• Sarnano is a town in the Province of Macerata, only 38 Km far from it. It is situated on a hill on the right of Tennacola river,at the foot of Sibillini Mountains.• The name Sarnano comes from the Latin “Sarnus”, indicating the owner of the
territory. The origin of Sarnano goes back to an allotment of land belonging to the veterans of Augustus. Many elements then led to the occupation by the Lombards, but the birth of Sarnano as a free town came in the XIII century when it freed itself from the rule of the Brunforte.
From this period, almost all the heart of the historical centre remains intact. Under the influence of the Varano of Camerino , the Church subsequently reabsorbed Sarnano until the annexation of the Marche region to the kingdom of Italy.
• Nowdays Sarnano is a bath and a well known winter resort with its ski slopes and skilifts, recently renowned. Moreover, the possibility of walks and excursions in the nearby mountains and in the Sibillini park , the tourist facilities, both sporting and recreational , make the area a pleasant holiday resort.

Sarnano is one of the few towns in the Marche which preserves the medieval town centre almost untouched. The urban structure is that of a “Castrum”, a fortified town which, with its narrow spiral streets, goes down from the “Piazza Alta” to the foot of the hill. In the Piazza Alta rises the church of S. Maria Assunta. Built in the second half of the XIII century, the church is overhung with a bell tower , built a century later. The facade is adorned with a white stone portal richely sculpted. Inside there are many important works by Nicolò Alunno, Pietro Alemanno and other famous artists. Other municipal buildings flank the Square: the “Palazzo del Popolo” transformed in a theatre in 1831, the “Palazzo dei Priori” and the “Palazzo del Podestà”. A bit below there is the renovated Church of S. Francis built in the XIV century. Next to it the Art Gallery with very interesting works such as a Madonna by Crivelli. The nearby Library houses thousands of volumes, among them some manuscripts of the XIII-XV century and valuable, rare incunabula. www.comune.sarnano.mc.it www.aptsarnano.it
