LOUISVILLE, KY--The likely top three wagering choices for the
GI Kentucky Derby will break next to each other on Saturday, with heavy favorite Tiz the Law (Constitution) drawn in 17.
GI Runhappy Santa Anita Derby hero Honor A. P. (Honor Code) will be posted to his inside, and GI Haskell S. winner Authentic (Into Mischief) was assigned the far outside 18 hole during Tuesday morning=s post draw. The 146th ARun for the Roses@lost a major contender earlier in the morning when streaking Art Collector (Bernardini) was ruled out due to a minor foot issue. Tiz the Law, whose perfect record in this jumbled-up season includes convincing scores in the GIII Holy Bull S., GI Curlin Florida Derby, GI Belmont S. and most recently in the Aug. 8 GI Runhappy Travers S., was given ultra low 3-5 odds on Mike Battaglia=s morning line. No Derby favorite has been 3-5 on the line since Easy Goer in 1989, and Tiz the Law=s quote is the lowest since Empire Maker was set at 6-5 in 2003. Both of those runners settled for second in their respective Derbies.
AI like being on the outside, I didn=t particularly want to be out that far but he seems to handle everything that=s thrown at him so we=ll just have to leave it up to him,@ said the Sackatoga Stable-owned favorite=s trainer Barclay Tagg. Cont. p3
ART COLLECTOR TO MISS DERBY Bruce Lunsford=s Art Collector (Bernardini) will not run in
Saturday=s GI Kentucky Derby because of a minor foot issue,
trainer Tom Drury said Tuesday. Drury said the colt, who figured
to be a clear second choice in Saturday=s Derby, nicked the bulb
of his left front heel with a hind hoof while galloping Monday at
Churchill Downs. Drury indicated the colt will now be pointed
toward the Oct. 3 GI Preakness S.
AHe grabbed himself yesterday morning training,@ Drury said.
AIt was still very sensitive this morning. When I took my thumbs
to palpate the bulbs of his heels, you could still tell it was
pinching him. I had to make a choice. Your horse has to always
come first. To run in a race of this caliber and trying to compete
against the best 3-year-olds in this country, you=ve got to be
110%. To me, it wouldn=t have been fair to Art Collector, even
though it=s slight, knowing that there=s an issue of any kind.@

Derby Draw cont. from p1
AIt gives you a chance, if you have any speed at all, it gives you
a chance to get a better position,@ Tagg added.
While no horse has won the Derby from the 17 hole, horses
have won from further out than
that, including last year=s victor
via DQ Country House (Lookin At
Lucky), who was drawn 20. Plus
gates one and 20 will be left open
due to the less than full field. This
year=s Derby marks the debut of a
custom-made starting gate that
can accommodate up to 20
horses and eliminate the need for
an auxiliary gate.
AI just put those kind of things
out of my mind,@ said Tagg, who
took the 2003 Derby with
another Sackatoga-owned New
York-bred in Funny Cide
(Distorted Humor). AThere are a lot of horses who didn=t win the
Derby so frankly I=m not that worried about it.@
The veteran conditioner continued, AHe=s a unique horse, I
keep pinching myself because he=s such a unique horse.
Everything we=ve asked him to do he just does it. He=s a strong
horse, he=s not flighty but he=s on the muscle all the time. He=s
so exciting in his races. You think he=s gotten in trouble here, in
trouble there and next thing you know he=s in front. He=s a
pretty amazing horse. I don=t
know if I=ve seen a horse like
him.@
Tiz the Law arrived Tuesday
morning from Saratoga after a
routine flight--the New York-
based contingent=s journey had
been pushed back a day due to
scheduling issues.
AHe flew in from Albany and we
met him here,@ Tagg said. AHe
walked off the van, took a couple
turns, did his business and started
eating hay.@
Hall of Famer Bob Baffert=s
Derby line-up has changed a
number of times during this strung-out Triple Crown season, and
he=ll ultimately have two chances to tie Ben Jones=s record of six
wins.

In addition to the speedy Authentic--whose record would be
perfect if not for a second to Honor A. P. in the Santa Anita
Derby--he=ll be represented by $1-million KEESEP yearling
Thousand Words (Pioneerof the Nile), who upended Honor A. P.
in Del Mar=s Shared Belief S. last time Aug. 1.
ANot ideal for Authentic but I=m OK with it,@ Baffert told the
Churchill Downs media team via text. AHe=s out of harm=s way.
Just glad to be in the gate.@
Starlight Racing=s Jack Wolf said of Authentic=s draw: AThe one
time he was out there in California he broke dead right [in the
Santa Anita Derby under Drayden Van Dyke] so hopefully [jockey
Johnny Velazquez] will be a stronger rider this time around. I
guess it=s better than one or two... I would think [he=ll have to
send]. The one hole now is basically what the old three hole was
and there will probably be a couple scratches between now and
then so maybe we do move in a couple spots.@
Art Collector to Miss Derby
I had a meeting yesterday afternoon with my veterinarians,
Foster Northrup, Rick Costelle, had my blacksmith there. We
discussed some different scenarios. We maybe could have put a
bar shoe on it and stabilized it and he would have been fine. But
you=re going to the Kentucky Derby. First and foremost, as the
trainer, it=s my responsibility to be the voice for the horse. That=s
just not fair to him [to run]. He=s been too good to us, and we=re
going to make sure he=s taken care of first.@
Art Collector departed for Drury=s Skylight training base in
Oldham County, Kentucky, yesterday morning.
AI knew after we gave him a little anti-inflammatory this
morning that he=d be perfectly sound,@ he said. AThat=s not
surprising at all. And that=s what we wanted to see. We wanted
to see him respond well to it, and it looks like that=s what
happened. On to Baltimore.@
Art Collector was widely considered the biggest threat to GI
Belmont and GI Runhappy Travers S. winner Tiz the Law
(Constitution) heading into Saturday=s Run for the Roses. He is
unbeaten in four starts this year since joining Drury=s barn,
including two victories at Churchill Downs.
AWe didn=t want to take any chances with a horse potentially
this good,@ Lunsford said. AThe Derby means an awful lot to me
so it=s been kind of a tough day and night. But the horse is
always the most important thing in all these things. We=ll get
another chance to have another day. We=ll try and make it to
the Preakness and maybe from there, the Breeders= Cup.@

Gamine | Sarah Andrew
THE TDN KENTUCKY OAKS TOP 10 FOR
SEPTEMBER 2
by Bill Finley
Four months after its initial date, the GI Kentucky Oaks is
finally upon us and the race promises to be one of the best
renditions ever of what has become the most important
3-year-old filly race on the calendar. This may be a two-horse
race, but it is a two-horse race between two fillies, Swiss
Skydiver (Daredevil) and Gamine (Into Mischief), who appear to
be among the best of their generation. Superiority will be
settled on the racetrack.
With Swiss Skydiver and Gamine dominating the competition
throughout the late spring and summer, cases of Oaks Fever
were in short supply this year. Only nine entered the race,
making this the smallest Oaks field since 2009 when Rachel
Alexandra topped a field of seven.
1) GAMINE (Into Mischief--Peggy Jane, by Kafwain)
>TDN Rising Star= O-Michael L. Petersen. B-Grace
Thoroughbred Holdings LLC (KY). T-Bob Baffert. Sales
History: $220,000 yrl >18 KEESEP; $1,800,000 2yo >19
FTMMAY. Lifetime Record: MGISW, 4-3-0-0, $363,600.
Last Start: GI Longines Test S., SAR, Aug. 8
Accomplishments: 1st GI Longines Acorn S., BEL, June 20
Next Start: GI Longines Kentucky Oaks, CD, Sept. 4
Equineline PPs. KY Oaks Points: 50.
Installed as the even-money morning line favorite, Gamine
drew post five. The game plan is obvious. She has a tremendous
asset in her natural speed and will likely open up early and dare
them to catch her. That may mean a quick pace, but Gamine
seems capable of running fast early and having enough left late.
She posted fractions of :22 3/5 and :45 in the GI Acorn and then
drew off to win by 18 3/4 lengths. That, of course was at a mile
and the Oaks is a mile-and-an-eighth, so she does have one
important question to answer.
On the Beyer scale, she is clearly faster that Swiss Skydiver.
She ran a 110 in the Acorn and a 108 in the GI Test. Swiss
Skydiver's best number is a 102.
Just six months into her career, Gamine has come a long way
in a short period of time and had the Oaks been run May 1
there's no way she would have been ready for the race. She
made her second career start May 2 at Oaklawn in what
normally would have been the day after the Oaks.
In the sorry-for-getting-way ahead-of-ourselves department:
suppose Gamine wins the Oaks and Tiz the Law (Constitution)
wins the GI Kentucky Derby. Could we possibly see a showdown
for the ages between the two in the GI Preakness S? It's worth
noting that Gamine's owner Michael Lund Petersen is from
Baltimore.
2) SWISS SKYDIVER (Daredevil--Expo Gold, by Johannesburg)
O-Peter J Callahan. B-WinStar Farm (KY). T-Kenneth G McPeek.
Sales History: $35,000 yrl >18 KEESEP. Lifetime Record: MGSW,

Swiss Skydiver | Sarah Andrew
It's hard to imagine that a filly who is coming off a Grade I win,
ran second against males in the GII Toyota Blue Grass S. and has
four stakes wins this year could be second choice (8-5) in the
morning line. That just tells you how highly regarded Gamine is.
It will be interesting to see what tactics jockey Tyler Gaffalione
and trainer Kenny McPeek employ. Breaking from the one post,
Swiss Skydiver is almost certain to be second in the early going
behind Gamine. Will Gaffalione let Gamine get away from him
or will he go after Gamine and try to take the fight to her early?
While Gamine remains an unknown at the distance, Swiss
Skydiver will not have any problems at a mile-and-an-eighth. She
didn't blossom until McPeek was able to get her around two
turns and has the very rare distinction of coming into the
nine-furlong Oaks off a win at 10-furlongs, in the GI Alabama S.
She, too, could surface in the Preakness. McPeek has already
tried her against boys once and is perhaps the most daring
big-name trainer in the sport today.

Donna Veloce Tuesday at Churchill | Coady
How the race unfolds may also dictate how this filly fares and
whether or not she will have any chance to unseat Gamine and
Swiss Skydiver. Speech drew post four and trainer Michael
McCarthy sees her sitting just off of Gamine and Swiss Skydiver.
If those two hook up in a duel Speech could get a perfect trip.
"It kind of makes things pretty clear for us," McCarthy said
after the draw. "We've got speed outside of us and speed down
inside. I think [Gamine and Swiss Skydiver] will probably keep
each other company. Hopefully we can tuck in right behind
them and have a nice trip."
But will that be enough? Speech won the GI Ashland S. in her
previous start, but before that she kept finishing behind fillies
she will meet in this race. She was second behind Swiss Skydiver
in the GII Santa Anita Oaks, second behind Gamine in an
allowance at Oaklawn (she was subsequently placed first when
Gamine tested positive for a prohibited substance) and second
behind Donna Veloce in the GIII Santa Ysabel S.
A very good filly who was probably born in the wrong year.

Shedaresthedevil | Coady
Just a few weeks ago it didn't appear that Donna Veloce had
any chance of making the Kentucky Oaks. She was working for
trainer Simon Callaghan, but hadn't raced since winning the
Mar. 8 Santa Ysabel and had fallen off the radar. But after a
work last Friday at Del Mar Callaghan signaled his intention to
start the filly in the Oaks. The other option was the GII Eight
Belles S. at seven furlongs.
She was good enough to easily defeat Speech in the Santa
Ysabel after stumbling at the start, but it's hard to imagine her
winning such a tough race after such a long layoff.
Ricardo Santana, Jr. replaces Flavien Prat, who elected to stay
at Del Mar for the weekend.
5) SHEDARESTHEDEVIL (Daredevil--Starship Warpspeed, by

Though she's won her last two starts, the race that really tells
you where Shedaresthedevil stacks up is the GIII Fantasy S. run
May 1 at Oaklawn. Cont. p9
TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 9 OF 16 • THETDN.COM WEDNESDAY • SEPTEMBER 2, 2020
She appeared to run her race that day but was third--beaten
13 1/4 lengths--by Swiss Skydiver. She came back to win an
allowance at Churchill and the GIII Indiana Oaks, but couldn't get
out of the eighties when it comes to Beyer numbers. The Oaks is
loaded this year and it's very hard to see Shedaresthedevil or
any of the long shots posting what would be a monumental
upset.
6) HOPEFUL GROWTH (Tapiture--Maiden America, by Rock
Hard Ten)
O-St Elias Stable. B-Phillips Racing Partnership (KY). T-Anthony
Margotta Jr. Sales History: $160,000 Ylg >18 KEESEP. Lifetime
Record: GSW, 5-3-1-0, $183,240.
Last Start: 1st GIII Monmouth Oaks, MTH, Aug. 1
Next Start: GI Longines Kentucky Oaks, CD , Sept. 4
Equineline PPs. KY Oaks Points: 50.
Like many in this race, it would be a noteworthy
accomplishment if she could finish third or fourth. It's hard to
imagine anything better than that. She seemed to be a cut
below even Grade III company until her last stat when she
scored an upset at 11-1 in the GIII Monmouth Oaks. Trainer
Anthony Margotta, Jr. went with the blinkers that day, so that
may be what woke her up. Appears to be getting better but
would take a monumental improvement for her to win the Oaks.
7) DREAM MARIE (Graydar--Lin Marie, by Curlin)
O-Miracles International Trading; B-Wynnstay LLC & GWR
LLC (KY); T-Matthew Williams. Sales History: $10,000 yrl

Last Start: 4th GIII Monmouth Oaks, MTH, Aug. 1
Next Start: GI Longines Kentucky Oaks, CD, Sept. 4
Equineline PPs. KY Oaks Points: 35
Part of the bottom three in the field, all of whom are 50-1 inthe morning line, and will be hard pressed to finish among thetop four. Showed a little life when second in the GIII DelawareOaks, but followed that up with a dull showing when fourth inthe Monmouth Oaks. Should she somehow win it would makefor quite a human interest story. Trainer Matthew Williams is anative of Jamaica who is just 24. He has a five-horse stable andall of his horses are owned by his family's Miracles InternationalTrading Inc.

Next Start: GI Longines Kentucky Oaks, CD, Sept. 4
Equineline PPs. KY Oaks Points: 47
Trainer Dallas Stewart is best known for his ability to get
seemingly hopeless long shots to win or run well in huge spots,
but even he appears to be overmatched this time. The daughter
of Bayern was at her best when second in the GII Fair Grounds
Oaks in March, but seems to have gone in the wrong direction
since then. She was beaten 10 lengths in May in an allowance at
Churchill and then failed to win as the favorite in a July 31
allowance at Ellis Park.
9) BAYERNESS (Bayern--Weight No More, by Pure Prize)
O-Belladonna Racing, LLC; B-Machmer Hall (KY); T-Cherie
DeVeaux. Sales History: $170,000 yrl >18 KEESEP; $350,000 2yo
>19 EASMAY. Lifetime Record: 5-2-0-2, $131,200.
Last Start: 3rd GIII Indiana Oaks, IND, July 8
Next Start: GI Longines Kentucky Oaks, CD, Sept. 4
Equineline PPs. KY Oaks Points: 8.
She is actually the only horse in the race ever to beat Swiss
Skydiver, which she accomplished in an allowance last
November at Churchill Downs. But Swiss Skydiver has improved
dramatically since while this filly is still looking for her next win.
Has struggled this year, finishing a distant seventh in the GII
Davona Dale S. and a distant third on both the GIII Dogwood S.
and the GIII Indiana Oaks. Is trained by former Chad Brown
assistant Cherie DeVaux.

KEENELAND ANNOUNCES JOCKEY
PROTOCOLS FOR FALL MEET Keeneland released COVID-19 procedures for jockeys who will
ride during the 17-day Fall Meet, running from Oct. 2-24.
Jockey COVID-19 testing protocols:
$ Jockeys who plan to ride opening day (Oct. 2) will be
required to be in Lexington Tuesday, Sept. 29 and
receive a COVID-19 test at Keeneland.
$ Jockeys who plan to ride at Keeneland after opening
day will need to provide a CDC gold standard RT-PCR
COVID-19 nasopharyngeal test confirmed negative
within 72 hours of the day of their first race.
$ A jockey who races at Keeneland and leaves Kentucky
will be required to provide a CDC gold standard RT-PCR
COVID-19 nasopharyngeal test confirmed negative
within 72 hours of the day of the next race in which he
or she plans to ride at Keeneland.
$ In addition to the main jockeys quarters, Keeneland will
maintain five additional jockeys quarters that permit
riders to be sequestered. These spaces will be organized
around specific geographic areas where the jockeys
customarily ride, including New York, California, other
U.S. jurisdictions, international jurisdictions and
overflow from the main jockey quarters for
Kentucky-based riders.
$ Except for valets and the clerk of scales, no additional
personnel will be permitted in any jockeys quarters.
General jockey protocols at Keeneland:
$ Social distancing is required at all times.
$ Masks/face coverings are required at all times except
when riding in a race or a timed workout in the
morning. This includes when the rider is in the jockeys
quarters, in the paddock before a race, while being
ponied to post and after the race when returning to the
jockeys quarters.
$ Jockeys will be provided with face coverings.
$ Valets, assistant starters, outriders and pony people will
be required to wear masks/face coverings throughout
the day as will everyone who is on the grounds.
$ When visiting the paddock before a race, jockeys are
prohibited from making physical contact aside from a
leg up from the trainer or a member of his or her staff.
$ Jockeys are prohibited from visiting barns in the stable
area in the mornings. Cont. p12
TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 12 OF 16 • THETDN.COM WEDNESDAY • SEPTEMBER 2, 2020
$ A rider will only be able to visit the apron area of the
main track, the area outside the Racing Office by the
gap or the paddock. Visits to the Rice Road barn area
also are off limits to jockeys.
$ If a jockey wishes to exercise a horse in the morning, he
or she will need to meet that mount in the paddock,
exercise the horse then dismount upon exiting the
track.
$ All jockeys will be able to ride with a +3 pound weight
allowance because the sauna/steam will be closed.
$ Boxed lunches will be provided, but no a la carte
options are available.
$ Jockeys and valets will be allowed to bring their own
food items.
$ All jockeys quarters will be sanitized throughout the day
and receive another deep cleaning each evening after
the rooms are vacated. The products Keeneland is using
to disinfect the entire facility is a combination including
BioProtect, EvaClean/Puretabs and P&G=s Spic and
Span-- all of which are EPA-registered.
$ Keeneland will do a deep sanitization of the starting
gate before the Fall Meet using the aforementioned
BioProtect product, which is a disinfectant and provides
90 days of long-term antimicrobial protection (to
immediately kill any COVID-19 particles that come into
contact with the starting gate). The same product will
be used in the jockeys quarters for the utmost
protection of all surfaces after they have been treated.
$ Jockeys are to enter Keeneland through Gate 2 on
Versailles Road. They will use the track=s South Gate
entrance next to the Welcome Center to enter the
grounds. Once entries are drawn, their names will be
put on a list to be able to access the Keeneland grounds
and facility. Once the overnight is released, Clerk of
Scales Javier Torres will decide which jockeys quarters
they will use.
$ Jockeys will undergo the same medical checks as
everyone coming through the Keeneland gates. This will
include a temperature check as well as medical
screening questions.
HORSE OWNERS HELP BACKSIDE WORKERS
OVERCOME THE DIGITAL AGE Edited Press Release
Across the nation, communities have grappled with how to
ensure that all community members have access to the internet
and computers in order to complete schooling and access vital
resources. In Louisville, over 20% of families lacked access to
internet, including many of the workers and their families who
work at Churchill Downs and surrounding racetracks. Now, due
to a generous donation to the Backside Learning Center from
Wasabi Venture Stables Club members, many backside families
will move closer towards digital equity.
The Backside Learning Center(BLC) is a non-profit organization
dedicated to building community and enriching the lives of
equine workers and their families at Churchill Downs and
surrounding racetracks. When the pandemic hit in March, the
Backside Learning Center acted quickly to provide emergency
food relief and start a digital inclusion project for families who
were suddenly faced with the challenges of virtual learning. BLC
repurposed donated computers and provided them to 20
backside families and worked with JCPS to secure laptops and
hotspots.
When Jeff Musgrove, a horseowner and member of Wasabi
Ventures Stables learned of the work of the Backside Learning
Center from the TDN=s story on April 25, he immediately felt a
call to action.
AWhen I saw what the BLC was doing, I knew that I had a
unique opportunity to make an impact in the lives of the families
that play such a critical role in our sport,@ he said.
Wasabi Ventures Stables reached out to its members to raise
funds to strengthen the BLC=s work on digital inclusion with
backside families. Michele Pesula Kuegler, Director of Aftercare
& Community explained, AOur club has a sense of generosity and
caring that is unrivaled. With the opportunity to fundraise for
the Backside Learning Center and support the community who
cares for our horses, our members recognized the value in the
BLC programming and gladly donated.@
Funds will provide internet access, computers and digital skills
training to backside families and will also strengthen technology
for the BLC=s learning hub for students.
AThe partnership with Wasabi Ventures Stables symbolizes the
strength and interconnectedness of the horse racing
community,@ added Sherry Stanley, Executive Director of the
Backside Learning Center. AWe are so grateful for these
resources that will enable Backside families to thrive in this new
digital world.@
This initiative builds on the BLC=s efforts to connect horse
owners more closely with the backside community. In June, the
BLC launched Purses for a Purpose, a program where owners
can pledge a portion of their horse=s winnings to support
programs for backside workers and their families.

Center or to become part of Purses For a Purpose, click here.

THA ADDRESSES PROPOSED HORSERACING
INTEGRITY & SAFETY ACT The Thoroughbred Horsemen=s Association issued a statement
Tuesday regarding the proposed Horseracing Integrity and
Safety Act, which was announced Monday and is expected to be
introduced in the Senate this month.
THA Chairman Alan Foreman said, AFor the past year, the THA
has been actively involved with industry leaders in seeking
solutions to our medication issues and in enacting rules, policies
and protocols to enhance the health, safety and welfare of our
horses.
It has been our widely-expressed view that the original
Horseracing Integrity Act, as proposed, should encompass
mandatory equine safety and welfare standards for all
racetracks and horsemen, and the creation of an investigative
and enforcement arm of the industry.
While we have yet to see the proposed legislation, it appears
that in his Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act, Senator
McConnell has substantially incorporated our views. We intend
to continue to be a constructive participant since the legislation,
if enacted, will require substantial industry support and
assistance.
Our Association has been a national leader in promoting
equine health and safety protocols through the Mid-Atlantic
Strategic Plan to Reduce Equine Fatalities and we expect to
continue in that role.@
NEW VOCATIONS/T.I.P. CANCEL FALL HORSE
SHOWS New Vocations Racehorse has canceled its 2020
All-Thoroughbred Charity Horse Show, a dressage and combined
test event, slated to be held at the Kentucky Horse Park in
Lexington, Ky. Oct. 3. The Jockey Club Thoroughbred Incentive
Program (T.I.P.) followed suit and canceled its dressage and
combined test championships, slated for Oct. 4.
AIt was a difficult decision to cancel the October show, but we
feel that the safety of our show team and exhibitors is the most
important,@ says Anna Ford, New Vocations Thoroughbred
Program director. AIt has been a struggle this year as all of our
live fundraising events have been cancelled. However, we have
some virtual events in the works that we hope to launch in the
near future.@
Run concurrently, the two shows typically host more than 400
Thoroughbreds at the Kentucky Horse Park each fall.
AT.I.P. continues to explore consolation competition options
for early 2021,@ added Kristin Werner, senior counsel for The
Jockey Club and coordinator of T.I.P. AWe look forward to the
2021 championships next fall.@
Horses qualified and declared by the Aug. 3 deadline for the
2020 championships will be eligible to participate in the 2021
events. A list of those horses is available at

ASTERN YEARLINGS COULD EMBODY BEST
OF A RICH PEDIGREEby Katie Ritz
Three years ago, Darley=s Sales Manager Darren Fox boarded a
plane for Australia to see if Astern (Aus), their highly-rated son
of Medaglia d=Oro, could be a good fit for the American roster.
AUpon making the trip to Australia to make sure he would
work physically, it took all of about three seconds of looking at
Astern to say, >Yes, this horse will work in America,=@ Fox
recalled. AHe has a lot of attributes that we look for and he was,
in any jurisdiction, a high-level, high-performing racehorse. So it
was really a no brainer.@
Astern joined his sire at Jonabell Farm=s stud barn in 2018 as a
shuttle stallion, and is now seeing his first American yearlings
take to the sales ring.
Having raced exclusively in Australia for trainer John O=Shea,
Astern won on debut before taking the G2 Silver Slipper S. and
the G3 Kindergarten S. From there, he won the G2 Run to the
Rose followed by the G1 Golden Rose.
AHe was an unbelievably impressive winner of that race,@ Fox
said of his record-breaking victory in the Golden Rose.

Darley=s Group 1-winning son of Medaglia d=Oro, Astern
Yearling Astern filly out of Dancing Solo | Darley
AHe=s rated as the best winner of that race in Australian racing
history. And that, of course, is a key stallion-making race for
them. So he was a very accomplished 2-year-old and 3-year-old,
and [his 126 Timeform rating] makes him the highest-rated son
of Medaglia d=Oro anywhere in the world, past or present.@
He added of Astern=s racing ability, AHe had very fluid,
beautiful, efficient action. His jockey, James McDonald, called
him the best-moving horse he=s ever ridden and described it as
like being airborne. That=s high praise from a highly-
accomplished jockey down there.@
Fox said that he believes Astern has inherited the very best
from both sides of his pedigree.
AYou can see a lot of his sire about him,@ he said. AHe=s got a
great hip, a better hip than Medaglia d=Oro himself. We can
attribute that to his broodmare sire Exceed and Excel (Aus)
(Danehill), who is the leading sire of 2-year-old stakes winners in
the world. He gets a lot of strength and precocity from the
broodmare sire.@
Astern is out of the winning mare Essaouira (Aus), who also
produced Alizee (Aus) (Sepoy {Aus}), a champion 3-year-old filly
and three-time Group 1 winner in Australia. He also hails from
the family of Group 1 winner La Baraka (Aus) (Euclase {Aus}), as
well as Triscay (Aus) (Marscay {Aus}), a champion 3-year-old in
Australia with five Group 1 victories to her name.
AHis dam is arguably the best broodmare in Australia,@ Fox
said. AIt=s an extremely rich, deep, high-caliber family. A large
part of Astern=s appeal is the family he brings to the table.@
In his first year at stud in the U.S., Astern filled a book of 120
mares with a $15,000 stud fee. While still reverse shuttling to his
home base in Australia, he bred an additional 180 mare in his
next two books.
AWhile Astern stood for $15,000 in his first year at stud in the
U.S., he stood for close to $A40,000 in Australia,@ Fox noted. ASo
we like to think of him as an equivalent to Frosted or Nyquist
coming to Australia from the U.S. and being offered to
[Australian] breeders at a great value to account for the fact that they are from another jurisdiction.@
At the Australian sales, Astern=s progeny sold for up to
$A725,000. Now his first yearlings will take on the American market, with the first four on offer at Fasig-Tipton Selected. AWe=ve been pleased with what we have seen with the Asterns,@ Fox said. AWe have been impressed by their size and he is definitely stamping them. I love their length of body. They=re very correct like he is, with great bone, and they look like natural athletes. I can see a lot of Medaglia d=Oro coming through, which gives us confidence that this is a stallion who will get horses effective on both surfaces.@
Twenty-eight of his yearlings are cataloged for the Keeneland
September Sale. Hip 1736, a filly out of Grade III winner Dancing
Solo (Giant=s Causeway) and from the family of dual Grade I
winner Voodoo Dancer (Kingmambo), sells out of the Small
Batch Sales consignment.
AShe=s a big filly with natural athleticism,@ said Small Batch
Sale=s Fletcher Mauk. ATo put condition on her is really easy as
she holds muscle a little better than most horses. She has the
frame and the natural muscle tone. In the barn, she=s easy to be
around and takes everything in stride. It=s fun to watch her
exercise. She trains like she enjoys it, sets her head and steps
underneath herself, and keeps a nice, steady pace.@
Also at Keeneland, Hip 2455 is out of the stakes-winning mare
Alex=s Allure (Sky Classic), whose dam Ava Knowsthecode
(Cryptoclearance) has produced five graded stakes winners,
including Grade I winners Justin Phillip (First Samurai) and
Greenpointcrusader (Bernardini).
AAstern=s yearlings are spread the right way throughout the
sale, and they=re there to be found,@ Fox said.

Shantel Lanerie and daughter Brittlyn Shantel Lanerie Foundation
AHe=s going to appeal to a large cross-section of buyers. These
are fast-looking horses. They will be precocious, but I think they
will train on at three like he did. I think they will appeal to both
surfaces, given what we=re seeing from the yearlings
themselves. He has crossed beautifully with the American mare,
and we=re excited to see what that can bring to Astern and his
progeny.@
2020 RENEWALS OF THE SMART N FANCY,
EATONTOWN OFFICIALLY DOWNGRADED The American Graded Stakes Committee has ruled that the
Aug. 27 Smart N Fancy S. at Saratoga and Monmouth Park=s
GIII Eatontown S., contested Aug. 29, will remain downgraded
for 2020 after both events were taken off the turf and moved to
the main tracks. The Smart N Fancy was automatically
downgraded to a non-listed black-type, while the Eatontown
became a listed race after its removal from the turf. Races that
are originally carded for the turf but subsequently moved to the
dirt are automatically downgraded, however, they are subject to
the committee=s review which determines whether the races in
question will reinstated to their original rating.
LA CUP DAY FEATURES SHANTEL LANERIE BREAST
CANCER FUNDRAISER In support of the Shantel Lanerie Cancer Breast Foundation,
Harrah=s Louisiana Downs will host a fundraiser Saturday,
Sept. 19. The wife of jockey Corey Lanerie was diagnosed with
Stage 1 breast cancer in January, 2018, and passed away six
months later. She is survived by her parents, husband and
daughter, Brittlyn.
Beginning at 2:00 p.m. on Louisiana Cup Day, a table will be set
up in the grandstand with monogrammed apparel and
memorabilia. Jockeys will be on hand to autograph the items,
with all proceeds to benefit the foundation. Fans will be able to
stop by the table, purchase items or make donations until
6:00 p.m.
A close friend of Shantel, Rick Mocklin, who was Lanerie=s
agent for 10 years serves as founder and president of the
Shantel Lanerie Breast Cancer Foundation (SLBCF). The 501(c)(3)
organization was founded in September, 2018 with a mission of
educating, empowering and encouraging women to become
pro-active in early detection, and if diagnosed, surviving breast
cancer. Acknowledging that breast cancer impacts the entire
family, the Foundation designates funds raised through
donations and fundraisers to assist with basic needs of breast
cancer patients through every stage of diagnosis and treatment.
ABreast cancer can be devastating for so many people,@ said
Mocklin. ATo lose Shantel when she was just 42 years old was
heartbreaking for her family and many friends. The foundation
has already helped 40 women diagnosed with breast cancer and
we want to keep raising funds to support those in need.@

LOPE DE VEGA FILLY ROMPS TO RISING
STARDOM
Aunt Pearl (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) went straight to the leadand never looked back, coasting home to become the newest>TDN Rising Star= on opening day of Churchill Downs=abbreviated GI Kentucky Derby meet. Dispatched as the 9-5second-choice in this career bow, the 280,000gns TATOCTpurchase seized the early advantage, coasting along throughopening splits of :24.27 and :48.21. Turning for home in front, the bay sailed clear with ease under a hand ride from FlorentGeroux to win by five lengths. Gam=s Mission (Noble Mission{GB}) was best of the rest in second. The filly was part of a European venture put together byBSW/Crow Bloodstock=s Brad Weisbord and Liz Crow. She wasone of nine fillies purchased for this group of five American owners. AWe put together a venture last year to go over to Tattersallsto buy yearling fillies,@ Weisbord said. AThe thought process wasthat 50% of our high-dollar races were on turf and [Europe] hasthe best pedigrees on turf, so why try to play it with theAmerican pedigrees when we can get the European pedigrees. The pioneers were Chad Brown, Seth Klarman and Peter Brant inthe fact that they already had a champion out of there and itwas working. So, we kind of played copy cat in a way. Webought nine fillies and we dispersed them amongst fourdifferent trainers. This was our ventures third runner and firstwinner. The last month, she trained like the best one of the firstfive we sent out. She trained like a special filly the last three orfour weeks, but all on the dirt. We didn=t know what she woulddo on the turf, but she is bred for it. She ran to our expectationsand I would like to give the five owners credit for putting trust inour venture.@ AWe went over with the idea to buy nine or 10 horses and shewas the most expensive filly we bought,@ said Crow, who picked
out the filly at Tattersalls. AShe just had a really American look toher. She had a really good hind leg, a really strong forearm andgood muscling. She looked like she could train really well on thedirt here and she has been breezing very well on the dirt everyweek, so we were expecting a big effort out of her.@ Matauri Pearl--a half-sister to GSW & MGISP Wekeela (Fr)(Hurricane Run {Ire})--has a yearling filly by Sea the Stars (Ire)and produced a Lope de Vega colt this year.

PREDICTABLY HESITANTSTART TO YEARLING SALES
By Chris McGrath
DONCASTER, UKCWell, at least that ordeal is out of the way. It
was never going to be fun, but it could have been worse. Horses
were sold, some of them even sold well; and other vendors,
with an 83% clearance rate, were evidently ready to cut losses.
And soon everybody will at least be able to start figuring out
how venturesome they can afford to be, once finally bidding
good riddance to 2020.
Embarking on the European yearling circuit was always going
to be extremely challenging for an industry so exposed to
catastrophic loss of momentum in a global economy reeling
under the pandemic. Sure enough, as an auction that had been
on a tremendous roll in recent years, the opening session of the
Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale registered some sobering
returnsCand a very sobering absence, too, with no sign of
Shadwell after a five-year streak as leading buyers.
An average of ,36,687 was down from ,49,202 on the
opening session last yearCbut should perhaps be less randomly
measured against the ,46,519 average across both days. The
,30,000 median compared with ,38,000 on day one (and
,35,000 overall) last year. Turnover was down by one-third to
,6,970,500, from ,10,578,500. But perhaps the most instructive
index was the number of six-figure sales. In last year's opening
session, there were 19Ctopped by the ,440,000 Kingman colt
who set a new record for this auction. This time round there
were nine, with the session topped at ,170,000. Cont. p2
HARRINGTON: BREEDERS= CUP IS MORE
THAN A RACE MEETING The trainer originally best known for many high-class jumps
winners that has made an eye-catching advance on Flat racing's
top contests in recent years will share her thoughts with the TDN
on a monthly basis in this most unusual of seasons.
It is an understatement to say that it has been a very strange
year. In Ireland we managed a few meetings behind closed
doors before racing shut down completely, and we then had
some uncertainty over when it was going to start again. We
eventually accepted the fact that there was going to be no
Aintree, no Fairyhouse, no Punchestown, no Guineas at the right
time.
For a while it looked like we might get back before the end of
May, but then that was scuppered, and that was really like
having all your toys taken away from you in one go. It felt like
you'd been hit in the stomach and it knocked all the wind out of
you. Cont. p9

Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale Cont. from p1
Certainly the most conspicuous keynote from these opening
skirmishes was the fact that Shadwell appeared to have taken
"social distancing" to an unwelcome extreme. Needless to say,
the absence of Sheikh Hamdan's buying team caused alarm
among those consignors whose perennial and pervasive debt to
the Maktoum family had been measured, at this particular
auction in 2019, by 17 yearlings at an aggregate just shy of ,2
million.
It would be premature for those preparing yearlings for elite
sales to leap to conclusions about the broader intentions of the
various Maktoum concerns. Yes, the industry finds itself in
grievous need of its greatest benefactors. But if we have learned
anything from the travails of 2020, it is to repent of our
complacency in so much that we have always taken for granted.
But things could always be worse. As Guy O'Callaghan of
Grangemore Stud wisely remarked, after selling a Dark Angel
(Ire) colt well towards the end of the session, "Obviously it isn't
as strong a market as in recent years but the world's in a
different place compared with six months ago. We're lucky to
have a market at all. Isn't it good that at least we're able to turn
up and trade?"
Speaking to TDN on the eve of the sale, Goffs Group Chief
Executive Henry Beeby had said that planning for a financial
year that opened with the start of the coronavirus lockdown
was predicated on the firm's lowest turnover in recent years. In
the case of its British sales, that was 2013Cwhen turnover at the
Premier Sale stalled at ,13,310,250 for an average of ,32,464
and median of $25,000. Some breathing space, there, if day two
maintains Tuesday's levels of business. Cont. p3

Richard Ryan | Goffs UK
Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale Cont.
So not only could things be worse; they have been, not so long
ago. We all know that plenty of very productive racehorses will
be picked up cheaply this week. And so, however painfully, the
next cycle begins.
Another Banner Sale for Coulonces with ,170k Star When signing a ,115,000 docket for lot 160, an Acclamation
(Ire) colt, Richard Ryan found himself responsible for the top
price of the day to that point. Nonetheless he promised that
somebody would be spending a good deal more within the next
few minutes. Sure enough, Ryan himself promptly gave
,170,000 for lot 165, a January colt by Starspangledbanner
(Aus) imported over the Channel by Anna Sundstrom of
Coulonces Sales.
This was a happy reunion for vendor and purchaser alike, Ryan
having been forced to ,280,000 in last year's buoyant market
for the Wootton Bassett (GB) colt now known as Legion Of
Honour (GB). Trained for Teme Valley 2 by Roger Varian, he was
a promising second on his Haydock debut this summer. Both of
these colts were bought in the same interest and will likewise
head to Varian.
"He was the star of the show," Ryan enthused of the
session-topper. "The best in the sale in our opinion, and in the
opinion of the trainer. We also bought a very nice horse here
last year from the same vendor, for whom we have high hopes.
Starspangledbanner gets winners out of all sorts of mares and all
sorts of pages, but only very rarely will they have that kind of
look at this age: that scope and quality, backed up by a top-class
pedigree. It's a beautiful family."
It certainly is, with a distinct stamp of Classic quality for a
catalogue that typically majors in speed and precocity.

The colt's Classic-placed third dam Agathe (Manila), herself a
half-sister to GI Breeders' Cup Classic winner Arcangues (Sagace
{Fr}), is the dam of two elite winners in Artiste Royal (Danehill)
(dual Grade I scorer in the U.S.) and Aquarelliste (Fr) (Danehill),
who won the G1 Prix de Diane and chased home Sakhee (Bahri)
in the Arc.
Sundstrom was ecstatic that her Doncaster migrations had
once again proved so lucrative. This colt was co-bred with
Charlotte Hutchinson as the first foal of a Dalakhani half-sister to
G2 Grand Prix de Deauville winner Ziyad (GB) (Rock Of Gibraltar
{Ire}), cheaply culled by the Wertheimer brothers at the Arqana
Autumn Sale of 2017.
"Charlotte is my head girl and was leading him up," said an
emotional Sundstrom. "She bought the mare out of training, she
only cost i16,000. We love Starspangledbanner, we've had a lot
of luck with him, so he was an obvious choice for Dalakania.
"It's the most fantastic thing that he's going to Roger Varian.
And a fantastic result in a market like this. It just shows that
there are people there for good horses. It's difficult to know
when things are like this, we knew he had a lot of people
interested, but I didn't think he could make this much. It's
incredible.
"Goffs has been very good to us. The results on the track from
horses we sold here include Laurens (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) and
Nickajack Cave (Ire) (Kendargent {Fr}), so it's easy to come
back."
Laurens was the top filly of this sale in 2016, at ,220,000, and
went on to become one of its all-time poster girls with multiple
Group 1 success; while Nickajack Cave made ,65,000 the
following year and last month won his first group race at The
Curragh.
Equally delighted was Dermot Cantillon of Tinnakill House after
selling the Acclamation colt so wellCdue reward for his breeders
(Tinnakill Bloodstock and Ian Thompson) holding their nerve
when he was bought in for 40,000gns as a foal at Tattersalls last
December.
"That's our first horse through and a really good start at a
difficult time," said Cantillon. "He just did really well, foal to
yearling, and Acclamation has had a very good yearCincluding
with [G2 Prix Robert Papin winner] Ventura Tormenta (Ire), who
we sold here last year."
Ryan described this as "the best Acclamation I've seen in the
ring in recent times: a very tidy, well presented colt." Cont. p5

4,000gns Mare Proves a Hidden Bounty The first lot to break six figures represented a splendid
dividend for Ken Carroll and Tom Wallace, of Lewinstown Farm
and Lemongrove Stud, respectively. Their Kodi Bear (Ire) colt (lot
30), who made ,110,000 online from Phil Cunningham, was
acquired in utero with his dam, an unraced Bahamian Bounty
(GB) mare named Usem (GB), when she changed hands for just
4,000gns at Tattersalls December in 2018.
Two Sayif (Ire) fillies she had previously delivered both did
well, one winning four times and the other listed-placed in
France, and the quality of this colt had meanwhile persuaded
her new owners to upgrade her coverings.
"She has a Galileo Gold (GB) filly who's a queen, and she's in
foal to Invincible Spirit (Ire)Cso what would you say we think of
her?" said Carroll, who has "12 to 15" mares on his farm. "To be
fair, Invincible Spirit was a Kodi Bear once upon a time."
Carroll learned the ropes with Eddie O'Leary at Lynn Lodge, up
the road from his base in Co. Westmeath, while Wallace has
experience both in the United States and at another highly
astute outfit in Tally Ho.
"It's the centre of racing, is Westmeath," Carroll said with a
smile. "But he was one of the easy ones. He had six or seven
vettings. Good horses sell, don't they?"
Doyles Trust in Happy Fortunes with Redpender One team that wasn't missing the competition from Shadwell
was Peter and Ross Doyle, always purposeful participants at this
sale. They stuck to a tried-and-trusted formula when giving
,105,000 for lot 49, an Acclamation (GB) colt presented by
Redpender StudCboth in terms of his Co Kilkenny origins and his
breeding.
"We've had a wonderful relationship with Redpender over the
years," Ross Doyle observed. "Jimmy [Murphy] and his family do
a wonderful job and have sold us two champions in Canford
Cliffs (Ire) (Tagula {Ire}) and Toormore (Ire) (Arakan), as well as
Estidhkaar (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}). And last year they sold us
Happy Romance (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}) here."
That filly cost just ,25,000 at this sale and won her second
valuable prize in the associated Goffs UK Premier Yearling S. at
York, taking her earnings past ,175,000 already. She now seeks
some black-type in the G3 Dick Poole S. at Salisbury on Thursday.
Doyle's interest was further stimulated by his team's record
with the sire of this colt, who actually achieved only a marginal
gain having been pinhooked for i94,000 as a foal at Goffs
November. "We've been very lucky with him with our clients
and the Hannons, with Mehmas (Ire) and Harbour Watch (Ire),"
he said. Cont. p5

Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale Cont.
He added, "Oh This Is Us (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) is under the
second dam, so they're closely related, and this one reminded
us very much of him."
Oh This Is Us, who includes two listed prizes among his 13 wins
for the Hannon stable, is out of the Group 3 winner Shamwari
Lodge (Ire), herself out of a half-sister to that flying filly Pipalong
(Ire) (Pips Pride {GB}).
Doyle signed another six-figure docket minutes later when
giving ,100,000 for lot 56, a filly by another "Donny" standing
dish in Kodiac (GB). Bred and consigned by Loughtown Stud, she
was acquired in utero when her stakes-placed dam Zvarkhova
(Ire) (Makfi {GB}) made 125,000gns through Emerald Bloodstock
at Tattersalls December in 2018. Zvarkhova's granddam is an
unraced sister to champion Mark Of Esteem (Ire) (Darshaan {GB}).
Alice's Looking Class For someone who speaks so modestly of an operation
confined to "mornings, evenings and weekends", Alice Fitzgerald
is producing horses of which any 24/7 professional would be
proud. Previous sales through this ring include Hey Jonesy (Ire)
(Excelebration {Ire}), who won the Wokingham H. at Royal Ascot
this summer; star hurdler My Tent Or Yours (Ire) (Desert Prince
{Ire}); and Weatherbys Super Sprint winner Ginger Nut (Ire) (Sir
Prancealot {Ire}).
And Jake Warren was in no doubt that the Mehmas (Ire)
half-sister to Ginger Nut he bought for ,100,000 as lot 78 has
the potential to emulate their example. "We're thrilled with
her," the agent said. "She has a very nice pedigree and is a real
athlete, a wonderful mover, and looks a real summer 2-year-old.

SESSION TOPPERS
Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale Cont.
Fitzgerald, known to many in the Co Tipperary racing and
breeding fraternity through her day job in advertising, has three
yearlings in this sale; two in the Orby; and one in Book III at
Tattersalls. "We thought this was a very nice filly, but couldn't
have hoped that she would do quite so well," she said. "But the
sire is flying, of course, and she's a half-sister to a very fast filly."
Fitzgerald emphasized the role of partner Michael Doyle; and
also deserving a mention is Royal Applause, who is not only sire
of this filly's unraced dam but also grandsire of Mehmas.
Warren, meanwhile, was acting for the same client when
giving ,140,000 late in the session for a Dark Angel (Ire) colt (lot
219) bred and presented by Guy O'Callaghan of Grangemore
Stud in Co Kildare.
"Cracker of a horse," Warren said. "A terrific mover with a lot
of substance who should make a cracking 2-year-old. I would
think he'll stay in the U.K."
He is the first foal of Futoon (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), purchased by
O'Callaghan for 100,000gns at Tattersalls December in 2017
after she had achieved serial stakes placings for Kevin Ryan.
With 19 yearlings spread across a variety of sales, O'Callaghan
has his biggest draft of yearlings to dateCa tough year to be
growing your business, but we have already cited his admirable
breadth of perspective and he saluted this as "a champion of a
horse." Here, plainly, is another young talent worthy of a
remarkable dynasty of horsemen.
Sackville Shows Faith in Fast Families Tom Dascombe is to welcome a couple of brisk-looking colts
picked out by SackvilleDonald: one by Dark Angel (Ire) for
,105,000, offered as lot 162 by Yeomanstown Stud; and one by
Acclamation (GB) for ,120,000, presented by Eugene Daly of
Longview Stud as lot 186. Both are related to star sprinters. The
Acclamation colt's dam is a full-sister to Slade Power (Ire) (Dutch
Art {GB}); and the Dark Angel is out of a Verglas (Ire) half-sister
to champion Pipalong (Ire) (Pips Pride {GB}).
He is also a full brother to G2 Robert Papin runner-up Frozen
Angel (Ire). "He was a very good horse for us and was sold on to
Hong Kong for 335,000gns," Ed Sackville said. "We thought this
one was a very similar type. So it's not only a stallion we've been
lucky with, but also a family.
"Acclamation is another sire we've been very lucky with,
including with a nice 2-year-old called Lauded (GB), who runs in
the G3 Unibet Sirenia S. this weekend. This looked a similar
model: strong and precocious-looking. He's from a very good
farm that we know well, just down the road in Chasire, and we
hope to have a lot of luck with him."
As for trading conditions, Sackville gave a shrug. "It's a typical
Donny catalogue and there are nice horses here," he said. "We
just haven't been as strong as in recent yearsCfor the obvious
reasons."
Undaunted, most people will be back for another go when the
sale concludes on Wednesday. Selling opens at 10 a.m.

This colt was bred by Glebe Farm Stud and picked up by

Breeders= Cup Is More Than A Race Meeting Cont. from p1
The Flat has been relatively unaffected and it was a
particularly good effort by the authorities to ensure that all of
Ireland's Group 1 races will have been run this year, even if not
necessarily all in their usual slots. The jumping calendar has
obviously been more disrupted, and this week we received the
news, disappointing but understandable, that the Boylesports
Irish Grand National won't be run at all this year. Initially it had
been postponed from its usual Easter Monday slot to some
unspecified point in the autumn, but now it has been cancelled. I
can understand that. It's such a special occasion that it's much
more than a raceday. It's always been a real social occasion in
the Dublin area and, while no race-meeting is the same without
crowds, that is one in particular which revolves around the
general public. Everyone always has so much fun there. We've
been lucky enough to win it (courtesy of Our Duke in 2017) but
it's fun however your horse runs and whatever role you attend
in. We'll just have to look forward to going there again,
hopefully next year.
When racing did eventually start up again in June it was great
to be back, except of course I was told I couldn't go racing
because I was too old. That was a bit annoying at the time but I
kind of got used to it. Richie [Galway], my son-in-law, went to
England three times, so he effectively had six weeks of isolating
here, and then Kate went to York and to Deauville for me, so I'm
lucky to have lots of people and family around, and that does
make a difference.
At the beginning of July I was finally allowed to go racing again,
and that was a great novelty but I have to say that going racing
behind closed doors is not a great experience, especially when
the weather is bad. Over here, there's only a smattering of other
trainers present but at least now you can get a cup of coffee and
a sandwich. For the first few meetings there were absolutely no
facilities like that at all. So it's been different and it's been
challenging, but it has worked. My feeling is that we'll put up
with all these things as long as we can in order to keep racing
going. That's the most important thing for the whole industry--
for the breeding, for the stallions--and not just in Ireland.
When we were in lockdown we were videoing the horses on
the gallops, walking round, trotting round, and we kept trying to
think of new ways to film the horses for the owners to make
sure they weren't getting the same thing every week. Now
we've started racing, we do a video of the horse going round the
parade ring, then a clip of the jockey before the race saying
what he's going to do, and then we record some more
comments when he comes back in, and the owners get a video
of the race. So even though they can't be there to see their race,
we are trying to keep the horses' owners involved as much as
possible. Cont. p10

Alpine Star winning the Coronation S. | Scoop Dyga
Breeders= Cup Is More Than A Race Meeting Cont.
The last few years have been great fun, having fillies, and now
hopefully a few colts, who have competed at the top level on
the Flat. This year would of course have been much more fun if I
could have gone to Ascot or to Deauville or Chantilly, but we will
just have to look forward to it next year. The fillies especially
have been very good this year.
Alpine Star (Ire) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) is a really tough filly.
She won the G1 Coronation S. at Royal Ascot so well and has
tried so hard in her two races in France since then. She is very
different physically to her half-sister, [four-time Group 1 winner]
Alpha Centauri, who was a big strapping filly. This one is rather
small, but she just wants to please you. Then we've had
Cayenne Pepper (Ire) (Australia {GB}), who runs in the G2
Moyglare Blandford S. on Irish Champions Weekend, One Voice
(Ire) (Poet's Voice {GB}), Millisle (Ire) (Starspangledbanner
{Aus}) and Silence Please (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}). They've all
competed at the top level, and
hopefully our G1 Prix Marcel
Boussac winner Albigna (Ire)
(Zoffany Ire}) is on her way back
to doing that as well.
Last year Albigna became our
first runner at the Breeders' Cup
and I'm very much hoping to get
to Keeneland for the Breeders'
Cup this year. We'll have to see
how difficult, or not, that is.
Hopefully we can at least get the
horses there and the American
owners can see them run. It
doesn't matter if I can't go. The
Niarchos family have always
been tremendous supporters of the Breeders' Cup, and I know
Craig Bernick would love One Voice to be there, and we also
have Silence Please for Team Valor. We would very much like to
be there.
The same could be said about the Breeders' Cup as the Irish
Grand National, in that it's much more than just a race meeting.
Obviously as a race meeting it's top class, with some of the best
horses in the world. But it's also a great occasion, particularly as
in America the sport in general has a lower profile and it doesn't
break through to the wider consciousness that often. The
Breeders' Cup provides a great opportunity for racing in America
to do that, and so it too just won't be the same without crowds.
However, it does look like it's definitely going ahead, which will
be a great feat of organisation as, with the overall COVID-19
situation in the States and with the consequent restrictions on
travel etc., it's not going to be easy. We're lucky enough to have
some horses good enough to attend, so God willing we'll be
there.
There are of course plenty of options for those horses here in
Europe but we want to keep our options open and hope we can
get to America. It's going to be challenging to get the staff out
there and we need to find out what isolating they will have to do
once they get out there or when they come home. The staff
have been fantastic and anyone who looks after a horse who is
good enough to race internationally is very keen to go with
them. We'll do our best to go because it's good for racing and
good for owners, and it's good for the sport internationally.
It's the time of year when the National Hunt horses are
starting to increase their work again. We don't have as many
jumpers in as usual but Sizing John (GB) (Midnight Legend {GB})
is working away and we are hoping to run him at Listowel--that's
our plan. We are keeping everything crossed and we hardly dare
speak about it, but we'd love to get him back.
The Flat and the National Hunt
horses all do the same thing
really. I train them all muddled
up together. The jumpers are
great when the yearlings come
in and start to be ridden. There's
always a few who go out with
the jumpers, and the older
horses behave so the yearlings
realise there's no point in
jumping around because the
other horses don't jump around,
and they learn like that.
We have a couple of very nice
horses to look forward to, like
Sizing Pottsie (Fr) (Kapgarde
{Fr}), who was a good novice chaser from last year and he seems
to have come back very strong. And of course we have the
evergreen Magic Of Light (Ire) (Flemensfirth), who was
runner-up to Tiger Roll (Ire) (Authorized {Ire}) in the Grand
National in 2019 and will go for the National again this season.
She'll probably go down her usual route of mares' hurdles and
mares' chases first. It's nice for her to do that and to get her
confidence up before Aintree.

OXTED OUT OF G1 BETFAIR SPRINT CUP S. Oxted (GB) (Mayson {GB}), winner of the G1 Darley July Cup S.
last out on July 11, will not line up in the G1 Betfair Sprint Cup S.
at Haydock on Sept. 5, trainer Roger Teal announced on Twitter
Tuesday. The 3-year-old, who was one of the top contenders for
the race did not please Teal in a work on Tuesday morning.
Oxted also won the G3 Abernant S. in June.
AAs to not mislead the punters out there, Oxted is a non-
runner on Saturday,@ Teal tweeted. AHe wasn=t his usual self this
morning and we have made the decision to pull him out. We are
desperately disappointed for the whole team and connections.
It=s better to let people know straight away.@
Teal is awaiting the results of some tests after the sub-par
work.
Added Teal, AWe=ve had a trach wash done, and we=re still
waiting on the results of that. Everything was fine yesterday,
and the horse worked really well on Saturday, but didn=t this
morning.
AWe always let him tell us in his final bit of work before a race
whether he=s ready for it, and I just wasn=t happy, and you can=t
go into a Group 1 if you=re not 100% confident the horse is at
the top of his game.
AIt=s devastating for all of us, because we=ve been looking
forward to going to Haydock for a long time--but with the
ground on the softer side as well, we have to be 110% sure,
because if he did run and disappointed I=d kick myself to the
church and back.@
PALACE PIER AIMING FOR QEII
G1 St James=s Palace S. and G1 Prix Jacques le Marois victor
Palace Pier (GB) (Kingman {GB}) will bid to keep his unbeaten
record intact in the G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. on Champions Day
at Ascot on Oct. 17.
Trainer John Gosden, who will be bidding for a fifth win in the
race, said, APalace Pier will go straight to Ascot for the Queen
Elizabeth II S. He took his race at Deauville [the Marois] well, and
he=s been in good order since. I don=t think the ground there was
ideal for him, but he coped with it.@
Palace Pier is among 39 entries for the QEII, and those also
include G1 2000 Guineas winner Kameko (Kitten=s Joy), G1 Irish
2000 Guineas winner Siskin (First Defence), champion 2-year-
old and G1 Prix Jean Prat scorer Pinatubo (Ire) (Shamardal) and
dual Royal Ascot winner Circus Maximus (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).
Trainer Ger Lyons said of Siskin, AHe=s been in good order since
he was third to the best older miler Mohaather in the [G1]
Sussex S. at Goodwood, and he has options in the [G1] Prix de la
Foret in France, the [G2] Boomerang on Irish Champions Day
and of course the QEII.@
Trainer Charlie Appleby said he still has some sorting out to do
among his sprinter/milers Pinatubo and Space Blues (Ire)
(Dubawi {Ire}), the latter of which is targetting the G1 QIPCO
British Champions Sprint on Champions Day and could possibly
take in the Foret.
APinatubo will step back up to a mile again in the [Prix du]
Moulin [on Sept. 6], and if he doesn=t happen to win and we feel
he=s definitely not seeing that mile out, then he will be dropping
back to seven furlongs in the Foret,@ Appleby said. AThen we
would have to decide if we wanted to run both him and Space
Blues in the same race.@

PESLIER TAKES ROMANISED RIDE
Olivier Peslier has picked up the mount on Romanised (Ire)
(Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) in Sunday=s G1 Prix du Moulin at
ParisLongchamp, with regular rider Billy Lee set to stay in Ireland
to avoid a two-week quarantine that would see him sit out Irish
Champions Weekend.
Dual Group 1 winner Romanised was second in this race last
season. He won the G2 Minstrel S. on his 5-year-old debut in
July before settling for fifth over heavy ground in the G1 Prix
Jacques le Marois on Aug. 16.
ARomanised is heading for the Prix du Moulin this weekend,@
said trainer Ken Condon. AHe did his last bit of work this morning
and that went very smoothly. His blood tests are excellent and
his scope was good, so he=s good to go.
AOlivier Peslier is going to take the ride. It=s going to be a small
field, I=d say, and Olivier Peslier is world-class--we=ve all watched
him for years. This horse needs to be ridden in a certain way. His
strongest attribute is his turn of foot and we=ve got a very good
man on our side.
AHe=ll fly out Saturday. The ground is the most important factor
and it looks like we should get good ground or on the quick side.
He=s in good shape and we=re looking forward to it.@
SUN CHARIOT FOR POWERFUL BREEZE Group 2 winner Powerful Breeze (GB) (Iffraaj {GB}), second in
the G1 bet365 Fillies= Mile S. to sign off her juvenile year last
October, is a potential starter in the G1 Kingdom of Bahrain Sun
Chariot S. at Newmarket on Oct. 3. The Hugo Palmer trainee,
who races in the colours of Dr. Ali Ridha, sustained several
broken ribs earlier this year that has kept her out of action. A
debut winner at Newmarket prior to her G2 May Hill S. victory,
Powerful Breeze appears to have healed nicely and is in good
order for her first start back.
APowerful Breeze is doing great,@ said Palmer. AShe=s been
back cantering for a while now. She hasn=t galloped yet, but she
didn=t take a lot of galloping to get to her peak last year. We
think she=s a bigger and stronger filly this year and the most
important thing is there is no indication she is any discomfort
whatsoever--long may that remain the case.
AI=m hopeful we=ll see her in the Sun Chariot. There is no
obvious opportunity to run her before Newmarket, but she did
win first and second time up last season and is not a big filly who
takes a lot of getting fit. It=s obviously been a concertinaed
campaign, so if there is ever a good year to miss most of the
season, this was it.@
RYAN MOORE CALLED UP FOR IRISH
CHAMPIONS WEEKEND Ryan Moore, who rides first call for Ballydoyle trainer Aidan
O=Brien, has entered quarantine in Ireland as of last Saturday
and will be riding in Ireland at Irish Champions Weekend on
Sept. 12-13. These will be Moore=s first rides in Ireland in 2020,
as COVID-19 has kept him in the UK earlier in the season.
AAs people travelling from the UK to Ireland currently have to
quarantine on arrival for 14 days, I flew over immediately after
racing at Goodwood last Saturday afternoon so that I could ride
at the Irish Champions Weekend, starting on Sept. 12 at
Leopardstown and moving on to The Curragh the following day,@
Moore told Betfair. AIt means that I am stuck in a house on my
own for a fortnight, but it is well worth that small hardship. It
has obviously been a touch frustrating on a personal level,
watching so many of our stars winning in Ireland this season,
while I have had to stay at home. Cont. p13

AThere is no substitute for getting a first-hand feel for all of the
horses, as I always say. There is only so much a form book, or a
video, can tell you. Not that I can even ride out while I am over
here, but hopefully Aidan has lined up a strong team for the
meeting.
AIrish Champions Weekend is so important that it made total
sense for me to come over. It is a major meeting that you always

O'BRIEN CONFIRMS MATINGPLANS FOR SEGENHOE
By Paul Vettise
The Maloney family=s Segenhoe Stud continues to make its
mark to the highest level across Australia with a remarkable
strike rate from an elite and ever-evolving band of broodmares
residing at the Hunter Valley farm. TDN AusNZ caught up with
Peter O'Brien to discuss mating plans for the season.
Last season, an extraordinary trend continued for Segenhoe
with dual Group 1 winner King=s Legacy (Redoute=s Choice)
leading the charge of the graduates and ably backed up by
stakes performers Barbaric (I Am Invincible), Dubai Star (Pride
Of Dubai), Holyfield (I Am Invincible), Ticket To Ride (Vancouver)
and Vangelic (Vancouver). Blaze A Trail (Criterion {NZ}) was also
runner-up in the Golden Gift and this season Holyfield is again
on the board following his impressive victory in the G3 Ming
Dynasty at Rosehill.
AHolyfield was a beautiful yearling and physically he always
looked like a 3-year-old. Ciaron Maher was here last week and
said he=ll just get better and better,@ Segenhoe General Manager
Peter O=Brien said. AIt=s amazing when you look at that crop that
we had at the Magic Millions that year. We had Vangelic, King=s
Legacy, Holyfield and Barbaric and they were our four most
expensive yearlings at the sale.
AThere are four other good horses like Poland, Shaik, San
Antoni and Willinga Panache from that draft and I=d be very
surprised if they don=t become stakes performers so we could
have half of our Magic Millions draft from that year as stakes
performers.
AFrom a Segenhoe perspective, 26% of the mares that the
Maloney family own have produced stakes performers in the
last five years, which is extraordinary.@
Segenhoe, will breed from 48 mares this season, and mating
plans for 2020 have been planned and confirmed by O=Brien and
Assistant Manager Brian Clarke.
AI=ve said it before and I honestly think this is the best farm in
the country and when we do our matings, from conception to
maturity all we are thinking about is producing a racehorse, not
a sales horse,@ O=Brien said. AObviously, sales are where we get
our income from, but producing a racehorse is absolutely what
we want to do.
AWe go through all the mares and then first of all look at all the
stallions we want to use. From there we do in-depth pedigree
analysis as well as obviously physical compatibility.
AWith the young mares, in the first three years we try to make
sure they go to two proven stallions. We are also very conscious
of sending young mares to speed stallions, particularly in the
first two years to get them up and running.
AInvariably, we try and go to proven stallions as much as
possible like So You Think, Pierro, Pride Of Dubai, Zoustar,
Snitzel and I Am Invincible.

AConsidering the market we are in, I think the services fees are
way too high so this season in particular we have had to look at
first-season stallions that we like.@
Segenhoe will be supporting half a dozen stallion newcomers.
AI absolutely love Too Darn Hot and we are sending six
Segenhoe mares to him. The other one that absolutely blew me
away was Pierata and we are sending four very good mares to
him,@ O=Brien said. AAnother stallion that I=ve followed and saw
on a racetrack in Brisbane is Zousain, and he is an Adonis so
we=re breeding four to him. Of the others, we=re sending three
to Microphone, one to Exceedance and one to Brutal.@
O'Brien also made special mention of the first foals by young
Arrowfield stallion The Autumn Sun making a particularly strong
impression. King=s Legacy=s dam Breakfast In Bed (Hussonet
{USA}) is in foal to Pierro and a decision on a return to the
stallion will be made after the youngster arrives.
Holyfield=s mother Hurtle Myrtle (Dane Shadow) will foal to
Deep Field and is booked to I Am Invincible while Total
Attraction (Nadeem), who has produced G2 Moreton Cup
winner Pretty In Pink (Sebring), will visit Zoustar.
Group 1 Producer Girl Hussler (Hussonet {USA}) has been a grand producer with
her brood including the G1 Orr S. winner Manuel (Commands)
and the G3 Ken Russell Memorial Classic winner Taking Aim
(Choisir). She is foaling to Zoustar and will be served by Snitzel.
Custard (Lonhro) will be mated with Zoustar following the
arrival of her Trapeze Artist foal and is the dam of the G3
Thoroughbred Club S. winner Serene Majesty (Fastnet Rock) and
the Listed winner Curdled (All Too Hard).
AWe=ve retired Granny Red Shoes, Winter Bride, Pretty In Pink
and Miss Admiration, four stakes winners,@ O=Brien said. Granny
Red Shoes (Not A Single Doubt) will visit Pierro or Deep Field,
Winter Bride (Not A Single Doubt) is booked to Pierro, Pretty In
Pink will be off to Zoustar and Miss Admiration (Sebring) will be
served by Too Darn Hot (GB).
AI was very fortunate when I started here to have such a
beautiful canvas and the quality of stock. Like any farm we have
a consistent team here and the Maloney family support me like
no other,@ O=Brien said. APart of that, is making sure all the team
are happy and more importantly well paid and that brings
longevity. All of that is a massive part in the success of the
farm.@
Quality Clientele Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum, Fairway
Thoroughbreds, Go Bloodstock, Phoenix Thoroughbreds,
Trelawney Stud, Chris and Jane Barham and Aquis all also have
mares at Segenhoe.
AWith Sheikh Khalifa, Tim Stakemire and Mohammed Khaleel
they come up with suggestions send them through and really do
all of it. I have a look and make suggestions,@ O=Brien said. AWith
Fairway, John [Camilleri] does the majority and I=m just there to
advise if needed and the same with Go Bloodstock. Trelawney
do their own as do Phoenix, but again they send a list and I
might make a suggestion.
AWith the Barhams, we work together with the matings and
most of our breeders are some of the best in the country. We=re
privileged to have them on the farm and they=ve been around
long enough to know more than I do. Aquis moved a lot of the
mares to Gooree and called us to take some so we=re delighted
and have a very good relationship with them.@
