One of the most beloved operas of all time comes to Guild Hall Saturday -- like you’ve never imagined it before.

A new production of Verdi’s Rigoletto will be screened Saturday at 1 PM in high definition.

Director Michael Mayer has taken a unique direction for this production

Rigoletto Comes To Guild Hall

-- he’s set Verdi’s towering tragedy in, of all places, Las Vegas, circa 1960. Think Rat Pack -- Frank Sinatra and company served as the inspiration for Mayer’s take.

P i o t r B e c za l a p l a y s t h e womanizing Duke of Mantua, Željko Lucic is his tragic sidekick, Rigoletto, and Diana Damrau is Rigoletto’s daughter, Gilda. The production runs about 210 minutes and is

sung in Italian with English subtitles. Rigoletto is part of Guild Hall’s “The Met: Live in HD” series.

Maye r ’s g r oundb r eak i ng production opened at The Met in late January. Previously, Mayer directed the rock musical Spring Awakening, which earned him a Tony for Best Director. He also directed the well-received American Idiot, among others. New York Times music critic Anthony Tommasini said Mayer has “brought theatrical flair to his operatic debut and there are

dynamic elements in this colorful Rigoletto.”

Tickets are $22, $20 for members and $15 for students. The box office number is 631-324-4050.

Composer Victoria Bond will be on hand to speak at noon. For an additional donation audience members are welcome to attend this event as well – call the box office for additional details. Bond is the first woman ever awarded a doctorate in conducting from the Julliard School.

Unlike most years, the major categories in this years Oscar race all have strong favorites. That’s not to say an upset won’t happen – think Marisa Tomei in My Cousin Vinny – just don’t bet on it.

The most contentious race is for the Best Movie statue. There are two short-priced favorites – in this corner, Argo, which has swept most of the prestigious awards thus far, including earning the Screen Actor’s Guild nod. The SAG award is the most accurate predictor of victory on Oscar night. However, to win, Argo must buck

Oscar Preview: Indy Picks The Winners

another reliable predictor: the Best Movie Oscar usually goes hand-in-hand with the Best Director statue. In this case, Ben Affleck didn’t even earn a nomination for Argo – only three films have won for Best Movie without their director getting at least a nomination.

The main rival is clearly Lincoln, ably directed by East Hampton’s own Steven Spielberg. In Oscar’s 85 year history, 65 of 85 films that earned the Best Movie Oscar also won for Best Director. Since 2001, only two films have won without their director winning as well. The last

six years the same film won in both categories. The last time a film won without its director being nominated was in 1989 (Driving Miss Daisy).

Our pick for Best Movie is Argo. We think bypassing Affleck for a nomination was an oversight and the academy will correct itself Sunday night. That will leave Spielberg with a pretty nice consolation prize: the Best Director statue. Want a longshot? Ang Lee, for Life Of Pi.

The Best Suppor t ing Actor category is really the only major one that is wide open. It pits five Oscar winners against each other: Tommy Lee Jones, Christoph Waltz, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Robert De Niro, and Alan Arkin. It’s a crapshoot, but Jones is a slight favorite over Waltz and Hoffman. We predict Tommy Lee Jones wins Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Lincoln, but don’t be surprised if the academy honors De Niro.

Sally Fields even looked like Mary

Todd Lincoln in the film, but Anne Hathaway is a mortal lock for Best Supporting Actress for her role as the waif in Les Miserables.

Speaking of locks, Daniel Day Lewis wins the Best Actor statue for his amazing performance as Abraham Lincoln.

The Best Actress category is a two man – umm, make that woman – race pitting Jennifer Lawrence (Silver Linings Playbook) against Jess ica Chas ta in (Zero Dark Thir ty ) . Emannuel le Riva is a deserving longshot. Lawrence is an Academy darling, though. The Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role goes to Jennifer Lawrence.

Our other picks:Be s t Song : Sky fa l l , Be s t

Cinematography: Life Of Pi, Best Adapted Screenplay: Argo, Best Foreign Language Film: Amour, Best Documentary: Searching For Sugarman; Original Screenplay: Zero Dark Thirty, Visual Effects: Life Of Pi.

It’s a brand new year at Bay Street Theatre in Sag Harbor and a brand new 22nd season has just been announced. Three hilarious shows have been chosen for this year’s Mainstage Season. The shows are Lend Me A Tenor, by Ken Ludwig; directed by Don Stephenson (May 28 to June 23), The Mystery Of Irma Vep by Charles Ludlum; directed by Kenneth Elliott (July 2 to 28) and A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum, directed by Marcia Milgrom Dodge; book by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.

“It’s going to be a summer full of laughs, that’s for sure,” says Tracy Mitchell, Executive Director of Bay Street Theatre. “We know people in the Hamptons are here for a good time all summer and we plan on delivering our share of fun.”

“We think these shows are some of the best comedies written for the stage,” says Gary Hygom, Producer for Bay Street Theatre, “and the musical ‘Forum’ is not only one of the greatest musical comedies, it also features the music and lyrics of Stephen Sondheim with the signature song ‘Comedy Tonight!’”

Coming Soon

A Good Day To Die Hard (R) In this, the fifth installment, John McClane heads to Russia to kick butt. It’s not the same without Bonnie Bedelia. Still, if you like the series, consider it a guilty pleasure. Yippee Ki-yay, comrade.

New In Theaters

Top Gun An IMAX 3D Experience (PG-13) Pete Mitchell is back, and

so is archrival Val Kilmer as the two wreak havoc in the sky as fighter pilots competing for the Top Gun title. Kelly McGillis is back as well, and she’s still much too tall for Tom Cruise. The aerial scenes, always riveting, are even better in 3D, the sound track still rocks, and let’s face it -- Cruise is terrific in the role. Hard to believe it’s been 27 years.

New On DVD

Prometheus Ridley Scott (Alien, Blade Runner) is back in the sci-fi genre, and he delivers a space epic that mirrors Alien in every conceivable way. Noomi Rapace (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo) leads a stellar cast that includes Charlize Theron, Michael Fassbender, and Guy Pearce. Theron is delicious as the cold-blooded ice queen leading the mission. Watch for Idris Elba, who plays the captain – he was Stringer Bell on “The Wire.”

Today’s Birthday: Peter Tork, 1942

No, Peter Tork isn’t British. He was born in Washington DC and attended high school in Storrs – his father was a professor at the University of Connecticut. After a stint in college, Tork moved to Manhattan, drawn to the city by the burgeoning folk scene in Greenwich Village.

Tork always had a way with musical instruments. He began taking piano lessons at nine, but he had a knack for stringed instruments -- quickly becoming proficient on guitar, harpsichord and banjo to name a few.

He befriended Stephen Stills, who had just auditioned for a television show about a rock band that was still in the infancy stage. Stills, the producers told him, wasn’t good looking enough for the role, so he suggested Tork.

The show was of course “The Monkees,” which became a band as well; Tork was the only member of the group who actually played instruments on the albums.

Tork eventually tired of the show – he played the loveable, dumb one -- and bought out his contract. He formed his own band and became a music producer as well, working with George Harrison, among others. He has had several bouts of cancer of late but he’s reportedly in remission and doing fine.

ARIES (Mar. 20 - Apr. 20) There is big energy surrounding communication, so there is an

opportunity to accomplish a lot this week. Take out that to do list and start getting things done. Checking

things off will be very satisfying.

TAURUS (Apr. 20 - May 21) Caution is this week’s key word. Not all scary paranoia, just a practical approach until you see where everyone’s true motives lie. Shouldn’t be hard for you, so take your time.

GEMINI (May 21 - June 22) Short fuse energy is still around, so take those deep breaths. Make sure you eat right, because low blood sugar and your desire to fight this week may be a bad combination.

CANCER (June 22 - July 23) Focusing on your career rather than close relationships may be best this week. You may make some big headway in the career department and if you have a fight with a Gemini it doesn’t count, so do your best to avoid such things.

LEO (July 23 - Aug. 23) There is still that foggy, dreamy energy around, so you may want to enjoy it. Art and music and all beautiful things will be more satisfy even if you don’t have clarity in practical matters.

VIRGO (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) Some of our favorite kind of energy this week -- practical, list making, good solid steps forward kind of energy. Take out a list or make a new one and keep yourself on task.

LIBRA (Sept. 23 - Oct. 23) Do take things slow this week and know that hard work done now will have big rewards down the road. Any adjustments you have to make will be worth the journey.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23 - Nov. 22) Stable change is the energy this week, still. Just don’t close yourself off from others and get lost in your own head. Pay attention to the energy that is trying to get your attention which is outside your comfortable insular world.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 - Dec. 21) You may want to make swift decisive change, but moving too quickly now is probably not the best choice. Your impatience runs high; do your best not to give into it.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 - Jan. 20) Work, work, work. There is a lot of energy around working hard right now, just don’t forget the people you love. Keep the balance. You know how easy it is for you to use work to avoid other stuff, so cut it out.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 - Feb. 19) The change is happening all around you -- just take a look if you forget. It may be slower than you want, but it is all still moving forward. Don’t be afraid of bold change, just be patient.

PISCES (Feb. 19 - Mar. 20) This dreamy and intuitive time is right up your alley. Know what you know and trust those inner voices, they are telling you the truth. When you are feeling at peace even when outside things seem intense – trust the feeling of peace.

NOTE: If you were born at the end or beginning of a sign, read the sign before or after your birthday.
