Broadly the people may be divided into three cultural
groups on the basis of their socio-religious affinities.
Culture in Arunachal Pradesh
Culture in Arunachal Pradesh
The Monpas and Sherdukpens of Tawang and West Kameng districts follow the lamaistic
tradition of Mahayana Buddhism
Culture in Arunachal PradeshThe second group of the people are
Adis, Akas, Apatanis, Bangnis, Nishis, Mishmis, Mijis, Thongsas etc., who worship Sun and Moon
God namely, Donyi-Polo and Abo-Tani, the original ancestors for most
of these local communities
Culture in Arunachal PradeshThe third group comprises Noctes and
Wanchos, adjoining Nagaland in the Tirap District. These are hardy people
known for their strictly structured village society in which hereditary village chief
still plays a vital role. They owe allegiance to some of the Satras of
Assam and are Vaishnavaits by faith
The locals communities of Arunachal Pradesh have highly ordered and organised system of functioning in
their villages. All matters relating to the community as a whole are decided at the village level. The socio-
administrative structure of the society, as evolved over a period of centuries, recognises democratic partition right
down to the level of villages. The traditional Village Panchayat of an Adi Village is
locally, known as 'Kebang' which is judicio-administrative body, consisting of mature and influential elders, Kebang looks after the administration of justice in
the society by setting all matters of dispute.Similar such self-governing institution exist among other
local communities. They are variously called as Jong among the Sherdukpens, Mel among the Akas, Buliang
among the Apaptanis and so on.

society

Meghalaya – its impact on Arunachal Pradesh
The need for concerted effortThere is a need for a concerted resistance by all
nationalist forces to stop this onslaught by the missionaries. All well-meaning people and various service organisations inside and outside Arunachal
should raise their voice against this devious method of conversion adopted by Christian organisations. They should also take very effective steps to counter their
moves by making aware more local Arunachali people the danger they are facing and by bringing them closer to each other and unify them through various activities. Towards this end, the Kendra has instituted, long. term
activities which it proposes to expand to meet the increased challenge from anti-national forces.
