LeCroy, a worldwide leader in serial data test solutions, creates advanced instruments thatdrive product innovation by quickly measuring, analyzing and verifying complex electronicsignals. With systems available for both physical and protocol layer testing, LeCroy offers acomplete solution to meet the high demands of Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) and Serial ATA(SATA) technologies.
Each SAS and SATA system is built with the CATCTM Protocol Analyzer System as its founda-tion for stable and reliable measurements. With interchangeable plug-ins, field upgradeablefirmware, and the ability to link multiple analyzers together for higher bandwidth applications, the CATC platform canevolve, as your protocolanalysis needs change.
The SAS and SATA SolutionThe LeCroy SAS solutions, built on
the CATC 10K platform, include both
Tracer analyzers and Trainer exercis-
ers, and can support both SAS and
SATA traffic for either 3.0 or 1.5 Gbps
speed. The SASTracer analyzer can
have up to 4 sets of connectors, for
capturing and displaying traffic from
either 2- or 4-wide port configurations,
or from up to 8 points along a complex
topology. You can also cascade multiple
systems to provide a synchronized dis-
play of SAS traffic across 8 or 16 links.
Available as an additional plug-in
module, the SASTrainer TM exerciser is
capable of transmitting a single link of
3.0 or 1.5 Gbps traffic (either SAS or
SATA), while providing one or two
recording channels. As a complete
solution, the SASTracer/Trainer system
gives you the unique ability to record
live traffic and then playback the exact
data stream using the Trainer. This
saves time in setting up the Trainer
operations and provides an easy way to
recreate problems reported in the field.
The SATA Only SolutionLeCroy also offers solutions for SATA
only. Available with 1, 2, or 4 recording
channels, the SATracer 3G analyzer
can tap between two 3.0 or 1.5 Gbps
SATA links, and supports the SATA-II
specification including SATA GEN2X
for external connections.
Capable of a single lane of 3.0
or 1.5 Gbps traffic, the SATrainer
exerciser provides both host and
target side emulation. Integrated
with the SATracer analyzer, you can
convert trace files into a script for
the Trainer in order to recreate
bus traffic.

Powerful Display ViewsAllow for Easy Analysis ofProtocol TrafficLeCroy's Tracer analysis software
gives you a variety of powerful tools
for analyzing and displaying bus traffic.
The Tracer software makes it easy
for you to view all elements of a
command, even if they are spread
over several different physical links,
helping you understand traffic flow
and ensure devices are behaving
correctly at the protocol level.
The SASTracer analyzer records all
the data on the link. Unfiltered SAS
traffic contains tens of thousands of
frames and primitives, which can make
it extremely difficult for you to analyze
and discover errors within the data.
Within the CATC TraceTM software
display, you can preserve the detail,
but also have an easy way to view the
traffic hierarchically.
For instance, you can:
• Isolate the view to just the transport
layer by clicking on the TRANS icon.
This narrows down the display to the
transport layer of the protocol, where
each bi-directional exchange of info-
mation is represented as a discrete
transaction making it easier for you
to see the exchange of information
between the initiator and target.
• Decode up to the application layer
by selecting the SCSI icon. This
decodes the SCSI command layer,
and shows the addresses of the
devices involved, the tag, the
LUN, the type of command plus
performance metrics that the
software calculates.
Although the CATC Trace display is
ideal for showing traffic at the logical
level, it is often necessary to drill
down to the byte level and see traffic
across multiple lanes on a common
timescale. The Link TrackerTM software
display provides this view, and allows
you to see the low level primitives
and 32-bit data structures in hex,
scrambled hex, or decoded with the
field names displayed.
For more advanced analysis, another
view available to you is the Frame
TrackerTM software display. This view
shows each exchange of information
in a separate cell while preserving the
spatial relationship of traffic that is
moving across multiple links.
Within each of these displays, Tooltips
pop up to provide you with detailed
descriptions of the field, including
information about the SAS or SATA
specification. At the higher layers,
valuable performance metrics are
calculated for each operation such as
the number of frames in a sequence
or the throughput and latency of a
command. This helps you identify
possible problems at the lower levels.

Powerful Triggering and FilteringAs the protocol evolves and moves fromprototypes to system level testing, triggeringbecomes more important since problemsfrom linking devices is more intermittent. The Tracer software provides the ability toselect simple triggers on typical events, like out of band signals, SCSI operations, primitives, hashed addresses or SCSIstatus. Triggers can be set up on almostany sequence of events possible; it supportsup to 256 levels or sequential states, withsix events per level. It also allows you toisolate the important part of the trafficstream, and when you open the trace, itjumps right to that portion of the trace.
Comprehensive Traffic Reportsand SummariesOur SAS and SATA solutions are more
than just data recorders. The real value
is in the analysis of the data. The Tracer
software generates detailed reports that
provide statistics on the occurrence of errors,
primitives, frames, commands and other
protocol events within the trace. You can
evaluate these metrics at a glance or use
them to navigate through the recording.
The traffic summary can be printed or saved
to text with a single keystroke.
In this example, SASTracer filters out all ALIGNand NOTIFY primitives; If OPEN_ADDRESS istransmitted and OPEN ACCEPT or OPENREJECT is not received within 1.00ms, thenthe analyzer (Open Time-out violation) triggers.
LeCroy’s Drag and Dropgraphical interfacemakes sophisticatedtriggering easy.
Click on Register Host-to-DeviceFIS to automatically jump througheach occurrence within the trace.

Search Results QuicklyThe advanced search features in the Tracer software helps
you quickly find what you want. By using the Quick Search,
you can select fields right from the drop down menu, such
as Go To Trigger or Event, or directly to a specific marker or
time stamp in the trace. The Go To feature provides a simple
way to search for SAS or SATA specific items within the
trace, such as SSP frames or specific primitives.
The advanced Find lets you search on specific SCSI
parameters like the Initiator Address or Tag Value of a
SCSI operation. Using the Find dialog, you can chose
your selection criteria and create a new trace file that
represents only the data you seek.
OOB (Out of Band) Decoding LevelAn OOB icon allows the CATC Trace View to show
combined OOB scenarios (establishing link, speed
negotiation, etc.) in one simplified and integrated view.
These scenarios typically occur at power on and after
hardware resets as devices initialize and initiate
communications.
SAS Compliance Verification and TestingAvailable as part of the SASTrainer exerciser for no additional
cost, the Compliance Test Suite (CTS) provides you with
a library of scripts for testing initiator, target and expander
device compliance. CTS addresses portions of the protocol
that establish connections, perform discovery, manage
arbitration, as well as perform error recovery at the SSP
transport level. In addition, source code is included that
allows you to adapt this substantial test bed to create
custom scripts for your own specific applications. CTS can
help you uncover latent SAS compliance problems before
a device or system enters production.
Precise control overOut of Band (OOB)burst and interval timing.
Connect command:Automatically responds toOOB and speed negotiationto bring up link.
Include files: Define primitivesand frames once and re-use asyou create alternate versionsof scripts.
Byte-level control over frameheader and payload.
Intelligent search savesyou time by only presentingselections that actuallyoccur in the trace.
