Becauseeducation,moresothananyothersectorofdevelopment,seedsdramaticimprovementinpovertyreduction,genderparity,healthoutcomes,childimmunization,AIDSprevention,environmentalprotectionandwildlifeconservation.Simplyput,widelyavailablepubliceducationwillleadtoaprosperous,peacefulandsustainablefutureforAfrica.

DearFriends,TheworldisatroubledplacebutIbelievethefutureholdsgreatpromise.Whilehumanityfacesevermorepressingchallenges,morechildrenaroundtheglobeareattendingschoolandinternationalrabblerousingforgirl’seducationisgrowingeveryyear.Whydoesthismattersogreatly?Wealreadyknoweducationreducespoverty,maternaldeaths,childmarriageanddisease.Itincreaseshealthoutcomesandgenderequality.But,ifMalalaisright,andIbelievesheis,thesetrendsinglobaleducationalsomeanyoungpeoplewillbebetterpreparedtocreateamorepeacefulfutureforeveryone.Butdespitegreatprogress,millionsofchildrenarestilldeniedtheirrighttoeducation.ThatiswhyASAPremainscommittedtoimprovingaccesstoqualityeducationinruralAfricancommunities,particularlyforgirls.2015wasoureighthyeardevelopingschoolinfrastructureandeducationprogramsinTanzaniaandIamtremendouslyproudofourprogress.Since2008,ASAPhas:• Partneredwithbeneficiarycommunitiestodevelopprimaryandsecondaryschoolsforover2,000

studentseachyearintheArushaandMwanzaRegions.• Improvedacademicperformancewithteachertraining,books,computers,curriculum

enhancementsandschoollunchprograms.• BuiltthebeautifulNathanYipDormitorysothat96girlsperyeardon’thavetowalklongdistances

tosecondaryschool,puttingthematriskofattackandearlypregnancy.• DevelopedTheKupandaProjectforGirls,areplicableandholisticmodelforimprovinggirl’s

secondaryschoolcompletionratesinruralcommunities.• Ledover135volunteerstoAfrica,adedicatedandfun-seekingbunchwhocontributetimeand

treasuretoensurethatTanzanianchildrenhaveaccesstoschool.• CreatedpowerfulpartnershipswithLetGirlsLearn,ClintonGlobalInitiative,BrookingsInstitute

CHARGEforGirls,andGucci’sChimeForChange.

Noneofthisworkwouldhavebeenpossiblewithoutyou,ourloyalsupportersandpartners.Ihopeyoucontinuetosupportourwork,volunteerwithusinAfricaandhelpspreadthewordabouttheimportanceofeducationforall.Isincerelybelievethebestisyettocome,butonlyifwecontinuetopressforaworldinwhicheverychildisgiventhechancetogainknowledge,overcomeadversityandisempoweredtofindhisorherownvoice.ThankyouonbehalfoftheASAPBoardofDirectorsandtherestoftheASAPteam,

RotaryClub,ASAPdevelopedasustainable

watersystemforthe96girlslivinginthe

IdetemyaSecondarySchooldormitory.The

systeminvolvedseveralsurveys(theschoolisin

averydryarea),drillingaborehole,castingthe

well,handpumpandfilter.Inthenextphase,

wehopetoinstallasolar-poweredelectric

pumpandplumbingsystemtothekitchenand

bathrooms(theyarecurrentlyservicedbya

rainwaterharvestingsystem).

NATHANYIPDORMITORYFORGIRLSIDETEMYASECONDARYSCHOOLMWANZAREGION,NORTHERNTANZANIAGirlsinruralTanzaniancommunitiesare

forcedtowalklongdistancestoreachschool,

puttingthematriskofexhaustionand

attack/earlypregnancy.Asawarenessrises

abouttheimportanceofgirl’seducation,

communitymembersandgovernment

leadersareincreasinglycallingfordormitories

toprovidegirlsaprotectedplacetoliveand

study.Forthisreason,ASAPprioritizeditsfirstgirl’sdormitoryand,withtremendoussupport

fromTheNathanYipFoundationofDenver,CO,builtthisbeautifulfacilitythatexceedslocal

standards.

Thesecurecompoundhouses96girlseachyear

(24girlseachfromFormsI-IV)andtwomatrons.

Facilitieshavesolarpower,cleandrinkingwater

and24-hoursecurityandincludetwodormitories

withbedrooms,commonroomsforstudying/

socializingandcomputerrooms;bathroomswith

toilets,sinksandshowers;andkitchen/dining

pavilion.BuilttohonorthelifeofNathanYipfrom

DenverCO,thedormservesasthehubforThe

KupandaProjectforGirls™(seenextpage).

THEKUPANDAPROJECTFORGIRLS™TheKupandaProject™isaninnovativemodeltocomprehensivelysupportgirlstogainaqualitysecondaryschooleducationinruralTanzania.Theideaissimple–bringtogether,underoneprogram,myriadsupportsforTanzaniangirlssotheycansafelyaccessschoolandcompletetheirlowersecondaryeducation(Forms1-4).Kupandaisn’tinnovatingtheunderlyinginterventionsbutrathercombiningthemintoasimple,replicablemodel.Webelievethisnexusbetween“triedandtrue”andinnovationiswherethemostexcitingpotentialliestoimprovetheoverallresiliencyofadolescentgirlsinSubSaharanAfrica.

“Kupanda”=1.Torise.2.Togroworcultivate.(Swahili)TheKupandaProject™,launchinginearly2016willinitiallytargetruralgirlsinnorthernTanzaniaandseektoincreasetheirgraduationratestobetween50-80%(fromthecurrent4%)bytheendof2019.Oncethisprogramdemonstratessuccess,ASAPwillreplicateitthroughoutTanzaniaandotherEastAfricannations.

BOOKSANDSCHOLARSHIPS!ASAPprovidedthousandsoftextbooksandstudyguidestoimprovestudentlearningatourschools.Wealsosponsoredindividualscholarsfromourschoolswhoshowparticularacademicpromisebutcomefromimpoverishedfamiliesandcouldnototherwiseaffordtheongoingcostofschool.

PASTPROJECTS

MBASSENYPRIMARYSCHOOLMbasseny wasthefirstfocusofAmericanvolunteerswhotraveledtoTanzaniatobuild aschool inthesummerof2008.Thevillagehadaoneroomschoolhouse inverypoorcondition.With noglassonthewindows andnodesks,thechildren wereforcedtositondirtfloorsthat turnedtomud intherainyseason.Theroofleakedandteaching conditions weredifficult. Still, thechildren weredesperateforaneducation andmanystoodoutside the building inhopesofsomedaymakingitinside theschool. Today,aftersixyearsofASAPprojectassistance,theMbaasenyPrimarySchool haseight classroomswithwindows, desks,teacherhousing, toilets, akitchen, playinggroundsandover450+students. Forthelastthreeconsecutive years100%ofthe standardsevenclasshaspassedthenational examandmatriculated tosecondaryschool.

MIRIRINISECONDARYSCHOOLTheMiririni SecondarySchool islocated intheMomela LakesregionoftheLegurukiward.Theschool’s firsttwoclassroomswerebuilt entirelybytheMiririni villagersinordertoprovidetheirchildren with asecondaryeducation which wasnotaccessible before2008. Afterthevillagecompleted thefirsttwoclassrooms,ASAPstepped intohelp theschool construct twomorein2009. In2012ASAPcompleted twoadditional classrooms,givingtheschool atotal ofsix.

KIRENGAPRIMARYSCHOOLKirenga PrimarySchoolwasalittle oneroomschool onlythreekilometers fromthevillageofKing’ori,themainmarkettown ofthedistrict. Itwasinasimilar condition tomost Tanzaniancommunity schools—those built byvillagerswho haveanincomeoflessthan$1perdayperfamily.In2009,ASAPdecided theschool wasextremelyworthyofassistance. Overthecourseoffouryears,ASAPhelpedconstruct afourclassroomschool building(complete with glasswindows, desksandbooks),thenasecond building with threemoreclassrooms,asoccerfield,akitchenwith afuel-efficient stove,atoilet building, arain-watercapturesystem/cistern forcleandrinkingwaterandanoutdoor classroomwith agazebo(toprovide additional learningspacewhentheweatherisdry).

CHOLEPRIMARYSCHOOLIn2008,thevillageofChole wascreatedinaruralcommunity onthebanksofLakeVictoriainNorthernTanzania.Thecommunitystruggledtoconstruct aprimaryschool sotheirsmallchildrenwereforcedtowalkseveralkilometerseachdaytoaneighboringschool (creatinganovercrowdingproblem) ortosimplystayout ofschool altogether. InNovember2013,ASAPmetwithcommunity leadersandformedastrongpartnershiptohelpbuild theirschool.Weconstructed theschool in2014andit isnow serving450children.

VOLUNTEERS Eachyear,ASAPvolunteersventuretoTanzaniatohelpbuildcommunityschools inruralareasofnorthern Tanzania.OurHighSchoolVolunteer andFriends&FamilyVolunteergroupscometogether tolendahand in theconstruction ofaschool.Attheendofeachworkday,volunteersenjoycampingalongtheshoresofbeautiful LakeVictoria,playingsoccerwithlocalchildrenandenjoying localfoodandconversationaroundthecampfire.Itisaonce-in-a-lifetimeexperienceforall!

“BeforeweleftforTanzania,the projectmanagersaid:‘Untilyougethere,youcannot knowhowsignificant yourcontribution isandhowdeeply itisvalued.Thisisalife-changing experienceforthevillage…’ Eachwordprovedtrue.Itwas,andis,significant anddeeply-valued,byboth theAmericansandtheTanzanians.Itwaslife-changing –forusall.”- 2014ASAPvolunteer

WithaMaster’sDegreeinCommunityDevelopmentandprofessionalexperience inFemaleEmpowerment, thispowerfulTanzanianwomanwillensureourprogramsremaineffectiveandculturallyappropriate.
