferro indicate that the ACI 117-90 toler-ances for slabs-on-ground thickness are “notreasonable” and “ridiculous” (“Slab ThicknessTolerances: Are They Realistic?” ConcreteConstruction, June 2000).

“Specified Tolerances versus As-Built Data”(Concrete International, May 2002) reports thatthe average standard deviation for elevated slabthickness is 0.46 in. (11.6 mm) based on 3454measurements. In developing the load andresistance factors for ACI 318, “Building CodeRequirements for Structural Concrete,” the slabthickness standard deviation was considered tobe 0.47 in. A standard deviation of about 1/2 in.(13 mm) means that about 68% of a floor will

have a thickness within ±1/2 in. of the averagethickness. And if the average thickness is exactlyequal to the specified thickness, about 30% ofthe floor will be thinner than the -1/4 in. (-6 mm)tolerance allows. If a slab-on-ground specifica-tion requires a minimum thickness, the contractorwill need to place a slab with an average thick-ness about 1-1/2 in. (38 mm) (three standarddeviation units) greater than the minimum. Thiswill significantly increase the owner’s cost.

Slab thickness variations don’t usually lead tostrength problems. For slabs on ground, adecrease in slab thickness is often compensatedfor by higher in-place concrete strengths andsubgrade k-values than those used in the design.For elevated slabs, the use of reinforcement, andthe higher than designed-for concrete strengthoffset strength concerns related to slightly thin-ner slabs.

Based on current practice, ASCC contractorsprovide a slab thickness that meets ACI 117-90tolerances for 50% or more of the slab area. Ifslab thickness tolerances are critical, contactyour ASCC concrete contractor for a discussionof techniques and pricing that can meet yourexpectations.
