Artback NT presents
Artists On
Tour2018 Program
Artback NT’s Artists on Tour initiative
is a high quality program of workshops
supporting the development of
established artists, young people and
the community within their regional
and remote location. The program is
available for NT arts and community
organisations and schools with options
to book as one off or ongoing.
—
Artback NT has brought together leading artists from
across the Territory to deliver workshops around a
range of art forms. Workshops have been created for
practicing artists, arts educators, young people and
creative communities. You can pick from pre-existing
workshops or we can tailor a program that is specific
to your groups’ skills, age and timeframe.
Workshops will be available from March to December
2018. Explore the artistic options on Artback NT’s website.
We look forward to working with you to bring engaging
arts and cultural activities to your community!
Gail Evans is a director, writer and actor based
in Darwin. She has trained overseas in Anne Bogart’s
Viewpoints method of direction, which focuses on
space, shape and movement to generate a deep
connection to truthful and honest delivery.
She works regularly with young and Indigenous
people regionally, remotely and overseas through
Corrugated Iron Youth Arts. Gail has extensive
experience in delivering directing workshops
to emerging and developing practitioners, school
drama teachers and students of drama.
Introduction to improvisation and Viewpoints theatre methods
Participants will explore methods of improvisation and comedic performance through a series of individual and group exercises carried out in a playful, supportive environment. A focus on movement, space and shape will deepen characterisation and extend performers’ creative thinking, teamwork and overall confidence.

Hannah Van Der Wal
Hannah is a practising visual artist and arts educator
based in Darwin. Her personal practice explores local
themes, drawing inspiration from the flora, fauna and
landscapes of the NT. She works with various mediums
in her paintings and illustrations which are colourful
and sometimes quirky interpretations of the human
experience within our natural environments. She
has a Bachelor in Visual Communications, a Diploma
in Education and a Certificate in TESOL. Hannah is
passionate about arts education and the therapeutic
benefits that creative exploration offers all people.
3D Nature Sculptures
In Hannah’s workshop, participants will draw their inspirations from the local flora and fauna of their region. They will create 3 dimensional sculptural works using tactile, hands-on methods and materials such as Papier-mâché. There will be time to explore the elements of pattern, colour and line before painting the sculptures using personally relevant designs. Participants will then have the option to collaborate to display their sculptures in an on-site installation of the work.
Melissa Kerl, like most artists, juggles a career full
of passion and many labels. Based in Alice Springs,
she is an independent performer, choreographer,
director, movement educator, events manager,
producer, community cultural development
advocate, part-time clown doctor, karaoke cruise ship
captain and interpretive dance host. With a 17-year
career in the performing arts sector which includes
a Bachelor of Applied Arts (Dance) and a Bachelor of
Education, Melissa’s arts practice has always been
driven by inclusion, participation and joy.
Let’s put on a cabaret!
To Mel, Cabaret literally means ‘anything goes’! Any age, any performance style, any experience level. We will play, giggle, create, dress up and make the most entertaining show in your town. Learn and develop MC skills and create a short act so the crowd can go wild! This workshop is suitable to both mentor existing performers and groups, as well as plant the seed to support and inspire new talent to give it a go.
Aaron Lim is a Darwin born b*boy who has been
breaking since 2007. He developed his skills in
a range of programs at Tracks Dance Company,
performing in their yearly festivals including Struck,
Cook Queen Kelly and Zombies in the Banyan Tree. Aaron
has a long standing relationship with internationally
renowned b*boy and choreographer Nick Power
and is currently a core dancer in the touring
performance Between Tiny Cities | រវាងទីក្រុងតូច.
He has been teaching since 2010 in schools and with
Corrugated Iron Youth Arts. Aaron also competes
regularly in battle with his crew D*City Rockers.
Breaking for beginners
Aaron’s workshop is an introduction to Hip Hop culture and the basics of break dancing. This workshop develops specific Hip Hop skills with a focus on foot work, freezes and power moves. A fun simple offering suitable for varying experience levels culminating in the collective performance of a simple 1 min routine.

Kamahi’s artistic practice sits across visual arts, acting
and singing. Born in Katherine, he began painting and
sketching at a young age. His grandfather, a member
of the Gurindji tribe born at Banka Banka, was his
early mentor and teacher. This old man had travelled
many miles mustering across the country, had strong
kinship with the land and told Kamahi many stories
about the desert. Drawing on his grandfather’s
teaching, Kamahi successfully entwines his own
unique style and images with other art styles taken
from many locations and experiences.
Visual arts with acrylics and latex for young people
Kamahi’s workshop will provide participants with an introduction to unique visual arts mediums through a range of experiments. Participants will gain an insight into how they can manipulate these mediums to create work. Individuals will then focus on a solo work exploring in particular the use of latex masking in painting to articulate the participant’s story.
Jinu Mathew is a passionate teacher, psychologist,
professional dancer and choreographer living in
Darwin. Having choreographed various dance
programs in Australia, India, Switzerland and Saint
Lucia, Jinu started her dance school – Transwings
Dance Studio in 2016. Since then has been involved
in events such as Darwin Festival, Seabreeze Festival,
Malandarri Festival - Borroloola and Bak’bididi Festival
- Ramingining. Jinu believes that every dance form in
the world has traditional origins and when exchanged
in its original form we will find the common ground.
That connection is her inspiration to use dance to
communicate between cultures.
Cross-cultural dance
Jinu’s workshop takes you on a journey through different dance forms including Afro-Jazz, Bollywood, Contemporary, Indian Classical, Kathak, Bachata and Soca Caribbean. This unique form of engagement is a high energy and fun fusion of diverse dance forms. The workshop creates a space that facilitates cultural exchange and the coming together of people to celebrate dancing.

Linda Joy
Linda Joy is an arts educator and practicing visual
artist living and working in Darwin. She was inspired
at a young age by painting and photography and later
discovered the fine art of printmaking. Currently her
practice is painting Territory landscapes using inks,
with a focus is on the inherent ancientness of country.
She has exhibited in numerous group and solo
exhibitions and is the recipient of several art awards.
Experiments in printmaking – roll and scroll
Linda’s workshop begins with drawing inspiration from Asian symbology or another chosen theme. Participants explore the elements of line and shape to develop drawings suitable for foam board relief printing. They make plates, experiment with hand-printing techniques and collaborate to create Asian scrolls. Participants then manipulate printing technologies using imagery, colour and texture to create their own unique designs.
Bryn is a versatile dancer and animateur, originally
from NSW’s Northern Beaches, now living in
Darwin. A core dancer with Gary Lang NT Dance
Company, she has also worked with Tracks Dance
Company, NT Music School and coordinated over
40 dance groups for Nightcliff Seabreeze Festival.
Particularly committed to developing creative
storytelling avenues for young and emerging artists
Bryn has a dedicated, light-hearted approach to
dance. She works closely with a lot of organisations,
community groups and schools to coordinate and
create vibrant performance platforms and outcomes.
Storytelling through dance
Bryn’s workshop uses unique fabrics and materials to provide creative starting points for storytelling and abstract expression through dance. The way we use props within dance performance is explored through a series of exercises and ‘play’ that allows participants to articulate their individual and collective stories. Pattern making through group movement and props are central. This workshop encourages confidence building and teamwork, accumulating in either group or individual performance outcomes.
