  • It’s Black, It’s WhiteBlack & White Photography

    Activity

    Professional photographer, Mr Benny Ang will share his expertise on black and white photography. He will give an introduction to the basics of photography, followed by how to develop an eye to capture images in hues of black and white. There will be also a practical session to round things up along with critiques.

    Participants are to bring their own cameras. Most of the class will be conducted outdoors.

    In this activity, the history of Singapore is first presented via drawings, e.g. the difference between theolder and more recent HDB flats. You will get to learn drawing skills, using mediums such as colour pencilsand sketching pens and pair up to draw a landscape of your choice with expert guidance from theinstructor.

  • FrozenMaking of Traditional Ice Cold Desserts

    Activity

    The first ice-cold desserts were ice balls made from finely-grated ice, packed into a ball and topped withcoloured sugar syrup, typically held and eaten using the hands. The ice ball was a common sight in the1950s and 1960s and sold along the roads and street corners, usually by pushcart drink vendors.Participants will have a hands-on experience using a traditional ice shaving machine and creating their ownice balls and ice kachang using the flavours and colours available.

    *Ingredients will not contain any pork or lard. Not recommended for students with nut allergies.

  • Wrap & RollMaking of Popiah and Kueh Dadar

    Activity

    Popiah is a thin paper-like pancake stuffed with a filling made of cooked vegetables and meats. ASingaporean favourite, it is often eaten as a snack or accompaniment to a main meal. Kueh Dadar is arolled crepe flavored with pandan juice and filled with grated coconut steeped in palm sugar.

    In this activity, the instructor will first demonstrate the making of Popiah and Kueh Dadar wrapper skins,and also show how to cook the internal ingredients. Pre-made skins and ingredients will be provided forparticipants to wrap their own rolls. Ingredients will not contain any pork or lard. not recommended forstudents with nut allergies. Interested participants will also be allowed to make the skins (subject to timeavailability)

  • Fly Me to the MoonMaking of Mooncake

    Activity

    Traditionally eaten during the Mid-Autumn Festival, mooncakes are a baked Chinese pastry that wereoriginally filled with lotus seed paste. Over time they have diversified and crusts can now come chewy orflaky with flavours like yam, durian and even chocolate.

    Here, the instructor will first demonstrate the making of mooncake snowskin. She will also show how tocook the filling and how to shape the mooncakes using a traditional wooden mould. Pre-made skins, fillingsand plastic moulds will be provided for participants to make their own mooncakes. Ingredients will notcontain any pork or lard. Not recommended for students with nut allergies.

  • The StonesSewing Five Stones

    Activity

    Students will learn to hand-stitch a set of five stones by instructors from ‘Sew into It’. Five stones is atraditional game played in Singapore since our kampong days. This game improves eyesight, memory andbuilds concentration. In today’s context, this would be considered an ‘educational game’ as in the past we didnot have the benefit of technology and electronic gadgets.

    Having a parent or grandparent present will help ensure that the workshop can be completed within 11/2hrs. Students will be given instructions to take home on how to play the game after they have completedtheir sewing.

  • Mama, I Shrunk the Tile!Peranakan Tile Designs on Polyshrink

    Activity

    In Southeast Asia, colourful ceramic tiles were popular in the British Straits Settlements of Malacca, Penangand Singapore during the colonial era. In Singapore and Malaysia the tiles are commonly known asPeranakan tiles because they were widely used by the Peranakan.

    In this activity, staff trainers from MINDSCraft will teach students how to make one of MINDSCraft’s mostfun items, the polyshrink plastic keychain. Students can recreate the intricate and colourful floral andanimal patterns found on Peranakan tile designs onto palm-sized plastic sheets that will be shrunk &converted to a keychain. Each student will be given a set of materials to make 1 keychain.
