How are Aruba Mobility-defined networks different? All of these new capabilities are unique to Aruba, based on a unique architectural approach to mobility:

Mobility-defined Networks use Real-time state/context about the user, the device, apps, and location (specific to Aruba)Aruba uses that information to auto-program network paths (unique to Aruba), while other products require IT to manually configure VLAN updates, IP config updates, etc.

802.11ac is ready for prime timetoday.

It is twice as fast as Ethernet at 120 feet and enables you to eliminate wires and slash costs.

With the Wi-Fi Alliance certifying 802.11ac devices since June of this year, there are already over 200 products certified(201 clients on 1/28/2014; 303 total on 1/28/2014). In fact there have been over 40 million 802.11ac Galaxy S4 smartphones shipped alone.

We have been able to optimize power utilization and even on legacy 802.3af PoE the APs are able to run the 802.11ac radio with full performance. One should still look towards higher power 802.3at but it isnt mandatory to move to it before your 802.11ac migration.

Arubas 802.11ac capable AP220 series Access Points are the first on the market with true gigagit support. With total aggregate capacity of 1.75Gbps, which is well over 1 gigabit, Arubas APs are outfitted with dual GigE ports for link aggregation. In addition, the 220 series can be operated with standard 802.3af PoE which is supported by most access layer switches. This means customers can extend the life of their existing wired infrastructure while upgrading to the latest mobility solution without having to make capital investments for wired infrastructure upgrades.

Whats most unique about the AP220 is the ability to exceed 802.11n speeds in the 2.4GHz band. Arubas 802.11ac AP supports up to 600Mbps in 2.4 band which is an increase of 150Mbps when used with Broadcom based devices like Apple macbooks, iphones and ipads as well as Samsung galaxy phones.

When it comes to performance, there is no match to Arubas ClientMatch technology. As you know, there are a variety of different client devices out there running on different operating system, different driver versions, even different capabilities like 802.11 a or b or g or n as well as 11ac. Not all these devices are created equal and just one poorly behaving client can bring down the performance of the whole network. The fundamental issue that on a Wi-Fi network the client device is in control. They make their own decisions on which AP to connect to, how long to stay connected to that AP and when to let go leading to the well known sticky client problem. Problem with this approach is that the Client devices have a narrow view of the network and are generally making decisions that may not be in the best interests of the overall network. ClientMatch fixes this by enabling the Wi-Fi infrastructure to make decisions on behalf of the client while keep a global network wide view in mind.

If you are talking on your cell phone while driving down the road, you are probably going through several different cell towers. As you pass the towers, your active call and your devices is being actively steered by the cell company to the best cell tower for your device. Similarly, ClientMatch enables the infrastructure to steer the devices to the best possible AP based on several different factors like device type, location of the device, signal to noise ratio in the vicinity of the device as well the load on the Access Point. You can see this in action on the animated slide here where the iPad is being steered to another AP. With ClientMatch, the goal is to improve the quality of every single connection which effectively boosts overall network performance providing users with a superior user experience.

As you see on this slide, Aruba has already been granted a patent on this technology making it unique and highly differentiated. Without ClientMatch, an 802.11ac network will operate no different than a 802.11n network and users will not experience much performance gains.

Just as the network and devices perform better with Arubas ClientMatch technology, users of real-time applications like Microsoft Lync experience higher levels of satisfaction on an Aruba wireless LAN. Because ClientMatch ensures devices are always connected to the best AP, the applications on those clients automatically benefit too. But Aruba has taken the user experience to a higher level with tight integration with the new Microsoft Lync Diagnostics API. Now Aruba can not only identify which streams of Lync traffic are voice or video collaboration or desktop sharing, but also provide the right levels of priority to those streams depending on the needs of the business. For example voice and video traffic get higher priority than everything else on the network while chat and file share get deprioritized; all from the same user and same device. This is unique because with the API integration, there is no way to accurately identify one stream of traffic from another. Network engineering is also secure and simpler with this integration. It is not longer required to open a series of network ports for Lync traffic. The Lync server is able to dynamically open ports as needed for each device and user.

The integration allows Aruba to implement bandwidth-based and call-count based CAC. This means that oversubscription can be proactively prevented while enabling Higher data throughput with fewer dropped calls.

Additionally, the API integration gives network admins the ability to visualize, monitor and troubleshoot telecom traffic like never before. If a user complaints about poor call quality, admin can immediately drill down to the specific call from the specific user to analyze the issue as we show on the next slide.

There are two architectures available today, controllers and controllerless. Controllerless architectures aim to recreate the features and functionality of the controller based architecture using either the AP only or an AP and a software management platform. Both platforms are building networks larger than a single AP, that share the same SSID and allow users and administrators a broad range of services. Some vendors do only one architecture or the other, some do both. Some vendors also offer autonomous APs. We also differentiate controllerless APs from autonomous APs like older Cisco or HP models, Linksys, d-link. The two architectures really tend to lend themselves to particular deployments.

For larger campuses, such as a university or large enterprise, controllers tend to make the most sense. They are able to handle massive amounts of traffic and huge numbers of devices while reducing the roaming re-authentication load. A site with complex network topologies, such as multiple VLANs, benefits from the centralization of the network design.

On smaller sites or campuses, such as retail or primary schools, controllerless deployments make sense. These independent entities dont generally have the complex network requirements and costs need to be reduced.
