This committee is expected to be representative and accountable to staff in the decision-making process. RAINA P., WYNGATE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL GINA FERA, FLOWER HILL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL I like art because it makes me feel free, and it makes me feel happy when I do it. It also makes me feel independent. Art lets me be who I am. It’s a part of me. In art class, I get to learn about other artists and what they do. They give me ideas for my own art. Mary Cassatt is my favorite artist. She makes art about babies and people. That’s what I like to make art about too. I’ve been drawing people since I was four. I’m better at drawing people than I am anything else. I’ve gotten better each year because I practice and work step by step. I learn about the art elements and design principles. These are important to help me plan out my ideas. Art is one of my favorite things to do. If I couldn’t be in art class in school, then I wouldn’t feel like I had a place to belong. When students come to art class, they have the opportunity to express themselves in meaningful ways and in a variety of media. Art education is connected to students’ cultures and also to the other subjects that they are experiencing in the classroom. Using art to explore what they are learning in other subjects generates enthusiasm among students and teachers in the school learning community. In addition, students have regular opportunities to collaborate, solve problems in creative ways, and practice flexible thinking. Art education challenges students while building confidence by providing them with regular experiences with success.
