Edward VI as Child

Edward VI became the King of England when he was only nine years old. He died when he was only 15 years old. Then his sister Elizabeth became the queen – known as Queen Elizabeth I.

This is a painting of him when he was two years old.

The artist used paints made of real gold & costly red pigments to show us the velvet & embroidered silk.

What is Edward holding in his hand?

That gold rattle is a symbol – the scepter of a future king.

Georges Rouault[1871 - 1958]was born in Paris, the son of a cabinetmaker. He started painting this picture in 1916 but didn’t stop working on it until 1938.

The Old King

This “Old King” represents the kings in the Old Testament of the Bible who fought bitterly for their religion & people. It is not a painting of a specific king as the other paintings in this slide.

What is he holding?

Is he showing his full face or just his profile?

II Bronzino[1503 - 1572]was born in Italy. He is famous for his delicately formal & coldly clear portraits, which seem to have an enamel-like surface.

Portrait of Eleanor & Son

Eleanor was actually not a queen, but was a Duke’s wife. She was a member of a very important family in Italy.

This picture was painted about 1545.

The artist left the background plain so that we would be sure to see all the fancy designs on her dress. The colors are silvery white, gold, black & blue.

Her son is dressed rather plainly compared to her jewels, and very rich & elegant clothing, which is covered with rich pattern.

Do you think his hat looks like Edward VI’s? Do you see the pearls on it? What else do you see?

What are he holding?

Does his robes look shiny or smooth to you?
