Most Holy Trinity

"God so loved the world that he gave his only Son." We are used to this profound idea, so used to it that we often glaze over the incredible

reality: God the Father has a Son who became man and dwelt among us! Too often we blithely make the sign of the cross in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, without realizing what a

radical theology we are announcing. Only Christianity proclaims a triune God. Only Christianity professes

that we have one God in three divine persons. Only Christianity declares that the very nature of God is to be relational and literally "personal." Why does this matter? Because we are made in God's

image, as the opening chapters of Genesis tell us. We, therefore, are made in the image of this Trinitarian God who is love. We are built to

be like this God! Just as God the Father loves God the Son and God the Holy Spirit, we too are called to love one another. In fact, we are not fulfilling our nature and design when we don't. And just as God loved

the world (that is, us!) so too we are called to love him in return. We don't have to embrace this image in which we were made, of course. God gave us freedom so that our love can be real, but this

means our choices really matter. We can decide not to reflect God's interpersonal love in the world. We can opt not to return the love that

God pours out to each of us. But this can only lead to disappointment in the end. After all, God sent his Son so that "everyone who believes in

him might not perish but might have eternal life." Ultimately, this means spending eternity in the Trinitarian embrace of love.

So why not start now?

PLEASE REMEMBER THEM

Please pray for the priests and deacons who have served the Diocese of Gary so faithfully and whose anniversaries of death are this week:

MOST HOLY TRINITY “I didn’t need to understand the hypostatic unity of the Trinity; I just needed to turn my life over to whoever came up with redwood trees.” ~Anne Lamott

I remember joking when I asked the person who was the diocesan vocation director when I was ordained if he would do the homily for my First Mass the day after my ordination. Our vocation director was also the pastor of my home parish. When he told me he was honored that I had asked him, I joked, “I’m just trying to delay having to preach about the Holy Trinity for another year” because my First Mass was on Trinity Sunday.

That is a joke that goes around, in one way, shape, or form among priests. We always joke about wanting to get out of preaching about the Trinity because it is too incredibly complex to consider.

There is a story that St. Augustine was walking on the beach contemplating the mystery of the Trinity. He saw a boy on the shore who had dug a hole in the sand and was going out to the sea again and again and bringing some water to pour into the hole. St. Augustine asked him, “What are you doing?” The boy replied, “I’m going to pour the entire ocean into this hole.” “That is impossible, the whole ocean will not fit in the hole you have made” said St. Augustine. To that, the boy replied, “And you cannot fit the Trinity in your tiny little brain.” At which point, the boy vanished and St. Augustine realized that he had been talking to an angel.

That may or may not be true. What is true, however, is that we will never be able to understand the Trinity totally. We will not come close to understanding it until we are standing in the presence of God. And at that point, it will not matter anymore because we will be with the Lord and will know Him intimately.

The poet, Anne Lamott, shows a lot of wisdom in stating, somewhat tongue in cheek, that truly understanding the Trinity is not as important as merely discovering our creator. There are too many times in our lives where we “overthink” our faith. We search and ponder and discuss and argue and debate. It does not get us anywhere, except, perhaps, to raise our blood pressure.

Do not let the struggle to understand God get in the way of your relationship with God. We will never know Him completely here on this earth so it would be better simply to recognize His presence and respond to it when we see it.

We may never totally understand Father, Son, and Spirit; however, we can come to see Him in our lives. After all, God is all around us.

FAITH ACTION: Clear a moderate amount of time in your schedule to sit quietly today. As you do so, ask God to give you a deeper appreciation of the Trinity and its meaning to your life.

OUR PASTORAL COUNCIL MEMBERS Last Sunday, at the 10:00 a.m. Mass on Pentecost, we asked the Holy Spirit to choose four members of our parish family to sit on the Parish Pastoral Council for three years. Thank you to all who went through the discernment process and who submitted their names for selection. May God reward you for your generous spirit. Congratulations to the new Pastoral Council members: Tom Alexander, Diane DeSoto, Jim Kaspar, and Tim Jevyak. Many thanks, as well, to the four members whose three year terms have ended. I truly appreciate all that you have done for me and for the parish. Thank you for your service, Joe Dubczak, Jim Landowski, Joe O’Brien, and Cindy Thompson. I have no doubt that we will be seeing a lot of you in other areas of the parish. You are extremely dedicated individuals. A special thank you to Joe Dubczak who acted as the Chairperson of the Pastoral Council this past year. Prayers for Nancy Klawitter as she steps in to become the new Chairperson of the Pastoral Council. Our parish is a wonderful example in the Diocese of Gary and it is due to the participation of so many talented parishioners. Let us all keep up the good work!
