Sketching Through Photography• Art Deco cues became a theme discovered from

discussing Tumblr inspiration page

• I found 3 iconic Deco Buildings in Chicago to photograph as a study

Photo-Sketches

• Photos were taken of any visuals that grabbed my attention

• Then photos were edited in Lightroom to quickly add emotive emphasis

• Then images were narrowed down to 25 best photographs

IMAGE STUDIES

• Many images had high repetition in unbroken parallel lines

• Images were roughly sketched over to study their line properties

• When compared with found images from Tumblr, I noticed parallel lines weren’t the only element that grabbed my attention

• Striking Tumblr images were taken for sketch study

• Main elements looked for were Line, Focal Point, Repetition

• Here I began to see the idea that deco has “spills” that the eye is drawn to through vertical lines

• As I studied more images, I began to see how important focal points were to the interest of the image

• The image to the left keeps the eye traveling through the scene, telling continual story

• The image to the right made me realize the gathering dynamics found in the woman getting out of the taxi on the previous page
