In fact this is exactly what you shouldn’t do when faced with a deadline, like an exhibition, or an art competition. So... here is the relevance..... when you are sending your entries to 2013 art competitions, or submitting works for an exhibition, try to be calm and organised and don’t panic - it doesn’t make anything happen faster or produce a better outcome. Cherry’s Chit Chat

Welcome and happy new year to all the Art

& Soul Collective Inc community. I initially

began this welcome with a rant against the

whole notion of a merry, happy festive

season, which you have all hopefully

survived and possibly enjoyed. Fortunately

the reality is never as bad as the thought of

it, especially a few days before Christmas. It

is at this point I panic because... I still

hadn’t finished shopping for gifts, decided

what to cook, shopped for the required

ingredients, put up and decorated a

Christmas tree and usually haven’t been

home long enough to wash clothes, which

makes finding clean underwear in my house

at this time of the year a real challenge!

Luckily my family is well used to this

scenario... and love me anyway – I assume.

So how is all the above, relevant to the Art

& Soul Collective Inc members? I know that

my Christmas stress was self inflicted

because I leave things to the last minute,

have huge expectations as to what I can

achieve in that last minute and like things to

be done to quite a high standard. This is a

dire scenario for creating and exhibiting art,

except for the high standard part. In fact

this is exactly what you shouldn’t do when

faced with a deadline, like an exhibition, or

an art competition. So... here is the

relevance..... when you are sending your

entries to 2013 art competitions, or

submitting works for an exhibition, try to be

calm and organised and don’t panic - it

doesn’t make anything happen faster or

produce a better outcome.

However, if being in a disorganised mess is

the only option for you (I can relate), don’t

be put off. Do enter art competitions at the

last minute and have all nighters trying to

finish your work. Our time to make art is

precious, so make the most of it.

A&SC Newsletter Vol 2.1 December 2012/January 2013 2

I hope your 2013 is the antithesis of my

Christmas preparations. Wishing you all a

New Year that is calm, artistically

connected, creatively productive and full of

inspiration where ever you look.

I look forward to seeing you at an Art &

Soul Collective Inc event over the next few

months.

Cherry

President, Art & Soul Collective Inc.

From the Secretary

Wind Whipped by Maria Romeo

Haven’t we had a busy couple of months?

The fun is set to continue with plenty going

on over the festive season and beyond.

Manly Council Grant We were successful in our application for

funding from Manly Council, having

received a Community Seeding/

Establishment Grant of $1000. Thanks to

Cherry, the main driver in this initiative, and

to the Rotary Clubs of Dee Why Warringah

(Christine McCormack) and Manly (Stuart

Reeves) for their mentoring support.

Warringah Council Cultural Development Grant The final stage of the Convergence project is

collating some data for the evaluation

report due mid February. This is coming

together and will be finalised in January

with plenty of time to submit by the

deadline.

Warringah Council Community & Culture Strategic Reference Group Warringah Councillor Wayne Gobert,

together with fellow Councillors Pat Daley

and Vanessa Moskal, are putting together a

Community & Culture Strategic Reference

Group (SRG). They want to develop an arts

centre in heart of Dee Why. The SRG will

involve all community and cultural groups

within the area. I will be representing A&SC

Inc at SRG meetings and facilitate

information transfer in both directions.

Jacki Fewtrell Gobert I recently had the opportunity to meet local

artist and curator Jacki Fewtrell Gobert at a

friend’s show in her private gallery space in

Collaroy. It is a lovely intimate space, ideal

for solo shows or perhaps two-person

shows. Check out the website for more

information

Manly Selective Campus Art59 Another opportunity coming up, though I

don’t have much information yet, is a bi-

annual art-based fundraiser at Manly

Selective Campus in Curl Curl. In 2011 it was

called Art57. In 2013 it will be Art59. I am a

coordinator for Art59 and invite all A&SC

Inc members to participate. Artists create

and donate a small artwork (any medium

on a 25cm square canvas). All canvases are

sold or auctioned at a cocktail party in May.

Artists are provided with the canvas by

mail, create their artwork and post it back

to the school (at the cost of the school) by a

deadline (April or May). More will come to

light in February. All paintings are displayed

without names of artists visible, and are

auctioned/sold on the basis of quality of

work not reputation of the artist. Here is a

small excerpt from Art57 taken from one of

the school’s newsletters:

Please email your expression of interest if

you want more information. Also, I would

love to hear from you if you have submitted

artworks in previous years. What was the

process from your point of view?

Cheers, Maria

Here are the names of the artists who have their photo album published on the Facebook page: Alenka-Alka Ognjenovic, Ann Twells, Cherry Corr, Cindy Goode Milman, Fiona Kemp, Helen Ingram, Jaqui Fitch, Josie Young, Karen Steele, Leonie Niven, Liz Pasqualini, Louise Gillespie-Hogg, Maria Romeo, Mary Ann Barnes-Armstrong, Michelle Wilkinson, Monica Clonda, Pam Henry May, Penny Polkinghorne and Sosi Stevenson.

A&SC Newsletter Vol 2.1 December 2012/January 2013 4

If your name is on the list please keep me up to date by sending me new fresh images. If your name is not on the list please try to remember to send me photographs of your artwork which you want to be published. My email: [email protected] If anyone has trouble sending photos or even taking photos of their artwork please let me know. I'm willing to do that for you for free. Just let me know so I can organise myself and we can arrange a date and time. I think photos are really important to keep our page alive and interesting as well as to advertise us as a collective. Also please recommend us to all your friends. This is our page: http://www.facebook.com/ArtSoulCollective

Have a great holiday and Merry Christmas to all of you celebrating. Regards Alenka

Congratulations to Karen Steele who had

works selected for the annual Warringah

Printmakers Exhibition. It is held at Sydney

Antique Centre Gallery, Surry Hills. It runs

until mid-January.

Congratulations to Peta Minnici who has

been accepted to study at the National Art

School in 2013.

Convergence

Congratulations go to the 17 A&SC

members who participated in the exhibition

Convergence in November.

After months of careful planning, the week-

long exhibition at Artfocus Gallery and

Studio in Brookvale, ran like clockwork. A

total of 525 people viewed the exhibition,

with 300 of those attending Opening Night.

Opening Night was hailed a great success. A

selection of photos of the exhibition and

Opening Night can be viewed on our

website and Facebook page.

Thanks go to Sarah Mufford for curating

the exhibition and for her support and

guidance in the months leading up to it.

17 artists who exhibited in Convergence

Artfocus has now closed for business. Anne

and Lynn are retiring from running the

business and will be pursuing their own

interests. We thank them for the support

they gave us before and during

Convergence and wish them both well.

Congratulations to Helen Ingram for being

invited to exhibit some paintings in

Roseberry Street Café and Coffee Roaster

during January. Thanks to Rowan Milla for

this opportunity.

Several A&SC members have been busy

pursuing professional development

opportunities. Monica Clonda has attended

2 painting workshops recently.

Cindy Goode-Milman has also been

involved in some interesting things as

follows:

Elisabeth Cummings

Cindy and Elizabeth Cummings

What an amazing 10 day retreat to

Tasmania spent with Elisabeth Cummings,

Australia’s preeminent abstract

expressionist artist. At 78 years, Elisabeth

definitely inspires one as an artist, her

gracious attitude, generous spirit,

commitment to a daily practice of sketching

(even on blowing a gale hills at 12oC…).

Some treasures she imparted were:

To forget the rules (there are no rules)

Limited palette, limited palette, limited

palette

Study other artists, even copy their

work (but do not sell) to understand

techniques and approach

Sketch your composition being mindful

of tonal values

We usually spent our days sketching then

into a studio to paint with some full day

studio practices and Elisabeth wandered

the room speaking to us individually whilst

bringing us together to go through her

favourite artists and other tips (above).

Splendid….

Alenka Ognjenovic and Leonie Niven have

recently attended printmaking classes at

Warringah Printmakers Studio in Manly

Vale. Both were beginners and not sure

what to expect. In just a few weeks they

have learnt how to prepare drypoint and

etching plates, apply ink and take prints

from these.

Pig by Leonie, Drypoint

Bottle Tree 1 by Leonie, Etching

Stone milling machine

Some A&SC members, including Penny &

Cherry, enjoyed a fascinating tour of

Stone + in Brookvale, where they learned

about a stone milling robot which can

accurately reproduce intricate 3D stone

pieces in large or small format. It has

endless possibilities.

Office of Fair Trading seminar

Cherry & Leonie attended a seminar about

registered associations which was run by

Fair Trading NSW. The Office of Liquor,

Gaming & Racing (OLGR), which licenses

groups to fundraise, also gave a

presentation. The material presented

confirmed that A&SC has ticked all the

boxes which need to be ticked in terms of

our registration and operation.

We learnt from the OLGR presentation that

A&SC is permitted to raise money for the

purpose of its own operation, but does not

have a license to fundraise for any

charitable purpose. If we wish to raise funds

for a registered charity we can do so with

the charity’s blessing and under their

fundraising license.

A&SC en plein air art

A&SC’s regular en plein air art mornings are

really enjoyable and worthwhile. The

locations are fantastic and working outside

is both inspiring and challenging. Artists do

as they wish - draw, take photographs,

paint, observe, take rubbings…the company

is great and it’s free! Don’t be shy – come

and join us. See Events Calendar for details.
