Asaduddin Owaisi (13 May 1968 Hyderabad) is an Indian politician, who is thePresident of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen.[3][4][5] He is a three-time Member of Parliament (MP), representing the Hyderabad constituency inLok Sabha, the Lower House of the Indian Parliament.[1] He was honouredwith Sansad Ratna Award for overall best performance in 15th Lok Sabha in2014.

Early life

Asaduddin Owaisi was born in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh. His father SultanSalahuddin Owaisi was also a politician and a former Member of Parliamentfrom Hyderabad, for six consecutive terms.His mother's name isNajamunnisa. Asad studied at the Hyderabad Public School and the St. Mary'sJunior Collage, Hyderabad. He graduated as a Bachelor of Arts from theNizam College, Osmania University. He later went to London, where hestudied L.L.B, and Barrister-at-Law (Lincolns Inn), England. He is oftenreferred as Naqeeb-e-Millat ("Leader of the community") by his supporters.He has two younger brothers, Akbaruddin Owaisi and Burhanuddin Owaisi.Akbar is the member of the Telangana Legislative Assembly from theChandrayangutta Assembly constituency, while Burhanuddin is the editor ofthe local Urdu daily "Etemad".

Political career

Asaduddin Owaisi was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA)in 1994 and 1999. Subsequently, he was elected as an MP in 2004 and 2009.In response to the 2012 Assam violence, he warned that a lack of properrehabilitation of the Muslim victims may lead to radicalization of the Muslimyouth in India. On 20 January 2013, he was remanded to judicial custody for14 days in a 2005 case, and later shifted to Sangareddy jail. The case relatedto an MIM protest against the demolition of a mosque for a road-wideningproject in Medak district, on 16 April 2005 where Police booked him undervarious charges including criminal intimidation, rioting and promoting enmitybetween religious groups.[16] Asaduddin Owaisi was given the 2014 SansadRatna Award for his distinguished performance in the 15th Lok Sabha.

Controversy[edit]

In 2009,a case was registered against Asaduddin Owaisi on the order ofElection Commission of India,for chasing and beating up Syed Saleemuddin ,apolling agent of Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in the Maghalpura area.[19][20] Heand his brother had also been jailed for threatening the district collector of

Medak district in 2005 for a road widening issue.[21] In March2013,Asaduddin Owaisi was detained for organising rally without permissionand carrying gun without license in Bidar,Karnataka.[22] In January 2014,heurged the Muslims to not watch Salman Khan's film Jai Ho as he praisedNarendra Modi.[23] Reacting to this,Salman said that he is half Hindu and halfMuslim. So, he has closeness to both the communities. His mother is Hindu,his father is Muslim and there is nothing else, he would want to have themtogether.Currently,he has four cases against him which were takencognisance of by various courts of law between 2001 and 2011. Whilecharges in three cases have not been framed,charges in a fourth case with IXJMSC in Naded, Maharashtra have been framed.[14]

In June 2014, Owaissi is said to have delivered hate speech against PrimeMinister Narendra Modi seeking Muslim community's support to his party.[24][25]

Akbaruddin Owaisi (born 14 June 1970) is an Indian politician based inHyderabad, Telangana and an MLA of the Telangana Legislative Assembly.[1]He belongs to All India Majlis-e Ittihad al-Muslimin and is its floor leader inAndhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly.[1] Akbaruddin is a member of theOwaisi family, the son of Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi and the younger brotherof Asaduddin Owaisi.

Early and Personal life

Akbaruddin Owaisi was born in Hyderabad on 14 June 1970. He studied in theHyderabad Public School till tenth grade and completed his intermediate fromSt. Mary's Junior College in Hyderabad.[4] Owaisi studied medicine for twoyears in Gulbarga but quit during his second year of MBBS course to enterpolitics. In 1995, Owaisi married a Christian woman(Sabina), who convertedto Islam and took the name of Sabina Farzana. The marriage was opposed byhis father Salahuddin Owaisi who refused to forgive Akbaruddin. ThenAkbaruddin Owaisi and his father reconciled in 1998. The couple has onedaughter Fathima and son Nooruddin.

Akbaruddin Owaisi is the managing director of Owaisi hospital, which was setup by his late father Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi for the welfare of the Muslims.

Political career

Akbaruddin has been elected as the Member of the Legislative Assembly forChandrayangutta constituency on four consecutive occasions, in 1999,2004,2009 and 2014. He served as a deputy to his elder brother AsaduddinOwaisi, who was leading the MIM in the House.In 2004, Akbaruddin becamethe floor leader of MIM in the Assembly upon Asaduddin's election to LokSabha from Hyderabad. He was re-elected in 2009 and lead the seven-member MIM in the House. Akbaruddin Owaisi won his fourth consecutivevictory in Assembly polls from Chandrayangutta assembly.

Attack on Akbaruddin

Owaisi survived an attempt on his life in May 2011 when four personsassociated with property dealer Mohammed Pehlwan attacked him over aproperty dispute.[1] Owaisi was stabbed and then shot thrice as he wassitting in his jeep, and was later admitted in a critical state to the OwaisiHospital in Hyderabad. Supporters of Owaisi and Pehlwan had clashed twoyears earlier during May 2009 elections as well.

While defending himself from the attackers, Owaisi's body guard shot IbrahimYounus Yafai and a murder case was booked against him by Chandrayanguttapolice.

On May 18, 2014 Bangalore police have reportedly busted a plot toassassinate Akbaruddin Owaisi, a leader of political party All India Majlis-eIttihad al-Muslimin (AIMIM), and arrested four persons who had been allegedlyhired to kill him.

Controversial speeches[edit]

In August 2007, along with other elected and serving members of his party,Owaisi made death threats against Tasleema Nasreen, pledging that thefatwa against her and Salman Rushdie were to be abided by. Owaisi said, "wein Hyderabad want to behead this woman according to the fatwa."

While speaking at a rally in Kurnool in 2011, Owaisi used the derogatoryterms Kafirs and Kufrastan to refer to MLAs in Andhra Pradesh LegislativeAssembly and the Legislative Assembly.In the same rally he used the Urduwords katil (murderer), darinda (monster), beimaan (dishonest), dhokebaaz(cheat), and chor (thief) for the former Prime Minister of India P V NarasimhaRao.[25] Owaisi said that if Rao had not died, he (Owaisi) would have killedRao with his own hands.

In April 2012, Owaisi made derogatory and demeaning comments againstHindu god Rama and his mother Kaushalya. Owaisi asked "Where all didRam's mother go wandering and where did she give birth to him". This wasmet with loud cheers from the audience.

In August 2012, Owaisi claimed while speaking in Karimnagar that there havebeen 50,000 riots in India over 65 years since the country becameindependent. He said that majority of those killed in the riots were Muslims.

In September 2012, Owaisi said that he will not tolerate if the illegalBangladeshi immigrants in India are sent back to Bangladesh.

In November 2012, Owaisi spoke in Hyderabad, referring to the police force ofAndhra Pradesh using the derogatory phrase "army of impotent people".Hethen incited the audience by challenging the Chief Minister to remove thepolice and then see who has more power.He further added that they (Hindusor the police force) do not have the courage to fight Muslims.[24] Owaisiclaimed in another speech that "lakhs (hundreds of thousands) of Muslimswere killed after Indian independence.

On 8 December 2012, while speaking at Nizamabad, Owaisi made fun ofHindu festivals by saying "we (Muslims) have only two festivals, they have somany – one every 10 days." He referred to the Bhagyalakshmi temple inHyderabad several times as "illegal temple".

On 12 December 2012, Owaisi made derogatory remarks with hand gesturesabout Hindu goddess Bhagyalakshmi at a public rally in Nizamabad. He saidmaking hand gestures – "She, who is sitting," and added, "What is this new

name Bhagyalakshmi, never heard of her. Shout such slogans such that theBhagya also shakes and Lakshmi also falls down." The crowd then shoutedslogans of Allahu Akbar.

Speech at Adilabad

On 22 December 2012, Owaisi addressed a rally of twenty to twenty-fivethousand people in the Nirmal town of Adilabad district of Andhra Pradesh. Inhis two-hour long speech, Owaisi made multiple comments against Hindus,Hindu deities, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, Vishva Hindu Parishad,Bharatiya Janata Party, Narendra Modi, India and United States of America. Inhis speech, Owaisi said that the 250 million Indian Muslims needed only 15minutes without the police to show one billion Hindus who is more powerful.Punjab Kesari reported that Owaisi referred to the Hindus as "impotent" andthe Indian police as the "impotent army". He said that not even one croreimpotent men can together father one child.[43] He said that these people(Hindus) cannot face the Muslims, and whenever the Muslims startdominating the Hindus, the impotent army (police) intervenes. Owaisi saidthat "we (Muslims) will not let you (India or Hindus) live peacefully," andadded that the Muslims could "teach the rest of the country a lesson".

Owaisi referred to Ajmal Amir Kasab, one of the Pakistani militants of the2008 Mumbai attacks, as a "child", and compared him with Narendra Modi.He asked if Kasab was hanged then why is Modi not hanged, and said that thereason was only because Kasab was a Pakistani and Modi is Indian. He saidthat if the Muslims of India united like the Muslims of Andhra Pradesh,Narendra Modi would soon be hanged. Owaisi threatened that if his wordswere not heard, "O India, destruction and ruin will be your fate". Hethreatened that India will witness a bloodshed which has not been seen in thelast 1000 years.He also dared Narendra Modi to come to Hyderabad,threatening by saying "we will show him then". Owaisi justified the Mumbaibombings of 1993 by saying they were a reaction to the demolition of BabriMasjid and atrocities on Muslims in India. He also questioned the punishmenthanded out to the accused of the bombings, naming Tiger Memon as one ofthose punished even though Tiger Memon is still at large.

Owaisi denigrated Hindu gods in his speech. He repeated the derogatorycomments on the Hindu god Rama and his mother Kaushalya which he madein April 2013. Owaisi mocked Hindu panentheism, saying that Hindus havemany gods and goddesses, and every eight days, new gods keep coming up.In a reference to the Bhagyalakshmi temple in Hyderabad, he said, "We knewabout Lakshmi, but who is Bhagyalakshmi, we are not aware." He added that

he does not want to ruin the gathering by taking "abominable names" ofHindu gods. Owaisi mocked Hindu cremation by saying "when you (Hindus)die, you become air after burning and go astray." Owaisi talked in derogatoryterms about heritage places of India including Ayodhya, Ajanta caves andEllora caves. He said that if Muslims go away from India, they will take the TajMahal, Red Fort and Qutb Minar with them, adding "What will then remainhere? Just a razed Ram temple in Ayodhya and naked statues of Ajanta."

Owaisi compared the state of Muslims of India to the state of Muslims of theworld and blamed India and America for the same. Owaisi said that theRashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, the Vishva Hindu Parishad, and the BharatiyaJanata Party were poisonous snakes, and to "crush their heads" a stick isenough.

After the speech, Owaisi left for London citing "medical treatment" as thereason.[38] NDTV reported on 3 January that Owaisi was getting treated forintestinal injuries he sustained when he was attacked over a land dispute in2011. Owaisi returned to Hyderabad on 7 January.

Legal proceedings

On 28 December 2012, a lawyer K. Karunasagar filed a petition in a localcourt in Nampally of Hyderabad against Akbaruddin Owaisi. Karunasagarasked the court to direct the police to register cases against Owaisi forhurting the sentiments of Hindus, and for making inflammatory, derogatoryand offensive remarks. Karunasagar received three death threats on the nightof filing the petition. Another petition was filed by a businessman S VenkateshGoud in Hyderabad.The Andhra Pradesh Human Rights Commission directedthe Hyderabad Police Commissioner to submit an inquiry report on thealleged hate speech by 17 January 2013. On 3 January 2013, Abid Khan,General Secretary of Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee, told news channelCNN IBN that the state government had "taken cognizance of speech" andthey were "collecting evidence to build a strong FIR and a water-tight casewhere we can book the person causing hatred." On 3 January, the fourthadditional chief metropolitan magistrate of the Nampally court directed theAndhra Pradesh police to register an FIR against Owaisi. Following this, thepolice filed FIRs under three sections of the Indian Penal Code – 121(attempting to wage war against Government of India), 153A (promotingenmity between groups) and 295A (outraging or insulting religion andreligious feelings or beliefs) – against Owaisi in Hyderabad, Adilabad andNizamabad. The Director General of police V. Dinesh Reddy said thatsummons were issues to Owaisi and that the police would take the help of theInterpol to arrest him if required. He added that Owaisi would be barred from

addressing public meetings in future. On 5 January 2013, a case was filedagainst Owaisi in Mumbai while a court in Vadodara served a notice on himfor his alleged hate speech.[59In May 2014,Andhra Pradesh government gavenod to prosecute Akbaruddin Owaisi in a 2004 case for an alleged hatespeech.

Arrested

Owaisi returned to Hyderabad on 7 January 2013 and was welcomed byhundreds of supporters and MIM leaders at the Hyderabad airport. He laterdrove to his house in the Banjara Hills area of the city. Owaisi failed to answerpolice summons at Nirmal town on 8 January, citing ill-health, and asked forfour days' time to appear for investigation. A team of doctors examinedOwaisi at his home twice on 7 January and the police declared that he was fitfor investigation, even though he complained of bad health. Owaisi alsopetitioned the High Court of Andhra Pradesh to quash the cases filed againsthim in lower courts. On 8 January, doctors examined him at the GandhiHospital and confirmed that their tests showed no medical grounds toprevent his arrest, following which he was arrested by Hyderabad police.Atthe Gandhi Hospital, Owaisi alleged that that the doctors were trying tomurder him by giving lethal injections.

Bail

After spending 40 days in prison, Akbaruddin Owaisi was granted bail on 15February 2013. The court approved bail for Owaisi on health grounds on abond of Rs 10,000 and two sureties.[citation needed] However, Owaisi willhave to wait for bail in another case of hate speech in a court in Nirmal townof Adilabad district.[citation needed] In both courts, his voice was recordedand sent for forensic examination as people had claimed that the voice infootage was his.

Criticism and Comments

Several notable people and organisations criticised Owaisi for the speeches.Praveen Togadia of VHP called Owaisi a "dog". The Andhra Pradesh BharatiyaJanata Party president, G. Kishan Reddy called for booking Owaisi, annulmentof his assembly membership and de-recognition of All India Majlis-e Ittihad al-Muslimin. Reddy said that "...religious bigotry, unabashed incitement ofreligious sentiments and contemptuous insinuation against Hindu gods andgoddesses formed the crux of the speeches of a person who was sworn in asan MLA". In a statement issued by the Confederation of VoluntaryAssociations (COVA) on 30 December, several social activists criticised thespeech saying that such "obnoxious" speeches will lead to division of society,violation of peace and conflicts. The social activists demanded exemplaryaction to prevent such "intolerable" acts in future. The signatories to the

statement included Asghar Ali Engineer, Swami Agnivesh, Mahesh Bhatt,Hamid Mohammed Khan, Sandeep Pandey and Ram Puniyani. Journalist andBJP leader Balbir Punj said that Owaisi's speech was tantamount to incitingMuslims to revolt against the police and army and start a civil war, and headded that the silence of the media was surprising. Senior Congress Leaderand National Spokesperson Raashid Alvi said, "I don't know what Akbar saidin his speech and i don't think he said what you just mentioned, but i am surethat Andra Pradesh Government will do the needful". Asaduddin Owaisi, elderbrother of Akbaruddin, refused to comment on the speech saying the matteris sub judice. Congress politician Digvijay Singh said that everybody shouldthink before speaking and demanded action against people making suchspeeches. TV news channel Times Now reported that the speech was soinflammatory and so provocative that they had decided not to broadcast it.ACNN IBN news report said Owaisi's speech virtually called on Muslims to takearms against the Hindus, and questioned the silence of the media andpoliticians for 10 days. Najeeb Jung, vice-Chancellor of the Jamia Millia Islamiauniversity, told CNN-IBN that the police was giving excuses of backroominvestigation, while it was only a matter of two-minutes to investigate sincethe "TV cutout" was available for everybody to see and contents of speechwere available on Wikipedia for everybody to read. Jung said that the speechincited incendiary feelings between two communities of an extremely seriousnature, and refused to believe Owaisi was ill. BJP spokesperson MukhtarAbbas Naqvi said referring to Owaisi and his party that the spirit of Osama binLaden had entered into such people and they were trying to behave like theTaliban.

The speech sparked anger and outrage on Twitter. On 28 December,journalists Karan Thapar and Swapan Dasgupta tweeted "Inflammatoryspeech by MLA Akbaruddin – Remove police for 15 mins, We will finish off 1billion Hindus." Writer Taslima Nasreen tweeted that Owaisi is trying toindoctrinate the Muslims of India and such speeches will "produce thousandsof Kasabs". Bollywood artiste Farhan Akhtar tweeted on 2 January 2013 "Howcan two girls be arrested in less than 24 hours for a harmless FB post, butOwaisi roams free after his blatantly communal rant.".
