Arup unites a global network of inventive and highly skilled building engineers and design specialists. Together, we are best known for helping to shape ambitious buildings.

While our most recognisable work is in complex, ground-breaking structures, it is better building performance that drives us.

Our integrated design teams create highly efficient buildings that operate on lighter costs and fewer resources with high-performance façades and systems. We help occupants connect, communicate and collaborate by embedding technology in buildings, and we help keep them safe with advanced approaches to security, fire, seismic, wind and lift systems design.

Behind the better performance of our building designs, lies Arup’s sophisticated approach to building information modelling (BIM), building physics and fluid dynamics.

With world-class expertise – creative and technical – we help to realise buildings that are better because they are more useful and attractive to the people who own and inhabit them, more sympathetic to their context and more commercially sustainable.

Arup has more than 70 years of experience in delivering the most challenging and iconic building structures worldwide. Our structural engineers optimise and combine loads (gravity, wind, seismic), materials and geometry to produce elegant, cost effective and buildable solutions that satisfy our client’s needs and exceed their expectations.

Arup has advanced the use of 3D building modelling to design and test structural solutions virtually. This helps engineers, architects and clients see how all components of a design work together. Seeing that, we can optimise structural efficiency and also overlay the critical factors of cost and time to understand the implications of choices for project viability and sustainability.

To stay connected to today’s evolving challenges, our structural engineers work closely with clients and collaborators and stay up to date with industry issues so that they can innovate in response to real-world challenges and constraints.

We design and implement efficient, effective and elegant systems for heating, cooling, lighting and all the other systems a building needs, and use these systems to create stimulating, productive environments.

Many of our building services engineers have worked around the world during their careers at Arup, forging teams in our offices into a connected community of expertise. Our networks ensure that, wherever in the world they are, our clients always benefit from the latest thinking.

With a reputation for innovative design and technical solutions, we’re continuing to focus on effective, efficient designs. Adopting building information modelling (BIM) for all projects will enable us to deliver our projects even more effectively.

Façades and building envelopes – which form the outer skins of buildings – are not only expressing the project image and creative intent but also influencing significantly the building’s embodied energy and operational energy consumption. A thoughtfully designed skin can make a building work more effectively for its owners, occupants and environment.

Arup’s approach is based on ingenuity: everything we do, from concept design to implementation and renovation, is design-led and underpinned by technical rigour such as advanced 3D modelling and simulations. We work with building owners and architects to develop façades that provide comfortable, productive internal environments. We also collaborate with contractors and manufacturers to develop new façade technologies and products.

To make buildings sustainable, we design for better performance from every angle, creating buildings that are efficient with resources, affordable to build and operate, delightful to inhabit and appropriate to their context.

A strong tradition of research and the desire to find innovative methods has led Arup to develop a number of unique design and assessment tools such as the Sustainable Project Appraisal Routine (SPeARTM), and lifecycle-based carbon and resource modelling.

We are familiar with a wide range of green building rating systems including LEED®, BREEAM and WELL, and are experienced in helping clients gain the required regional accreditations for new and existing buildings.

As an acknowledged leader in geotechnics, Arup is often asked to push the essential skill and science of designing and building structures in the ground. Wherever difficult ground conditions, sensitive environments or ambitious projects present geotechnical challenges, Arup provides robust and advanced solutions that save clients wasted time and money by identifying the best planning, design, construction and maintenance choices from the outset.

Working with multidisciplinary experts across the firm, our geotechnical engineers have a positive impact on the world’s environment. Whether designing heating systems that use ground energy or reusing existing foundations, Arup is committed to the continued development of new technologies to meet the goal of a sustainable environment.

Arup designs bridges across the world, from major infrastructure projects carrying roads and railways that link countries, to inspiring foot bridges that invite pedestrians to cross them.

We have worked in all project phases from planning through design to construction and beyond. We also administer contracts and supervise construction, check designs by others, inspect and assess existing bridges and prepare schemes for strengthening and restoration.

Our ability to integrate expertise in areas such as highways, rails, materials, maritime, aerodynamics, seismic and geotechnics ensures we offer a seamless design and unrivalled expertise to clients that include governments, public authorities, highway and railway owners and contractors.

Arup’s tunnel design services extend from inception to operation, combining engineering skills with expertise in safety and ventilation, materials technology and lifecycle cost analysis. This combination of specialisms enables us to produce innovative answers to some of the world’s largest and most complex tunnelling projects.

We develop cost-effective and sustainable strategies for moving people, freight, and the power and water utilities needed to keep modern and developing societies functioning. As increasing pressure is placed on infrastructure systems, tunnels provide vital connections between locations and communities whilst minimising the impact on the surface environment. Arup is at the forefront of developing larger and more complex underground spaces in response to this demand.

Planning

Good planning is at the heart of regenerating cities, towns and rural areas to establish long-term social, economic and environmental sustainability.

Integrated urbanism, Arup’s approach to planning, acknowledges the interdependence of urban systems and communities as well as the effects of global issues, such as climate change resilience, on the future of our cities.

Our planning proposals are built on our insight into the way places influence wellbeing, work and lifestyle, as well as technical understanding of interconnected systems such as transport, energy, waste and information. We test and refine our proposals with tools and analysis that join up the quantifiable and subjective aspects of spatial, social, environmental and economic context.

Arup’s track record lends confidence to investment in urban development – we deliver plans that meet regulatory approval, and go on to successful implementation. Key to our success is collaboration with partners and stakeholders, which aids progression from design to delivery.Image

Arup’s considerable experience in designing, realising and evaluating development worldwide means that we know first-hand how economic planning influences success for a project and the community it serves. We help clients understand the economic potential or impact of proposals as well as the relevant policy, and to frame their strategies in response to both.

We draw on Arup’s practical experience of working with developers, government authorities and third-party stakeholders to help clients understand economic benefit from diverse perspectives.

Our economists also work alongside town planners, planning policy experts, transport planners, urban designers, architects, ecologists and infrastructure designers to provide the joined-up advice that makes complex projects work in practice.
