  • Discover these ten amazing paintings hiding in the school grounds! How many can you find?!

The paintings are from the Swindon Collection of Modern British Art. There are over 600

artworks in the Collection! They are looked after by Swindon Museum and Art Gallery. Some of

them are by very famous artists and are very expensive! The artworks are owned by Swindon

Borough Council, but they belong to all of us! You can see them for free in the Gallery!

    Art Trail Explorers

The best thing about art?..... ...is that we all see it differently. Nobody knows what a painting is really about, except the artist!

So you can think anything you like abut a piece of art! There are no right answers!

Morris visited Petticoat Lane Market in

London and decided to paint a picture

of his visit. He wanted to show the

energy of the market and the colour of

the fruit and vegetable stalls. He also

    included a famous Swindon actress

called Diana Dors. She was his girlfriend.

Can you find Diana Dors in the painting?!

Girl Selling Flowers by Desmond Morris1. 2. Bright Intervals by Edward Wadsworth

Wadsworth served in the Royal Navy

during World War 1. His job was to paint

    dazzle camouflage on warships to

confuse the enemy. He continued to use

boats and the sea as subjects in his

later work. This Still Life painting shows

objects used by fishermen and sailors.

Can you identify all the objects?

    3. Ship Amid Tall Waves by Alfred WallisWallis was a Cornish fisherman. He did

not train as an artist, but liked to paint the

boats he saw around him. Artists from the St

Ives School, a famous group of artists working

in Cornwall in the 1920s and 30s, discovered

some of his paintings and began to tell the

world abut him. Despite his new-found fame,

Wallis continued to use simple materials and

to paint simply. This piece was painted on

    cardboard from the local greengrocers!

Can anyone be an artist? Who gets to decide?

    6. Gramophone by Howard Hodgkin

    4. Studland Bay - A Black Sea Coast by Roger Fry

    5. One Night Only by Allen Jones

    7. CatPeople Collage #4 by Monster Chetwynd

In 1911, Fry travelled by steamship along the

coast of the Black Sea in Turkey. When he

returned home, he painted this picture of

Studland Bay in Dorset. He has made it

look like some of the landscapes he saw on

his holiday by using warm colours.

Which landscape would you like to paint?

Jones is a pop artist. Pop Art began in the

1950s & 60s, and took its ideas from

popular culture like comic books and the

products people bought in shops. Jones

also likes to make sculptures, Elton John

once owned one of his sculptures!

What do you think this painting shows?

From the age of five, Hodgkin wanted to

be a painter. 48 years later, he won the

Turner Prize for his art (the biggest

prize in art) ! This painting shows two

friends in a room listening to music on a

gramophone. Hodgkin has tried to show

what it was like to be there - how he

    felt and how it sounded.

What type of music do you think the friends were listening to?

    Born as Alalia

    Chetwynd in

    1973, the artist

    changed her

    name to

    Spartacus and

    then Marvin

    Gay, before

    finally settling

    on Monster

    in 2018!

This artwork is a collage made from

photocopies of pictures from library books.

Chetwynd also makes performance art and

in 2012 was runner-up for the Turner Prize

    (the biggest prize in art).

What would you change your name to?!

The best thing about art?..... ...is that we all see it differently. Nobody knows what a painting is really about, except the artist!

So you can think anything you like abut a piece of art! There are no right answers!

    10. Mr and Mrs Aerobot and Babybot by David Bent

    9. Back of the Granary, Poland by Robert Bevan

    8. Landlocked by James Quin

In 1897, Bevan married a Polish artist,

Stanislawa de Karlowska, and together they

often visited her family farm in central

Poland. While there, Bevan spent his time

painting views around the farm, like this one.

He liked to experiment with colour.

Audiences at the time were sometimes

shocked at how bright and bold his paintings

were! He travelled widely in France and Spain

and was inspired by many artists there.

Which people and places inspire you?

Quin is a British artist who says he is interested in

'the strangeness of the world'! He likes to play with

ideas of time and space. In his art, nothing is quite

what it seems! Before making his paintings, he often

makes drawings first. He uses the inside covers of

second hand books as a sketchbook, and now

    owns thousands of them!

Why do you think Quin has given this painting the title 'Landlocked'?

Lots of Bent's work is made up of painting and

drawing, but this artwork is a photo-collage. It was

made on a computer by putting together lots of

individual photographs of aeroplanes! Many of the

photos were taken by standing looking at the front of

the plane. Tip - turn your head 90 degrees!

Bent worked as Artist-in-Residence for the Red Arrows

in 2007. The Red Arrows are pilots who perform

    acrobatics in aeroplanes!

How many different aeroplane parts can you find in this collage?
