San Jose, CA - May 28, 2013 - The Bay Area is a hotbed for non-profit organizations presenting internationally renowned jazz artists to the greater arts community. Alongside other prolific Bay Area institutions such as SFJAZZ and the Monterey Jazz Festival, San Jose Jazz offers innovative arts programming celebrating the jazz tradition and singular concerts curated for audiences within the heart of Silicon Valley. New attractions at Summer Fest 2013 will include Jazz+ performances, which will bring select main stage acts to the intimate San Jose Repertory Theatre, Blackbird Tavern, Theatre on San Pedro Square, and The Pagoda from August 9 - 11 at 9 pm; acts will include the Clifford Brown/Max Roach Legacy Project (Aug. 9, $5), Arturo O'Farrill & the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra (Aug. 10, $20), Ben Vereen (Aug. 10, $20), Yosvany Terry (Aug. 10, $10), The Cookers (Aug. 11, $15), and Derrick Hodge (Aug. 11, $10). Jazz+ shows will be ticketed separately from the main festival entrance fees, a festival pass is not required for entrance, and Jazz+ tickets are now on sale. This year, San Jose Jazz will present an unprecedented level of talent at the San Jose Rep on August 10 & 11 from 12 pm - 8 pm; wristbands for these daytime festival sets will cost an additional $10 per day and are now available for purchase online and will be at all festival gates. Children will be admitted to the Rep with a General Admission Child wristband when accompanied by an adult. VIP ticket holders will have access to the Rep shows during these hours and to all Jazz+ performances, with no ticket reservations necessary. Summer Fest 2013 will boast the brand new Big Easy Stage, and along with the YP Blues Stage, this dynamic area of the festival will offer special food and drink options in one of San Jose's most historic districts. San Jose Made will showcase 20 vendors selling hand-made merchandise in this area as well. The Big Easy Stage will feature the best of New Orleans jazz and zydeco, curated by Jay Meduri of San Jose's Poor House Bistro. The YP Blues Stage has also moved to be closer to the center of the action to make it easier to sample within an often hectic festival schedule. The Kaiser Permanente Salsa Stage will have an emphasis on music from three diverse international salsa scenes, including New York (Friday), Puerto Rico (Saturday), and Cuba (Sunday). Opening the Kaiser Permanente Salsa Stage on Friday, August 9, local percussionist Josh Jones will honor salsa great Ray Barretto with a high-energy set filled with many of Barretto's classic dance tunes. Legendary percussionist Louie Romero's hard-swinging, old-school salsa group Mazacote will close out the Salsa Stage that evening. On both Saturday and Sunday, the Latin Jazz Youth Ensemble of San Francisco will open the stage; Ricardo Lemvo y Makina Loca will perform the closing set on Saturday night, and salsa favorite Wil Campa will close it out on Sunday. Several salsa acts will make their debut appearance at this year's Summer Fest, including Josh Jones, Futuro Picante, and Orquestra Saboricua. The Jazz Beyond Stage, one of San Jose Jazz's most adventurous booking endeavors of 2013, will feature stand-out acts such as Derrick Hodge, Mark de Clive-Lowe presents CHURCH, Audiotrópico, and Miles Bonny + B. Lewis. As the definition of Jazz expands over time, Summer Fest is dedicated to delivering its most contemporary forms throughout the festival weekend and with year-round Saturday night performances at The Pagoda. For the first time, San Jose Jazz will have a parade from Plaza de César Chavez Park to the Big Easy Stage on Saturday, August 10 at 1:30 pm, to kick off the first concert on that stage. Bug Horn Rex will lead the parade. Other downtown events during festival weekend include a Jazz Mass with Walter Bankovitch (member of the band Full Spectrum; Swing Stage at Theatre on San Pedro Square) and Ian Hinckle at Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph on Sat. Aug. 10 @ 4:30 pm and Sun. Aug. 11 @ 11:30 am. The evening Club Crawl will appear at select venues in downtown to extend exclusive free night-time music offerings on Friday, August 9 and Saturday, August 10; venues will include The Fairmont Hotel, Hilton, Hyatt, Hotel De Anza, Blackbird Tavern, and Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant. San Jose Jazz's NextGen stage will also showcase local talent, free to the public. For the fourth year in a row, DRUM! Magazine, in partnership with San Jose Jazz Summer Fest, will present "DRUM! Night" - the premier drumming event in Northern California - at the San Jose Repertory Theatre on Friday, August 9, 2013. This year's show will feature clinic performances by Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Cindy Blackman-Santana (solo artist/Lenny Kravitz/Santana), and Jason Bittner (Shadows Fall/Anthrax). Named for Preservation Hall, the respected music venue in New Orleans' French Quarter, the band has performed with joy and spirit at venues like Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, and for everyone from British Royalty to the King of Thailand. Founding artists performed with the likes of Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong, and Buddy Bolden, and other members over the years have continued the tradition of passing the lessons of their music to the younger generation. Now consisting of 10 - 12 musicians, Pink Martini has performed its multilingual repertoire across the world, with orchestras including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the San Francisco Symphony, and the BBC Concert Orchestra, and at events and venues including two sold-out concerts at Carnegie Hall and the opening party of the remodeled Museum of Modern Art. World-renowned pianist, composer, and educator O’Farrill became the director of the orchestra that preserved much of the music of his father, jazz legend Chico O’Farrill in 1995. Arturo O’Farrill has developed as a solo performer with diverse artists including Dizzy Gillespie, Lester Bowie, Wynton Marsalis, and Harry Belafonte. He has also composed music for film, including “Hollywoodland” and “Salud” and recorded numerous albums, several which were Grammy nominees. O’Farrill and ALJO received the 2008 GRAMMY for “Best Latin Jazz Album” for Song for Chico. Since then, Hunter has recorded and released 19 albums and has recorded with the likes of Norah Jones, John Mayer, and D'Angelo. The guitarist has garnered recognition from fans, critics, and fellow musicians alike, as he simultaneously plays bass and rhythm/lead guitar parts on his custom-made seven-string guitar. Le Jazz Hot *Sun, Aug 11 @ 1pm San Jose Rep Stage Featuring members of The Hot Club of San Francisco, Le Jazz Hot has continually remained one of America's most daring ensembles. The band lists guitarist Django Reinhardt and violinist Stephane Grappelli among their main influences, while performing and incorporating work from other composers including Claude Debussy and Jelly Roll Morton. His charisma and the ability to move an audience has brought him to share the stage with the ranks of Wynton Marsalis, Poncho Sanchez, the Gran Combo, Natalie Cole, and Michael Miller. Dafnis Prieto Proverb Trio *Sat, Aug 10 @ 12:00pm San Jose Rep Stage Cuban-born, New York-based drummer, composer, and educator Dafnis Prieto continuously makes his mark on the Latin and jazz music scene with his revolutionary drumming techniques. Since his move to the United States in 1999, the musician has worked with artists including Henry Threadgill, Steve Coleman, and Eddie Palmieri, and performed at several national and international music festivals as both a sideman and bandleader. Performing with musical legends Chucho Valdez, Silvio Rodriguez, and Fito Paez, Terry developed a sense of musical innovation early on. After forming Columna B, an influential group of young Cuban jazz players, Terry has toured with the group throughout the United States and Europe. As a performer, producer, and composer, Hodge takes influence from everything from gospel to funk to jazz to hip-hop. His debut

album Live Today, released on Blue Note Records, showcases his versatility and melodic sensitivity, creating a sound all his own. As a film composer, Hodge has written music for several films and has performed his compositions at the Sundance Film Festival. The bassist recently appeared at the San Jose Jazz Winter Fest 2013, performing in the Robert Glasper Experiment. He worked in the late '80s and '90s with his soul/blues band The Ambassadors, and as Duke Robillard's second guitarist on his world tour. From an early age, he was strongly drawn to percussion. He began his professional musical career with the group Clave. His experience in Clave was important in his development as a percussionist; it was during this time that he experimented with using a third bongo head, or the "Tri-bongo". Exposure was beginning to get him the attention of other respected bands in Cuba. 1990 saw him begin a new stage in his career as the first bongocero for Opus 13, a band that eventually metamorphosed into Paulo y Su Elite. The band was headed by Paulo Fernandez Gallo, one of the most well recognized and respected artists in Cuban music. Caro has lived in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1996 and has become a much sought-after percussionist, working with established musicians such as Rebeca Mauleón, Anthony Blea y su Charanga, Jesus Diaz and his QBA, Grupo Malo, and Orquesta La Moderna Tradicion. He has also played with Eddie Palmieri, Pedro Brull, Luisito Carrion, Anthony Cruz, Nino Segarra, Omar Sosa and the great Paraguayan harpist Ramon Romero. In 2004, he debuted as a composer with the release of his recording Kitikimba Pa’ti, recorded with his own band, Vission Latina. Mitch Woods and His Rocket 88s have been the torchbearers of a great American blues musical heritage for three decades. Woods styled his group after the jumpin’ n’ jivin’, shoutin’ n’ honkin’ bands of Louis Jordan, Wynonie Harris, Amos Milburn, and Roy Milton. Adding a healthy dose of New Orleans R&B, pile-drivin’ piano, and Woods’ own playful lyrics, Woods and His Rocket 88s forge their own brand of music they call “rock-a-boogie.” “A joyous, wall-to-wall blast guaranteed to chase away any blues” (Philadelphia Inquirer), the 88s came together in Northern California in 1980 and quickly rose to the top of the blues club circuit. Adopting and adapting the music of the Cajuns, the Creoles added their own bluesy, rockin’ elements and called it zydeco. MotorDude Zydeco has become one of the leading exponents of this raucous style. Pelejo Seco *Sun, Aug 11, @ 4:30pm Kaiser Permanente Salsa Stage Growing up in Havana, Cuba, bandleader/composer Ivan Camblor played his tres (three string Cuban guitar) with traditional Cuban bands, many of which began performing his songs. While still in Cuba, Camblor collaborated with Edesio Alejandro on two scores for the film “Hacerse el Sueco”. Camblor moved to the United States in November 2004 and founded Pallejo Seco. He took the name of the band from a Spanish phrase meaning “raw hide.” For him the name has many meanings, one of which is to describe the dry and leathered skin of a campesino or farmer. This eclectic group has its roots in traditional Cuban music and performs only Camblor’s original compositions. The ensemble produces a creative sound that intertwines progressive fusion rock, Latin pop, Brazilian, flamenco, Afro-Cuban and jazz. The ensemble’s mission is to preserve the traditions of Latin jazz and Afro-Cuban music by teaching it to youth and to create role models for aspiring student musicians. Led by Music Director John Calloway, LJYE has shared the stage with such legends as Cuban bassist Cachao, piano virtuoso Chuchito Valdes, Latin jazz heavyweight Poncho Sanchez, and the Grammy® Award-winning Spanish Harlem Orchestra. The ensemble was chosen as one of the top youth bands at YouthQuake 2004 and won First Place (Youth Music) at Carnaval San Francisco in 2002, 2004, 2005 and 2006. Harris, a South Carolina native, is a classically trained vocalist. However, with a natural style influenced by “The Divine Miss Etta,” Diane Schuur, Gladys Knight and Aretha Franklin, she gravitated toward blues, jazz and soul. While most vocalists who cross genres tend to choose material that falls in the middle ground between them, Harris’ astonishing versatility allows her to sing the full spectrum of all three. Paula Harris may only just be making her mark on the blues scene, but she is already winning awards. Harris and her band of world-class musicians, “The Beasts of Blues,” won the Monterey Blues Festival Battle of the Bands last November. That was a warm up to the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN, where she and her group placed in the top three bands in the competition (watch out for her “Big Ass Brass”). The group released its first album in June 2012.

Comprised of musicians from 14 regional high schools, the audition-based big band and combo perform throughout the Bay Area. Samoranos, aka “Mr. Clifford,” possesses a music career that spans over thirty years as a professional guitarist, vocalist, band leader, choir director and music educator with an emphasis in jazz theory. He is a guitar instructor for the San Jose Youth Symphony’s “Music Matters” program and choir director for the San Jose Diocese at St. Martin Church in Sunnyvale. Mr. Clifford is also a traveling music teacher who currently works with over twenty schools. The students performing at this year’s Summer Fest come from Clifford’s music programs in these various schools as well as his private music studio, located in Santa Clara. Transcendental Ensemble *Sun, Aug 11 @ 6pm Blackbird Tavern Stage Transcendental Ensemble is an Afro-baroque Brasilian group. Their influences come from the sounds of candomblé, which was influenced by the novenas and other liturgical music played in Bahia’s Baroque churches, and tincoãs, the music of the streets of historic Cachoeira, in Brazil’s Reconcavo region. It is from the nexus of these influences that emerged the unique style of the group, the goal if which is to rescue old cultural expressions rooted in Bahia’s land. Their sound is also influenced by composers like Mateus Aleluia, Tranquilino Bastos, Armando Noble, Heraclitus Warrior and Estevam Moura. The work of these composers have been rarely explored in the instrumental music of Bahi,until now. Transcendental was founded by Vinicius Freitas (saxophone, flute and composer) and Jota Anderson (bass and composer), prominent musicians from Cachoeira who have played on stages the world over. The group also includes musicians Luizinho Du Gêge, Kainã Du Gêge and Gaby Guedes on percussion. Rooted in the past but clearly of our time, Transcendental Ensemble has created a unique sensory experience that authentically captures the history of their region. Bug Horn Rex *Sat, Aug 10 @ 1:30 pm Plaza de César Chavez Park Each set Bug Horn Rex plays is a stroll down Bourbon Street–their street beat of a Mardi Gras parade meshes with brass band funk and a smoky Ellington-type ballad. This group’s roots started as a Dixieland combo, and throughout the years they honed their sound as a self-described “jambalaya of New Orleans.” They performed at the New Orleans Mardi Gras in 2009, and since then have played at more local venues, including Campbell’s Boogie on the Bayou, Santana Row, Roux, Naglee Park Garage, and our very own Summer Fest. For the first time, San Jose Jazz will have a parade from Plaza de César Chavez Park to the Big Easy Stage on Saturday, August 10 at 1:30 pm, to kick off the first concert on that stage.
