t's the jewel in the crown of Australian motorsport – a race that stops a nation in its tracks.

The Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 is a true test of man and machine woking in

unison. Plenty have tried but only a select few have hit on upon the perfect combination to conquer the infamous 6.2km Mount Panorama circuit.

In the past the 1000km distance was treated as a real endurance classic, but today the 161-lap encounter is a glorified sprint, albeit more than six hours of fast paced toil.

This latest instalment is set to be the fastest on record too with the field due to run on a new surface which should see the lap record tumble.

With V8 Supercars enjoying arguably its most hard fought and competitive season to date, this year’s edition is likely to be another hotly contested epic.

Red Bull Racing’s Jamie Whincup remains the overwhelming favourite having dominated the opening round of the Pirtek Enduro Cup at Sandown last month.

However, the five-time V8 Supercars champion and four-time Bathurst winner has had his superiority questioned on more than one occasion this season, with both Craig Lowndes and Mark Winterbottom enjoying lengthy spells at the top of the standings.

So far this season 11 drivers and four of the five manufacturers have stood on the top step of the podium, which has led us at Speedcafe.com to cast an eye over the Top 10 pairings we think have the best chance to become King of the Mountain.

he 2014 edition of The Great Race is set up to be an all time classic. With the V8 Supercars championship enjoying unprecedented levels of competitiveness, predicting the outcome of this year’s

race is a difficult task. So far this season the championship has seen 11 drivers stand on the top of the podium with four of the five manufacturers

enjoying victories. While the usual suspects will be gunning for glory, the likes of Jamie Whincup, Craig Lowndes and Mark Winterbottom could easily find

themselves peering over their shoulders at a new wave of contenders. From the 26 car field, we have selected and analysed the Top 10 pairings we expect to be involved in the battle to decide who will be

King of the Mountain.

#1 Jamie Whincup/Paul Dumbrell – Red Bull Racing Australia

There is no questioning Jamie Whincup’s credentials when it comes to Mount Panorama having claimed four victories in a run that has seen him finish seven of his 11 starts on the podium.

Fresh from a dominant Sandown 500 victory in the opening round of the Pirtek Enduro Cup, the V8 Supercars championship leader is the man in form and is hungry for a fifth triumph after being pipped to the win by Ford Performance Racing rival Mark Winterbottom last year.

When in the groove Whincup is extremely difficult to beat, but the rest of the field can take solace from the fact he has endured his fair share of struggles this season.

Paul Dumbrell will add perhaps even more pace this year having been racking up the mileage in the Dunlop Series this season unlike last year. This has only strengthened an already solid and proven combination, ensuring the #1 car is the bookies favourite.

Speedcafe.com Rating: 9/10

#888 Craig Lowndes/Steven Richards - Red Bull Racing Australia

The arrival of reigning Bathurst winner Steven Richards to the #888 car has created an enduro super pairing for this year’s classic.

Having conquered the mountain six times, Lowndes has time and time again shown a special affinity with the Mount Panorama circuit. He has finished outside the podium places just twice since 2003, boasting an incredible average finish of 3.5 from 20 attempts.

Although he hasn’t tasted victory since 2010, this year perhaps represents his best shot for some time now driving alongside three-time winner Richards.

The son of legend Jim Richards has carved his own name into Bathurst history books and as Winterbottom found out last year, he is more than capable of mustering the skill required to be the perfect co-driver.

The pair gelled reasonably well at Sandown having powered from ninth on the grid to fourth but their biggest hurdle will be the rivals in the opposite side of the Red Bull garage.

On paper Lowndes and Richards are statistically the most successful pairing on the grid.

#5 Mark Winterbottom/Steve Owen – Ford Performance Racing

Mark Winterbottom finally achieved his Bathurst dream last year and he will be desperate not to relinquish that title with his championship challenge losing momentum.

Frosty’s title hopes have hit the buffers with the Ford man enduring a run of 10 races without a podium. His race pace has been strong throughout the season but qualifying has proved to be his downfall.

While qualifying is not totally crucial at Bathurst, this is an issue which could play a part in his title defence.

However, this year sees the 2013 winning combination of Winterbottom and Steven Richards come to an end, with Steve Owen filling the void. Owen has proved to be fast around the 6.2km circuit but has only stood on the podium once in 15 attempts.

With the mental hurdle of winning Bathurst cleared, Frosty and Owen will be a serious threat.

Speedcafe Rating: 8/10

#33 Scott McLaughlin/Alexandre Premat – Volvo Polestar Racing

Volvo could produce arguably the biggest surprise at Mount Panorama in recent years with the S60 in the hands of Scott McLaughlin a force to be reckoned with.

The S60 has emerged as one of the fastest cars on the grid with its strengths in straight-line speed and aero likely to be well suited to the fast sweeping turns of Mount Panorama.

Although a relative rookie with just two Bathurst starts under his belt, McLaughlin has finished both attempts inside the top 10, showing he is more than capable of challenging the more established runners.

However, this will be the longest race the car has completed raising question marks regarding reliability and fuel consumption. Although, the car performed without a hiccup over the 500km distance at Sandown.

Adding to these encouraging ingredients is the addition of Alexandre Premat, who also has two starts to his name. The Frenchman has proved to be fast at the venue and came close to challenging for a podium last year.

Speedcafe Rating: 7/10

#22 James Courtney/Greg Murphy – Holden Racing Team

The Holden Racing Team has enjoyed a resurgent season emerging as genuine threats to Red Bull Racing and Ford Performance Racing.

The much publicised restructure of the squad led by Adrian Burgess has elevated the team significantly providing James Courtney with a platform to show form reminiscent of his 2010 title campaign.

However, while the team has been developing its VF Commodores hard, reliability could be a barrier to victory.

This year will be Courtney’s 10th attempt at trying to add his name to the Peter Brock Trophy. In the past he has come close with three podium finishes under his belt.

Once again he will be aided by one of the Bathurst greats in Greg Murphy, who will be desperate to atone for his error last year.

With the pair in good form, Courtney and Muprhy should be considered among the favourites as they bid to claim the HRT’s first win since 2011.

Speedcafe Rating: 8/10

#2 Garth Tander/Warren Luff – Holden Racing Team

Three-time winner Garth Tander heads into Bathurst with his form turning around at the right time.

The Western Australian made a slow start to the year but in recent rounds he has come to the fore highlighted by a victory in Townsville and podiums in Sydney and Sandown.

Tander knows what it takes to win at Mount Panorama which is half the battle. A quick car from the resurgent HRT will only add to his stock for another Bathurst triumph.

Warren Luff joins Tander this year and although the pair seemed to gel on debut at Sandown, the Porsche Carrera Cup driver was not the team’s first choice partner for Tander.

Reliability could also be a concern for the Tander and Luff as the factory Holden team pushes hard to find a performance advantage.

#97 Shane van Gisbergen/Jonathon Webb – Tekno Autosports

The pairing of Shane van Gisbergen and Jonathon Webb has the potential to cause a real upset in this year’s race.

There are no question marks surrounding van Gisbergen’s pace or commitment with the Kiwi enjoying his most successful championship campaign to date having recorded three victories.

Although supremely fast, SVG has yet to really display his skills in the Great Race with his one and only top 10 finish arriving in 2011.

With 129 starts to his name, Webb will be a key factor in this partnership having been a full-time driver as recent as last year.

Tekno Autosport set up may limit them in terms of finding the crucial fractions of seconds with just the one car to gain information from.

Speedcafe Rating:7/10

#6 Chaz Mostert/Paul Morris – Ford Performance Racing

After a shaky start Chaz Mostert has begun to flourish in the surroundings of Ford Performance Racing.

The 22-year-old was clocked as the fastest on track during an impressive drive through the field to finish seventh at the Sandown 500. This turn of pace has come after recording six podiums including a victory at Barbagallo.

Although he is relatively unproven at Mount Panorama, a strong FPR car could quite easily see him become a factor at the sharp end.

Mostert will also be able to draw from the vast experience of co-driver Paul Morris.

Speedcafe Rating: 6/10

#14 Fabian Coulthard/Luke Youlden – Brad Jones Racing

Bathurst has proved to be a bogey circuit for Fabian Coulthard but his performances this season suggest he could be set for his strongest crack at the classic yet.

The Kiwi has never finished higher than 10th but has only seen the chequered flag in just five of his decade of attempts.

However, Coulthard is one of the categories most consistent performers finishing 21 of the 29 races inside the top 10.

In recent weeks the BJR squad has struggled to contend with the top teams on outright speed which could be a deciding factor for their bid to conquer the mountain.

Speedcafe Rating: 6/10

#55 David Reynolds/Dean Canto – Ford Performance Racing

David Reynolds and Dean Canto have proved to a valuable double act endearing themselves to supporters having come so close to glory in 2012.

The pair have developed an extremely strong partnership aided by a quick Ford Performance Racing Falcon.

Outright pace has never been issue at Mount Panorama with Reynolds qualifying inside the top 10 in four of his seven attempts.

However, apart from 2012 when they finished second to Jamie Whincup, finding the right race strategy has dented their hopes.

Races 30 - Bathurst 1000 I Championship Standings

Page 17: SPEEDCAFE.COM’S ULTIMATE GUIDE · 2014-10-08 · he 2014 edition of The Great Race is set up to be an all time classic. With the V8 Supercars championship enjoying unprecedented

1Ford Performance Racing is the defending Peter Brock Trophy winner at the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 but their victory

last year bucked a trend of two other teams dominating the race in recent times.

Between them, the Holden Racing Team and Triple Eight Race Engineering (Red Bull Racing Australia) have won eight of the last nine Bathurst classics.

With 2013 winners Mark Winterbottom and Steve Richards no longer driving together at FPR, this is just the second time in the last seven years that reigning Bathurst champions have not paired together to defend their crown the following year.

2Volvo makes its return to the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 this year for the first time in 16 years. Swede Rickard Rydell and

Jim Richards won the two-litre Super Touring AMP Bathurst 1000 in 1998 from pole position in a five-cylinder S40.

This year Valvoline Racing GRM will have two V8-powered S60s driven by drivers from four different nations – Scott McLaughlin (New Zealand), Alex Premat (France), Robert Dahlgren (Sweden) and Greg Ritter (Australia).

The addition of Volvo means there are five different manufacturers on the grid for a Bathurst 1000 for the first time since 1998.

3Jamie Whincup and Paul Dumbrell recently became the first combination to win the Wilson Security Sandown 500 from pole position in 18 years and history also suggests it’s going to be difficult for the pole-

sitter at Bathurst to claim victory. The car starting from pole position has won the race just three times in the last 15 years. Garth Tander and Will Davison were the last

drivers to do it back in 2009 for the Holden Racing Team.

4Holden is aiming for an unprecedented 30th win in the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 in 2014. No other manufacturer has won more Bathurst classics than Holden.

Should they claim victory at Mount Panorama this year, it would also be the 50th V8 Supercar Championship race win for the VF Commodore since it was introduced at the start of last season.

5The last four Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000s have been decided by a total combined margin of 1.2523-seconds with no race in that time won by more than half a second – amazing to consider such a

statistic after 644 laps and 4000 kilometres of racing in that time. The closest finish was 0.1733s in 2010 when Craig Lowndes led home Jamie Whincup in a 1-2 ‘form’ finish, while the closest ‘racing’

finish was 0.2917s in 2011 when Garth Tander led home Lowndes.

6Russell Ingall is the most experienced driver in this year’s Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 and is lining up for his 23rd start in the race, which he won in 1995 and 1997 with Larry Perkins.

Only 15 drivers have more starts in the history of the race than Ingall, who has a great finishing record on the Mountain with 20 finishes from 22 starts.

7Team BOC’s Jason Bright will tie the late Peter Brock for sixth on the all-time Australian Touring Car Championship/V8 Supercar Championship starts list at Bathurst.

Bright will line up for his 212th round start at Mount Panorama as he makes his 18th start in the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000.Bright won with Steve Richards in 1998 though has not finished on the podium at Bathurst since 2002 when he finished third with

Tomas Mezera.

8There are four rookies making their first Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 start in 2014 and all of them are from overseas.

Brits Oliver Gavin (Heavy Haulage Australia Racing) and Alex Buncombe (Jack Daniel’s Racing) join Swede Robert Dahlgren (Valvoline Racing GRM) and New Zealander Andre Heimgartner (Super Black Racing) as the rookie class of this year.

All bar Dahlgren has previous Mount Panorama experience – Gavin and Buncombe competed in this year’s Bathurst 12 Hour, while Heimgartner has raced at Bathurst in Porsche Carrera Cup and the Dunlop Series.

9There are 12 combinations in the 2014 Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 where the co-driver has more starts in the race than the regular, primary driver.

The biggest gap in experience levels is in the #6 Pepsi Max Crew Falcon between Chaz Mostert (one Bathurst 1000 start) and co-driver Paul Morris (21 starts).

The most experienced combination is the #888 Red Bull Racing Australia Commodore of Craig Lowndes and Steve Richards with a combined 41 Bathurst starts.

10The Dunlop Series will hold the longest race in its history at Mount Panorama with a 41-lap, 250-kilometre race on Saturday afternoon.

A total of 10 drivers are due to compete in both the Dunlop Series race and the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 – Paul Dumbrell, Andrew Jones, Paul Morris, Steve Owen, Ash Walsh, Cameron Waters, Chris Pither, Ant Pedersen, Andre Heimgartner and Tony D’Alberto.

Owen and D’Alberto will act as co-drivers for Heimgartner and Josh Kean respectively in the Dunlop Series race. It’s the first time in Dunlop Series history that a pit stop and co-drivers have been part of the race format.

ormer Dunlop Series winners Steve Owen and Tony D’Alberto are set to spice up the second-tier V8 Supercars class as co-drivers

for the all new 250km Bathurst enduro.Ford Performance Racing Pirtek Enduro

Cup co-driver Owen is slated to share the #26 MW Motorsport Ford with Andre Heimgartner in the Saturday encounter.

Owen, who won the Dunlop Series in 2008 and 2010, drove for MW Motorsport last season, winning both races at Bathurst.

In addition to Dunlop Series duties, Heimgartner will tackle his first Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 this year, driving for Super Black Racing.

“It’ll help keep Andre match-fit for the 1000 and obviously to have Steve on call as a back-up driver, you can’t get any better than that,” MWM team owner Matthew White told Speedcafe.com.

“He’s familiar with our cars and is racing an FPR again this year so it’s a really good fit for everyone.”

Walkinshaw Racing Enduro Cup co-driver D’Alberto meanwhile joins first-year Dunlop driver Josh Kean for the 250km race.

D’Alberto has been helping Kean throughout the season as the 21-year-old South Australian adapts to the class in an ex-Walkinshaw Holden.

Brothers Aaren Rusell and Drew Russell are also scheduled to team-up for the race aboard their family team’s Ford Falcon FG.

The remainder of the 28 car field have entered without a co-driver, although may nominate one as late as the Thursday of the race meeting.

Under the race’s rules, the primary driver must qualify the car and complete at least 12 laps in the race.

According to White, more co-drivers will likely be seen next year when teams have longer to prepare for the event.

The two-driver format was not confirmed by V8 Supercars until June 30, having followed the category’s decision against allowing Dunlop Series entries to fill-out the grid for the main race.

“It all comes down to business models and commitments for a lot of guys,” said White.

“It came about fairly late this year when most teams and drivers already had their deals done.”

White has run Heimgartner and Morgan Haber throughout the 2014 season, but is currently without any drivers for his team’s third entry, most recently driven by Tim Blanchard at Queensland Raceway.

Among Bathurst’s entries are V8 Ute Racing Series winner Ryal Harris, who joins the

he identity of the Porsche Carrera Cup Australia champion will become a whole lot clearer following the penultimate

round at the fabled Mount Panorama this weekend.

Following an action packed Sandown meeting dominated by Michael Patrizi, three drivers have emerged as contenders for the 2014 crown.

The Holden Racing Team V8 Supercar co-driver Warren Luff leads the championship standings with a six point advantage over Steven Richards, who will also be on V8 Supercars duties as partner to Red Bull Racing’s Craig Lowndes.

Hovering just 26 points adrift of the pair is reigning champion Craig Baird, who has hauled himself into the title battle over the last two meetings.

With just six races of the season remaining, championship points are becoming increasingly more valuable as the fight for the title intensifies.

Judging by the form book Baird will be difficult to beat this weekend having claimed four race wins from the last six Carrera Cup races at the mountain.

However, Luff has proved he is no slouch at the 6.2km circuit after taking a win and two second place finishes this time last year.

The championship is set to unveil arguably its strongest grid with the addition of former Carrera Cup race winner David Russell.

The two-time race winner has 79 Carrera Cup starts under his belt and will deputise for Roger Lago in the #23 JBS backed car.

Russell, like Baird, Luff and Richards, will also feature in the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 as he partners Rick Kelly in the Jack Daniel’s Nissan Altima.

“I jumped at the opportunity thanks to both Roger Lago and Nissan Motorsport who have been good enough to let me take this offer up,” Russell told Speedcafe.com.

“Its great to get the extra track time at Bathurst.

“I raced in the Australian GT Championship at Sandown so juggling racing commitments at Mount Panorama shouldn’t be an issue.

“I would love to get back on the Porsche Carrera Cup grid again in the future. It’s a really competitive series and great value for my sponsors.”

avid Sieders admits he is in for a tough battle against the season’s star performer, Kris Walton, heading into the Bathurst round

of the V8 Ute Racing Series.Sieders is searching for consecutive

Bathurst round wins, but concedes that Walton’s form is cause for concern, with the latter sitting on 623 points to Sieders’ 584.

The enviable record of having clinched podium positions every year he has raced at the mountain track since 2010 will be tough for Sieders to keep intact.

Sieders managed to take the lead in the series following his victory at Bathurst last year although repeating that will rely on Walton having a rare below par round.

“It would be ideal if we could do that, but the way Kris has shattered his own records at his bad tracks, he is on fire,” Sieders said.

“If we do what we’ve done in the past and get no worse than second, then hopefully he might falter sometime and we might be able to grab the lead.”

Nathan Pretty, third in points on 506, dropped from the points lead at Bathurst last year but is hoping his 100th start next week will be cause for celebration.

“I didn’t realise I had done so many Ute races. To celebrate at Bathurst will be awesome,” Pretty said.

“I’ve raced there many times over the years and let’s hope I can come away with a win.”

Two-time V8 Ute series winner Ryal Harris moved up the leaderboard after a strong performance at Sandown when he claiming the round win.

Harris is fifth, one place behind Jesse Dixon, as he looks forward to a crammed weekend after being confirmed in the Matt Stone Racing Falcon for the Dunlop Development Series 250.
