ART & POETRY CONTEST

ADL (The Anti-Defamation League) and No Place for Hate® initiative in the South Central Region announce our sixth annual student art and poetry contest. Students who attend school in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Arkansas are invited to join us as we Fight Hate For Good.

• Students who submit winning submissions will be awarded a one year student membership to The National WWII Museum.

FIGHTING HATE FOR GOOD ART AND POETRY PERMISSION & RELEASE

CONTEST THEMEFighting Hate For Good®

Students may submit a work of art or a poem that best addresses the following prompt: In the words of the immortal John Lewis, "Get in good trouble, necessary trouble." What good and necessary trouble would you get into to fight systemic racism, hate and prejudices of all kinds? Write a poem or create a depiction:

1. Explaining what good and necessary trouble you would choose.

2. Portraying how this "necessary trouble" will be used to help your community.

CONTEST GUIDELINES• Entries must be original works created by students who

attend school in LA, MS, or AR during the 2020-2021 school year.

• Students may enter one submission in each category (art and poetry).

• All entries must have a completed entry form paper clipped to the front of the submission. To be complete, the entry form must include a signature from the parent/guardian.

• All entries must be received by March 31, 2021 at 5pm.

• Schools hosting local art and poetry contests should send all winning entries together. Students from schools not holding local contests may submit their entries individually.

POETRY CATEGORY GUIDELINES• Entrants must submit an original and unpublished poem.

The poem must be solely the work of the entrant.

• The poem must be typed in 12-point font, and printed on 8.5" x 11" unlined paper.

• The poem must be written in English.• The poem must not exceed 100 words and 1

printed page.

• The entrant’s name, school, and city should not appear anywhere on the poem page.

• All entries that exceed these limits will be disqualified.

ART CATEGORY GUIDELINES• Entrants must submit an original, unpublished work of

2D media. Videos cannot be accepted, nor can 3D art. No glitter, please. Art should be 11" x 14".

• Art submissions may be in one or more of the following media: painting (watercolor, acrylic, ink, oil, or other), drawing, collage, print (including silk-screens and lithographs), and photography (black and white or color).

• It is recommended that art submissions be mounted before mailing, but it is not required. Art should be mailed or hand delivered flat (no binders or tubes).

• The entrant’s name, school, and city should not appear anywhere on the artwork.

• Entrants must submit, along with their artwork, a one-paragraph typed explanation of what their artwork represents. The entrant’s name, school, and city should not appear anywhere in the paragraph.

JUDGING GUIDELINES• Each entry will be evaluated by a panel of judges.

Entry forms will be removed during the judging process to ensure that judging is based solely on the merits of the artwork or poem.

• Students will be entered into one of these four award groups: K-2nd; 3rd-5th; 6th-8th; or 9th-12th.

• First, second, and third place awards will be given to entries in each category.

• Poems will be judged on content, creativity, originality, organization, and correct grammar and spelling appropriate to the entrant’s grade level.

• Artwork will be judged on originality, creativity, design, and interpretation of the theme appropriate to the entrant’s grade level.

• The decision of the judges is final.

• Once the judging has been completed, entry forms will be reattached to winning artwork and poems. Winners will be notified directly as will their school.
