In Montauk: A Kim Cummings Film

Julie Wagner, a young women yearning for self-discovery, takes off on a journey to Montauk in Kim Cummings’ independent drama/romance, In Montauk.

With a successful husband who adores her, a baby on the way, a close circle of family and friends, and a budding career as a photographer, Julie Wagner (Nina Kaczorowski) appears to have it all. So why is she alone in Montauk in the middle of December?

During the cold, stark days of the Long Island winter, Julie throws herself into preparation for an upcoming solo show, trying to combat her growing feelings of uncertainly about the impending trajectories of her life.

Everything changes when a prickly but brilliant composer-musician, Lukas Hassel, knocks on Julie’s door with an odd request. This sets into motion a series of events that bring her ever-closer to her hopes, dreams and fears, and forces her to make choices she couldn’t have fathomed.

Siren’s Tale Productions will release In Montauk on DVD on February 18 for the first time following its highly-lauded rollout on the film festival

circuit earlier this year. In Montauk was stunningly shot

on location along the gorgeous seascapes of Montauk. It is the first feature film by writer/director Kim Cummings, whose 2000 short film Weeki Wachee Girls screened worldwide in more than 70 festivals and garnered three “Best of” awards.

The film also offers a breakthrough performance by Danish superstar Lukas Hassel, star of Denmark’s top-rated show “Anna Pihl” and a leading media presence across all of Scandinavia.

With In Montauk, contemplative f i lmmaker Cummings offers a seemingly familiar story turned inside-out by a leading character who can’t help but put herself into the most uncomfortable position of all—confronting life’s imperfect choices in the hopes of coming to grips with one through which she can be true to herself.

More information on In Montauk can be found at the film’s website at www.sirenstalefilms.com/projects/montauk and on its Facebook page at www.facebook.com/InMontaukthemovie. J.M

Let’s Let’s Let’s Let’s Play Bridge

By George Aman

A hand very similar to this one was played recently at the Water Mill Bridge Club. It is an excellent example of the need for declarer to not play any card until he has come up with a plan to make his contract. While the small slam was somewhat ambitious, it was not unreasonable. South used cue bidding to establish that his side held three aces and second round control in diamonds.

When West led the ace of diamonds, many declarers played the 4 from dummy and the 2 from his hand. Next came another diamond from West which declarer won with the queen. Now he thought about his plan to make 12 tricks. He noted that he needed the finesse in spades to work. However, even if the finesse worked, he still held a losing small club.

South tried the finesse in spades after drawing three rounds of trumps. He could trump a third spade after winning the ace and queen but had no entry to play a fourth spade on which he could discard his 4 of clubs. Only then did he realize that he could have used the jack of diamonds as an extra way to get to dummy to play dummy’s fourth

doomed the slam contract. When West leads the ace of diamonds, South must play either the king or queen so that he can lead the 2 of diamonds to dummy’s jack.

If someone were to tell you there is a place on the East End that can handle a wedding for 1200, look no further than East Wind in Wading River.

And don’t worry if you are thinking small – there is a wedding package for any crowd and any budget.First and foremost there is the inn itself, with its luxurious rooms. That means the wedding party can kick back a day or

two early and stay after the reception. It a perfect place for out-of-town guests to repose as well. There is a spa/salon and a pool/fitness center on the premises, and East Wind is home to the famous Desmond’s restaurant.

The lavish grounds provide ample room for an outdoor ceremony, or there is an indoor chapel, of course. There are five different ballrooms on site, from intimate to grand.

The marriage planners at East Wind can make a complex event easy; they can recommend photographers, bands and DJs, florists, gifts, limousines, tuxedos, linen rentals, and table centerpieces.

The staff will work closely with the lucky couple to plan every detail, including a lavish menu customized by the bride and groom.

East Wind was named one of the Top Five places on Long Island to get married by Newsday. There will be a bridal expo Sunday – doors open at 11 AM, Register online or call 631-929-6585. By the way, there

is a video tour and the opportunity to have a live chat about your upcoming special day -- just visit the website at www.eastwindlongisland.com.

Gurney's Inn

Gurney’s Inn, with its world-class ocean views and beaches, would be a perfect wedding venue even without the world-class service.

When you book a wedding, you inherit three new friends, Ginny, Phyllis, and Zelko. They become your “best friends” from that moment on. Every couple is encouraged to plan a wedding that reflects their personal style. Switching things up a little bit makes it fun and exciting.

Gurney’s only hosts one wedding per day, so the bride becomes the VIP of The Inn.There is nothing like a beach ceremony customized by the couple to reflect their personal tastes in music -- perhaps a

harp, violin or the music of a steel drum playing in the sand. Just in case Mother Nature doesn’t cooperate, a newly renovated Oceanview Dining Room converts to a beautiful chapel.

Following the ceremony a cocktail reception, perhaps held on the breeze-swept Lido or Sun Decks, is a perfect place to unwind. Top shelf open bar serving cocktails of distinction, along with creative hot and cold hors d’oeuvres and of course, Gurney’s Famous Raw Bar, served over ice in a Sailboat Display are delightful features.

For dinner, beautifully appointed “place card” tables decorated with sand, shells, beach glass, mini-lighthouses, and driftwood set the scene.

The elegant banquet room, with sweeping views of the ocean, easily accommodates up to 220 guests! An award winning chef and his culinary team will prepare a sumptuous dinner menu or buffet; the executive patisserie will create a fairytale wedding cake, designed by the bride and groom.

Included in the package is a deluxe bridal suite that the bridal party can call home the entire day of the wedding. The folks at Gurney’s believe that on the day of the wedding the bride should be concerned with only one thing: making

herself as beautiful as she can – on the outside, but also on the inside and this means, staying relaxed, calm and keeping a sense of humor. All the other details will be taken care of by wedding coordinators and their staff.

Gurney’s will host a bridal showcase on Saturday from 10 AM until 3:00 PM.

Wide open blue skies, crystal clear water lapping the sun-drenched sand. Nothing says romance like the East End’s beautiful beaches.

For many couples, their shared love of the outdoors has to be underscored when it’s time to say their wedding vows. Beachside ceremonies and love expressed al fresco add to the mystique of the moment, and when it comes to gorgeous settings for stating your love, the North and South Fork have an endless array.

But you can’t just hop on down to the beach with your friends, family, and favorite officiant. Most municipalities require permits if you’re bringing a bunch of friends to an outdoor public place for your wedding or reception.

Here’s an overview of what might be required. (Make sure you check with your individual town or village to see if they have special, or additional, rules.)

If the plan is to just meet with a handful of your nearest and dearest for a brief ceremony,

most municipalities don’t require permits. It’s when the crowd is larger -- generally over 50 people -- and the celebration is more extensive, that special permit requirements begin to kick in.

On Shelter Island, Town Clerk Dorothy Ogar affirmed permitting depends on the size of the crowd attending. If a proposal includes music or staging, the town board would have to approve an outdoor assembly permit, which runs about $200.

Indian Wells and Atlantic Avenue Beaches in Amagansett and Navy Road Beach and Kirk Park in Montauk are the most popular public settings in East Hampton, Town Clerk Carol Brennan reported. Permits are required for assemblies over 50, and, if a reception is the desire, a review of plans for music, length of time, potential parking waivers, or bonfires is in order. In East Hampton Town, tents aren’t allowed on the beaches, but wedding guests can enjoy adult beverages.

That’s not the case in Riverhead, Town Clerk Diane Wilhelm informed. No alcohol is allowed at public parks and beaches, so “people don’t look to do a lot of receptions here,” she said. Up on the North Fork, those who want to include libations with their outdoor ceremony often choose to say their vows at any of a number of area wineries.

The town code in Riverhead does provide waivers for the serving of alcoholic beverages as part of its special permitting process. But the process calls for special insurance and security, so people generally don’t pursue outdoor receptions at public parks and beaches.

Instead, said Wilhelm, “we don’t really fuss.” People will have brief ceremonies at the Iron Pier beach pavilion or the gazebo at Reeves Beach. “It’s a pretty setting overlooking the Sound,” she observed.

Also on the North Fork, Goldsmith’s Inlet in Southold Town is a popular locale for wedding ceremonies, Town Recreation Supervisor Ken Reeves informed. His department has a special application designed for wedding ceremonies on town beaches. They’re due at least three

When Your Church Is Outdoorsmonths before the event. (Most towns want that much lead time.)

How many people are invited, how many vehicles are expected, the length of time for the use of the space and how many temporary parking permits are needed are some of the questions asked on the permit. It’s free to town residents. Nonresidents expecting fewer than 50 guest pay $50; $75 if a larger crowd is expected. Like other municipalities may, Southold Town asks for a refundable cleanup deposit of $250.

In Southampton, the town website offers an extensive list of dos and don’ts for facility use at public beaches. The Parks & Recreation Department oversees requests for facility use permits. Find the rules on their section of the website.

If you want to host your outdoor event in one of the region’s incorporated villages, be sure to check with officials there, since their rules could be different from the town they’re located in. For state sites, you need to get permission from the regional representative of the state parks department.

These days a wedding isn't just a single event, but a year long celebration. It's a magnificent time to join together with family and friends to celebrate. In September of 2012 my now husband Joe Cipro popped the question.

I have a knack for par ty planning and I always thought planning a wedding would be rather simple. Perhaps I underestimated the whole experience. Here we were setting off on a journey of budgeting, planning, shopping, planning, celebrating and more planning.

First order of business, the date. Right away I knew we had to get married before summer time. Working in the Hamptons means long summer hours and crazy schedules. That gave us eight months, a breeze I figured!

We decided on April 27 at The Hedges Inn in East Hampton. I've always loved The Hedges Inn, overlooking Town Pond. It has even been a location for a bridal shoot I did in a past issue of The Independent Bride. We also lucked out booking the venue a week before the venue and room prices doubled for the season. I always like to get a good deal.

Now for the dress, something I also lucked out with. I took a shot in the dark and ordered a 75 percent off final sale Vera Wang dress that was just perfect. I wanted an old hollywood glamour type feel to the dress and the wedding as a whole. It was the dress I had always dreamed of. A quick trip to Stitch in Southampton

for alterations and it was a perfect fit. With the three most important wedding

items ready to go (husband, dress and venue), it was on to the rest of the celebrations.

We threw an engagement party at Bread & Tulips in New York City in November. Joe's family is from Maryland while mine lives in the Hamptons. We wanted to meet somewhere in the middle. We wined and dined our guests while many friends and family were able to meet for the first time.

Next up, the bachelorette party! I must say I have the best group of girlfriends. Twelve of us boarded Spirit Airlines (never again, but that's a whole different story) and took off for a February weekend in South Beach. My Maid of Honor, my sister Jenna, was living in Palm Beach at the time, so this trip was perfect. We partied it up at Nikki Beach and Wall at the W Hotel and spent our days at the spa at The Palms.

My bridal shower took place in March. My mom hosted it at our home in East Hampton and it was tea party themed. Champs, cupcakes and tea . . . it was a super fun afternoon with family and friends.

Now in between all of the fun events was the prepping. Dance lessons at Arthur Murray Dance Studio took over our Tuesday evenings. Sometimes I felt like the walking dead trying to learn the foxtrot after The Independent's deadline day. I'm so glad we did it because

it's something I will remember forever (the experience and the dance steps). Every waking hour was filled with invitations and guest lists, tastings and budgets. At the time it felt like a huge chore, but in the end it was worth every minute and dollar.

The week of the big day we had so much planned. First was the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner at Nick & Toni's in East Hampton. The dinner in the newly renovated restaurant staple was amazing as always.

The next night we hosted a meet up at Wolffer Estate Vineyard in Sagaponack, where our guests who came a day early could enjoy live music and wine. It was great to give our guests, especially those from out of town and/or had never been to the Hamptons, something fun everyone could participate in.

The wedding day I woke up at The Hedges Inn and had a fantastic breakfast at the Inn. I must note that Inn keeper Ann Clarke took amazing care of us through this whole experience.

The time had come. My mom and my dad

walked down the aisle to the music of a strolling violinist. The ceremony was short and sweet, just like we wanted it, in the garden at The Hedges Inn. It was a beautiful afternoon, we couldn't have asked for better weather. We had done it!

Onto the cocktail hour and dinner. It was the perfect night, filled with love. Friends and family danced the night away and we made a ton of beautiful memories.

Ladies can celebrate bachelorette parties with a special package that includes a 30-minute

Wedding-Ready Hair And Makeupneck, back, and shoulder massage, a 25-minute ocean radiance facial and a manicure and pedicure. $260 per person.

For more information call Gurney’s at 631-668-2345.

Whites Pharmacy in East Hampton thinks every bride deserves to look beautiful. Resident

The studio also offers a treatment on exotic eyes and lips for $45. (Bridal tip: wear a button down shirt, come with clean and dry hair, and bring any hair jewelry and/or headpieces to the trial.)

East Wind also offers special wedding treatments for the boys. Grooms and groomsmen are welcome to gather before the big day for a day of pampering and relaxation. Package includes a 50-minute massage, a 30-minute manicure, and a hair cleanse and cut. The entire package is $159.

Here are some other tips for looking your best on the big day:

• Don’t have any new/different facial or skin treatments done the day before the big day.

• Wear a white T-shirt to makeup trials in a store so you can see how the makeup looks against a pale color.

• Take a picture of yourself in daylight (with no flash) to see how you look after the trial.

• Bring photos of a desired look to any makeup trial.

Untitled Love Poem

By Gretchen Fischer

I glance at him across the room; his beard is grayer then I remember from

yesterday

As gray as my hair was when I glanced in the mirror two years ago and knew.

We are middle-aged…we have weathered the storm of three daughters and parents dying

We glance at each other across the room…we negotiate with our middle-

aged glances;

Who will walk the dog, buy the toilet paper, take the garbage out…

who will be the first to throw their arm across the warm body that crawls into

bed.

One of us.

One would assume Josh Brolin inherited his love for acting from his father James, who burst to stardom on “Marcus Welby MD” before the youngster was even born. After all, his mother Jane Cameron Agee dabbled in acting, his stepmother is Barbra Streisand, and his stepbrother is Jason Gould.

But Josh grew up on a ranch and intended to be a rancher until a high school improv teacher steered him toward acting. He landed a role in Goonies while he was still a teenager. He was up for a plum role in “21 Jump Street” but lost out to Johnny Depp - the pair have been close friends ever since.

Oddly, her career floundered after that for three decades. In 2007 he landed two plum roles, a corrupt cop in American Gangster and the protagonist in No Country For Old Men. In 2008 he earned further critical success for his performance

in Milk.Brolin never swayed from his

original vision, though. He lives on a ranch in California with his two sons and girlfriend. He drinks a bit — he’s been arrested twice on related charges.

He is currently working on the film Everest.

On This Date: In 1999 President Clinton was acquitted of two Impeachment charges.

In 2004 Mattel announced Barbie and Ken were breaking up.

Famous Birthdays: President Lincoln (1809), Bill Russell (1934).

Coming SoonPompeii (PG-13) Paul W.S.

Anderson (Resident Evil) tries his luck with the old gladiator theme where in a slave turned gladiator fights to save his true love. Hint: Mount Vesuvius erupts during the movie. Carrie-Anne Moss (The Matrix) and Kit Harrington (“Game of Thrones”) star.

New To TheatersThe L ego Mov i e ( PG -13 )

Improbably, it’s a smash. Take the kids, despite the rating. Chris Pratt is the voice of a perfectly ordinary – well, piece of plastic – gets drafted into an improbable journey to stop an evil tyrant from destroying the world. Yes, think Lord Of The Rings. New On DVD

Lee Daniels’ The Butler (PG-13) As

was the case with Precious, Daniels’ unabashedly directed with one eye on the Academy of Motion Picture Arts. In other words, he pandered for Oscar nominations, and it hurt his work. Putting his name in the title didn’t help, either.

The script is short on historical facts and long on pap and given the extraordinary cast it is surprisingly boring. Predictably, it bombed with Oscar voters.

Now PlayingLabor Day (PG-13) This was

supposed to be an Oscar vehicle for Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin, but it had to be re-tooled and missed the deadline. Still, the story, about a boy and his mother who take in a stranger, tugs on the emotional heartstrings and the actors perform admirably. In the end, though, the writer/director Jason Reitman (Up In The Air, Juno) dials up the sappiness to overdose level.

RoboCop (PG-13) Yes, another one. No one is quite sure why Sony felt the need to remake the 1987 classic but it presumably takes the technology up a notch, which means it will be loud and annoying.

Ingredients (serves 4)1 lb green split peas1c chopped onion1 clove of garlic

1 bay leaf1 ham hock

1 c chopped celery1oz vegetable oil

salt and pepper to taste

MethodFirst sort through the peas to

remove any stones. Then wash and drain peas. In a large pot sauté the onion, celery, and garlic in the

Split Pea Soupvegetable oil. Once they become slightly translucent add the ham hock, peas, bay leaf and two and a half quarts of water.

Bring to a simmer and skim off the scum that rises to the top then simmer for one and a half hours stirring occasionally so that the peas don't stick to the bottom.

Once finished cooking remove the hock and the bay leaf and puree the soup in a blender. Remember if the soup gets too thick you can always add a little more water.
