Jane Atwill, Radio Plymouth www.radioplymouth.com

Jane is the News Editor at Radio Plymouth and has run the news operation there virtually since the station launched in 2010. Graduating from Plymouth University with an English Literature degree in 2007, Jane briefly freelanced at BBC Radio Devon, worked at Exeter FM (now Radio Exe) and now works at Radio Plymouth. Radio Plymouth is a small station, which is now the only one based in Plymouth providing news exclusively for Plymouth.

Jane’s presentation will look at how she gained work experience and ultimately work in radio. She will look at the opportunities out there and offer advice when it comes to approaching people, being on a placement and being interviewed. Jane will also look at the type of experience you can gain while at university.

Welcome to “Exploring your future” which is a collaboration between the Faculty of Arts and the Careers, Placements & Employability Service of Plymouth University. We are looking forward to a stunning day of talks, workshops, interactive sessions and networking opportunities with industry professionals, which will allow our students to explore the broad range of options available to them after graduation. There will be sessions for students from all areas of the Faculty of Arts, including: Architecture, Arts, Built Environment, Design, Humanities, Media and Performing Arts.

We are grateful that so many prominent professionals from across the Arts will be working with us today to highlight their experiences for the benefit of our students. Our degree programmes are designed to prepare students for the challenges ahead, however nothing can replace first-hand accounts of navigating the workplace and building a career, so we look forward to hearing from our all our special guests, I am confident that we will all be both inspired and informed!

Hannah Kelly is a previous English graduate from the University of Plymouth and her current role is Assistant Editor at F&W Media. F&W Media International LTD is the international arm of F+W Media, Inc. and home to the David & Charles imprint, bringing the very best in creative innovation and authoritative publishing to the illustrated non-fiction marketplace and a leader in the craft market. Hannah’s session will provide an introduction to F&W Media International: what they do, the books that they publish, and the various departments and roles within the company. There will also be general advice on how to get into publishing.

Rachael Lyons, A + E UK / SKY / History Channel www.history.co.uk

Rachael Lyons lives and works in London. She is Assistant Producer of Digital Media at the History Channel. From Pinewood Studios to porn documentaries, Rachael has worked in all areas of the media industry including Radio, TV, Film and Digital Media. In this session she will give an overview of her career path from the University of Plymouth to the History channel. Bring an open mind, lots of questions and be prepared to hear the good, the bad and the ugly!

Eleanor Butland, Formation Zone www.formationzone.co.uk

Eleanor studied Fine Art at Falmouth College of Arts and worked as a freelance artist for several years after graduating, before becoming involved in supporting artists and the creative industries. Her roles have included Arts Officer for two local authorities and providing business development support to creative practitioners in rural Devon. After being inspired by creative business incubators in Melbourne and Brisbane whilst travelling, Eleanor came to Plymouth University to set up our very own creative incubator Formation Zone in 2007. FZ is now recognised as one of the leading university incubators in the UK. Eleanor’s interactive workshop will take you through what it’s like to be at the early stage of starting a creative business and what you can do to increase your chances of success. So if you’re thinking of setting up your own business or working freelance then there will be lots of useful tips in this session. If perhaps you are a fine artist or creative practitioner that doesn’t fit into the commercial career route then we’ll also be looking at how to organise cooperative studio groups, set up artist studios and shared workspaces.

Grace Hailstone, Collections and Exhibitions Officer

Since graduating from Plymouth University in 2009 with a BA in Fine Art and Art History, Grace Hailstone has worked in the curatorial departments of Dulwich Picture Gallery, The Horniman Museum and Gardens and most recently Harewood House Trust. Prior to this, she studied for an MA in Paris Studies: History and Culture at the University of London Institute in Paris in 2010. Exhibition projects include the Cultural Olympiad exhibition, The Body Adorned at the Horniman Museums and Gardens, an exhibition of Fabergé in collaboration with the Royal Collection at Harewood and an upcoming exhibition of new lithographs by Clare Woods. This session will discuss working in museums and heritage organisations and having worked in various exhibition roles, Grace will talk about her experiences, the demands of the job, how to get there and what to expect in this field of work.

Manuel Mindreau, Sotheby’s Institute of Art http://www.sothebysinstitute.com

Manuel Mindreau studied an MA in Contemporary Art at the University of Manchester/Sotheby’s Institute. He is now currently engaged as Student Recruitment Manager for Europe at Sotheby’s Institute in London, having previously worked as Senior Sales Consultant for ARTNET UK, Gallery Manager for Carpenters’ Workshop Gallery (London) and in investment banking for Citibank. Manuel’s presentation will focus on the recent growth of the global art market, the various careers paths available today and how Sotheby’s Institute of Art postgraduate programmes can help those interested in pursuing a successful career in this field. Since 1969 Sotheby’s Institute (with campuses in London and New York) has been offering courses in Art Business, Contemporary Art, Fine & Decorative Arts, Photography, Contemporary Design and East Asian Art. Our graduates usually assume positions as experts in commercial galleries, art fairs, auction houses, museums, foundations, private collections or as consultants in art investment, art law and art insurance.

James Mullinger, GQ Magazine www.jamesmullinger.com

James Mullinger has been the Photo Director of GQ Magazine for over twelve years. During this time he has commissioned and worked with photographers such as Terry Richardson, Lord Snowdon, Mario Sorrenti, Simon Emmett, David Bailey, Jill Greenberg, Sam Taylor-Wood, Vincent Peters and Peter Lindbergh shooting the likes of Kylie Minogue, Sienna Miller, David Beckham, numerous supermodels, David Walliams, David Haye, Rio Ferdinand, James Corden, Penelope Cruz, Simon Pegg, Michael McIntyre, Ricky Gervais and many more. He will discuss the state of the magazine industry, explain how he got his foot in the door, how to get commissioned, the importance of new digital media and what GQ look for in a photographer.

Chris Slade, Number1media www.n1m.co.uk

Christopher Slade has spent 30 years in the broadcast and digital media industries. He has worked as a reporter/presenter/producer in BBC Local Radio, BBC Radio 4 and was the nightly presenter of the BBC South West’s “Spotlight”. In 1987 he co-founded Twofour, now one of the UK’s largest media groups. As well as broadcast work, he has helped companies and organisations develop communications platforms and campaigns. As Executive Producer for online content, he has worked recently with Tom Daley, Channel 4’s Paralympic Coverage, Audi, Volkswagen and Heineken. He has produced content for major international conferences and has overseen the making of truly engaging low-cost video using small digital cameras. He has developed intranets and increased traffic to external websites, co-ordinating online, video, social media and live events. Christopher’s talk will look at how to try your best at getting a career in digital media including broadcast, non-broadcast, communications, online and journalism. Christopher started out making tea and has some specific tips about getting on that elusive media career ladder - and how to be a little more scientific about your approach than the speaker’s!

Julian Evans & Glen Crust: “Imagine and Realise your Graduate Self”

This workshop invites participants to imagine their graduate selves and move towards realising this identity and lifestyle. Julian Evans is a composer, performer, lecturer, community choir director and performance coach and Glen Crust is a careers adviser working at the University.

Miranda Spicer, Associate Lecturer

With over 25 years in mainstream publishing, Miranda has commercial business experience. Formerly Editorial Director at David & Charles (FW Media), she has worked for a variety of book and magazine publishers including HarperCollins, Dorling Kindersley, Element, BBC Magazines. Her career spans editorial, commissioning, production, training and senior management. She has run her own independent publishing company. She was the first External Examiner for Bath Spa University’s Publishing FdA. She runs one-off workshops in creative copywriting and advises on careers in publishing. As a career, publishing is as popular as ever. Book, magazines and journals are still published conventionally and across a variety of platforms. Published product needs creative input from authors, designers, editors, photographers. This session will cover an overview of jobs in the publishing industry and what they entail.

Rob and Clare, both graduates of Plymouth are professional illustrators living and working in Bristol. They will be talking about working in illustration and commercial art in the years post university. Through their diverse projects and different approaches to illustration, they will show some of the avenues for work, what to do and not to do, what working in a design studio is like, how to sell your work, how not to sell your soul, and how to (hopefully) be a happy illustrator.

Richard is the Director of CORE Business Design and Creative Innovation Centre CIC providing business growth, development and strategic innovation training for organizations and individuals across the South West. Richard has 30 years practice, both nationally and internationally, in supporting businesses and individuals to maximize their performance by using creative processes within their personal or business strategies. Richard is a Fellow of the University of Plymouth, for Creative Enterprise and is also a practicing sculptor and lighting designer. Richard’s talk will explore maximizing creativity in your Business.

Kristian Sharpe, Freelance Musician/Producer

Kristian has worked within the music industry as a musician, sound engineer, programmer and producer in many recording studios around the country. Kristian has been performing on the live scene for more than twenty years and has experienced the industry from several perspectives. Also an experienced workshop leader / teacher and University Visiting Lecturer, Kristian combines real life experience and up-to-date industry insight to inspire and provide strategies for aspiring musicians and industry creatives. Kristian’s session is an inspiring careers and opportunities seminar that aims to share and discuss the constantly changing inroads of the music industry as a whole, to provide solutions and proven strategies for aspiring industry creatives, and to share, network and provide local industry awareness.

Sarah Chapman & Nadia Thondrayen, Peninsula Arts www.peninsula-arts.co.uk

Sarah is the Director at Peninsula Arts, Plymouth University and Nadia is the Gallery and Exhibitions Co-ordinator. The session will look at the role of arts Management and curating, providing an introduction to Peninsula Arts, looking at the personal experiences of working on exhibitions and finally talking about the Peninsula Arts Internship Scheme.

Nico Macdonald & Laura North, Media Futures www.mediafutures.org.uk

Media Futures brings together thinkers and practitioners in media to share their work and debate future trends in media technology innovation, consumer behaviour and media business models. Nico’s and Laura’s talk will focus on future trends in relation to design exploring the role of innovation and how we experience new products and services. Nico is also co-author of Big Potatoes: The London Manifesto for Innovation.

Oliver Blanchard is an award winning designer who has been recognised in both national and international design competitions. After graduating from Plymouth University in 2011 Oliver moved into a freelance role with Kevin McCloud’s housing company before taking on a full time contract as a designer with Dyson. He is now in the early stages of founding his own design company aiming to develop, manufacture and license his technology and products. Oliver’s session will look at moving from a final year 3D design student at Plymouth into international design competitions, working as a freelance designer, an in-house designer and the initial steps in starting out as a graduate entrepreneur. Oliver will also be available to talk to students about their work after his session.

Sebastian Cox, Sebastian Cox Furniture www.sebastiancox.co.uk

I design and make contemporary furniture, and my work is always carried out with a consideration for environmental sustainability. As a result my products are simple, functional, unobtrusive, lightweight, durable, and mostly made from wood – which I see as useful CO2. I have always had an interest in nature and conservation, and while studying at university I began to realise the wide role that design can play in shaping a more environmentally benign future. This quickly became embedded in my design ethos, and has shaped my work since. I developed and pushed my ideas and understanding of sustainable design during a master’s degree in which I looked specifically at using an abundant yet rarely used material, coppiced hazel, to make contemporary furniture. I will be talking about developing a collection of sustainable furniture that can be taken to market and how I went about disseminating my work and building my business.

Jane Porter, Film Production Manager

I currently work freelance managing artist film projects as well as for the past five years at Picture This, Bristol. Prior to this I studied fine art at degree and film at MA then worked as an artist for several years. I have also set up two temporary independent art spaces in Bristol and work as an advisor for Alias in advising artist groups. I will talk to students about working with film as an artist, go through the commissioning process, how to present their work and where to look for opportunities and places to build experience. I will also talk about funding their work. I will demonstrate some of these through talking about projects I have worked on. I will also be available to talk to anyone interested in setting up an independent gallery or project space.

Q&A PANELS

HERITAGE PANELThis session will explain the speakers’ routes into their professions and provide some guidance on a career in the heritage sector. Panel members include:

• Louisa Mann, Archives and Information Manager for Plymouth City Council’s Museums, Arts and Heritage Service: Louisa is a qualified Archivist and has been working in the archive sector for 10 years. She worked for West Glamorgan Archive Service, Worcestershire Record Office and Transport for London Historical Archives before moving to Plymouth in 2010. Her ambition is to get a new home for the Plymouth and West Devon Record Office.

• Stacey Dyer, Collections Development Manager for the South West Film & Television Archive: Stacey is a qualified Archivist, having worked for 5 years as the founding Archive Manager for a highly successful local photographic archive in Plymouth – The South West.

• Colette Hobbs, Archivist & Manager for South West Image Bank: Prior to her role as SWiB’s Archivist & Manager from December 2012, Colette’s work as Archive Outreach Officer meant that she has developed specialist expertise in the application of heritage based outreach strategies. Outreach involves making the collections accessible to a wider audience. She has been involved with producing presentations, workshops, open days, exhibitions, events, research, volunteer programmes and maintaining a design house for retail.

They will be identifying those areas that are most applicable to students, that are key to success and, in particular, the essential requirements they expect from Graduates from interview stage onwards. In addition an ex-student from Plymouth will give a talk on his experiences post academia. Jim Parkyn, Aardman Animations Ltd www.aardman.com

Jim has worked in Animation since 1998 after graduating in Animation from the University of Glamorgan. He joined Aardman in 2000 to work on their first full length animated Feature ‘Chicken Run’. He has a long list of credits including; ‘Rex the Runt’, ‘Robbie and the Vikings’ (BBC Animation Unit), ‘Wallace and Gromit and the Curse of the Were Rabbit‘, ‘Creature Comforts’, ‘Creature Comforts USA’ and ‘Shaun the Sheep series 1&2’. During his time on’ Wallace and Gromit’ Jim worked on a number of puppets including Gromit, a long list of villagers and was a one of the team of Bunny Builders a great many rabbits. Since then he has led model making teams on a range of projects ‘Creature Comforts USA’, various commercials and short films and the latest series of ‘Shaun the Sheep’. Having recently finished work on Aardmans’ latest exciting ‘ Pirates’ Feature film he is leading a team on new ‘Shaun the Sheep’ projects. He shall talk about his job as a model maker and what that entails but also where that sits with in the studio, other jobs in animation that you may not think of and what goes in to making an animated episode/special.

Paula Orrell, Independent Curator

Paula is an independent curator working in the South West region and internationally. She studied fine art at Sheffield Hallam and then received an MA in Creative Curating from Goldsmiths College, London. Paula was employed as a lecturer and researcher at the London College of Fashion before coming to Plymouth in 2006 to take up the post of Curator at Plymouth Arts Centre. Over her 6 years there, she put the arts centre firmly on the cultural map as an important regional resource for the visual arts, collaborating on major national and international exhibitions and commissioning the most radical and significant artists. Her work is characterised by its strong commitment to building links between artists and local communities and developing a new audience for the art form. She was also instrumental in bringing the British Art Show 7 to Plymouth in 2011. Paula is now developing an independent practice as a curator that includes commissioning artists in the public realm, and writing about art. Paula’s session will discuss her work as a contemporary art curator, and how she began and developed a career in this field.
