Art During the IR
A. Romanticism
B. Realism
A. Romanticism
• Movement in art and ideas that emphasized emotions (moods), celebrated nature, glorified the past, and cherished folk traditions.
• Took place at the beginning of the IR.
• Example of Art: Arthur Rackham The Old Woman in the Wood
• An example in literature: Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein
• It was important because:
1. A gothic novel (told of supernatural events)
2. It showed a fear of the machines
3. It warned of the danger of meddling with nature
• Musical example: Ludwig van Beethoven who composes mood music
B. Realism
• As the IR developed and conditions in the factories and cities worsened, people became tired of seeing an idealized view of life.
• Wanted to show the reality of the times – actual people rather than a dream of nature.
• Example of Art: Gustave Courbet The Winnowers
• An example in literature: Charles Dickens’s Oliver Twist
