Friends,

With the dog days of summer soon to be behind us I can’t help butget enthused about our inaugural Heart of the Arts Festival beinglaunched this October. With over 40 arts and educational organizationsalready signed up with numerous events and more coming on each day,it looks like we are on track to make the first HOT Arts Festival a rousing success! The Polk Arts Alliance and all of the participating organizations have been working diligently towards building a premier event during which we will showcase the many and varied arts offerings within Polk County. PAA is extremely grateful to the Polk Advertising Federation for their generous contribution of expertise with the creation of our new festival logo and all the media materials needed to market the festival. Polk County is extremely fortunate to have an ambitious and talented group of artists, in a wide variety of disciplines, who share a common bond in recognizing the valuable experience the arts provide for residents and visitors alike.

October is National Arts & Humanities month and as such, PAA recognizes an opportunity to collaborate andbe a part of a national initiative to bring awareness andhighlight all that Polk arts organizations offer and at the same time support the arts. During October, I want to encourage everyone to make an effort to get out and support our vast and varied Polk Art organizations and the Heart of the Arts Festival. From Davenport to Ft. Meade and from Frostproof

to Lakeland I’m confident you will find something that appeals to your inner artist and at the same time allows you to see firsthand how the Cultural Arts make living in Polk County such a wonderful and enriching experience. Mike LaPan

As we enter a new fall season,we begin with an abundance of events, venues and new beginnings. It’s an exciting time to be in Polk County! The season will feature: launching the Heart of the ArtsFestival, a new school year filled with talented and eager students participating in the National Arts and Humanities month, to name a few. And, of course we are excited

about the opening of Legoland, bringing creative jobs, family-oriented programs and increased tourism to Polk County. As the county arts agency representing the Cultural Arts Council, I’m excited to have so much to work with as we strive to market and enhance our image and brand our county and communities as a leading cultural destination in the heart of Florida. It has often been said that there is nothing going on in Polk County. Wrong! As you browse the calendar of events in this publication or visit our event web site (www.polkarts.org) it is obvious there is not enough time to get to it all, but what fun it will be to try! This summer I was honored and thrilled to receive a framed license plate from the Kids Tag Art program. I have been involved in this incredible program created by Joe Tedder and the Tax Collectors office that has grown and expanded to other counties in support of the arts and its importance in education. Created to generate

proceeds that go back into the schools for art supplies, the Kids Tag Art program is enter-ing its sixth successful year and has become a right of passage for 5th grade students. As the 5th grade student from

North Lakeland Elementary who created this arts plate says so well “ Art Rules!” Yes, it does! It is a proven fact that the creative process and the arts helps us expand thinking, connects us to our collec-tive past, celebrates our humanity, is critical to prepare our students for the 21st century workforce andsustains our future. Art and culture are the fabric of any community. As mega-billionaire Eli Broady stated soeloquently, “Communities are not defined by theirbanks or businesses but by their cultural arts.” I lookforward to celebrating and promoting our vast cultural selections and venues, the amazing talent we offer and the enhancements to our community as we create Polkas “A Destination for the Arts!”

Haines City Community Theatre ispleased to announce the following plays

for their upcoming 2011-2012 season.

Nov. 11-20, 2011: “Goodbye Charlie” by George Axelrod. In this knockabout farce by the author of “The Seven Year Itch” we meet Charlie who was a cad and a womanizer, with a foul mouth and a taste for booze. When he is killed high-

tailing it from a lover’s husband’s yacht, Charlie “returns” as a woman and gets a second chance at life and love.

Feb. 10-19, 2012: “Being of Sound Mind” by Brian J. Burton. John and Susan Pearson have rented their usual holiday cottage in France while Susan recovers from a nervous breakdown. But when John leaves to buy ciga-rettes, Susan‘s confusion and terror begins, starting with the appearance of a man who says he is John. Is Susan “of sound mind“? This thriller will keep the audience guessing every step of the way.

April 13-22, 2012: “The Hallelujah Girls” by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope, and Jamie Wooten. Hilarity abounds in this comedy written by the authors of “The Dixie Swim Club” when the feisty females of Eden Falls, Georgia, decideto open up a day spa in an abandoned church. Led by the high-spirited Sugar Lee, the women must rally together to overcome all their obstacles and launch their new and improved lives. The result is a side-splitting, joyful comedy that will make you laugh out loud and shout “Hallelujah!”

June 15-24, 2012: “A Pirate’s Life for Me” by Craig Sodaro, music and lyrics by Bill Francoeur. In the annual HCCT KIDS! production, the younger talents of Haines City Community Theatre will once again entertain audiences of all ages with this musical centering around Aristocrat Roger Goodman and his true love Sarah Huffington. While Roger has his heart set on a conventional life married to the wealthy Sarah, he soon finds out she thinks he’s boring and would rather marry a brave and adventurous pirate! Determined to prove himself to his beloved, Roger hires Long John Sliver to tutor him and his newly recruited motley crew in the field of piracy. What ensues is nothing short of a comedy of errors, enlivened with an eclectic musical score of rollicking sea shanties and contemporary styles. This swashbuckling comedy is sure to be the most comical musical adventure yet!

Harrison School of the Arts Student Joshua Veasey’sWork on Display in Washington DC

Washington expresses its appreciation for art in a yearlong exhibition that includes work from various young artists throughout the country, one of whom is Joshua Veasey, a student at Harrison School of the Arts. His piece entitled Dwelling represents one of only 25 total works from Florida artists selected as winners from the national Con-gressional Art Competition. To view Dwelling, a colorful depiction of Lake Mirror with abstract qualities, visit the following url:

The Congressional Art Competition, formed in 1982, is an annual opportunity for high schoolartists throughout the nation to have their work on display for a year in Washington D.C. The aimof the competition is to recognize up and coming artists throughout the nation and celebratecreativity in every congressional district. Since the competition’s inception in the early 1980’s,the program has helped bring recognition to over 650,000 high school artists nationwide.

With Congress and the White House engaged in unyielding confrontations, when our economy is on the brink of default, the housing market in chaos, the issue of gay marriage rankling some and the idea of legalizing marijuana creating clouds of steam, it seems time to issue a smile or two. With the Tea Party wishing to throw Social Security overboard while the price of gas has some of us wanting to jump overboard, with unemployment higher than Timothy Leary and our CD interest rates lower than Charlie Sheen’s ratings, it seems time to search for some silliness. Laughter is indeed the natural high. There’s a gabillion jokes out there, daily provided by the Internet, the talk shows and the antics of US congressmen and other boffo persona. After all, we would be so much unhappier if the bigger just don’t get smaller on occasion. Anyway, the world of theatre has its own bag of boners. Sometimes I just have to read them to forget the stress. Enjoy the below--especially since we won’t be enjoying any political politeness for awhile.

THE ACTOR• Actors are props with dialogue.• The most important thing in acting is honesty. If you can fake

that, you’ve got it made.• An actor is a self made man who adores his maker. On his last

birthday he e-mailed a note of congratulations to his parents.

• John Wilkes Booth should have shot an actor• The key to the best acting is surprise--never let your fellow

actors know what you’re going to do.• A young actress once confided to Lauren Bacall that she

never had stage fright before going on stage. Bacall promptly answered: “Don’t worry, it comes with talent.”

• How many actors does it take to change a light bulb? All of them. One to do it and the rest to talk about how much better they could have done it.

THE DIRECTOR• Directors are props with clipboards.• Do what the director tells you to do. Then do it the right way.• There are two kinds of directors - the ones who think they’re

God and the ones who are certain of it.• How many directors does it take to screw in a light bulb? None.

Give a note to the stage manager to screw it in.

THE PRODUCTION• Plays are props with actors.• Signs (almost) posted in various lobbies:

~ WARNING: In Act III there is full frontal nudity, but not involving the actor you came to see. ~ WARNING: Owning to a typographical error, the Times review of this play omitted the word “horrible.” ~ One more for giggles: People who do not find plays about incurable bone disease entertaining should probably go home right now.

• In the first act the audience had to imagine there was scenery. In the second act they were asked to imagine there were props. By Act III the actors were asked to imagine there was an audience.

• How many producers does it take to screw in a light bulb? None. Why do we need another light bulb?

BACKSTAGE BANTER• If we could read minds we wouldn’t need headsets.• Dress rehearsal: a rehearsal that becomes a whole new

ball game as actors attempt to maneuver among the 49

objects that the set designer added at 7:30 that evening.• The stage manager is a rebel without applause. The stage

crew screws for money.• How many stage managers does it take to screw in a light

bulb? I DON’T CARE. JUST DO IT!!!

THE COMMUNITY THEATRE• You know you work at a community theatre if you have a

Frequent Shopper card at The Salvation Army.• A community theatre is a place where your kids know your

lines better than you do. …or your kids SAY your lines better than you do.• Does your sofa spend more time on stage than you do? …and the audience recognizes you because they saw you

taking out the trash before the show.• And last---You probably played a drunk opposite someone

who really was...• Remember: It’s only Community Theatre until it offends

someone... then it’s “ART!”

So, how many audience members does it take to screw in a light bulb at Theatre Winter Haven?28,721 last season.

Hope you’ll enjoy the humor we have for you this season--see you at THE FULL MONTY September 15-October 9.

Platform Art held a farewell celebration in honor of founder Ann Wilson at The Red Door Wine Market on Monday, June 20. Ann has moved to Portland, Oregon. Polk State College art professor Vilas Tonape helped send Ann off in Platform Art style by creating her portrait in pastel. Revelers were given an “Ann Fan” (a fan made with Ann’s headshot) to hold up at the precise time during the festivities. Ann will be missed.

Ann founded Platform Art in 2003 after visiting an event spearheaded by her son and creatives in San Francisco to fill a void in community-based arts events for adults, specifically those with multi-disciplinary focus. Platform Art showcases regional and emerging talent in the fields of visual arts, film, fashion, sound and performance.

Florida Dance Theatre celebrates the holidays with its annual classic performances of “The Nutcracker” at the Polk Theatre on December 10 and 11. Special morning student performances take place on Thursday and Friday, December 8-9. Open auditions for the performance are on September 17th, for dance roles which include the party scene, soldiers, mice, sheep, and of course, Mother Ginger and her children. The young dancers chosen have the unique opportunity to work closely with the professional dancers of Florida Dance Theatre and to experience the hard work, discipline, and dedication necessary for a successful production. It is a wonderful and exciting learning experience as well as a great chance to perform. For some, this may be the only time they get to perform for a live audience and to appreciate the feeling of a job well done.

Florida Dance Theatre, Polk County’s only professional dance company and training academy, is proud to announce that it will be moving into a new, larger facility in January 2012. The building, which is owned by the Saxena family, is located on the corner of Lake Wire Drive and Pine Street. Lunz Prebor Fowler Architects is creating the plans to completely renovate the building specifically to meet the needs of FDT. The new facility includes three studios, the largest of which will have tiered seating for performances. Additionally, the building will have dressing rooms, an office area, a loft storage area and an outdoor

patio that could be enclosed in the future. This new, larger building will accommodate the growing demand for FDT’s training and allow us to stage more frequent performances by our professional dancers. To purchase needed equipment for the new building, Florida Dance Theatre is embarking upon a capital campaign to raise funds for the expansion. Items needed include mirrors, marley and sprung dance flooring, sound equipment, stage lighting, furniture and other materials not included in the build-out. For more information about this exciting expansion or for sponsorship opportunities contact us at [email protected]

In its 46th year, the Imperial Symphony Orchestra will present an excitingseason of magic for music lovers under the baton of Music Director andConductor, Mark Thielen. The five Masterworks concerts are designed to casta spell over the audience with works chosen from old masters, such as Liszt,Schubert, and Tchaikovsky and newer masters, such as Lloyd-Webber andRutter. Season tickets range from $48 to $180. As of this past season, the Boardof Directors of the ISO has made the series FREE for all full-time students; thosebeing 12 and under, however, must be accompanied by an adult.

Following a long tradition, the ISO will also give their Pops Concert in October,FREE to the public, in Munn Park. This popular concert brings several thousandpeople, laden with blankets, folding chairs, food and libations, to relax on thegrass and listen to the ISO weave its magic of well-known popular numbers. This is our greatest age-range concert with spectators from babies in prams togreat- grandparents in wheelchairs!

Of increasing popularity is the music-enrichment program, Tea and Symphony, which takes place the Tuesday one week before each Masterworks concert.Sitting in the musicians' chairs in their rehearsal room and sipping a glass ofwine (or tea) and eating hors d'oeuvres, those attending are treated to anengaging talk, given by Maestro Thielen, on the life, times, and music of thecomposers who will be featured in the following week's concert. Mark Thielenenables the audience there to know how to listen to and what to look for in theup-coming concert. The cost of Tea and Symphony is $15 each time at the dooror can be included with a series subscription for $10 each.

Begun as a concert for children many years ago by Publix Supermarket Charities, theCookie Concert has become a concert popular with all ages. This April 15th concertat Sikes Hall at the Lakeland Center will take place at 3 pm with pre-concert activitiesfor children beginning at 2 pm. Mark your calendars now for this FREE concert.

Not advertised to the public but of the greatest importance to our community, theISO School Day Concerts will take place in December and March. The ISO givesfour FREE concerts in these two months for children in the fourth and fifth grades.A total of about 9,000 children are exposed to live, orchestral music, most for thefirst time. Conductor Thielen weaves his magic over the students, who sit spell-bound while he introduces them to the different "families" of musicalinstruments. The ISO then performs for them, much of it familiar to the earbut not to the eye of the beholder. It is through this program thatstudents decide that they would love to play an instrument andare eager to sign up for band or orchestra in middle school.

At the other end of the spectrum is A Night at the Opera, the ISO's 11thopera fund-raiser. This year's opera, The Barber of Sevilleby Rossini,

is one of the world's most popular operas and one of the few comic operas. Eachyear, world-class opera singers are hired for the principal roles, and the secondaryroles are made up chiefly of the Florida Southern College's opera department andcommunity members. Our guest conductor is James Caraher, from theIndianapolis Opera Company. This fully-staged opera with the Imperial SymphonyOrchestra will be presented on January 21, 2012 at Branscomb Auditorium.

To learn more about this exciting season, call the ISO office at 863-688-3743 or visitour website: www.imperialsymphony.org.

CelebratetheArtsinOctoberEvery day the Polk Arts Alliance and Polk’s

cultural arts organizations celebrate the arts, but October is a month to commemorate the arts in a big way. It is National Arts and Humanities Month—the largest annual celebration for the arts and humanities in the nation!

National Arts and Humanities Month is celebrated to encourage all Americans to explore new facets of the arts and humanities in their lives, and to begin a lifelong habit of active participation in the arts and humanities.

AttendActivitiesinOctoberforaChancetoWinParticipate in the arts activities in October for a chance to win great “ARTS” prizes! The rules are easy. Look for the Heart of the Arts Festival Logo at the venues of the activities listed below in our October calendar. Provide your contact information only one time at each activity. The more activities you experience, the more opportunities you have to win.

Support&SponsorsThe Heart of the Arts Festival is possible through the heartfelt effort and dedication of Polk County’s cultural arts organizations and the generosity of the Polk County Advertising Federation (AdFed). This year, the AdFed adopted the Polk Arts Alliance Heart of the Arts Festival as a service project. This summer and fall Polk’s AdFed members have generously provided countless hours, creative talent and advertising to support the Festival and we are truly grateful. Many thanks to the Polk County AdFed members, including: Bob Milligan, Bright House, Citrus Connection, Dual Brain, Innovative Solutions, The Ledger and WONN/WPCV/WLKF/WWRZ Radio.

What do you have when you combine the scenic shoreline of Lake Eloise; add beautiful flowers, a water-skiing show, and hoop-skirted Southern Belles? The Fall 2011 calendar at the Polk County Historical Museum includes a new exhibit, “A Glimpse Back at Cypress Gardens.” The exhibit will open October 4th, 2011. Cypress Gardens opened January 2, 1936, and later grew to a 200-acre park that in 1963 attracted 1.5 million visitors and a reptutation as the most successful swamp in America. Dick Pope was fondly known as the “Swami of the Swamp.” The Polk County Historical Museum, in partnership with Florida Southern College’s Lawton Chiles Center for Florida History, has assembled a colorful array of memorabilia and photographs to offer museum visitors a look back at the history of Cypress Gardens. The exhibit will be featured at the Polk County Historical Museum through December 3, 2011, as part of the year-long celebration of Polk’s 150th year.

Polk County’s art teachers have found a creative way to grow innovative minds while also aug-menting their program budgets to teach classroom art. Into its 6th year now, the Polk County Kids Tag Art program continues to expand it program base, not only throughout Polk but also now into Highlands County as well. And, as this very popular project gains traction in the neighboring county to the south, sponsors have lined up to become involved in this innovative and stimulating program that teaches the ins and outs of what professional artists must consider when designing specialty plates for cars. Southern Homes is this year’s major sponsor, along with other dedicated, returning sponsors Douglass Screen Printers, Polk Education Foundation, and Alphagraphics. Southern Homes, Drum-mond Company and the law offices of Vecchio, Carrier and Feldman, PA, are the newest sponsors to join the fun and their sponsorships this year will bring even greater value to the program with expanded product offerings and scholarships for the first time this year. Kids Tag Art helps teachers connect the dots between inspiring creativity in kids and nurturing successful, innovative young leaders. Kids Tag Art is a school art program originating here in Polk County by the Tax Collector’s Office that inspires fifth grade art students to learn about and design their own specialty plate art and in the process, raises supplemental monies for classroom art sup-plies. The Tax Collector’s Office has hosted Kids Tag Art for the past 5 years and to date, over $89,000 has been raised for classroom art supplies. “Our museum partners state that the artwork continues to get better every year, not just tag art, but other artwork submissions throughout the year. This suggests that our program is making a last-ing impact on the quality of instruction and student achievement,” stated Joe Tedder, Tax Collector for Polk County. Enthusiastic board members of Kids Tag Art prepare the guideline materials and participating Polk County 5th grade art teachers are responsible for selecting their own themes, using their own choice of medium, and assisting their students in designs that are best suited for tag art. Teachers are included in the judging and are invited to submit the five top designs from their school. Artwork is submitted to Polk Museum of Art, who selects two students’ art for every school which will be rep-resented on the traveling Kids Tag Art Exhibit for the year. Parents, family and friends can enjoy the opportunity to promote their child’s unique artwork by purchasing a screen-printed plastic tag for the front bumpers of cars, wall plaques or holiday gift-giving and the money raised goes back into each participating schools’ art programs. Any child’s design may be purchased and made into a vanity tag for $15 through the schools. This is likely the only opportunity that most parents will have to purchase their student’s tag art. After this date, only designs receiving the Awards of Distinction designation will be available for purchase on the website for $28 plus tax and postage. Parents of fifth graders should inquire with their student’s school regarding ordering student tag art. The deadline for purchasing their child’s artwork is October 7, 2011. Order forms may be obtained from each school’s art teacher now. In November, winning designs will be posted online at www.PolkTaxes.com where tags may be purchased by the general public.

SOCIAL NETWORKING & THE ARTSIn this incredibly interesting time of social media, we have found aremarkable tool to not only announce, but to discuss events with ourpatrons. Engaging them in conversation and keeping them constantlyinformed is a huge advance in getting people in theatre seats and thebonus .... It’s free! Social networking coupled with print media is apowerful recipe for executing a successful marketing strategy.

In today’s ‘marketing’ world, it is commonplace to hear buzz words like brand, engage, connect and network. A company today cannot ignore the technology that allows us, almost effortlessly, to accomplish those things. Embracing this new and powerful way to connect your events with youraudience is vital for arts organizations to exceed expectations of success.

Recently, in an article written for the Huffington Post by Michael Kaiser,Executive Director at The Kennedy Center, he discusses anothercomponent of this electronic age. He pontificates whether or not thisimmediate gratification with electronic devices i.e. iPads, iPods, smart phones, etc... is injurious to the performing arts. It does beg the question...Is this one of the reasons why hugely popular shows are not selling outtheir houses? Is the ability for people to tune into any YouTube video or film, right in the palm of their hand, hurting this industry? Perhaps it is time toredefine the business of performing arts as we have known it. By using these very resources available to us, we can go straight to the source and ask our patrons those questions. We can make changes based on feedback it would have taken weeks or even months to gather in just moments.

A Timeto Remember

The program includes quotations from memorial words and searching questions, which were posted on churches, walls and fences surrounding Ground Zero. These were posted in the days and weeks following the smoldering holocaust and remain on the barricades of the entire area to this day.

ROTC Honor Guard Flag ceremonials will open and close the event along with the singing of the National Anthem and patriotic favorites. The intention of the concert is to be a tribute to the fallen heroes of that dreadful day when the whole world stood still. “Lest We Forget.”

All are invited. Admission is free.

Music Lovers’ Opportunity Did you know that musicians are great folks to hang out with? They are usually quick-witted and kind− a nice combination. The Tuesday Music Club gives you the opportunity to be with people with like interests in an enjoyable setting. We strive to promote quality music to our members and friends from the community from October through May. We are a club with a purpose, trying to help and promote great music from our area. Our meetings are free and open to the public with a catered luncheon following the monthly meeting. Reservations are required if staying for lunch. Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of the month at 10:30 in our clubhouse located at 421 East Park Street, on the corner of Success and Park.

The Tuesday Music Club of Lakeland is an associateof the Florida and National Federation of Music Clubs. We proudly announce that one of our own, Ann Blount Stockton, has been elected as President of the Fla. Federation of Music Clubs. This is only the second time in our 91-year history that Lakeland has had this honor, with Mrs. Glen W. Morrison (Hazelle) holding the posi-tion from 1936-1938. Ann has held the position of TMC president, program and publicity chairmen as well as president of the Bay Ridge District. Joining her on her board are fellow Tuesday Music Club members Dr. Liana Valente as Florida Arts Division Chairman and Judy McLaurin as Florida Choral Music Chairman. Congratulations! As members of the Federation we participate in activities and scholarships that promote promising young musicians as they pursue a career in music. An example of this is found in The Stephen Foster/Jeanie Auditions held at the Stephen Foster State Folk Culture in White Springs, FL. It is open to promising young vocalists capable of giving a creditable concert performance. Qualified judges choose a Jeanie and a Stephen who are awarded $2000 each, as well as two Jeanie maids and a Stephen runner up receiving $1000 each. Last year the Tuesday Music Club sponsored the Stephen Winner, Christopher Kline, a student of Dr. John Thomasson from Florida Southern College and a Jeanie Maid, Brittany Wood, a student of Dr. Liana Valente. Christopher progressed on to win the National Federation of Music Clubs Student/Collegiate Biennial Competition Award for best male vocalist in the nation. We are so proud! This year the date for the Stephen Foster/Jeanie auditions is October 7-8. The contestants wear costumes from the 1850-1860 period in our history. This event is free and open to the public. Come join us. You will be glad you did!!
