Velasco Vitali’s famous dog sculptures, from wax to glazed bronze. Skilled artisans from the Battaglia Artistic Foundry in Milan reveal the ancient traditions of bronze sculpture making, unchanged since the 6th century B.C. Historic Italian sculptor Giacomo Manzù used to say that the sculpture is a hand gesture, a gesture of love. According to Professor Larry Shiner, «Art, as we understand it normally, is a European invention of just two centuries ago. Involving many hands and many minds, art, however, has always been a matter of collaboration».

“BOB WILSON’S LIFE & DEATH OF MARINA ABRAMOVIC” follows the coming together of director Robert Wilson, performance artist Marina Abramovic, singer/composer Antony Hegarty and actor Willem Dafoe to create the experimental opera based on the biography of Marina Abramovic. Through rehearsal footage and interviews with the artists as they are making the piece, we get an insight into this unique collaboration. It’s an intimate portrait that reveals the dynamics, excitement and insecurities of making such a poetic and visually stunning work of art for the stage.

Investigating Leonardo’s heritage means knowing the significance that his thought and work have for some of the most distinguished representatives of the cultural panorama of our time. The film wants to discover the relevance and the fascination that Leonardo has had, and still continues to communicate, to architects, scientists, mathematicians, man of letters and artists.

A gigantic statue as a political manifesto. The year is 1501. Michelangelo, aged 26, is in Rome to sculpt St. Peter’s Pietà. He is asked to make a large statue of David in Florence. Michelangelo returns to his native city, works in great secrecy, and after three years delivers his marble giant, over five meters in height. On the 8th of September, 1504 there is great rejoicing in Piazza della Signoria when the statue is erected in front of the Palazzo Vecchio.

Flavio Bucci, who played the artist Ligabue in a 1980 Rai mini-series, narrates this documentary, taking us to the sites where the painter lived, while setting the stage for interviews with experts who delve into topics such as the value of Ligabue’s art, his mental illness and the events of his life. Mr. Bucci also dramatises exchanges with his double in the TV movie, as well as with images of the real-life Ligabue, all to the backdrop of library footage that sets the mood of Ligabue’s times.

Diabolik, the King of Terror of Italian comics, was created by two sisters from Milan’s upper crust: Angela and Luciana Giussani. Starting in the early 60’s, they not only broke all the accepted rules for action heroes, but also faced numerous censorship charges for showing a criminal in a positive light. Undaunted, the sisters forged ahead with their groundbreaking stories, paying close attention to current issues and taking sides, as when they recommended that their readers vote no in a 1974 referendum to abrogate divorce.
