2 STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES (SLOs)

Upon successful completion of ART101, the student will be able to:

1. Demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the elements of art, principles of design, and the creative process. 2. Demonstrate a familiarity with major historical and contemporary movements in art and be able to understand how art reflects its time. 3. Demonstrate an understanding of the various art media. 4. Appreciate the visual arts’ influences on the quality of life 5. Incorporate writing as a tool for analyzing art forms.

COURSE CONTENT

*At least 2/3 of the course meetings and topics are aligned with the hallmarks for the general education diversification in the arts (DA) designation.

1. Basic responsive drawing (pencil) 2. Basic responsive painting (Acrylics) 3. Basic collage construction 4. Basic formal and contextual analyses 5. Basic portfolio presentation 6. Basic use of art terminology 7. Basic knowledge of historical movements

COURSE TASKS

At the end of the semester every student must have a complete set of required assignments. All the electronic files as instructed should be uploaded in students’ Laulima DROP BOX before their deadlines. Projects include basic drawings, paintings, collages, and sculptures to name a few. You are not expected to have any previous knowledge or related art skill. The customary and basic knowledge of digitizing their artwork and sending them to their instructor is expected of all students. Other timely projects may also be assigned. Your self-motivated and timely preparation in this online learning environment is imperative to your success. THE EDUCATIONAL USE OF STUDENTS’ ARTWORK AND ESSAYS Digital copies of students’ work are often used in this class as visual and educational teaching tools. Your consent to the above is reasonably implied if you continue with this class after the drop period ends. ASSESSMENT TASKS AND GRADING

Students will be expected to complete the following items of work in order to earn points toward their final grades:

Recommended text: Henry Sayre, A World of Art (7th edition). Access to the electronic copy of the text, a loose-leaf copy, Or renting the text may be possible at the following two outlets: HCC Bookstore or Vital Source or the publisher Pearson and other on-line booksellers, such as, the Amazon.

*UH-Laulima website is an indispensible component of the course. It may not, however, fully substitute for the course text or a student’s class attendance!

EXAMINATION POLICY

Students are required to complete their prescribed modules in a timely manner before they could take their Midterm/s and Final exams. Examinations are in take-home, essay form and provided mainly online unless you request a timed and proctored multiple-choice exam. All students are required to AGREE to a non-disclosure, academically bounding PROMISSORY NOTE. You will not be able to take your exams if you do not agree to this PROMISSORY NOTE or miss a previous examination.

*Important Note: If you miss any of the Midterm Exams, you will be assigned a minus (– 80) points. If you miss more than one of the course three midterm exams, you will be assigned an “F” grade. You may officially request for an “N” grade due to life/work/family circumstances beyond your control. “N” grades are not automatically assigned. Only the instructor could decide on such assignment.

Important Exception: In extremely rare cases (active military personal who are on emergency basis sent out and away from Oahu, for example), online written essays and multiple-choice in addition to live oral examinations may be offered at the instructor’s discretion. These exceptions may be extended to all students at the instructor’s discretion.

ART SUPPLY

You may find all or most of your art supplies at your college Bookstores, Ben Franklin, Hopaco, Fisher Hawai‘i, etc. Some additional material may be required for individual projects.

1. An 11 X 14 inches or larger drawing/painting (smooth) sketchbook 2. Number HB - 4B graphite drawing pencils (minimum: a 4B) 3. A good and clean eraser 4. A set of 24 Colors (PRO ART) creamy oil pastels (sticks, but NOT tubes) 5. An 18 x 24 inch, primed stretched canvas board 6. A set of Art Advantage (18) acrylic paint (tubes) 7. A few painting brushes (round, straight, angular - No. 2 to 6) 8. A pack of Activa Rigid Wrap (plaster cloth) and/or some modeling clay 9. A pair of needle-nose utility pliers (to work with a variety of wires) 10. A clear glue stick or your preferred glue 11. A 15X20 inch white or black illustration board (not paper!) 12. Some recycled colorful (picturesque) magazines 13. A basic digital camera and/or a flatbed scanner is required (to digitize art work).

***IMPORTANT: Do not use Oil or Chalk paint when painting your project number 1. You may be asked to snail mail or hand-deliver your artwork to the instructor’s office, if your instructor for any reason doubts your proper use of the required material.
