Cities is a one-year taught MA offered by UCD School of Art History & Cultural Policy. It comprises a series of taught modules which explore the crucial importance of art in expressing civic power and identity from antiquity to the present day. Among the issues explored are the politics of urban display, the development of metropolitan styles within the history of art, the impact of public sculpture, pageantry and corporate / state-sponsored portraiture.

Programme information: The course begins in September 2015. Teaching takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays and provides a stimulating mixture of lectures, seminars and site visits. Individual modules will be assessed through presentations, essays and slide tests. A foreign, mandatory field trip is planned during the spring term, and formal teaching ends in April to allow students time to work on their theses.

Each year three specialist modules are selected from the following list: Fraternal Cities at War: Amsterdam and Antwerp (Dr John Loughman); Istanbul Through the Ages (Dr Lynda Mulvin); Modern Manhattan (Prof Kathleen James-Chakraborty); Rome, Caput Mundi (Dr Lynda Mulvin); The Myth of Venice (Dr Philip Cottrell).

The combination (provisional) for 2015-16 is Fraternal Cities at War: Amsterdam and Antwerp, The Myth of Venice and Modern Manhattan.

The course also includes the module Approaches to Art History (Dr Roisin Kennedy) which seeks to introduce sources and methods of postgraduate research. These are of particular relevance to the thesis component which allows each student to develop their own topic in agreement with an academic supervisor.
