ART APPRECIATION

John Baldessari

Baldessari focuses on drawing the viewer’s attention to minor details, absences, or the spaces between things. He wants to draw the viewers attention to minute deatail’s so that they can see the distortion of a particular object and recognize the tiny spaces in between things.

John Baldessari Response

Here is my toasted Ham & Cheese that I had for lunch this afternoon. I thought that this would be a good representation of Baldessari’s work because in the small minute details you could tell that the cheese is melted in between the two slices of ham and that the bread is toasted. The details in an artists work reveal so much about a picture and I thought this correlated with Baldessari’s work pretty well.

Leonardo DrewLeonardo Drew was born in Tallahassee. His sculptures are made of naturally weathered materials such as wood, rusted iron, cotton, paper, mud. He intentionally subjects to processes of, burning, oxidization, and decay. Drew’s work is partially intended to create a “what if” feeling.

Leonardo Drew Response

This is a horse trailer full of wood that me and my family have been cutting ourselves since July. I felt that this can relate to Leonardo Drew because he used natural materials and would purposely weather, burn, or decay them for an effect. This wood has been getting weathered and seasoned so that it burn really well in a fire place. This wood is purposely being weathered just like how Drew would weather his materials. Also the light coming in from the side of the trailer gives off a natural feel to the photo.

Barry McGee

Barry McGee comes from a culture that comprises skaters, graffiti artists, and West Coast surfers. I find Mcgee’s connections to the west coast skater/surfer culture very awesome because I love those things myself. He views graffiti as a way to stay connected to a wider and more diverse viewer base. This photo is one of his images from the Artists at work gallery.

Barry McGee Response

Shooting footage with my GoPro has been as hobby of mine for quite a while now. McGee’s connections to the Californian surf and skater scene made me think that taking a picture of my camera would be perfect because many skaters and surfers use GoPro’s to capture what they’re doing, their own form of art. There are also several graffiti artists’ that have Instagram accounts devoted to the same idea as Mcgee. To reach out to a broader viewer base
