Campaign Receives $ 200 , 000 T he Forrest General Healthcare Foundation’s Asbury Hospice House capital campaign recently received a $200,000 donation from South Mississippi Home Health Foundation (SMHHF) and Deaconess Home Care and Hospice employees. “We recognize the need for inpatient hospice care in our community and are pleased to partner with the Forrest General Healthcare Foundation and Forrest General Hospital by making this donation,” said Mary Stainton, South Mississippi Home Health Foundation Board president. Bill Oliver, president, Forrest General Healthcare Foundation said, “Deaconess’ donation helps express how important this unique project is to all the residents of south Mississippi. This type of collaboration is certainly a great sign for the ultimate success of this new facility.” As of mid-September, the campaign has reached $4.8 million in contributions and pledges, with groundbreaking for the Asbury Hospice House set for the near future. It will be built on South 40th Avenue near the Haiesburg Post Office on nearly five acres of land donated by Susan Thomson and her brother, John Thomson. When completed, the new Hospice House will provide a peaceful, home-like seing where staff can address the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of each patient and family. When stepping into the home, families will find meditation rooms, a chapel, serenity gardens, spacious patient rooms, dining area and kitchen facilities and children’s play areas – all of the comforts of home, designed to provide for every aspect of care that a family may need when facing the terminal illness of their loved one. “With the help of the Foundation’s volunteers, hospital employees, community support and donations like this one, we are proud to have the South Mississippi Home Health Foundation and Deaconess Home Care and Hospice employees join us in helping build a facility that will allow us to realize our vision of providing exceptional care and improving the quality of life for terminally ill patients and their families,” said Evan Dillard, president and CEO of Forrest Health. Hospice care is provided for those with a limited life expectancy and focuses on making patients as free of pain and comfortable as possible while improving their quality of life. Hospice staff members work hand-in-hand with palliative care nurses and physicians who focus on the unique needs of a patient facing a terminal illness. The Pine Belt is in need of a facility like the Asbury Hospice House to help with those patients who need around-the-clock care but may not have caregivers who can provide that at home. DIGNITY IN DYING

Years ago Dr. D.B. Conerly and Libby Carroll began to champion hospice care in the Pine Belt

community, inspiring many, including Peggy and Frank McWhorter, who have helped raise the funds to make the Hospice House of Southeast Mississippi a reality. “Dr. Conerly and Libby introduced me to hospice through my Junior Auxiliary service project,” Peggy explained. Dr. Conerly was the medical director of Forrest General Hospice and Carroll was a social worker with the group that began recruiting volunteers for home hospice in 1994. “Dr. Conerly would give the most eloquent pitch, leaving everyone thinking, ‘Sign me up,’ and Libby touched so many with her hospice care.” For several years Peggy served as a sitter for hospice patients in their homes, allowing family members to take a break. “This is how I got interested in hospice,” Peggy

shared. “It was so worthwhile.” She said the Hospice House appealed to her because she felt that for some patients a facility is a better option than in-home hospice care. “I like the idea of going to a family-friendly setting without being at home.”

Today Peggy and Frank serve as co-chairs of the Forrest General Healthcare Foundation’s Chairman’s Society along with Terri and Ross Bell. The Chairman’s Society is one of the levels of giving to the Asbury Hospice House. Members make a pledge of $10,000 to $99,999, payable over a multi-year period. The McWhorters are also members of the Chairman’s Society and the Meditation Garden at the

Hospice House will be named in their honor. “I was scared to death of raising $5 million, but it was the easiest fundraising project I’ve ever had the privilege to work on. This community was very generous and jumped on board,” said Frank, who also serves as the Foundation Chair. Frank noted that Foundation

be a great benefit to the Asbury Hospice House. We are looking forward to having such a wonderful facility within our community to benefit all patients at the end of life with care that will enhance quality of life and provide comfort, compassion, and dignity.”

Forrest General Healthcare Foundation is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization. While gifts of cash are the most popular method of supporting the Foundation,

there are options available to potential donors:

• Cash and Pledges• Matching Gifts• Memorials

• Wills and Trusts• Restricted and Unrestricted Gifts

For more information or to make a donation, please contact Martha Dearman, executive director, at 601.288.4396.

President Bill Oliver was the driving force in the campaign because, “He won’t take no for an answer.” The couple pointed out that this was a unifying project that brought all of the area’s medical community together and will serve 19 counties in Southeast Mississippi. “We are blessed to live in a community that offers the absolute finest in healthcare availability. The Pine Belt and south Mississippi have long been recognized as an area that affords individuals excellence in healthcare in a broad range of specialties,” said Frank. “I believe that the missing link in our healthcare community is a Hospice Home where the end of life

experience offers a place of solitude and dignity to patients and their families.” Hospice care emphasizes maintaining dignity, improving quality of life and providing compassionate care and comfort. The new Hospice House will provide a peaceful, home-like setting where staff can address the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of each patient and family. Thanks to the McWhorters and other fundraisers who have championed this cause, the Hospice House will provide dignity in dying and inspire many generations to come.

GIVING HEARTS

When the Asbury Hospice House groundbreaking takes place many people and companies will be

recognized for their support of the project. Terri and Ross Bell believe the entire Hattiesburg community should thank itself. “This community is unreal,” said Terri, who is president of B Communications and serves on the FGH Foundation Board. “Hattiesburg has a giving heart.” The couple also has a giving heart, which led them to co-chair the Chairman’s Society with Peggy and Frank McWhorter. The Chairman’s Society is one of the levels of giving to the Asbury Hospice House. Members make a pledge of $10,000 to $99,999, payable over a multi-year period. The Bells are also members of the Chairman’s Society and the Nurse’s Station in the Hospice House will be named in their honor. “We saw the need to raise awareness and money for the Hospice House and to let people know the opportunity is there,” said Ross, a vice president with BancorpSouth Insurance. He added that he understands that not everyone can give to the Hospice House. “They may have other areas they give to, but Hattiesburg people are passionate about charities.” Ross complimented Bill Oliver, president of the FGH Foundation, for making their fundraising efforts worthwhile. “Bill Oliver is an awesome man. He has stature in the community and is an ambassador for the hospice house.” Terri added, “We’d make a contact, then Bill and Martha (Martha Dearman, FGH Foundation director) would do the rest.” In addition to the couple’s civic consciousness, their support of the Hospice House is also fueled by a trying experience when Terri’s father suffered a heart attack

Terri and Ross Bell with their sons: Garner, 24, who is a second-year medical student at William Carey University, and Preston, 20, who is a junior at Southern Miss.

and died six weeks later. Terri says her father received excellent and compassionate care at Forrest General Hospital, which made them aware of the need for hospice care. “It was made apparent to us how important it is to keep a family member comfortable and the need for a caring environment for the entire family,” Terri said. “There’s a professional way to handle end-of-life issues,” Ross said, pointing out that the Hospice House will give patients and families this much-needed care. “You have to have a heart to work in healthcare. They are born nurturers and caregivers and they have a need to serve. It’s who they are; what they do.” Fortunately for the FGH Foundation and the Asbury Hospice House, Terri and Ross also have the need to serve – it is who they are and what they do.

Becky Oliver’s “The Light Beyond,” was one of 15 pieces of art selected to make up the Louisiana-Mississippi Hospice & Palliative Care Organization

(LMHPCO) Collection. The collection represents the dignity and compassion LMHPCO members provide to patients and families. The exhibit will travel to 15 communities in Louisiana and Mississippi between September 2014 and December 2015. “’The Light Beyond’ represents the peace that we all can find as we transition to the next stage of life,” said Becky, who is from Hattiesburg and is the wife of Bill Oliver, president of the Forrest General Healthcare Foundation. “I intended to show the light of God shining through the trinity of pines among the white flowers representing holiness. My hope is that it represents a sign from heaven for those seeking that peace as they near death. I was honored to be a part of this project and hope that ‘The Light Beyond’ helps others recognize the peace that God offers all of us.” Visit http://www.lmhpco.org/news/index/shtml to learn more about this exciting project.
