The capacity crowd was not only treated to some incredible art, but also to some very professional

entertainment.

Emerson music teacher, Diane Anderson brought her amazing drummers.

The Emerson choir was also a big hit.

There was not a dry eye in the house when Edison’s Zion brought the house down with his rendition of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah”. Malgorzata Ceglinsak taught her guitarists very well.

Tina Clark’s Garfield choir sang like angels.

S.T.A.R Award Our art teacher at Whittier, Leah Mitchell, was

awarded the S.T.A.R. award.

Artsy Stories The foremost expert on color, Joseph Albers, was in another city for a speaking engagement when he realized he did not pack a neck tie. He dashed

to a haberdasher (pun intended) and began sorting through them. A sales person tried to help

him match a tie to the suit he was wearing but Albers brushed him off. When he found the tie he wanted, he went to pay for it and was met with a

condescending face. The sales person said, not knowing to whom he was talking, “Sir, you have

absolutely no eye for color”.

Frank Lloyd Wright once was in court testifying. He was asked to state his name and profession. Wright responded, “Frank Lloyd Wright, world’s greatest architect.” When he sat down his wife asked, “Do you think that was an appropriate thing to say?” Wright responded, “My Dear, I was under oath.”

ART Among US A new mural at Garfield created by the artists the

Taiwanese Artist Vicky Ross’s Herrera art students were invited

program. Our sister city, Taipei, sent a delegation to Phoenix, and our students

whowed their appreciation by giving them gifts of their own artwork.

Herrera students were given gifts from Taiwan including a medal, some art supplies and Chinese candies.

Goodbye and Good Luck – It is Never Easy

We are so very sad to see our friends leave us. Herrera art teacher, Vicky Ross is off to other parts of the world. Dunbar art teacher, Carrie Biesel, is leaving to create her magnificent jewelry. Kaitlyn Youngs will depart from Heard where she has been an integral member of our art team. Patricia “Trish” Martin, is off to adventures with Jean Michel Cousteau, son of Oceanographer, Jacques Cousteau, aboard the Calypso. She will also be taking some underwater trips in their mini-submarine. Ms Martin was chosen to do paintings and drawings of undersea life. Her work will be exhibited in Paris and in Cousteau’s birthplace, St. Andre-de-Cubzac, France. Tyler Novak will say goodbye to Magnet Traditional for other adventures.

2017-18: Where Have We Been and What Have

We Done? Our young artists exhibited their work at the AZ State Capitol in celebration of Dr. Martin Luther

King Jr.’s birthday and the Civil Rights Movement. We continue the tradition of being the

only school district asked to participate in this event.

School Psychologist Week was met with displays in the front offices of most of our schools.

Dia De Los Mueretos was celebrated in a big way by Vicky Ross’s students with an exhibition at the

Musical Instrument Museum.

In October, we celebrated Native American Heritage month with an exhibition at Emerson Court.

An Evening with Jackson Pollock at the FOUND:RE Hotel was a smash hit. Helen

Harrison, Director of the Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center in New York, flew in to speak at

the exhibition. Two of our students now have artwork in the museum at The Pollock-Krasner

House.

Young Arts Arizona showed the work of our students in three exhibitions. The Kenilworth students of

Lauren Feldman and Kyle Novak’s MTS students were featured in an exhibition. On our last stop of the

year will be May 4 at YAA in which all of our schools will be represented. All are invited to attend

this exhibition.

Salon Des Enfants, the greatest children’s art exhibition in the history of the universe, turned 25

this year and as always it was held at Alwun House.

Several of our schools again participated in the Lion’s Club International Peace Poster contest.

e.

Our multi-talented students donated artwork to representatives of a delegation from Taiwan.

Students from Herrera will have been invited to an exhibition of a Taiwanese artist at City Hall.

The Art Of Teaching

Where do our students get their talent? From their dedicated art teachers, some of whom had solo

exhibitions of their own work at Emerson Court. Featured this year were MTS art teacher, Tyler

Novak, Art Dept. Lead, John Avedisian, Bethune art teacher, Rosa Wilno, Vicky Ross from Herrera and

Patricia Martin from Garfield. Rounding out the field was a show by Shaw art teacher Miyuki Ketchum.

More murals went up at Capitol and Garfield. An art garden is being completed by Crystal Conover

and her students from Capitol, and Miyuki Ketchum has a permanent display of ceramic art

in the gardens at Shaw.
