Easter is a religious holiday, but most of us also cele-

brate Easter in the “greeting card” way—with the Easter

Bunny and chocolate eggs. Young children gather to color

Pysanky, Cont. from P. 1

Coloring hard boiled eggs for Easter goes

farther back than coloring kits and people

dressed up as giant rabbits in the mall. Color-

ing Easter eggs is a long-lasting holiday tradi-

tion for all religions that celebrate this day.

Pysanky are Ukrainian Easter eggs equivalent

to the American Easter egg, but our dinky

eggs with our names written on them with the

use of a clear crayon as a resist does not even

begin to compare to these beautiful pieces of

art.

Pysanky are written on with beeswax (a

wax resist method) to create complex Ukrain-

ian folk designs. This style pre-dates Christi-

anity. Ancient Ukrainians worshiped a sun

god, Dazhboh, and decorated the eggs in

honor of the sun god giving the earth life in

the springtime. Birds were Dazhboh’s chosen

creation, so decorating an egg in his honor

also honored the life that the egg represented.

Humans could not catch the birds because of

their magical connection to Dazhboh, so they

started to collect the eggs that represent life

and rebirth and quickly became known as

magical objects. Ukrainian immigrants

brought the Pysanky decorating method to

North and South America, which influenced

the coloring egg tradition we continue today.

Women would set aside perfectly shaped,

smooth eggs during the week of Lent for the

tradition of decorating the eggs pre-Easter.

The eggs were the first-laid eggs of a young

hen and had to be fertilized by a rooster. The

myth behind the eggs was that if an unfertil-

ized egg were used, there would be no fertility

in the home.

The dyes used were made from different

natural items found in the Ukrainian environ-

ment. The recipes for the dyes were passed

down from mother to daughter and were kept

a secret.

ARTPOURRI—NEWS Acquisition Announced—The Frances Lehman Loeb Art

Center at Vassar College, Poughkeepsie, NY, has an-

nounced the acquisition of a rare medieval 13th century Limoges Eucharistic dove. Made of parcel-gilt and engraved copper, it features champlevé enamel decora-tion. Its purpose was to hang above the altar, both sug-gesting the dove of the Holy Spirit and housing the con-secrated wafer symbolic of the body of Christ in the

Catholic Mass in a small compartment. Veterans Honored—President George W. Brush took up painting upon retirement and The Crown Publishing Group has now published Portraits of Courage—A Com-mander in Chief’s Tribute to America’s Warriors. This New York Times #1 Best Seller is a vibrant collection of

oil paintings and stories of 66 veterans whom Pres. Bush has come to know personally. Proceeds will go to the Bush Presidential Center in Dallas, where an exhibition of the same name will be on view thru Oct. 1. Ground Broken—The Philadelphia Museum of Art has broken ground to kick off construction on the Core Pro-

ject of their Facilities Master Plan. This major renovation

designed by Frank Gehry is scheduled for completion in 2020 and will add 23,000 sq. ft of new galleries for American and contemporary art. Prize Winner on Exhibition—An exhibition of new works by artist Anicka Yi, 11th winner of the Hugo Boss Prize, will be on view at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, NY, from April 21 to July 5. This exhibition

presents a densely layered examination of the intersect-ing biological, social, political and technological systems that define our lives. Award Received—The Olana State Historic Site, home of Hudson River School painter Frederic Edwin Church, has received an Award of Merit from the American Soci-

ety of Landscape Architects. The ASLA-NY 2017 Design Award was given for Olana’s Strategic Landscape Design Plan. Visit olana.org for tour info and more.

Reno Underway—At the National Portrait Gallery, there’s a temporary “America’s Presidents” installation in the west gallery on the second floor while the permanent exhibition space is upgraded. Highlights include Hind-

sight is Always 20/20 by artist Luke DuBois, which re-flects the lexicon and rhetoric of presidents and their time. And on view for the first time is Chuck Close’s portrait of former President Barack Obama. This exhibit closes on Sept. 4, with the permanent exhibition reopen-ing in its usual space on Sept. 22. Partnership Announced—The New Museum (NY) and

Kvadrat have announced a new three-year initiative that will support selected emerging artists in the production of new work. This will support the Museum’s mission to present significant new works by a younger generation of artists and result in three solo exhibitions at the Museum over three years.

Jazz Masters Celebrated—The NEA will celebrate the

2017 NEA Jazz Masters, recipients of the nation’s highest honor in jazz, during Jazz Appreciation Month (April). A concert will take place on April 3 at 7:30 pm at the Ken-nedy Center Concert Hall in Washington, DC, and streamed live, as well as broadcast live. Masters include Dee Dee Bridgewater, Ira Gitler, Dave Holland, Dick

Hyman and Dr. Lonnie Smith. See more info at www.arts.gov.

Pysanky, Cont. from P. 3 Pysanky were made at night while the children

were asleep so they would wake to magically deco-

rated eggs on Easter morning. The designs used were

also passed down from mother to daughter to keep

every piece of the tradition a magical secret.

The women would melt beeswax in a small bowl

and dip a stylus into the bowl to apply hot wax to the

egg by writing on it and creating the uniquely beauti-

ful designs. Then the egg would be dyed yellow,

more wax would be applied and then multiple differ-

ent colors proceeded the yellow. Every color se-

quence would start light-to-dark to create the colorful

wax designs. The final color, which would be the

darkest, would be wiped off by briefly dipping the egg

into boiling water.

Each color used on the eggs was significant and

perfectly planned The color red, for example, is the

oldest symbolic color for Ukrainian beliefs. It repre-

sents life and blood and is usually used for heavenly

symbols, The designs on the eggs are also symbolic.

Pre-Christian era, the designs made the eggs magical

by warding off evil spirits, banishing winter and

promising a good harvest. As years went by, the spe-

cific symbols for each design fell by the wayside and

they became more magical and decorative than any-

thing else. Some families would create their own

symbolism behind their specific family designs. A

few different designs have persisted, though, like the

geometric designs or the eternity bands. The geomet-

ric designs symbolize religious and spiritual beliefs,

while eternity bands symbolize immortality and

waves that create a surplus of crops.

Although natural dyes can be made, most of us

buy a kit that contains tablet dyes that fizz in vinegar,

and we sit as a family to color Easter eggs. The dyes

are pre-made for us, the box has egg holders and the

eggs are bought from the store. The eggs are usually

either one color, attempted tie-dye or covered in stick-

ers—not to say that our form of Easter eggs can’t be a

fun and creative family tradition. But, for most, it’s

just a time to sit together as a family in preparation for

a holiday. The traditional pysanky were carefully

thought out, gently put together and were meaningful

to the families creating them. Though today people

making these eggs probably gather their resources in a

way similar to us, these are still magical designs that

are passed from one generation to another, which in

itself is a beautiful thing.

Google “pysanky+images” to see examples of

these intricate and colorful Easter eggs.
