In these pieces, we wanted to create a single narrative from both the past and the present of Asahikawa as well as its relationship between people and the forest. This story is divided into three chapters which are a metaphor that expresses the movement from the cultural climate of Asahikawa to the symbiotic relationship between its people and forests, then concludes with the process from which the furniture of Asahikawa is crafted. The snow, forests and people all symbolize Asahikawa, and they shine the brightest when linked together. We hope that through our work you will be able to feel the light cast into the world by the furniture of Asahikawa.

by DAISY BALLOON

「Hitotomori」

Artist collective DAISY BALLOON created installation work for ADW this year. The unit is active in a wide range of fields, from

installations at GINZA SIX and Matsuya Ginza, as well as for major television commercials, costume design and even album jackets.

Employing 20,000 white balloons to express the symbiotic relationship between humanity and nature, they impressed visitors with

both their sense of scale and whimsical construction. Children were also invited to make their own balloon creations, and their

happy faces as they added to the installation were especially memorable.

OPEN FACTORY & ASAHIKAWA FULL COURSEDate : June 20(Wed) ‒ 24(Sun) 9:00 ‒ 18:00Venue : Each manufacturer / showroom, factory

Open factories are a well-loved part of the event every year. Many companies once again opened up their factories to the public,

giving everyone the opportunity to get a taste of on-location furniture production. Each company conducted this event at their own

factory warehouse using ideas unique to that particular furniture maker, such as an exhibition of trial products conceptualized

during the furniture manufacturing process. Woodworking classes geared toward the local community were held along with a host

of other events which continued to welcome many guests straight through the weekend. Asahikawa Full Course was popular again

this year, offering cuisine made of local ingredients borrowing the skills of a variety of businesses, including handmade soba and last

year’s hit, Ashoro cheese raclette.

ADW KAMIKAWA FOOD TOURISMDate : June 20(Wed) ‒ 24(Sun) 9:00 ‒ 18:00Venue : Asahikawa Design Center

New efforts have begun to combine cuisine and design through a collaboration between ADW and Kamikawa Food Tourism that

unlocks greater possibility within Hokkaido tourism. We set up Cruise Kitchen, the f irst bus in Japan equipped with a full kitchen. This

full-f ledged restaurant hosted a daily rotation of chefs from area restaurants preparing meals utilizing local ingredients. Lunch service,

which has been lacking in suff icient options, proved to be a massive hit, and we also set up a trial dinner event geared toward members

of the food industry and other contributing parties, so this project is quite likely to continue into next year’s event. We also set up the

Marche in the outdoor space, which was lined with vendors for customers to peruse in search of local products and specialties.*A Kamikawa based culinary promotions project whose name is derived from the Japanese words for “cuisine” and “fairy tale”

Following Toshiyuki Kita’s special lecture event, we held a party in collaboration with Kamikawa Tabe-Monogatri at Asahikawa

Taisetsu Crystal Hall. Here, visitors were treated to a wide variety of cuisine prepared by area chefs using local ingredients.

Although this was the f irst year we enforced a participation fee, we exceeded the 500-participant capacity, fulf illing our goal of

building even greater bonds of communication than last year.

This year was the f irst time we tried setting up an after-hours restaurant inside the Asahikawa Design Center. Here, a tasting menu was

provided to members of the food industry and other contributing members by a cooperating ADW Tabe-Monogatari Dining chef. This

dinner, set against a truly Asahikawa Furniture atmosphere of tables, chairs and installations, proved to be a massive success which we

expect to newly expand upon next year.
