Registration for the spring

semester set to begin at

Ozarka College

Registration will open for current OzarkaCollege students on Monday, Nov. 4 at 8 a.m.for the spring 2014 semester. Any student whohas successfully completed a semester atOzarka College can register online aftermeeting and planning class schedules withacademic advisors. The first day of the springsemester will be Monday, Jan. 13.

Any new or first-­time students mayregister beginning on Monday, Nov. 11 andcontinuing through Friday, Dec. 13.Late registration is also scheduled for Jan. 7 -­10.

donation First National Banking Company has committed$50,000 to the Ozarka College StudentServices Center Capital Campaign. The contribution will pay to furnish the StudentCommons Area, an open area to be used forstudent and community events, studying,dining and student activities. "We very much believe in Ozarka College andthe opportunity it provides our local communityto receive an education they might nototherwise have access to at an affordablecost," said Martin Carpenter, FNBC CEO andchairman of the board. "We have supported theCollege for a long time and we plan to continuethat support into the future." Read more here

make a little money in theprocess. She began her ownbusiness through a Facebookpage, Mini Top Hat Emporium. "I've sold quite a few hats overthe last two years," she said. She also attends fairs andcraft shows in the area, whereshe competes and sells hergoods. In fact, she placed firstat the Van Buren County Fairthis year and was able tocompete at the ArkansasState Fair. Growing up with an artisticmother, Bensuk was drawn tothe art classes offered atOzarka College -­ MountainView. This semester will beher last at Ozarka College, butshe has completed at leastone art course per semestersince she arrived. With instructors like CheriMcKee-­McSwain and DustyMitchell, she said each classhas taught her something new. "The teachers are just reallygreat instructors," Bensuksaid. "They really like to getinvolved with the students andhelp us through the projects." She said she has knownstudents who thought they hadno art skills who have comeout of their classes and beenproud of what they've done.She enjoys how the artclasses allow her and otherstudents to take a break from

I am also very pleased to reportthat as of Jan. 2, 2014 ourleadership structure will bemodified to further strengthenstudent learning by closelylinking student services,institutional research andplanning, and academics. Thiswill be reflected most directly byestablishing the new position ofProvost and Executive VicePresident of Learning. Dr.Dennis Rittle will assume thisimportant leadership position forthe college and Vice Presidentsof Student Services, andInstitutional Research andPlanning will report to theProvost. Annual Golf Scramble has anothersuccess year

The Ozarka College Foundation Board hostedits annual golf scramble on Saturday, Oct. 5 atCooper's Hawk Golf Course in Melbourne. Thisevent is held each fall and raises money tobenefit Ozarka College students.

This year's tournament had 25 teamsparticipate.

"Once again, our community has shown justhow much it cares about the success ofOzarka College and its students," said SuellenDavidson, director of advancement. "Weappreciate each and every sponsor and all ofthe golfers who braved the rain to help make animpact in students' lives." Read more here

I've donethings I never thought ofdoing." She's completed classes likestudio art, art history, visualart and is currently insculpting. Earlier in the semesterstudents completed a wiresculpture that took about threeweeks to complete. Bensukcreated a tea set, inspired byher Alice in Wonderland style. A true artist, Bensuk dressesup each day for school incostumes typically handmadeby her mother, Katherine. "It's fun being different," shesaid. "Students just look atme like they're confused whenI dress normal." She describes her style assteampunk Alice inWonderland. Steampunk is asubgenre of science fictionthat typically features steam-­powered machinery, especiallyin a setting inspired byindustrialized Westerncivilization during the 19thcentury. Next up in sculpting, studentswill be using plaster, which is

Whitten named to Vision 2025 Kim Whitten of Ash Flat has been appointed tothe Vision 2015 Legislative Commission on theFuture of Higher Education as a designee forRep. James McLean. Whitten is currently the director of operations atOzarka College -­ Ash Flat. She has also servedas public relations and marketing specialist atOzarka College and executive assistant to thechancellor and media relations at the Universityof Arkansas Community College atBatesville. Shedescribed it as "kind ofcartoonish," using primarycolors of red, yellow and blueand incorporating in with herdrawings. "The colors we use makes itso it kind of pops to the eye,"she said. Bensuk landed at OzarkaCollege after a cousin andother family membersencouraged her to attendbecause of its close proximityto home, and it's a decisionshe hasn't regretted. "Once I got here, it was reallya friendly place," she said."It's very community oriented." She plans to transfer to theUniversity of Central Arkansasafter she completes herAssociate of Arts degree thissemester at Ozarka College.She hopes to one day becomea librarian. Foundation to present MichaelJohnson in concert

The Ozarka College Foundation will hostsinger/songwriter Michael Johnson in concerton Saturday, Nov. 2, at 7 p.m. at the OzarkFolk Center in Mountain View. A celebrated guitarist, Johnson is well knownfor his songs "Bluer than Blue," "This NightWon't Last Forever" and "That's That."

His 1986 hit "Give Me Wings" reached numberone on the charts and was the BillboardCountry Song of the Year. Read more here

PTK inducted new members on Tuesday, Oct.29

Ozarka College's Beta Alpha Eta chapter of PhiTheta Kappa (PTK), a national honor society forstudents in two-­year colleges, inducted newmembers during a ceremony Tuesday, Oct. 29,in the lobby of the John E. Miller EducationComplex in Melbourne.

PTK President Tina Boris of Salem welcomedstudents and their guests to the ceremony andpresented information on the history of PhiTheta Kappa, which was founded in 1918 byMissouri two-­year college presidents andserves to recognize and encourage theacademic achievement of two-­year collegestudents. Faculty advisor Katie Wilson introduced guestspeaker Dr. Dennis Rittle, vice president ofacademic affairs at Ozarka College, who spokeon leadership and responsibility. Other programparticipants included Tracie Morris, facultyadvisor, and Shawnette Kimble, PTKsecretary/treasurer. Following the induction, Vice President forStudent Services Ron Helm offered theinvocation and PTK members and guestsenjoyed a reception served by Wilson and PTKalumni Karen Overturf and WandaMcConnaughhay in honor of the new members. department will offer introduction to HVAC atthe Mammoth Spring campus starting inNovember.

The course will be offered on Monday, Tuesdayand Thursday each week from 4:30 -­ 7:30 p.m.beginning the week of Nov. 18 and goingthrough the week of Dec. 19.

Ash Flat to offer burlap wreathcourse The continuing education department at OzarkaCollege will present a burlap wreath class onThursday, Nov. 14 from 6 -­ 8 p.m. at the AshFlat campus, located at 64 College Dr. Thecost is $25.50 and those over age 60 will beoffered a discounted rate of $20.50. Lori Carpenter of The Grapevine Home willinstruct the course. This fun workshop will provide materials andinstruction to create your own burlap wreath totransition through the holidays. Participants willlearn the basics of making a wreath and tyinglarge, decorative bows. All students must bringscissors and other decorations or materialsthey wish to add to the wreath to make it theirown one-­of-­a-­kind creation. At the end of the workshop, participants willtake home a completed wreath and knowledgeto create additional burlap wreaths. Seating is very limited.
