JOIN TODAY Become a member of Morris Arts. Enroll your school in our Arts Education Program online at www.morrisartseducation.com. Asa member, you will receive invitations to our Cultural Arts Workshops as well as our annual Arts Education Showcase.

SELECT A PROGRAMLook over our Program Guide or attend our annual Arts Education Showcase and select the program best suited for your gradesor events. We recommend that you consult with the principal and the teachers with classes attending the program for sugges-tions. Morris Arts’ education staff is also available for consultation to make suggestions based on your school’s interests.

IDENTIFY AVAILABLE DATES AND TIMESCheck the school’s master calendar and choose at least three open dates. Decide how many performances are needed. If youhave multiple performances on the same day, please allow 15 minutes between performances to allow for setup and to assemblethe next group of students.

SCHEDULE YOUR PROGRAMSGo to our website www.morrisartseducation.com to find artist contact information and contact the artist directly to book theshows you have selected. The artist will send you the necessary paperwork along with a study guide, technical requirements andpayment procedure for the program you have selected. Please submit any necessary district, insurance or hold harmless formsearly to the artists for timely processing.

CONFIRM DATESOnce a date has been selected and confirmed with the artist, make sure your performances are on the school’s master calendar.Our artists are in heavy demand and it may be difficult to reschedule them if a conflict develops.

PERFORMANCE PREPARATIONPrepare your students to view the performance with an introductory lesson from the study guide provided by the artist. Discussproper behavior and etiquette for viewing a live performance.

PERFORMANCE DAYPlan to meet the artist before the first performance to get acquainted and help them find the equipment, dressing and perform-ance area at your school. Make sure your students are in their seats and ready to view the performance at the starting time.

They show howto take ordinary ideas and make them extraordinarythrough creativity and structure. The dancers discusseveryday topics such as shapes, levels, pathways,numbers and sentences to show how these ideas canbecome a dance. CIRCUS AROUND THE WORLD WITH CIRCUS MINIMUSResidency led by a former Big Apple Circus instructorhas students study juggling, clowning, tumbling, part-ner acrobatics, human pyramid building, tight-wire andmuch more. Circus Around the World is an integratedcurriculum that allows students to research culture,history, social studies, language arts and geography ofa chosen country, while acquiring circus skills. A col-laborative approach among the artist, students, teach-ers and administrators builds to a joyous circus per-formance, which is presented to the whole community.Kevin O’Keefe; Grades K-8

CIRCUSYOGA blends the practice of yoga with the skillsof circus. Through this two-week interdisciplinary resi-dency students explore kinesiology, creativity and con-nection. Yoga teaches us how to be aware of our bodiesin action and Circus is a culture of inclusion and cele-bration that teaches how remarkable we can be in ourbodies. This residency explores anatomy and physiolo-gy as it relates to a particular skill. Students will learnhow the whole body and the focus of the mind con-tribute to movement, choices and abilities in any activ-ity. CircusYoga offers a cooperative learning environ-ment. The Artist Residency is an interdisciplinary, in-depth project that demonstrates how the arts can inspire uniquely creative and meaningful learning experiences for aschool community. Artists, principals and teachers collaborate to create an educational experience that transcends the typical classroom experience by exploring multiple-intelligence, hands-on ways of learning. Students learn to express themselves creatively while teachers are exposed to innovative strategies for implementing the CoreCurriculum Content Standards.

The Artist Residency takes place over a two- to six-week period. Participating artists-in-residence are carefully chosen for their artistic talent and innovative programs aswell as their ability to teach and relate to young people. The artists are committed to the interdepartmental approach, combining more than one academic discipline intothe activities of the residency, and work closely with school administrators and faculty to design the residency through a pre-planning meeting and teachers’ workshop.Core groups consisting of approximately 100 students form the nucleus of the residency. Ten-day residencies range in price from $4200 to $6500.

GUERILLA HAIKU Actor and Educator, CaleyVickerman, is passionate about the intersection ofarts and education. She is an actor specializing ininteractive and improvisational performance, a sto-ryteller and, a poet-enabler. She is a believer in thepower of words to connect us to ourselves, to eachother and to our neighborhoods and public spaces.Through Guerilla Haiku she offers programs tailoredtowards 4th-12th grade audiences for creative litera-cy programming, arts integration, internal teambuilding, character development, and to increase vis-ibility and deepen conversations with a school’s widercommunity. MINDFUL MURALS is an arts residency that com-bines mindfulness practice with mural making.During the residency, students learn by experiencethe power of mindfulness and its connection to cre-ativity. Upon completion, students have a tool box ofmindfulness practices to use for stress reductionand focused attention, as well as a mural to not onlybeautify the school, but stand as a daily reminder ofthe practice. MOSAIC AND TILE ARTS Students collaborate withtile and mosaic artist Kathy Casper to create a lastingwork of art for their school. From design to creation,this celebrated artist guides students through eachstep of the creative process, exploring a variety oftechniques. MURAL ARTS WITH DAN FENELON New Jersey artistDan Fenelon collaborates with school communitiesto create vibrant, high-energy murals and installa-tions. Students are led through the mural makingprocess from theme development and planning toparticipation in painting the finished work. Educatedat the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston,Dan has designed logos for Major League Baseball,the National Hockey League and the DiscoveryChannel’s American Choppers. PAGES TO PLAYERS JR This residency affords stu-dents the opportunity to explore a Shakespeare playin all its dimensions, from reading and discussion torehearsal and performance. Working with the educa-tion staff of The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey,the residency begins with an exploration of ensem-ble, introducing students to valuable skills for cre-ative collaboration and problem-solving. Workingwith an abridged Shakespeare text, the students willexplore both physical and verbal forms of expres-sion, building self-confidence and the fluent, effec-tive use of language. As time permits, the residencywill make interdisciplinary connections to art, musicand other areas that can enhance theatrical story-telling, but Shakespeare’s language remainsabsolutely central. Each residency will culminate in aperformance by the student ensemble. Schools mayalso wish to add a performance by The ShakespeareTheatre’s educational touring company, ShakespeareLIVE! THE POSSIBILITIES OF GLASS J. Kenneth Leap isNew Jersey’s premiere architectural stained-glassdesigner. With a career stretching over threedecades, he has completed installations in nearlyevery county in the state. As a teaching artist, he haslead professional development workshops, givenpresentations on the history and science of glass,and performed interactive demonstrations ofmedieval and renaissance techniques. In collabora-tion with schools, he has led student groups to cre-ate architectural installations celebrating local histo-ry while learning the storytelling power of glass.Students learn traditional and contemporary glasstechniques including enameling, fusing and glassmosaic. NEW – PRINTMAKING Master printer, professor, andteaching artist, Eileen Foti, has been introducing K-12 classes and university students, as well as teach-ers and professional artists to collaborative print-making for over 30 years. She has developed theChipboard Relief process; a low-tech, non-toxic tech-nique that can be successfully explored by children,novice printmakers and seasoned artists. Both sim-ple and sophisticated prints can be made with orwithout a printing press. This technique is great forstudios and classrooms that are not equipped withspecial ventilation, as soybean-based inks will beused and can be cleaned up with soap and water.Eileen Foti; Grades 4-12

REAL BEAUTY: UNCOVERED – LET’S BE REAL providesschools with a comprehensive “Let’s Be Real” educa-tional program, designed to help students develop anauthentic sense of their own beauty and value regard-less of society’s constraints and peer pressure. It pro-motes the understanding that beauty comes from with-in. In a world, where touched-up and altered images inthe media distort our perceptions, Real Beauty:Uncovered challenges students to accept themselvesfor who they really are. This program is comprised of aseries of classes for students, an interview/photogra-phy session with each participant and a culminatingevent for students and the community as a whole. SPIRITREE residencies draw on the power of art makingto tap the many talents and intelligences of students.During ten-day residencies, the Spiritree artists guidestudents through thematically defined, curriculum relat-ed residencies which culminate in installations and per-formances featuring students’ original masks, sculptureand processional puppets in papier mâchè. Spiritree alsooffers mural residencies where the student-artists arethe protagonists from the planning stages to the com-pletion of a lasting work of art for their school. Duringthree- to five-day mini-residencies, the students createtwo-dimensional artwork exploring a wide variety ofmaterials and techniques. At the conclusion of a mini-residency, the students act as docents, sharing their art-work and learning experience with the school communi-ty: students teaching students. The Spiritree artists planwith teachers to choose themes and develop projectsthat are appropriate and significant for the specific setting.Marco Giammetti and Carol Hendrickson; Grades K-12

NEW – STAINED GLASS MOSAIC This hybrid art formcombines the radiant colors of stained glass and theassembling method of mosaics. Students work collab-oratively to design an image and make it by adheringstained glass with silicone onto a clear glass sheet.Grout is applied to fill the spaces between the glasspieces, and visually mimic the leading of traditional win-dows. Students are empowered by learning to cutglass, and challenged to work as a team to completetheir luminous windows. Kit Sailer; Grades 7-12

WE ARE ALL ARTISTS A residency with muralist and arteducator Caren Frost Olmsted unleashes the artist ineach student that participates in the creation of a stun-ning, theme driven mural. Every student will get to par-ticipate in the painting (no matter what their skill level)with the end result of knowing that they have left a per-manent artistic legacy behind. Olmsted will design amural tailored to the age level and based upon themesprovided by the school, such as local history, land-scapes and community ideals. The duration of the proj-ect will be determined by the size and scale of the wallsto be painted and the number of students to be included.Once the mural is complete, Olmsted will do any neces-sary touch-ups, as well as seal the wall for longevity andeasy maintenance. This residency is also an excellentopportunity for parent volunteers to participate in a spe-cial school event. Caren Frost Olmsted; Grades K-12

WORLD DANCE During this dance residency, studentslearn folk dances representing different countries andcultures, while also learning about history, geographyand music. Each class learns a different dance and thenall classes learn one common dance, all of which areperformed at a culminating assembly program for theschool, parents and community. All classes perform infull costume and each dance segment is introducedwith a description of the country of origin and the his-tory of the dance. Dances can include: Chinese RibbonDance, African Lion Dance, Russian Trepak, HighlandFling, Classical Japanese Fan Dance, Japanese TaikoDrumming, Cicerennella, Italian Folk Dance, AustralianAboriginal Dance, French Minuet, Mexican Clap Dance,Merengue, Colonial dances and others!
