Alston Koch storms the charts with the Murali Song Australian music star, Alston Koch who was born in Sri Lanka is storming the charts with a song dedi- cated to the world champion bowler, Muttiah Muralitharan. The Murali Song is doing well down un- der as well as the Asian Charts. It has been featured in three continents. Muttiah Muralitharan, Sri Lanka’s ace spin bowler overtook Australian Shane Warne’s record when Eng;and played Sri Lanka in a three test series on the island. Murali is now the world’s leading wicket taker - a historic record. He could well end up with 1000 wickets. Alston Koch has recorded the only official tribute personally en- dorsed by Muttiah Muralitharan. Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel, the national mo- bile services provider takes great pride in an- nouncing its partnership with world renowned fash- ion designer Dinesh Chandrasena to present his latest collection at his first ever fashion show in Sri Lanka. The show will be held on April 4 at the Galle Face Hotel, Co- lombo. The backing band for the evening will be Super Pink ‘n Purple. Clifford will also be doing many well loved duets with Mariazelle, who will be the guest artist. There will be a special sing along segment with the audience and Latin American dancers. Y oung artist Jehan Samith Silva recently held his first painting exhibition at the Gandhara Gallery. The paintings on display were done in oil and Acrylic. Silva who works full time as a merchandiser at a leading garment firm says that he was attracted to painting from his childhood and his first memories of drawing were when he used to draw cars featured in hit television shows. “I used to just draw them over and over again.” Jehan’s debut exhibition S rilal Miththapala, Char- tered Electrical Engineer turned hotelier is a serious wildlife and nature enthusiast with an affection for the majestic el- ephants, launched his maiden book the ‘Tranquil Footsteps’ – a story about the elephants at Udawalawe National Park, last week at the HNB Towers audito- rium. Tranquil Footsteps was written on the basis of an elephant family living in the Udawalawe Park, through the eyes of a she elephant that traces the life experience of the elephant herds in the park The book encompasses a wealth of information about el- ephants, wildlife and the Udawalawe National park in gen- eral. The author’s deep-rooted in- terest and love for wildlife and el- ephants are abundantly mani- fested through the matriarch’s story of her life. With a facile pen on wild life and in particular on elephants Miththapala has gathered all the details of the she elephant and her family during 1998- 2002 al- though he could not publish the book due to his numerous com- mitments in the leisure industry. The book features the experi- ence trials and tribulations of day- to-day life of the she elephant in the park with reminiscing her childhood, the death of her mother and the subsequent transition of the mantle of leadership on to her shoulders. Miththapala who had inspired him in conserving nature and wild life from his young days, Miththapala at the book launching ceremony retreated the importance of preserving the nature and wild life that not only gives a personal satisfaction but helps to build a close relationship with the elephants to put a halt to the human elephant con- flict in the country. Miththapala is a Chartered Elec- trical Engineer graduated from the University of Moratuwa and a Fel- low of the Institute of Electrical En- gineering London and had worked in Nova Scotia, Canada before tak- ing up in tourism. At present he is the Chief Executive Officer/ Direc- tor Serendib Leisure Management the management company of Hotel Sigiriya, Club Hotel Dolphin and Hotel Serendib Bentota. Miththapala has also under- taken a field research programme on the Mobility Patterns and Popu- lations Dynamics of Sreni Lankan Elephants in the Udawalawe National Park in 2002 under the sponsorship of US Fish and Wildlife Services. He got the opportunity to present his findings at The International Symposium on Human Elephant Relationship and Conflict held in September 2003.
